Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

0.5m left, how do I improve defence without losing my front 8? Coloccini to Dummett makes it 1.0m

    Begovic
    Simpson - Ward - NTaylor
    Eriksen - Mata - Siggy - Sanchez
    Dzeko - Costa - Rooney

Gilks -- Wanyama - Coloccini - van Aanholt

    .....................De Gea

    Fábregas Mata Sterling Sigurdsson
    ...........Rooney Lukaku Bony

DDG to Bego would save you 0.5m and you could bring in Evans for Huth

Because sometimes when I look at other people's teams I see things I like, and it gives me ideas on how to improve my team.

Someone may look at my team and think 'why does he have that guy' and then they have a little look into him and want him in their team.

Probably the best criticism so far.

I'd also want to start with Dzeko/Jovetic and then move to Lukaku if he's in form early. If not then move to the most in form sub 9.0 mill striker.

I think the main problem is knowing which new players will take to the prem straight away and which of the previous high scorers will continue to do well.
For me the mid-fielders look to be a nightmare to chose, with so many potentially great ones.

Agree, as there are so many good midfield options this year teams in my league will hopefully look more varied than last. My team, above, has Sanchez, Mata, Siggy and Silva plus a 5.0. Looks ok but then worried about CH mid and Ramsey. Good have these worries, makes it a more fun and variable game. Oh and no Toure is v v worrying

I have Yaya at the mo, but he don'y half take a chunk of dough. I'm thinking of going with a 3-5-2
          Third striker being very cheap.
Of course that will no doubt change by lunchtime.

I think this is a good point, and I am changing my strategy and taking fixtures strongly into consideration.

In past years I have generally played my wildcard early with much knee-jerkery and impatience. I would love to say that this is going to change, but I have little patience for non-performers and an appetite for bandwagons.

Hi Sarj, good to hear you are looking to make a change for the better...

The best advice I can offer you is to focus on your will power and just do it, if you really want to make the change it should just happen naturally...

I used to drink a lot of sugary drinks like coke and eat sugary sweets in between meals, but I always wanted to stop cos I knew it wasn't healthy, but I never did anything about it, until after my birthday, then for some reason I really felt it was time to stop, and I just did...

I stopped 'cold turkey', but that might not work for some... I did have a sore head (caffeine withdrawals) for about 3-4 days, but after that it was fine...

I found that having a set routine in the morning/afternoon allowed me focus on that and avoid thinking about the urges to drink or eat sugar... and as silly as it might sound, that would usually include tidying/cleaning/cooking/planning my day...

There is nothing quite like an omelette in the morning to get rid of my sugar urges... you can put in anything you have in the fridge, but I usually just have about 4-6 eggs (with shallottes and cheese mixed in to the beaten eggs), tomatoes, onions, peppers, and whichever meat you have in the fridge... obviously you'd cook the meat first, then the vege's, then add the egg mix at the end...

I made that change to my diet about 4 months ago when I turned 30, and I've never felt better... best decision I've ever made...

I now allow myself a couple of pieces of dark chocolate every week, which I'm happy enough with...

      Good luck...

A few other ideas for small meals to have if, like me, it is a sweet tooth you are fighting...

        - porridge with a drop of honey instead of processed sugar...
        - fruit salad (any mixture really, but I enjoy oranges, bananas, kiwifruit, melon(all types), pineapple, strawberries)

How many viable mids are there in comparison to viable forwards?

I keep thinking 3-5-2 truly is the way to go to start, but it also asks for disaster if it goes tits up.

Same. There's 3 mids to everyone 1 good striker. 3-5-2 looks to be the way to go, but 3-4-3 is definitely more sensible.

That's my thinking on both fronts too.

Rooney,Costa, Bony, Jovetic, and Lukaku are the only 5 forwards I'm targeting to start the year.

RVP, Sturridge, and undoubtedly others will come about, but 5 to start the year is a very low number.

Hiya lads, been good reading a lot of posts on here tonight. As for my team i think i'm all done, received good comments over the past few days but have tweaked it slightly in defence, let me know you're final thoughts?

Going with a 3-5-2, and have come to the conclusion of ditching the 5.5 benched striker for a 4.5 to bolster defence.

    Begovic

    Evans - Vertonghen - F.Luis

    Arnie - Ramsey - Fabragas - Mata - Siggy

    Rooney - Costa

The team looks strong. If you are going 3-5-2 would it not be better to have 4 heavy hitters in the midfield as opposed to 3 with 2 lower mid priced players (arnie & Sig).

Yo man, yeah i'm liking it, and yeah i suppose it would be better and it has crossed my mind, i've squeezed Eriksen in there at some point but no idea who to choose really for another big 4th mid, arnie is the punt that could pay off big, whereas sig is just a bargain, by downgrading Vert i'd manage at most to get 8.0m for that other big mid, and only Eriksen springs to mind there, who would you choose?

Yeah thats true, or i could just downgrade Vert to a 4.5 and habe Eriksen, i really want a chelsea defender though, so i seem stubborn on keeping Luis haha, Sterling for me is a wait and see, even thoughhe has looked promising from pre season, i suppose i can't have them all though, and i guess the fuss of finding a big 4th mid is tolerable considering i'm happy with the overall team and balance, i'll see how it plays out and jump aboard if need be should i see someone perform and downgrade a defender 🙂

I haven't seen many RMT's with Pelle or Tadic in them recently...

Tadic (16 goals and 14 assists last season)

Pelle (26 goals and 6 assists last season) "over his two years with Feyenoord, an average of 0.88 goals per game was third around Europe, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo more prolific"

People going with the tried and tested and the big money transfers it seems - Sanchez, Bony, Barkley, De Jong and Lukaku being favoured.

Tadic is a quality player but this is his first time in the prem and no idea what southampton are going to play like now after having sold half their first team.

Have a look at Pelle's goals from last season (find it on youtube). There is no way he's getting that much time and space in the Premier League. I think he'll be a bit like Bony was last season. Start off slowly as he adjusts to the pace and quality of the defenders then he'll work it out for the 2nd half of the year.

Tadic could be anything and is on my watch list for sure.

I follow Italian football and I can tell you about Pelle, don't fall for this prolific goal rate he has in the dutch league. Pelle when back home in Serie A was really struggling hardcore in that league. He never really found his footing no matter where he went and couldn't score really in his homeland and the moment he landed in that dutch league, he scored goals for fun. 55 in 66 games I believe. The point I am trying to bring up is that when he was in a tougher league, he did nothing but when he went to an easy league like holland, he scored like nothing. Keep in mind, the likes of Alfonso Alves was a goal scoring machine in holland and when he went england, he did nothing..... I'm not saying Pelle will end up like that, I'm just saying I can understand people not going for Pelle at all. I have to see to believe with that guy

Can probably take some value out of defense and put into better 3rd striker. Strikers generally earn more points than defenders in this game. You have 4 'big' defenders there and if your looking to invest more in defense its probably better to get 2 Chelsea defenders.

Maybe someone like Bony or one of the new strikers like Pelle or even Remy for 3rd striker.

        Appreciate the input
My thought process tho, is that Defenders in the 6.0 Price bracket had a lot higher score last season than any attacker in the same price Bracket.
For example, Koscielny last season scored 155 pts at the 6.0 price.
To get the same score out of an attacker you had to spend 8.5 on a Dzeko or a Bony.
Crouch at 6.0 only got 114 points

Don't really like the defence apart from Taylor and I think you need more United (particularly Mata who's looking good). I would downgrade Hazard to Mata, upgrade Campbell to at least a 6m striker (Austin/Long/Jelavic) and make some changes in the defence.
