Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City ease past Liverpool 3-1. Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to score once again, with a Pablo Zabaleta own goal denying the hosts a second clean sheet of the season.

Jovetic at the Double
The City striker proved a deadly differential in last night’s encounter with Liverpool by bagging a brace in the 3-1 win. Sold by over 24,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, Jovetic sat in less than 5% of Fantasy teams as the Reds rolled up to the Etihad but, handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko once again, he rediscovered the form that saw him net five times in pre-season and delivered a 13-point return for his owners.

Now down to 7.9 in FPL, Jovetic seems in the driving seat to retain a starting berth at home to Stoke next weekend and arguably has the platform to edge ahead of Dzeko in the pecking order. The latter was forced off with a leg problem midway through the second period, though Manuel Pellegrini was optimistic of his chances after the match:

“Edin had a kick that gave him some trouble with his leg but I don’t think it is anything important. We will see tomorrow but I think he will be okay.”

Quick-Fire Aguero Nets Again
Once again, the Argentine demonstrated that he needs little time to make an impact for City. Having netted just seven minutes into his substitute appearance at Newcastle last week, Aguero scored 23 seconds after climbing off the bench to breach the Liverpool backline and bring him onto Fantasy radars ahead of the home clash against Stoke. Granted, Manuel Pellegrini’s team sheets underline he’s clearly determined to protect Aguero as he returns to match sharpness, but if Dzeko fails to recover, the little Argentine could be let loose against the Potters.

Kolarov the fall-guy
Despite putting in a strong attacking display in the clean sheet at Newcastle, it was Aleks Kolarov who was sacrificed for Pablo Zabaleta’s return to the starting XI. Gael Clichy switched to his preferred left-back role, leaving Kolarov on the bench as an unused sub. With Bacary Sagna also now an option for Pellegrini, the full-back situation is looking complex and difficult to read. Secure investment in the City back four looks limited to Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany once again, then.

Reds Unconvincing in Etihad Loss
A late own goal by Pablo Zabaleta was all the Reds had to show for last night’s display. Coming off the back of a narrow home win over Southampton, there are signs that Liverpool may take some time to adjust to life without Luis Suarez. The late introduction of Rickie Lambert suggests the former Southampton man will be no more than Brendan Rodgers’ “Plan B” in the latter part of matches, though Raheem Sterling owners will be a little concerned that the youngster’s minutes were curtailed to allow Lambert pitch time.

In defence, Rodgers has concerns over full-backs Glen Johnson and Albert Moreno who picked up injuries. The former was forced out of the action due to a thigh problem, whilst the Spaniard picked up a sprained ankle on his debut. With a trip to Spurs up next, the Reds defence looks unlikely to chalk up their first shut-out of the season in light of last night’s display, though the schedule does improve significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

I'm weighing up whether to start Naismith vs Chelsea or Sterling v Spurs - it seems sacrilegious to have an 8.6 player on the bench but like you have a feeling Naismith might get a goal.

    Morning all,

Bit tricky this as the good performances have been spread around somewhat over the two gameweeks.

    Here's my team:

    Guzan
    Cahill Azpilicueta Debuchy
    Hazard Sanchez Ramsey Sigurdsson Young
    Rooney Jovetic

    Krul Bojan Bruce Moore

I have two FTs and nothing in the bank.

I've got a bit of an idea of what to do, but wonder what the collective wisdom would say. Suggestions?

Downgrade Young to 4.5 to leave funds for Bojain upgrade
IMO you also have a bit too much money in defence. Not sure Azpi will start very game. Fixtures are not great

Working on the principle that Chelsea defence is fixture proof, and I'm sure of one or both playing. Mourinho loves Azpilicueta.

Transferring Young was what I was thinking. But perhaps for a 5.0 who might get some points. My current candidates are JWP, Rodwell and Elmohamady.

When he started the last game up front, Giroud's out for three months and the next opponents are Leicester?

