Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

  Rooney and Costa have been nailed for the past week or so which looks good for them since I have been tinkering like a crazy person recently. The third spot I have been doing between Dzeko/Jovetic/Pelle/Austin and then doing a job to my 4th midfield spot and my defenders in general based on which price point I have at that 3rd forward spot. Still have no idea which I like best though...

    Do you think Ramsey will have more PPG than Silva? Last season wasnt Silva's best and Ramsey's best till now. Still Silva had the better PPG.

  The only thing I have a problem with is having double Newc at the back. Even when you rotate onto them for favorable fixtures they are still not such a good defensive team to inspire much confidence. If you are looking at backing a bottom table team for a defender in that budget bracket I would prefer to spread the risk. Maybe buy a share into a promoted side defender instead of Coloccini.

    If Koeman fails to buy a CB by the time GW1 starts I would be too fearful of him buying one before the transfer window closes and being stuck with Yoshida since he's been very forthcoming with the fact that he is looking to buy a replacement for Lovren. The risk outweighs the reward I think.

Can someone explain the Siggy love that is going on, he has played 76 games in PL for 15 goals. For the same price Henderson ( my current 5th MID ) plays for a top 4 side and after coming of his best season will be more and more involved in Liverpools attack

  was an absolute beast last time he was at swansea, albeit for only half a season. reason to believe if he'd played there the full season he'd have easily got past 200 points. whether that applies this time around is a different question, but you can't read much into his spurs form, he was frequently shoved out wide and didn't get a consistent run in the team, whereas at swansea he should be in the hole week in week out.

  Siggy was priced as a bench player for Spurs, then he moved to Swansea where he is nailed on, on a majority of set pieces and has a history of scoring FPL points.

For those who missed it, this is what I posted yesterday:

It is with immense pleasure that I announce that the winner of the pre season quiz competition is Notorious. Congratulations!

Notorious, a regular FFS poster, won 11 of the 38 quizzes that I hosted. The initial plan was to have 40 quizzes, but Notorious’ 3 quiz lead over Innsie has prompted me to call time. I would also like to give a special mention to Innsie, who gave Notorious’ a tough fight by winning 8 of the quizzes but just fell short at the end.

I would also like to thank all the FFS posters who took part in the quizzes, and made them more fun. Thank you also for your feedback, and for pointing out whenever I was wrong. I would also like to thank all the mods for their contribution and Mark for providing me the platform to host these quizzes.   Steven Davis. QPR and Soton have a great rotation. Of course there's always risk of bench points when you rotate your attackers but I like the idea and my team looks more balanced this way.

  I really want to rotate my 4th, 5th mid and 3rd striker... but I know it's misplaced money...
  
  I'd prefer to have Siggy, Arnie & Austin/Ideye/Jelavic etc... over Siggy, Marney & Dzeko... but if I wanted to make a hasty change, I'd have to makes two transfers redirect the funds needed...

      I think Ideye or Jelavic covers their fixtures better...
      
      In GW1, 3, 4, when you'd want to bench one of them... you can have:
      
      Ideye - SUN, swa, EVE
      Jelavic - qpr, avl, WHM
      
      If you got Austin, you'd have to play Siggy away to Chelsea or Austin away to United...

        Yeah but you are also assuming that you have all three of these players for the first three GWs of the season. You know that things will crop up and your knee will jerk and it will go to hell. If you have medium funds tied up into these fringe players it will limit your ability to make lateral transfers once the season starts.

  I love the time just before gw window closes. Its like being in a noisy bar on a friday night knowing all the fun of the weekend is ahead of you. Everyone is talking at once, noone listening to each other and you lucky to reply to one post before the page is lost. Being generally drunk on a saturday night I find myself typing random thoughts out knowing they will get drowned out in the noise.

  i'm actually a little dubious at the moment about shaw nailing down that starting place. cameron is a doubt, and wisdom is likely to be a sub. jovetic is a huge punt at this stage, i wouldn't go anywhere near him despite his pre-season, but it's your risk. 😉 rest is fine.

  i don't think there are any decent alternatives to dzeko (that's why i have two 10.5s and a 5.5 up top, there's not much good stuff in between). ramsey over silva perhaps? idk, i'm a huge silva fan and he might prove me wrong, we'll see.

        First 9 weeks Swansea play manu, BUR, WBA, chelsea, SOU, sun, NEW, sto, LEI. Sure there are 2 very hard fixtures, 1 hard but the other 6 are good fixtures. Far from dubious imo
        
        Oh and i know the 3 players i listed after punt are unproven or a rotation threat. This is why I prefaced them with the word punt....

    I think several hundred thousand people play it worldwide, so 'nobody' is not quite accurate.
    
    I ask because I expect that the collective mind of FFS would have encountered it, and I'm not sure why more don't find it enticing.
    
    The main difference is that there is no penalty for transfers - you can replace your entire team each week if you like, though price rises are more abrupt than in Barclays FPL so you don't discard players too casually.
    
    It appeals to me also because the scoring is not as ham-fisted as in Barclays, where you can put in a man-of-the-match performance and get only 2 pts + measly bonus. That is, in YFF you get significant points for Shot-on-target, Blocked Shot, etc.
    
    Which to me seems a lot more representative of what's happening on the pitch.

  looks pretty solid all around. you're right that defense could do with an upgrade, but would 0.5 really make a difference on any of those players. you could downgrade dzeko as we don't know if he is nailed on completely and that might free up some cash
