Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Ross Barkley

A year ago, few Fantasy radars were picking up Ross Barkley as a Fantasy option. The 20-year-old made just two starts in David Moyes’ final year at the Goodison helm but the arrival of Roberto Martinez transformed his fortunes and ensured the playmaker become a key figure in the Merseysiders’ sixth place finish.

Starting last season priced at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Barkley’s goal in the season opener against Norwich fired up an early bandwagon. A further strike in Gameweek 6 continued to see Fantasy managers invest heavily in the budget midfielder but the goals quickly dried up: Barkley scored just once in the subsequent 22 rounds of fixtures before finishing the season with a promising three goals in his final nine appearances of 2013/14.

Key Factors

    • As the season approaches, Barkley has committed his long-term future to the Toffees after signing an improved four-year deal. While the buzz around Goodison surrounds £28 million man Romelu Lukaku, it’s perhaps telling that Martinez decided against scouring the market for a new playmaker – instead, the Spaniard took time to talk up Barkley’s talents after the youngster penned his new contract:

“He is the best young English player I have worked with. When you assess or evaluate a player you always come up with an outstanding talent or something that has made them different. Ross is the most complete footballer which makes him different from the rest. Technically he has got the talent of a player who could be born in probably the best development markets around Europe. He has got the power, pace and physicality you need in the Premier League. He’s like a hybrid of an English player and a foreign player and it’s very rare to find that combination.”

    • In his breakout season for the Toffees, Barkley started 25 times and was fielded as a sub on nine occasions. Bearing in mind he missed a couple of matches with a toe problem, he essentially failed to feature in only two of the league games he was available for. As the season unfolded, though, Martinez was a little wary of his game time and gave him the full 90 minutes just twice from Gameweek 20 onwards but as he matures as a footballer, we’d expect him to be afforded further minutes as he becomes more influential on the Toffees’ attacking forays.

    • His game time may have been managed to some extent last season (averaging 70.7 minutes per appearance) but Barkley still offered plenty of threat in the final third. A total of 79 attempts on goal was still third highest amongst midfielders behind Philippe Coutinho and Kevin Mirallas and underlines his attacking potential. With more time on the pitch, then, that’ll only increase, though there’s no question there’s plenty of room for improvement when it comes to finishing – a lowly conversion rate of 7.6% led to just six goals, three less than Mirallas’ nine.

    • Whilst some may feel a 7.0 price tag is a little steep for a return of 112 points in last year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Barkley – as the playmaker in a top six side – may yet prove good value. Granted, Everton face a tough start but Martinez’ side showed they are more than capable of holding their own against the so-called bigger teams – two wins over United, allied with triumphs over Chelsea and Arsenal underline that their main Fantasy assets can prevail regardless of opponent. Twelve months on from Martinez’ appointment, Everton are now far more familiar with the Spaniard’s possession-based approach and with Lukaku leading the line again, there’ll be no settling-in period required this time round. As the popular midfielder in the FPL game (28% ownership) Barkley certainly has the weight of expectation on his shoulders – if he finds an end product, that show of faith could quickly be vindicated.

20 mins in Charity Shield and the start next week. I can see it personally.

It's made me swerve both Dzeko and Jovetic having being certain on having one.

I think Soldado is the most likely to explode this season.

Scoring stats were amazing in Spain. Far more attacking minded strategy from the new manager with Erikson and Lamela feeding him.

I really think his athleticism in defensively pressing and then being available in and around the box from the turnover will suit him. Soldado needs space to work with in and around the box and the counter attack style will suit him IMO.

Ade however is a post up striker that succeeds from his strength from the ball played in direct.

What goalkeeper combination is everyone going for? I'm tempted to spend big and go with Hart and De Gea or Hart and Courtois. Assuming Courtois is first choice of course. What is the story there? I haven't been keeping up with pre-season.

