Scout Report – Alberto Moreno

Liverpool confirmed the capture of Sevilla’s left-back Alberto Moreno for £12 million last week, marking their ninth signing of the summer. Although the new boy was not registered in time to be eligible for Sunday’s clash with Southampton, manager Brendan Rodgers is predicting an instant impact from the 22-year-old Spaniard:

“Alberto is a player with huge potential, but importantly he is also ready to come in and contribute straight away. He is quick, strong and serves the ball really well. We have monitored him in Spain for some time and every time I have seen him I have been greatly impressed.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Seville, Moreno is a product of his hometown youth side. Having been signed up as a 13-year-old, his first-team debut came in 2012 against Athletic Bilbao, and in 2013 he was officially promoted to the main squad. Last year Moreno was a mainstay for their Europa League-winning season, appearing 43 times in all competitions.

The left-back grabbed three goals and two assists for Sevilla last year and offers a genuine threat from the back thanks to impressive levels of pace, strength and ball control. A versatile player, Moreno was featured in midfield five times for the Spanish side in the season gone by.

On the international stage, Moreno has made nine U21 fixtures and was in Spain’s provisional World Cup squad, having debuted against Georgia in qualifying and secured three caps. Many touted him as the preferable understudy for Jordi Alba but he failed to make the cut, with boss Vicente Del Bosque preferring to take 10 midfielders to Brazil and use Juanfran as a cover-all full-back.

THE PROSPECTS

Priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Moreno looks tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. An attacking threat capable of pushing forward and passing players with ease, his above-mentioned goal potential looks promising, bearing in mind only one Liverpool (Jon Flanagan, with a single strike) found the net last season.

Crucially, given the fact Liverpool conceded 50 times and mustered a mere 10 clean sheets in 2013/14, Moreno’s defensive capabilities also bode well and back up Rodgers’ statement that he could make an immediate impression on Merseyside. The 22-year-old’s 2.5 interceptions per game in La Liga last term places him comfortably above Liverpool’s two best full-backs in 2013/14 – Flanagan and Glen Johnson, with 1.7 apiece – essentially, his anticipation could be a key asset at the back and help provide the quick transitions from defence to attack as the Reds hit their opponents with speed on the counter.

If, as anticipated, Moreno can nail down the left-back berth, there are growing question marks over Glen Johnson’s pitch time on the opposite side. Youngster Javier Manquillo (5.0) was handed the right-back berth against Southampton and with the 5.0-priced Flanagan also offering competition once he recovers from a knee problem, there’s a chance that Johnson – now in the final 12 months of his contract – could be gradually edged out of the picture as Rodgers restructures his backline. Clearly, Manquillo or Flanagan offer the cheaper route if either can cement a starting role, though neither currently offers the security of starts likely potentially offered by Moreno or fellow new boy Dejan Lovren.

Certainly, having conceded at home to Southampton on Sunday, few Fantasy managers will be willing to invest in a Reds defence ahead of back-to-back trips to City and Spurs. Those next two matches should give us an indication into Rodgers’ thinking, then, and help firm up our potential plans ahead of an excellent schedule from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Young was never anything more than a stop gap. And what's worse he went straight back into his shell once the lights came on Saturday. Even when Rojo is fit I doubt Blackett will be dropped as long as we're playing 352.

Young was bad, agree, but so was most of the team. I think he deserves another chance to start. We'll see. If he gets it hopefully he takes it.

Will start unless Rojo is fit or LVG gives James a chance. With LVG you never know. Which is the reason I'm so bullish about Blackett. He seems to really rate the kid.

                      Yeah, mainly that 😆

The way I see it, most the players who performed GW1 will do well throughout, i.e Fabregas, Sterling, Ramsey, Siggy etc.

They were tipped to do well from the off and I don't want to be left behind.

The risk is weighed out by the risk of not jumping on all these players early, which may result in points losses, hits, or just having to go without.

I planned to save it, but I want to go without hits this season as much as I can. I only ever do a hit if I am certain it is worth it. If there is any deliberation, then it isn't happening.

