Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1

We’re taking a new approach with this season’s Captaincy article. From now on, we’ll split our pre-deadline regular into three parts, taking in the weekly Captain Poll, the player statistics and the Rate My Team projections.

The first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

With a massive 59% of the votes cast so far, Wayne Rooney is the runaway leader ahead of United’s home encounter with Swansea. Over the course of the summer, Rooney finished top scorer for Louis van Gaal’s side with four strikes to his name and with Robin van Persie still sidelined due to a lack of match fitness, the England international has now risen to 44% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Juan Mata’s role in “the hole” in United’s new 3-4-1-2 formation has persuaded over 3% of voters to hand the Spaniard the armband as the Red Devils prepare to entertain a Swans side that managed just two clean sheets in 14 matches under Garry Monk in 2013/14. Mata notched twice over the summer and impressed in the final few months of the season, with six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in 15 appearances.

Sitting in second spot – albeit some way behind Rooney – is Chelsea’s Diego Costa. The Brazilian has made an immediate impact since arriving from Atletico Madrid and his four goals and a trio of assists over the summer have persuaded over 12% to select him in this week’s Poll ahead of Monday’s trip to Burnley. Seen as the ideal frontman for Jose Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1, Costa is rapidly rising in ownership and now resides in 33% of FPL sides as he looks to replicate the form that delivered 27 goals in La Liga last time round. Eden Hazard’s late return to pre-season training has earned him just 1% of the votes cast, with Cesc Fabregas picking up 2% after being occasionally utilised in “the hole” behind Costa in recent matches.

You’ve placed Daniel Sturridge in third position as Liverpool prepare for life without Luis Suarez. Having recovered from a hamstring problem, the Reds frontman struck his first goal of the pre-season in Sunday’s 4-0 rout of Dortmund and with the Saints losing two of last term’s first-choice back-four in the summer sales, Fantasy faith in Sturridge is building – almost 7% are willing to hand him the armband.

Arsenal’s impressive win over City in Sunday’s Community Shield has brought Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud into the reckoning – the pair have been selected by a combined 5%+ of voters, whilst Bojan Krkic’s form over the summer has caught the eye. The Stoke forward has netted three times since joining the Potters and he’s subsequently earned 1.4% of the votes cast, the same as Yaya Toure.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Apologies WR.

We upgraded all the servers aside from HC yesterday - we try to anticipate the volume every year but every year it takes us by surprise. We just doubled our capacity on the comments server DB.

You've no idea how stressful this week is for us in terms of coping with the crush and we're throwing a lot of hardware at the problem. It's a nice problem to have but that doesn't make it any easier when we're trying to cope with it.

I've just posted a UFPL article.

Thanks for the reply Mark. You are wrong that I've no idea how stressful tonight must have been, I've put myself in your shoes all night and it wasn't a pretty picture. I just feel it could have been avoided as traffic has seen a massive (and imo predictable) upturn last few nights.

RMT and post your team in the reply and ill rate it back in depth!

    Bego - (Gilks)
    Cahill - Jones - PvA - (4,5, Hutton)
Mata - Siggy - Erik - Rambo (Marney)
    Costa - Roon - Dzeko

really struggling for the 4.5 and unsure about Jones, could do with some last minute tinkering, any suggestions what to do with the two?

My Lineup is almost identical to yours (ARSENALALLTHEWAY) - Hopefully its a good team!
I had the same issue with finding a decent back line.
At the moment I have Cahill Ferdinand Clyne Chester N Taylor
Since QPR + Southampton rotate quite well, as do Hull + Swansea perhaps this may help you out? Majority of weeks you can find 2 starters to play alongside Cahill

Thanks for the indepth reply mate, youre right that QPR and Soton rotate well, my only qualm is that id prefer to only rotate two of my defenders and have 2 big hitters I can start every week!

So my team at the moment is:
            Begovic (Gilks)
Cahill Clyne Ferdinand Chester N Taylor
            Ramsey Mata Sigurdsson Eriksen Marney
            Dzeko Rooney Costa

My main issue is the same as yours. Ideally I would like two big hitters.
You could potentially have Cahill Debuchy Chester Taylor Duff - Hull, Burnley Swansea rotate well? Not sure what you think of that.

I guess the other problem is whether having Cahill + 4.5m is better than two 5.5s?

Would be interested to see what you think

Just to add, whilst Caulker is obviously the better QPR option I heard an interview from Harry Redknapp saying that Ferdinand will play almost as a sweeper behind the other two CBs, I guess similar to Ron Vlaar in the World Cup, so he could be a cheap buy-in into the QPR defence

Team is awesome (as it is practically identical to mine 😉
I think your Debuchy idea is a really good one, attacking fullback and i think were gonna see some clean sheets after Per is settled back into the team.
So atm ive got Cahill - Debuchy - PvA - Hutton and the 4.5

Btw im going for PvA because good going forward and Hutton as nailed on and Aston villa better defensively than Burnley.

              Now who for 4.5?

Well if you want someone to rotate with Sunderland then I guess you should look at Newcastle. Perhaps Coloccini? They rotate home/away perfectly through the season.

