Scout Report – Federico Fernandez

Swansea continued their shrewd business during the current transfer window by snapping up Argentine centre-back Federico Fernandez from Napoli. The 25-year-old, who is the club’s eighth summer signing, expressed his delight at being given an opportunity to play in the English top-flight.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League – it is the best in the world – and I’m grateful to Swansea for giving me this opportunity. I saw a team that holds the ball and plays very good football. It caught my attention. I can identify myself with the Swansea style – I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too.”

THE HISTORY

Fernandez began his career at Argentina’s Primera Division side Estudiantes. He played twice in their run to the Copa Sudamericana final in 2008 – aged just 18 – but only cemented his place in the side when manager Alejandro Sabella, now head coach of the national team, arrived. Fernandez scored his first goal against Lanús in 2009, but was an unused substitute as Estudiantes won the Copa Libertadores final that year and signed with Napoli for €3million the following December.

Having netted two goals for Napoli, both headers, to add to his four goals at Estudiantes, the defender eventually struggled for playing time, and was loaned out to Getafe for the second half of last season, where he played 14 times and scored once.

Fernandez won the first of 26 international caps in 2011, but was not named in the Copa America squad later that year. Nevertheless, he became one of Argentina’s key centre-halves during the 2014 World Cup, playing 990 minutes in qualifying and starting every fixture until the quarter-final, when he lost his place to Martín Demichelis despite La Albiceleste winning every match with him in the side.

THE PROSPECTS

Fernandez is an imposing centre-back who reads the game well and can dominate both aerially and on the deck. He has professed his admiration for Swansea’s silky, pass-dependent style of football but although the stats suggest he is unlikely to light up Fantasy football with goals or assists, he could be an interesting route into a defence with excellent upcoming fixtures.

Immediate investment in Swansea clean sheets could be a wise move. A tough trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 aside, Garry Monk’s men have a generous opening fixture list with which to capitalise on their shock win at Old Trafford. In the next two weeks they have back-to-back home fixtures against Burnley and West Brom, and showdowns against Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle and Leicester complete the schedule until November.

Fernandez comes in at a price of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League, matching Swansea’s most expensive defenders Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams. The Argentine’s arrival effectively kills off any hope of Kyle Bartley (4.0) making the team, ruling the latter out of contention as a budget backline contender. The move also spells disaster for owners of Jordi Amat (4.5), who looks set to lose his place as Monk attempts to improve upon a dubious defensive record that has seen the Swans register just two clean sheets in his 15 Premier League matches at the helm.

It also leaves an interesting prospect in Neil Taylor (4.5), who would now appear the cheapest route into the back line. The left-back’s pitch time could be worth monitoring, though; after being booked against United, he was replaced by Dwight Tiendalli (4.5) after just 52 minutes as Adnan Januzaj tormented him on the flank. Frustratingly, Monk has confirmed the club are still awaiting international clearance for Fernandez ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley but the fixtures certainly suggest that, once available, he could be worth considering if his impact helps address the Swans defensive woes.

Some of the bitterness on here regarding Balotelli is very silly, but after all the predictions by certain members before the season kicked off where Liverpool were ruled out of the top 4 and United were a shoe in, it's clear there is a lot of United bias from popular members of this site.

Balotelli is a good signing. This is irrefutable. Especially when it's 16 mill with 2 mill add ins and Liverpool sell Borini for 14 mill. Rodgers and Mario have spoken on the phone this week and they both wanted this to happen. The lad has matured since getting into a serious relationship. And Rodgers loves resurrecting fading stars. As someone else posted (I've cheekily copied and pasted):

£40m = Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho and Ballotelli
    £42m = Ozil
    £43m = Fellaini + Zaha
    £50m = Torres
    £56m = Soldado + Lamela

To mock this signing is basically childish and bitter. Liverpool are still pursuing Falcao as well, is he also 'rubbish' if Liverpool sign him? Clearly different players, but Balotelli isn't overcoming a serious injury and will 'only' earn 95k per week

The signing may still not happen to to Balotelli's agent being the infamous 'Agent of Evil', but bloody hell, let's all celebrate the fact that this entertaining talent is back in the premier league.

And oh yeah, Rojo is great and will be a great defender for United.

Some great points. Not sure I agree about Liverpool still going for Falcao if this goes through, though.

Crucially, will it be worth getting Balotelli when he's likely to get sent off every other week? Brilliant talent but still an unreliable nutter.