I have the two we all started with alongside him. Ideal strike force, each of them has an easy route out if they get injured or become a no go.

How's this looking? Did my free transfer of Young > Siggy this week, 0.5 in bank.

    Krul
    Colo - Cahill - Jones
    Fab - Rambo - Eriksen - Siggy
    Rooney - Costa - Bojan

Bench: Bego - PVA - Debuchy - Barton

Barton, thats a first that ive seen!

I'd play PVA ahead of Jones. He's at home and attacks more.

Haha yeah I actually fancy him to do decently this year (he's on a fair amount of set pieces), even though I will probably end up transferring him out soon for JWP.

The issue I have about putting in PVA is that I have a feeling United will perform this week and I wasn't too impressed with Sunderland in GW1, they let 2 in vs WBA.

I just think that Arsenal are more likely to concede than Newcastle and Debuchy's attacking characteristics don't make up for the risk. It's not an easy decision though, I keep going back and forth....

    Ok.. so my team is
    Krulliot
    Terry Debuchy Chester CAULKER Hutton
    Siggy Ramsey Eriksen YOUNG DAVIS
    Rooney Sturridge Costa

Planning on swapping Caulker out GW 4 for a cheaper defender and upgradin Young/Davis to Henderson. can do this in 2 ways
    A) Young to Ince.. in 2 weeks if Ince looks good swap CAULKER for MOORE(free up cash) and upgrade Davis to Henderson.
    B) Young to JWP... in 2 weeks once the transfer window closes swap the one of Davis/JWP which aint performin/gets dropped for Henderson. for this i would have to swap CAULKER for PVA

Bit complicated.. but i need your help 🙂

          A) means Moore in defense instead of Caulker but with ince as my 5th mid
          B) means PVA in defense instead of Caulker but with the better option between JWP/Davis as my 5th mid.
Both options will have Hendo as my 4th mid

Caulker was only supposed to be in my team till GW 4 until a cheaper option popped up anyway since my defense a bit too expensive. the aim is to have a good 4th mid and 5th mid basically. Henderson + Ince/Davis/JWP(based on who is nailed on) sound just about perfect

      Nope. Not at all.

Same thing as having Hernandez, if not even better for Rooney/Mata. Hernandez is nearly always on the defenders shoulder, Rvp mixes it up a bit. He drops (a little) deeper, meaning Rooney can get forward as much as ever. LVG's system allows both strikers to get forward (centrally) because of wingbacks and mata filling the hole/area off the striker.

It shouldn't make much difference to mata either. If anything it'll boost his assist potential.

If anyone is playing UFPL I emailed them asking about the 5 transfers you get in GWs 1, 2 and 3 as the wording is ambiguous in the rules. It talks about the August transfer window when in fact the transfers carry over, if unused, right the way through to the end of GW3 just before the start of GW4 which is actually in September.

Would you keep Bojan as a non playing fwd in case he either starts firing or is required to come in to cover injuries, or sell him for a cheaper fwd to raise a bit of money?

With Siggy nailed as a 6.0 mid option all you need is to hit one of the 5.0-7.0 midfielder range to have a nice team and the big three up front.

yes. I think he'll be tired and merts will come back in with chambers probably playing the champions league second leg again. although the injury to gibbs does complicate things. I can't honestly believe he's going to play as a DM above Flamini?

When Ramirez fit and IF you'll sign a new winger will one of JWP/Davis still start? planning on having both for 2/3 weeks(and benchin one) and then swapping the one that looks like their losing gametime for Henderson. for that to work i need to know that atleast one of the two will start though

Tadic, looked very good vs pool. Clearly can settle into the pl, has great potential and fixtures.

I think he'll be great this season even though I don't have him ATM, believe I would, if I could (Mid: Mata, Sterling, Fabregas, Ramsey). Will give mata a couple more GWs, then will do him to Tadic, if he's on form and mata isn't.

Quick survey. From the following GW38 rankings, find the first one where you'd be happy to finish and give me you happiness rating (on a scale from 1 to 100 naturally). Don't say which one.

    b) 1,000