  7. NIGHTHIKER - I Kane, I Shaw…
    • 9 Years

Ok, would value a rate on this team and some feedback:

Did a bit of tinkering today, as Mutch's arrival dampens the appeal of Hoilett I did Hoilett -> Albrighton, which gave me 0.5 spare so I decided to upgrade Coloccini to a 5.0. The idea is, (as I have 2 4.0s on the bench who are may or may not play) I pick 3 defenders with favourable fixtures Gameweeks 1-3, then I intend to wildcard in the first international break after GW3, as I always have done.

    Current team is
    Foster (Krul)
Evans Debuchy C Davies (Wisdom, Hutton)
    Sanchez Mata Eriksen Siggurdsson (Albrighton)
    Rooney, Costa, Jovetic

I'm pretty torn between C Davies and Caulker. Although Hull have the best 3 opening fixtures (other than those of Man U), 2 of those games are after European ties, should they get through, and I fear rotation. Caulker poses more of a goal threat, but they do face a difficult trip to Spurs in GW2. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hmm, I see what you mean.. As I said I wildcard usually during the 1st international break and Jovetic looks a good bet for the 1st 3 gws to me.. however I haven't really been keeping tabs of Kun's fitness so I might transfer out.. who I should replace him with though? (and please don't say Bojan)

Ok, have taken on board your advice and done Jovetic -> Dzeko, freeing up the 0.5m by swapping C Davies for a 4.5 def with good GW2 and GW3 fixtures (yet to decide between N Taylor and Coloccini, would get a Hull def but I don't feel they offer any completely nailed on options for 4.5, and I am conscious about European rotation)

You might make a good start and not feel the need to wildcard, I'd get Caulker as a potential season keeper.

        • 9 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, overall I prefer Caulker to C Davies - the thing is I usually do an early wildcard for team value as by GW3 we'll know the players who are likely to rise in price - and using the wc later on can destroy your team value as you only keep half of the profits you make on players.

Ah yes, just spotted Mutch has been added. 5.5m as expected.

I suppose Caulker edges it out of the two. Would a Stoke defender fit the rotation? Pieters could be an option.

The Chile midfielder, 27, was 7/2 to make the switch with all three firms yesterday morning.

However, those odds were cut into 6/4 until they pulled the plug on the market.

Better to have Jovetic and 4.0 at the back and play 3-4-3 or Bojan and Terry (or other 6.5) and rotate formation between 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 depending on fixtures?

generally I am done with my team, and I am pretty sure I'll stick with it till the game begins.

The only thing that left are 2 defensive spots for my 3rd defender in 3-4-3 formation:

    DDG - Gillks
    Luis - Ward - _____ - _____ - Wisdom
    Sanchez - Fabregas - Mata - Siggy - Albrighton
    Rooney - Dzeko - Giroud

    Budget left: 9 million

Who should I put into those 2 last spots?

    DDG (Gilks)

    Luis Davies Huth (Naylor) (Mariappa)

    Fabregas Mata Ramsey Lamela (Siggy)

    Rooney Jovetic Austin

    Defence rotates well.
    Siggy and Austin to rotate.

    Decision of the day:

    A) Luis + Davies (Hull)

    Or

    B) Vertonghen + Evans

Think Luis could be a good(ish) value way into that Chelsea defence, and Davies should be pretty solid.

But that Vert/Evans combo... I really like it. And it'll be easy to bring a Chelsea defender in when United's fixtures get tougher.

    Agree? Disagree?

I think Azpilicueta is being over-looked big-time on this site. Because of his versatility of being able to play LB and RB, i foresee him having plenty of game-time. Luis is a solid left-back no doubt but even he won't play every game. There will be times where Ivan goes RB and Azpi goes too LB, whether that's at the start of a game or him moving there during a game. I'm going with Azpi basically 😆

    1. Sunny 😎
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 10 months ago

If I pay 6.0 for a defender than I want him to play every week and not be rotation risk.

      1. Your Mum's Athletic
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

What I was trying to say is that because he can play LB and RB and he's the only cover they have at LB, he will see more game-time because of it

        1. Sunny 😎
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

Ivan has been playing RB for the past 3 or 4 seasons and Luis is the only proper LB in the squad so I would wait till things are more clear before getting Azpi