Hutton is a good option, however, Villas fixtures after GW3 are pretty horrendous.

I like the look of PVA but i'm just questioning whether Hull / Swansea will be a better rotation than Newcastle / Sunderland?

At the moment i'm looking at
                        Cahill Debuchy Chester PVA Ferdinand

Bartley is admittedly a punt for swansea at 4 but if he can secure the CB position alongside Williams I think he could be a good investment. At 4m there's not a huge amount to lose and he rotates nicely with Chester.
And then PVA looks like a tempting 4.5m defender considering his attacking potential

Since I'm desperate for comments for my own team, I'll comment what I have comments on!

I'm not sold on Costa myself in the long run but picked him for the first couple of weeks. I think he will dry out after that and will probably replace him myself with another prospect. Dzeko could be worth the money, although ManC rotation is a constant mystery to me. I am generally expecting ManU to not do THAT much better this season than they did last year but I'm in the minority and undoubtedly Rooney/Mata will probably earn points maybe even enough to justify the price. Erik/Rambo seems good to me and Siggy maybe as well, although I don't know what to expect from him now, really. The defense I really shouldn't touch because I'm completely clueless with what to pick myself but as for the 4.5 option... N. Taylor? I don't know 😛

      Now! RMT:
      Courtois - Green
      Chester - Caulker - Taylor - Debucy - Wisdom
Hazard - Silva - Henderson - Sterling - El Ahmadi
      Sturridge - Costa - Bojan

You going with both Sterling and Sturridge considering their tough opening fixtures? That's the one thing I'm really worried about. Want to play Sturridge but he has quite a difficult run at the start. I put in Sterling though because Rodgers REALLY seems to love him.

Henderson as well! Yeah, it's a bit risky and I might be somewhat blinded (am a Pool fan) but I have confidence they will deliver decently even in the beginning. Better than that in the long run.

Firstly, Bojan has to go, the only way I can see this stupid bandwaggon is to a very dark place, Sturridge and Rooney both going to get you goals, but its one or the other and for me the 1m extra for Rooney is very useful. Hazard to Fabregas I would do, to save up cash and also because Hazard hasnt really had a proper preseason and id wait on it to see where the Chelsea mids all fit in together. Defense IMO needs Chelsea cover, rest of the team is fine.

Cheap, good opening fixtures, good pre-season, no other great picks in the same price bracket. That's good enough for me, I have .5 in the bank in case he doesn't deliver and a 6.0 starts scoring. Will probably get rid by GW 3 if he doesn't show any point potential by then.

    Davies or Chiriches?

Start Cork away v Liverpool or Sigurdsson away v Man Utd?

    Foster (Mannone)

    Blackett Terry Davies/Chiriches (Wisdom Bruce)

    Mata Fabregas Silva Siggy (Cork)

    Rooney Costa Giroud

    Any advice?

Neither nailed, Kaboul if want instead. Caulker and Clyne are options for 5.0 as well.

      Start Siggy.

Not sure about Blackett unless you're gnna transfer him out, could get PVA/Chester or even Chambers for only GW1 then transfer out.

Still trying to keep up with the page turnover.....there must be about 100 posts per minute

This crazy....I post summit then the server crashes and the page disappears and I post and the page disappears somewhere else. Should be a special "members only" post area....way too many people on here. Anyway, I will try again with my simple question

I have now given myself a dilema as to which of these two I should I play in GW1 alongside Mata, Hazard and Ramsey?

    A Mutch
    B Young

I have Rooney, DC and Bojan up front

Okay I'm finished and going to screw my girlfriend now lol. Final team for GW1 will be :

    Begovic [Elliot]
    Azpil, James, Chambers [Naughton] [Bruce]
    Sterling, Ramsey, Mata, Hazard [Marney]
    Bojan, Rooney, Costa

Azpil should play. Chambers will definetly play so potentially I have Naughton to come in for James if he doesn't play. Bruce to come in against a poor QPR as a last resort. If needed I'll use funds from Azpil (if he doesn't play to cover transfer)

players I'll be looking out for are Jovetic, Sturridge, Bony and Lukaku

Friday night before the season starts is always ridiculously manic. I'm not sure what the solution would be - take it from me, we're always trying to cope with the volume we get but solutions aren't straightforward.

Segregating the members from other visitors is not something I want to take on lightly but obviously, it's something we have to consider for future seasons.

Three cheers for that.....rather than trying to cope with the volume which just means meaningless Q pages flying past our eyes we need to find a way to reduce the volume and limit useless casual posts.....possibly....DARE I SAY IT......by actually slowing down response time

Reminder for anyone playing the Sky game, finish setting your captain choices now, because come midnight you can only change once for the next week.

Though I suppose you could long-windedly transfer players in and out until the deadline, making the captaincy move around like that, without actually using the captain change. Save the hassle either way.

Not sure what you mean there......I will transfer in a single big defender each round, rotate the rest of my defense and leave the rest of the team alone for 8 GW's and see if it actually picks up the +400 pts RTM predicts for it......I doubt it but it is better than agonising every week
