Scout Report – Alberto Moreno

Liverpool confirmed the capture of Sevilla’s left-back Alberto Moreno for £12 million last week, marking their ninth signing of the summer. Although the new boy was not registered in time to be eligible for Sunday’s clash with Southampton, manager Brendan Rodgers is predicting an instant impact from the 22-year-old Spaniard:

“Alberto is a player with huge potential, but importantly he is also ready to come in and contribute straight away. He is quick, strong and serves the ball really well. We have monitored him in Spain for some time and every time I have seen him I have been greatly impressed.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Seville, Moreno is a product of his hometown youth side. Having been signed up as a 13-year-old, his first-team debut came in 2012 against Athletic Bilbao, and in 2013 he was officially promoted to the main squad. Last year Moreno was a mainstay for their Europa League-winning season, appearing 43 times in all competitions.

The left-back grabbed three goals and two assists for Sevilla last year and offers a genuine threat from the back thanks to impressive levels of pace, strength and ball control. A versatile player, Moreno was featured in midfield five times for the Spanish side in the season gone by.

On the international stage, Moreno has made nine U21 fixtures and was in Spain’s provisional World Cup squad, having debuted against Georgia in qualifying and secured three caps. Many touted him as the preferable understudy for Jordi Alba but he failed to make the cut, with boss Vicente Del Bosque preferring to take 10 midfielders to Brazil and use Juanfran as a cover-all full-back.

THE PROSPECTS

Priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Moreno looks tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. An attacking threat capable of pushing forward and passing players with ease, his above-mentioned goal potential looks promising, bearing in mind only one Liverpool (Jon Flanagan, with a single strike) found the net last season.

Crucially, given the fact Liverpool conceded 50 times and mustered a mere 10 clean sheets in 2013/14, Moreno’s defensive capabilities also bode well and back up Rodgers’ statement that he could make an immediate impression on Merseyside. The 22-year-old’s 2.5 interceptions per game in La Liga last term places him comfortably above Liverpool’s two best full-backs in 2013/14 – Flanagan and Glen Johnson, with 1.7 apiece – essentially, his anticipation could be a key asset at the back and help provide the quick transitions from defence to attack as the Reds hit their opponents with speed on the counter.

If, as anticipated, Moreno can nail down the left-back berth, there are growing question marks over Glen Johnson’s pitch time on the opposite side. Youngster Javier Manquillo (5.0) was handed the right-back berth against Southampton and with the 5.0-priced Flanagan also offering competition once he recovers from a knee problem, there’s a chance that Johnson – now in the final 12 months of his contract – could be gradually edged out of the picture as Rodgers restructures his backline. Clearly, Manquillo or Flanagan offer the cheaper route if either can cement a starting role, though neither currently offers the security of starts likely potentially offered by Moreno or fellow new boy Dejan Lovren.

Certainly, having conceded at home to Southampton on Sunday, few Fantasy managers will be willing to invest in a Reds defence ahead of back-to-back trips to City and Spurs. Those next two matches should give us an indication into Rodgers’ thinking, then, and help firm up our potential plans ahead of an excellent schedule from Gameweek 4 onwards.

I like Pelle over Remy. Remy's probably a better player but could still get a transfer elsewhere and Southampton have better fixtures.

Seeing as you were all so generous to Bubz, I might as well give it a go whilst it's QUITE! 😛

    Begovic
    Chester • Terry • Jones • Debuchy
    Sigs • Ramsey • Mata • Hazard
    Rooney • Costa

    Gilks • Bojan • Bruce • Albrighton

Transfers: I'm thinking stick? Cesc is obviously the hot pick right now, but there's no way in for him (Hazard's a keeper for now).

Selection: Not sure about who to bench. Stoke couldn't score at home to Villa and Bojan isn't exactly nailed... so gone with Chester in Hull vs Stoke. Defender over attacker though? Thoughts?

Mirrors the Markovic signing in many ways, decent in Portugal, relatively unknown until linked to Pool and suddenly he's a top top player. Same thing going on with Rojo, both young and if they adapt will do well.