There is logic in getting rid if he's not match fit, not scoring and not getting pitchtime, but who would I get instead?

I'm reading that ADM could be fielded either in the hole in the 3412 system or as forward in a 433. In both the cases, there could be no room for Mata.

I still have Mata and will hold on him up to the international break.

Personally, I think that dropping Mata for ADM won't be the solution of all LVG's problems. They lack a solid defense. Therefore, buying another #10 rather than improving the back line won't change the team performance so much. If LVG bought ADM to field him along with the other team stars (Roo, RvP, Mata), then the signing could make sense. Otherwise, I would have spent this money to buy a decent CB.

    My thoughts on nxt week:

    Defence:

Westham wont score VS Southampton (Yoshida - he's great at the mo)

Tottenham haven't set the world alight in my view - only played weakish teams so far (Lovren)

Man U wont concede vs Burnley (Jones)

    Midfield:

Mata coz of fixture - Siggy solid - Ramsey coz of fixture - Fab seems solid

    Forwards:

Rooney coz of fixture - Costa a must have - Naismith he WILL penetrate chelseal and sneek one in.

Go on... shoot me down 😛

Lovren - because Liverpool has the world alight.

Naismith - because if he can manage one legitimate shot (= offside fouls excluded) against Koscielny-less Arsenal with Monreal as LB, sure he's going to torment Chelsea.

      Defense:
Yoshida surely to be superseded by Gardos. Southampton should be solid regardless.
      Liverpool have a fragile defense.
Man U defender holders can only hope.

      Mids.
      Agree Mata.
      Siggy Solid.
Ramsey has been poor besides goals but should dominate.
Fab Solid but too defensive, I have him but feeling edgy.

      Forwards:
      Rooney Must Have.
Costa has looked decent but against two promoted teams isn't too much of an indicator.
      Naismith- Yeah Nah.

I agree on Yoshida; he has not been playing well and Southampton fans don't seem to rate him (going of forum chat), Gardos is a straight replacement and looks good to make his debut against West Ham.

Agree on liverpool having a fragile defence...hmmm just think Lovren should be playing like he has a point to prove and due for a goal with his good record... Spurs defence was a shambles last season IMO - not convinced as yet...again mainly due to the teams they've played so far aren't much of an indicator... May i ask who you have in def for nxt week?

      Not interested in Clyne?
Strong side with Begovic being the weakest point.

Fonte will be a more consistent goal threat. 0.5 ITB, Myhill > Krul and Begovic > Elliott later?

Stoke have good games. Begovic to Krul at most.

Can any of you more experienced player help me?
Will Giroud go down in price again before another Free Transfer is available?
If so how much? Is it worth taking a hit to get him out now??

Anyone know the deal with Jovetic being listed as protected on TotalFPL?

Makes no difference. TFPL and FISO not to be trusted. FPL do the price changes, not the sites.

why the big hurry to get aguero in? yeah he's scored in each game without playing much but it's still only 6 pts per game for 12m, he wont be worth having till he's starting & that could be a few more games yet.

I think he might start v Stoke (especially if Dzeko has a knock) and run riot; I would be scared of not having him this weekend.

fair enough but we dont know the seriousness of dzeko's injury, it could be just a bit of bruising & he'll be fine, its the big hurry to get him in i'm questioning

    Krul Mannone
    Taylor Hutton Dummett Clyne Rose
Sterling Ramsey Hazard Sigurdsson Mahrez (or other 5m mid)
    Aguero RVP Naismith / Chamakh

Clyne. Mainly because of more attacking.

Thinking of taking a massive punt and captain rivière i know he hasn't done much yet but palace could be his game, is west ham can score 3 vs them then Newcastle will go crazy.

    What do you think?

A huge punt, but he has a history of scoring his goals in big bundles rather than evenly distributed over longer periods. And yes, Palace seems to be in a huge fecking crisis atm.
