Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

Our series of “Sleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcott’s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelsea’s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmaker’s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winter’s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boy’s displays weren’t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mata’s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders – Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard – scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrard’s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniard’s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in “the hole” behind a front two and has scored twice during his side’s unbeaten US tour.

Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and we’ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniard’s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver – his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazard’s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgian’s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running – showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not a popular view but I'm not convinced that Monk knows how to get the best out of him like Rodgers did. I'm glancing elsewhere (Puncheon or a wild punt on Holtby).

As I say, not a popular view so don't go setting any stock by it 😉

Somebody posted this idea the other day thought I'd reiterate it.

Mangala is a quick and natural left-sided CB, he's much more able than Demichelis to cover an attacking, free-roaming LB. Make of that what you will...

I think the recent move to 4-5-1 has made it essential to choose strikers who are going to be absolutely nailed-on. So, for example, I won't be going near Giroud for now. There is more margin for error in the midfields - it's unlikely that any of the viable options won't get regular game-time.

Hey Guys , how would you tweek this kind risky defence lite team.

    Mannone/Myhill
Wisdom- Bruce - Cameron- (Roberge)- (Diakite)
Hazard - Ramsey - Mata - Silva- Coutinho
    Rooney - Costa- Naismith

I'm thinking of punting on Naismith and let Coutinho come in on auto sub. since Lukaku looks like missing the first match, but its a shame to have to lose liverpool cover against weakened Saints. Any ideas ? I could accomodate better with fabregas/Sterling instead of coutinho/hazard to have room for chambers in defence too ..

Hey guys, i see a hell of a lot of people are opting for Bojan (15.3%) and all i will say is approach with caution! From what i have read and from what my friend saw of him last season (Ajax fan) - 'woeful is a understatement!'

    Now i know certain players can fit in better and suite a certain clubs style of play more than others but this bandwagon for a player solely because he once played for Barca seems a bit shortsighted. Now i am aware that Bojan has had a decent pre-season. But. As well all know, pre-season should be taken with a few pinches of salt and a quick read from a section of this article commenting on his time at Ajax will tell you why;

'His performance in a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen must have had Ajax fans rubbing their hands with glee. Stationed wide on the right, Krkic was a constant menace against the decent German opposition. He worked hard, combined well with his new team-mates, produced flick after trick, made some intelligent runs, set up one goal and scored another. But it was not long however before that glee evaporated into thin air. According to OptaJohan, it took him 665 playing minutes to score his first goal for the club – he would only add three more to his season’s tally – and although he had three assist in his first six league games, he would record no more for the season.' - ( Full article here - http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jun/02/bojan-krkic-barcelona-ajax-milan-roma-whatever-happened)

That's right while on loan at Ajax he only only found the net 4 times out of 24 (7 as sub) appearances. Now compare that with Stoke's other recent summer striker signing Mame Diouf - a name we are more familiar to here in the premier league and although 1m more than Bojan, the 6 ft 1in Senegal striker found the net an impressive 26 times out of 57 appearances for Hannover 96 and appears to be a much improved player from the one we remember at Manchester United and Blackburn a few years ago.

All in all it's best not to get carried away just because a player once played for a big club, let's face it if they were that good then they would still be there! On the upside to Bojan, he is a player with a point to prove not only to himself but to the whole of Europe and where better to do it that in the most watched league in the world.

    Hope this helps.

GOOD AFTERNOON ladies and gents! 🙂

Here is regularly pondered dilemma we are ALL facing:
    A) to LOAD UP in defence?
    B) or GO BIG in attack?

Having mused long and hard about it I have opted for B as I can downgrade expensive strikers in the first couple of weeks to buy the performing bandwagons (or hopefully just stick with the ones I have chosen!)

Here is my GW1 team, I know what you're thinking, at face value it appears weak at the back, however it offers me the following coverage for the first 5 week (which I will not change!!)

Begovic (Krul) - rotated each week
    Evans Wisdom Chester (Ward, Bartley)
    Eriksen Ramsey Mata Fabregas (Sigurdsson)
    Rooney (C) Costa (VC) Bojan

    qpr SWA SUN
    WHM STO BUR
    avl bur WBA
    BUR WHM QPR
    new leics SOT

    My doubts:
    1) Bojan - new hero or massive zero? I reckon he's worth a punt! Any better choices?? -
APPRECIATE THE ADVICE ABOVE BTW! 😉
    2) Costa - good preseason but might struggle but first season in Prem? Might struggle! Would like to go Sturridge however don't warm to Liverpool's opening fixtures.
    3) No Hazard! Go Mata to Herrera to free up some cash?

Please rate out of 10 and share your views!

    Much appreciated! 😀