I agree with you, an issue with Liverpool and I fear United are going a similar path. Not unhappy with Rojo as I prefer him to the options they have currently but it's an entirely different ball game. Similar story with Shaw, he has PL experience which is good but he has a long way to go yet, a lot of money being spent on potential in this window it seems. Meanwhile the likes of Chelsea and City continue solidifying.

Same could be said about a lot of players. Take Enner Valencia for example. I'll watch maybe one or two Mexican league matches a week just cos it's on the tele and saw him "light it up" in the, erm, Mexican league. But I'll pretty much call bs on European's knowing who he was before the world cup. Who cares yeah?

Rojo's a starter for the Argentina team and SCP & Spartak. Not too bad imo.

Good evening boys and girls, I've been reading a lot tonight about Tom ince and tadic! Tadic is my tip for this season but I'm still unaware whether he is on pens or not!? I seen a bird called LUCY who seemed to know her stuff about soton so if you are reading this Lucy I would appreciate a little help!

Regarding this weekends fixtures, I'm completely lost as to who to bring in?! I had a nightmare start with a total of 44 points but managed to keep siggy, Chester and Hutton on the bench which came to a grand total of 33 points!! Lol I wasn't laffing on Saturday! My team is as follows....any ideas would help me considerably!

    Begovic, gilks

    Terry caulker Chester Hutton chambers

    Hazard mata siggy young Ramsey

    Costa Rooney bojan

Not good advice??? And how do you work that out?!? Let's look at it shall we?! Mata is going down in price either tomorrow or Saturday who is also in the same price bracket as a lot of other great choices such as silva Ramsey sterling etc so if he drops and you really want the likes of Ramsey that ain't guna be possible is it?! The last 3 games between united and Sunderland at the stadium of light have ended 1-0 to united so not many points really on offer let's be honest! Tadic has a fantastic run of games ahead and who is likely to rise in price rather quickly esp of he scores on Saturday against a team destined for the bottom 3 this season! Arguably the worst defence in the prem at present!!

So do you still feel that this is bad advice doosra???

Not really, I think I'll only have two premium strikers though, which means picking two from Rooney, Costa, Sturridge, Aguero which is going to be tough. Currently thinking Rooney and Sturridge and then getting Haz, Fab and Silva/Nasri, Sanchez looks good for UFPL too.

My defence is quite expensive currently so might rim it (double CHE and Baines plus a couple 5.0s)

Can we have a conversation about Tadic?

    Talking points:

    - Goal threat
    - Fitness level
    - Ability to adapt to premier league
    - State of Southampton team

Seen him in the Eredivisie for the past seasons:

      1. Good finisher, will convert the changes he gets. Thing is, he is a player who plays for the team and not for himself, so if he sees the chance to pass it to a team mate in a better position, he won't hesitate to pass to him. He did take all penalties and direct + indirect freekicks for his old team. Not sure whether he will be on them at S'hampton.
      2. Shouldn't be a problem, but it could turn out to be later on in the season. In the PL there is no winter break + 2 cups rather than one.
      3. This guy is a good footballer, nothing less than that. Should be no problem at all to adapt to the PL, I think it might be better for him in the PL as he was BY FAR the best player in his previous team which wouldn't allow him to play in the high tempo he might want to.
      4. Not too sure about the state of the current Southampton team, because of the changes that have been occurring.

Baines ain't worth it is he?

Baines v Arsenal? I'd look at Hull, Palace or Swansea for a clean sheet.. Although there were no home wins week 1!

Cabella away to Villa I'm debating making Captain, will probably bottle it and go with a Chelsea player though!

Can see Long being the next big bandwagon if he scores this weekend. Considerin we are starved of budget forwards Ppl will be on here saying "oh he's only 6 million.. check his fixtures! Oh they paid 12 million for him.. he has to start that too in a top 10 team" blah blah blah.. and before you know it we'll all be on the Long wagon. You have been warned.
