Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

So I'm very interested in the Chelsea back line because of the strong opening fixtures as well as Mourinhos style. I have 6.0, so the question is.....
    Felipe Luis or Azpi?
Not sure if either is nailed on yet but one of them has to play.

The Chelsea back is so versatile that out of 5 defenders, 4 will play, but you cannot be sure of which of those 5 misses out.

          Equally confusing there.
Just pick a defender, 80% chance he'll play, as opposed to 50% for a keeper.

Both subject to rotation but the fact that Luis has got no competition for LB (Ivanovic will only play RB and CB) edges it for me.

Of course Azpi can play LB, but what I'm saying is that he would have to move to his second most preferred position, if that makes sense. IMO there's no better way of making this decision.

      the million dollar question this.

I'm going with Luis as he was a 20mil+ signing who is the only natural LB at the club.

Got to accept though, from time to time he will be rotated. As will all the DFers

    Hello guys

I am happy with this lot of players

    Krul/ Foster
Caulker, Wisdom, Cameron, Cahill, N Taylor
    Mata, Ramsey, Siggy, Puncheon, Dejong
    Rooney, Dzeko, Costa

I might do last min changes and get A Young for Puncheon and upgrade Wisdom to a 4.5 def

Any thoughts on the same guys?

Good team, but I don't like so much money sitting on my bench (talking about midfield). If you're set on that strategy though, I'd downgrade Caulker to Ferdinand and upgrade Cameron to Huth because he's not nailed on and Stoke rotate so nicely with Swansea.

He'd do well, he should play most games, barring injury, if he stays. But it still seems a big IF. I think he could replicate his form at Newcastle, and if QPR were consistently a solid side he could maintain it. But again that's all a big IF.

He should start the season, but you wouldn't want to waste a transfer early on. Taking a chance on him is fine, definitely. It's just whether he can hold down that spot. If you do take a chance though, consider Evans over Simpson.

Get rid of Simpson (heard he is going to be replaced by a new or imminent signing) PVA is 4.5 and nailed at sunderland.

Defence can be improved by ditching Sanchez for Ramsey but you have already considered that and dont want to I assume?

That leaves eriksen imo. Ship him for Tadic/De Jong/Snodgrass/Valencia and use $$ to boost defence

No worries mate, I know what it's like... I've been there...

Coke is a horrible thing... so glad to have seen the back of it...

I actually look forward to drinking just soda water and ice now... 😀

And if you read all the research on Soda water (carbon dioxide and water), it has been proven that it has no negative effects on your body, except maybe a gassy stomach if you drink too much of it...

It's all the added chemicals in coke like phosphoric acid that erodes your teeth enamel and cause problems etc...

I can easily downgrade Costa after his Burnley and Leicester fixtures and go for a mid priced forward in attack. I've spent 33m on defense, so its not that much

well he isn't really a striker - cuts in from the flank or plays as a support striker

Something I've been struggling with during my endless hours of squad tinkering is the Ramsey-Sanchez conundrum. Coming in at 9.0 you've got Ramsey, who despite missing a third of last season still managed to end up the seventh highest scoring midfielder in the game. Then you have Alexis Sanchez. He is steeply priced at 10.5, but those of us who have watched him play know that his explosive pace and high work rate could deliver hatfuls of goals and assists. The question is of course, which one? As a winger/striker, Alexis certainly has more fantasy potential, but can he fulfill it? That is a question many fantasy managers will be asking themselves. He was the 4th top scorer in La Liga last season, behind only Messi Ronaldo and Costa, But it is yet to be seen whether Sanchez will be able to deliver the goods in the PL, but it would be a pretty safe bet to say yes. On the other hand, we already know that Ramsey can deliver in this league. If he can replicate his form from last term, he's a necessary part of any successful FPL team. An encouraging sign for Ramsey owners is the rumored signing of Khedira or Carvalho. Ramsey partnering with an out and out DM will give him more license to attack, increasing his appeal. There is a third option here, and that is to take both of them. I think they can form a great partnership with both scoring and providing assists in bunches. The problem with this of course is the price tag that comes with owning these two, and that will drive away many from getting both. As for me, I am rather scared of leaving either out of my squad, so we'll have to see how the community shield goes.

What are your thoughts on this conundrum? Comment below!

I've thought long and hard about it, but Ramsey is always the one that comes out on top...

Hopefully both will do well, but the extra 1.5m for me is what swings it...

I think early doors Ramsey will, at the very least, match his output...

It's a proper brain bender. I'd really like to have Sanchez in my team but it's a steep price for a new arrival to the Prem. The only thing I'm certain of is that Ramsey will be in straight away. But if Sanchez is used up front I'll find a place for both.