Useless and selective, what about Ramsey costing less than £5m or Walcott for £10m. Or Liverpool spending £20m+ on Lallana and Markovic. Spurs got Ade and Eriksen cheap. Yaya relatively cheap for City too

One can have doubts about the transfer without it being sourced out of bitterness or whatever. 16m is still a lot of money and trust me his wages will be sky high. When paying that much the last think I would want is question marks over a players temperment.

The advantage Liverpool have over other top 4 chasing rivals(United,Spurs,Everton) right now is that none of them have the quality and team spirit that Pool have right now imo. Chelsea, City and Arsenal will take the top 3 spots comfortably though.
But if Balo, Sturridge and Sterling can stay fit then Liverpool can push for the 4th spot but challenging for the title is out of their reach.

Absolutely, It's a great bit of business. Yeah he's a risk, and there's always a chance he gets sent off and hurts the team but he can play and he's still young yet so to get him for >£20mil is an absolute steal for a player who on his day is one of the top top strikers in the world.

Hopefully Rodgers can take him under his wing and get him playing; but let's be honest the Premier League is better for having him!

Everybody is expecting his points to drop if Aguero and Silva stay fit. Last season was a standout season for Toure but injuries definitely benefited his role in the team, may have to play slightly deeper this season.

I still expect him to have a great season but not as good fantasy wise, also his value makes it hard to fit him into most people desired teams.

Don't get me wrong he will still have a good season and will chip in with goals and assist just not expecting the same haul he had last year. If your team works with him in it he may be worth keeping. If you feel you need to upgrade elsewhere though there are plenty of other premium options in mid other than Yaya.

I love Yaya but just can't see a way of getting him into my team this year with the other available options

    Liverpool have sold:

    Suarez for 75M
Borini for 14M (surely he'll go now)
    Reina
    Kelly

and will possibly sell Agger, Lucas and Assaidi as well.

    Net Total: 94M

    Liverpool have bought:

    Lambert
    Balotelli
    Can
    Lallana
    Lovren
    Manquillo
    Origi
    Moreno
    Markovic

    Net Total: 117M

    Estimated Net Spend: 23M

Selling the third best player in the world is never ideal but Liverpool have always lacked depth. With the Champion's League coming soon I feel as though the club has made some good signings.

Steve Bruce...From a week or so ago, different match but the sentiment remains...

"I've come to the conclusion that whoever doesn't play [on Saturday] will play on Thursday," he announced.
Asked whether he would adopt the selection policy for the duration of the tournament, Bruce said: "Yes.
"We did it last week in Stuttgart where we played a team against Trencin on the Thursday and then totally changed the team.
"It's one way of playing the squad and it's the only way really that we can do it.

Ade has had malaria and Harry Kane was man of the match tonight, can see Ade being hauled off early very often. Tottenham also may sign a replacement (could be Bony)

Would be interesting to see what Poch would do if he had Bony as well. Dou you think he'd start playing 2 up top more.

Harry Kane could get quite a few chances this season if they don't sign another striker.

So do we think Vargas will have a negative impact on Jordon Mutch's fantasy potential? I had decided to give him a couple of more chances but if he will either risk drops/early subs or being played deeper then I'd probably rather sell.

Vargas is a wide forward as far as I know, and when Chile did their 3-5-2 thing in the World Cup he was played as one of the two strikers, who both drifted pretty wide at times.

I don't know either him or Austin particularly well, but from what I've seen of them I'd be hesitant to play either, or Remy, as the central attacking midfielder/10 in a 3-5-2. And that is the position we want Mutch to play in, I would think.

Is anybody clued up enough to fill in the blanks here? If Remy is off it would of course all be void.

the fer signing makes it messy too, but i wouldnt be too worried about mutch. there seem to be 3 spots for 5 players (him, barton, faurlin, fer and hoilett), and i'd back him to find a spot in there

Yup.. can see Faurlin and Hoillett seeing the bench more often than not. that being said cant see any of the strikers dropped. can vargas play as an attackin wing back in place of traore? or would that be suicide?

no. wing back at QPR is different to wing back at United. The wing backs won't be wingers.

Good point on Fer AB. I'd still back Mutch to start more often than not.

        Good point.

Unfortunately I'm not sure I want him if he's not given licence to go forward a lot. At least this weekend we get to watch him and then we can decide. If he just gets forward enough I'm pretty sure he will score enough to be worth 5.5m.

Remy/Austin aren't #10s. I'm sure Vargas has the technical ability to play #10, but I'd say it's very unlikely Harry would play Vargas, Remy and Austin in a 3-5-2... and he's committed to that formation.

Therefore, those 3 have 2 spots to fill. If Mutch is supplying them, he'll do well.
