The Digest – Gameweek 2

We take out final glance back at Gameweek 2 this lunchtime. City’s forgotten forward and Tottenham’s form under the new man in charge come under discussion, whilst we also look at the need to afford our players the chance to find their feet before pressing the “transfer out” button.

The Player

Stevan Jovetic’s double at home to Liverpool brings the City forward into focus after last night’s win over the Merseysiders. There were concerns surrounding the Montenegro man’s pitch time as Sergio Aguero edged towards full fitness but he was once again handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko and displayed the type of deadly finishing that served up 27 goals, in addition to 12 assists, over his final two years in Italy with Fiorentina.

Despite scoring five times in pre-season, Jovetic was largely overlooked as the campaign got underway and sat in less than 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams for the encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ side. By the time the match finished, he’d leapt onto Fantasy radars with a two-goal salvo that earned his manager’s post-match praise and, with a home clash against travel-sick Stoke up next, seems poised for major investment.

Granted, as the campaign unfolds, there’s no doubt that Jovetic will succumb to his manager’s rotational whims but right now, the situation seems in his favour. With Alvaro Negredo injured, Aguero not yet 100% and Dzeko limping off with a leg problem last night, he certainly looks a strong contender for our three-man frontlines. At a time when many of the mid-price frontmen (Emmanuel Adebayor aside) have failed to convince, Jovetic, at just 7.9 in FPL, looks a very tempting route into an attack that racked up 101 goals in its way to the title last term.

The Team

A 4-0 demolition of QPR in Mauricio Pochettino’s first home match at the Tottenham helm underlined the Fantasy potential on offer at the north London club. The Argentine’s impact has been immediate since rolling up to the Lane and his high pressing approach is already reaping reward, offering Fantasy managers prospects right across the pitch.

Whilst the second half of last season saw Christian Eriksen as the sole option in the Spurs midfield, Pochettino’s arrival looks to have furthered our options in the centre of the park. Nacer Chadli managed a single goal last season and has already bettered that tally with a brace against Harry Redknapp’s side – priced at just 6.0 in FPL, the Belgian looks a real mid-price alternative if he can nail down a starting berth in the attacking midfield three. Erik Lamela’s pair of assists suggests he, too, could be set for a turnaround in fortunes, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be the pick of the mid-price forwards if he kicks on from his goal and assist against the R’s.

At the back, Spurs have been quick to hint at the resilience that helped Southampton earn 15 shut-outs under Pellegrini in 2013/14. Back-to-back goals from Eric Dier has ensured the summer signing earns most of the Fantasy attention as his ownership climbs past 10%, though it’s yet to be seen just where he stands in the pecking order once Pochettino has a fully-fit quota of defenders to choose from. Jan Vertonghen is a pricier option but if his manager’s magic touch can unlock the goal threat that saw him net five times in his debut season, the Belgian could be another Tottenham alternative arriving on our radars shortly.

The Talking Point

Jovetic’s double against Liverpool merely underlines the need to afford our squads a little more patience as the season gets up and running. For some, weeks of careful planning and preparation were thrown to one side after Gameweek 1, as more than 152,000 wildcards were wielded after just a single round of action.

After their win over Newcastle, City were poised for three home matches in four, yet Jovetic, as their form forward (and the only one with a full pre-season behind him), was cast aside by over 24,000 Fantasy managers after blanking at St James’ Park and suffered a drop in price. At such a favourable cost, the scramble is now on for his signature ahead of the Stoke clash, with over 76,000 already transferring him in.

In midfield, many lost patience with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard – two proven Premier League big-hitters. Offloaded by 94,000 FPL owners last week, Mata subsequently notched his seventh goal in eight league outings in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Hazard, meanwhile, was sold by nearly 50,000 managers ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester – bearing in mind the Belgian had scored 10 of his 14 strikes at the Bridge last season, there was something of an inevitability about his goal against The Foxes.

With player prices appearing to take longer to change in this season’s FPL game so far, there have been fewer fluctuations than ever in the market – essentially, this is allowing us the chance to stick to our guns and follow through on our long-term planning. Granted, while following the bandwagons, such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, can pay off handsomely, reining in our knee-jerk reactions and maintaining courage in our initial convictions can prove the wisest move.

    B) Dzeko -> Jovetic (-4)

Pricing needs to be looked at. How can Balotelli be 0.5 less than Rooney?

When has he ever scored 25+ goals in the league?

I believe they price players mainly on name, rather than in the actual context of the game.

Ballo is the best, that is why !!! He never got proper game time. HE can easily score 20 goals if given game time. @@@ Why always me anyone?

Pricing isn't supposed to be based on "can score 20 goals if given game time" though.

0.5 less than Rooney. It makes no sense.

Lukaku is £9.0mill and he has done more than Balotelli has ever done so far in this league.

If Balotelli went to Everton or Spurs or a team like that, I doubt he would be priced at £10mill.

Pricing shouldn't be based on how likely a certain amount of points they will score.

It should be done within the context of the game.

