Scout Report – Federico Fernandez

Swansea continued their shrewd business during the current transfer window by snapping up Argentine centre-back Federico Fernandez from Napoli. The 25-year-old, who is the club’s eighth summer signing, expressed his delight at being given an opportunity to play in the English top-flight.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League – it is the best in the world – and I’m grateful to Swansea for giving me this opportunity. I saw a team that holds the ball and plays very good football. It caught my attention. I can identify myself with the Swansea style – I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too.”

THE HISTORY

Fernandez began his career at Argentina’s Primera Division side Estudiantes. He played twice in their run to the Copa Sudamericana final in 2008 – aged just 18 – but only cemented his place in the side when manager Alejandro Sabella, now head coach of the national team, arrived. Fernandez scored his first goal against Lanús in 2009, but was an unused substitute as Estudiantes won the Copa Libertadores final that year and signed with Napoli for €3million the following December.

Having netted two goals for Napoli, both headers, to add to his four goals at Estudiantes, the defender eventually struggled for playing time, and was loaned out to Getafe for the second half of last season, where he played 14 times and scored once.

Fernandez won the first of 26 international caps in 2011, but was not named in the Copa America squad later that year. Nevertheless, he became one of Argentina’s key centre-halves during the 2014 World Cup, playing 990 minutes in qualifying and starting every fixture until the quarter-final, when he lost his place to Martín Demichelis despite La Albiceleste winning every match with him in the side.

THE PROSPECTS

Fernandez is an imposing centre-back who reads the game well and can dominate both aerially and on the deck. He has professed his admiration for Swansea’s silky, pass-dependent style of football but although the stats suggest he is unlikely to light up Fantasy football with goals or assists, he could be an interesting route into a defence with excellent upcoming fixtures.

Immediate investment in Swansea clean sheets could be a wise move. A tough trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 aside, Garry Monk’s men have a generous opening fixture list with which to capitalise on their shock win at Old Trafford. In the next two weeks they have back-to-back home fixtures against Burnley and West Brom, and showdowns against Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle and Leicester complete the schedule until November.

Fernandez comes in at a price of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League, matching Swansea’s most expensive defenders Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams. The Argentine’s arrival effectively kills off any hope of Kyle Bartley (4.0) making the team, ruling the latter out of contention as a budget backline contender. The move also spells disaster for owners of Jordi Amat (4.5), who looks set to lose his place as Monk attempts to improve upon a dubious defensive record that has seen the Swans register just two clean sheets in his 15 Premier League matches at the helm.

It also leaves an interesting prospect in Neil Taylor (4.5), who would now appear the cheapest route into the back line. The left-back’s pitch time could be worth monitoring, though; after being booked against United, he was replaced by Dwight Tiendalli (4.5) after just 52 minutes as Adnan Januzaj tormented him on the flank. Frustratingly, Monk has confirmed the club are still awaiting international clearance for Fernandez ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley but the fixtures certainly suggest that, once available, he could be worth considering if his impact helps address the Swans defensive woes.

so narrowed down my choices to...
    A) Young to Ince as my 4th mid(have davis as my benched 5th). if the punt flops then swap Davis for a 4.5 and upgrade Ince to Henderson by GW 4(i know.. i know.. planning too far ahead)
    b) Young to 4.5(Albrighton) . next week Davis to Henderson.

Young's 0.1 drop will scupper my plans as i need the cash for the upgrade to hendo. got the big 3 upfront and 3 premium mids and Terry, Debuchy in defense so the cash is important. cant save the transfer 🙂

Both sound like a lot of transfers spent on sorting out a budget enabler. I say just take the punt on Ince. Davis is a great safety net - tbh, wouldn't really mind playing him for the next ten or so matches if Ince doesn't work out.

doubt he is gonna get a start though after a few weeks. too many mids/long for 5 spots at soton. i'll be playin the 4th mid every week so not just enablers tbh 🙂

We'll see. I imagine it will be Wanyama or Cork holding, Schneiderlin or Taider linking play and Davis or JWP creating, with the first one most likely to start in each case. Then Tadic and Long flanking Pelle up top (and Ramirez on the bench).

So there's a chance JWP will beat Davis to the third midfield place, but JWP should also see some gametime on the flanks, which will allow Davis back in. In any case, unless you have your heart truly set on Henderson, I'd swap Young for a 5.5, most likely Ince, then address the position again only if its causing a problem. Wouldn't like a plan that involves more than one transfer for now, plenty is bound to come up.

Everyone here is making the point about Arsenal not needing Fabregas because of Ramsey and Ozil is weird. To win the Champions league you need top quality players to play throughout the season. Fabregas coming in would have immensely reduced the pressure on Ozil to create and made the squad stronger.

I think he has behaved with the utmost integrity, not stupidity.

If Fabregas was available before he signed Özil, then he'd have taken him back. As it happens, he has too many players for the position to be able to offer them proper opportunities. Signing Fabregas would have been a waste of resources, despite his obvious talent.

one thing arsenal have never lacked over the years is creativity..

they needed and still very much need a big strong tough tackling physical presence in the centre of the park

fabregas just isnt that type of player

Naylor is a natural LB whilst Tiendalli is a natural RB. I reckon Naylor is safe, would be silly for Monk to drop Naylor based on a shaky performance vs Man Utd away.

I have a feeling the albino scotsman Naismith will tear Arsenal apart this weekend but I'm not sure who to replace. Currently I'm leaning towards replacing Silva with Naismith.

Sigurdsson seems to be on fire, and so is Ramsey. Eriksen and Mata have decent fixtures and seem to be on dead ball duties as well as in quite forward positions which should hopefully yield assists/goals.

          Who would you replace?

          Sigurdssonn Ramsey Silva Mata Eriksen
          Costa Rooney

I wouldn't replace any of those to get Naismith in! That's a great frontline. Naismith isn't going to score every week and Martinez will likely rotate his forwards.

Thanks. As long as Barkley is injured and Europa League hasn't started I think Naismith looks quite secure. I agree Naismith probably won't score every week though.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking but I think Arsenal got off easy against CP and I can't imagine Everton being as timid as they were against Leicester in the second half vs Arsenal.

4 for goals, 2 for assists, and 1 pt for shot on goal.

i've got the #2 pick in the draft, so I think maybe I'll go Aguero, Rooney, RvP, in that order of preference.

Keeping, and playing him over Sterling this week. Even considered captaining him for a bit, but have decided against doing so for now.

Anyone watch the Tottenham game? How'd Lamela look in the last 20, heard he got the assist for the goal? Also, what's the view on Vargas in these parts?

Would it be ill advised to player Caulker against his former club this weekend when I also have Eriksen in my team?

I think Spurs will do well, but can't bring myself to bench Caulker - his replacement would be Hutton vs Newcastle if I did.