With these two, I'll stick with Ramsey just because of a personal preference. I should start off with Alexis Sanchez. I'm a Barcelona Supporter, ever since I was a kid, because my family supports Barcelona so I grew into that so I can say one thing or two. Last season here with Sanchez, yes he scored about 19 la liga goals, only three men scored more but you have to consider where those goals and assists came from. He had 19 goals and 10 assist in all competitions and 17 goals and 8 assists if I'm not mistaken came from home. He only had 2 goals and 2 assists in his away games. So based on that, it depends on the person you are, if you are wanting to keep him knowing he has a chance to fire home alot but really be cold on the road, then you can put him, if you don't have the patience for that, then don't do it

it seems like we will play more of a 4-1-4-1 this season - ramsey is gonna be making them runs as usual

alexis looks like he could have a great impact, and should be fit for the season

ramsey is safer I think, but balance your funds if you need to make the move to alexis

it brings you to the qns of hazard vs fab.. if u are getting hazard and would want to have an decent defence and other good players(mata costa rooney etc)..u are likely to end up with ramsey. otherwise if u have fab u would like sanchez.

      currently on fab+sanchez

The thing is Sanchez will play striker once Walcott comes back, on occasion at least. But ATM Walcott isnt back, so I start thinking about getting him in around September when he's had more time to gel. But again, planning transfers doesnt work out, and if Sanchez has a crazy GW1, his price will rocket with all the casuals and Ill have to take an early hit to get him in.

you need to put at least 1m more into your defence though imo

    Current front 7 looks like:

    Mata Ramsey Fabregas Siggy
    Rooney Costa Bojan

and can get up to another 9.0 to complete the midfield. Have no City, Liverpool or Spurs coverage so was thinking
    A. Silva
    B. Sterling
    C. Eriksen
    D. or someone else?

Obviously, the cheaper the player, the extra I can spend on my somewhat cheap but cheerful defence.

I get what you're saying but I'm just concerned that in Liverpool and City's case, they scored over 200 goals between them last season so surely I'll be missing out not having an attacking player from at least one of them?

I think it would be wise to have players from the highest scoring teams (Liverpool and Man City). Sterling will justify his price this year i have no doubt so i'd nominate him from that list

Henderson is a solid and steady player, will give you a lot of 2 pointers followed by the occasional big score. If you want Henderson take him, but dont do it just for the sake of having a liverpool attacker as he's more a CM whereas Sterling plays more in the final 3rd.

So I'm basically playing 3-5-2. I want my third striker who will cost 4.5m to just sit on the bench and not fall in value, I don't even expect him to play. What's the best kind of striker for this, one with high or low ownership. Also one who may get a few mins or one who will definitely not play

Middle of the range ownership actually, IMO...

Too high an ownership and then he will surely see a price drop as he will be the one the casuals' sacrifice to make way for the latest trend... (.ie, Zamora Vaz Te)

Too low an ownership and it get a bit murky in terms of FISO and TFPL understanding exactly how many -NTIs it takes for them to drop in value... (0.1% guys)

So, middle range... someone like Barnes or Wood...

Evening, morning or afternoon wherever you are fellow FFS' ers. I just wanted to make some random bollocks announcement that 16 years ago today, my rents and I packed our bags and left sunny Manchester, for shite Florida!

Dual citizen now, still haven't left Florida, love the fact we actually have MORE live footy on telly here than back in the U.K, and as much as I miss goin Maine Road, Eastlands, Moss Rose, Edgely Park and so on, I wouldn't take it back for anything!

Some/many/most of you may think I post/talk utter bollocks on here, but thanks for everything so far, these past few years I have been visiting this site.

I am fairly sure this is MY PRIMARY website.

Can't wait for the season to kickoff!!!!!

    Random, soppy bollock post over!

Too top heavy IMO... kills the defense...

Think you need to cut about 1.5-2m from the strikeforce and upgrade the defense, just to ensure you have 4-5 nailed on defenders... Cameron, Wisdom & Duff might not play, and you could be left with 2 playing defenders...

I was thinking to downgrade a striker, but if you are set on those 3 guys, then yes, it could work...

The choice in players is a little risky though... also I would choose Jones/Evans at first since we can't be absolutely sure Luis will start, so he's a slight rotation risk... Rose has just signed a 5yr deal, and Bavies is not guaranteed to start either... perhaps Cavies, Ward or Caulker?

your defense is poor..with cameron wisdom duff all not confirmed starters..and your defence is not rotatable at all.

your attack may be good but u are losing points every week from your defence.

not much good option out there tbh for strikers. If not downgrade fab to dejong...upgrade duff and wisdom to N taylor..chester etc.

A cheap 5 man defence can be like below

chester ferdinand ward N taylor cameron(may not be starter though..huth better)

you just need 1/1.5 more million to have 5 starting defenders. at least u are well covered from injuries and also allow u to rotate your defence..