                9 years, 10 months ago

Huh? That's exactly what pricing is...their best estimate of their potential returns...

If a player is likely to get more points, then he's priced higher. Simple as that.

Obviously you have to establish some method to begin with. But for new players coming into the game, prices of players already in the game should be taken into account.

If Lukaku is £9.0mill how can Balotelli be £10.0mill?

What has Balotelli done so far in this league, or in any other that has bettered Lukaku's last two seasons in the PL?

if sturridge is 11.5m balo will definitely be at least 10m.

fpl has to take into consideration that he would perform well..and he is in a liverpool team who is 2nd in epl last season and scores plenty of goals.

fpl will try to avoid giving a potential bargain if not everyone will get him into the team if balo performs as expected and then people will complain about template team again.

u can argue that both sturridge n balo are overpriced this season due to liverpool achievement..next season pricing will be a more accurate one. if they are overpriced..no worries wait for balo's price drops

Agreed. Sturridge will get assists when technically Balotelli only ever had ONE assist credited to him in his time in the PL. Balotelli is extremely selfish and had the lowest shot conversion ratio in Europe last year. Don't see much worth in him when Sterling's 8.6 or whatever. Or stump up the extra 1.5 for Sturridge.

Di maria's FPL price - given that utd finished 7th last year, and he is a midfielders, he should be 9.0 tops, right??

                    Here we go again:

Should I play WC to get Jove or Aguero? Got no FT left for GW 3 or otherwise take a -8 or just wait and pray for the Stoke match:

                    Krul (Foster)
                    Caulker Terry Williams (Clyne/Bardsley)
                    Siggy Mata Sterling Ramsey (Mutch)
                    Rooney Costa Naismith

Thanks for advice lads (getting knee-jerky I know)

Ok, so my 'digest' of the week is this, that the price changes are shaping up to make this a very interesting season. It's becoming more difficult to make money on risers as there aren't many and they don't rise as steeply as in previous years, but all too easy to lose money on fallers.

So far, TotalFPL and FISO both seem to be wildly inaccurate, although I am still very grateful to both of them, they provide an excellent idea of who is doing what in terms of price and I have no doubt they will get their calculations sorted soon to give more accurate data.

Looking at the stats thus far, we can see
                    Risers: (16)
                    GK-0
                    Defenders-7
                    Midfielders-6
                    Forwards-3

                    Fallers: (107!!!)
                    GK-2
                    Defenders-29
                    Midfielders-49
                    Forwards-27

I think that rather than jumping onto price rise bandwagons, we will see the key being getting off price fall bandwagons ASAP. I feel that many of us will end up with teams below the starting 100 million come the end of the season and this new price change mechanism might see knee jerk reactions cause less consternation to the FPL community. My own tactic to combat this will be to try and identify a handful of low cost potentials for later in the season who will then allow me to trade up my key positions, potentially I am already eyeing up a budget defence with all 7 defensive positions being sub-4.5 to allow me to splash the cash in midfield and up front.

Hope this is of interest to people and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Personally, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to get balotelli because I would rather have a player who gets involved in a game, runs, shoots from distance, takes free kicks, creates chances than have stupid Diego Costa who only has two touches all game. And yes, he scored 2 goals but that was against two promoted teams. Do you imagine he will score against City from 1 touch? Not to mention that he will surely get injured in the next month. So is Aguerro, Van Persie, sooner or later. When was balotelli injured the last time? Plus, Rodgers will set him straight and he will deliver.

You'll see. He's got nothing to do with fitness and physique. All he does is linger around the box and score lucky goals but when he is required to run for at least a half a game he can't do it. Simeone got the best of him because that's his style: an animal-like approach to the game so he actually made him run and stretch and dive and all that, but Mourinho is more like a tactical, patient kind of coach and Costa just loves to chill on the pitch, score a goal and then get subbed for more rest. Just look at him, he doesn't have that urgency in his game, that desire to run, fight, prove something. Even Inzaghi did more in order to score a goal. Not this guy.. I'm not saying he'll not score 20 goals this season, but he is so overrated.

Ha, if he gets 20 or more goals this season, then I'll be happy. I'm only interested in his FPL points!

Well, obviously, but then someone else who will work more than him will get more goals and points from assists, more minutes played due to no injuries and so on. Not to mention those who are playing in the Ultimate Fantasy Premier league, where points are given for chances created, key passes and other factors. And about the yellow card comments regarding Balotelli, note that Costa had the most fouls per game as a striker in the Spanish Primera at 2.9 🙂 And he already got a yellow in his first ever game in the Premier League.

Not yet. I wanted to see how he plays. He scored two goals in 2 games but he still hasn't convinced me. I mean, sure, he's a poacher, he's there he puts the ball in the net. But that won't work at least half of the total games, especially in the Premier League. I mean come on, look at Bojan, Barcelona grown and everything, he just didn't adapt. Pelle from Southampton, scored a bunch of goals in the Netherlands, not even one chance of goal in the first two rounds, and he played all the minutes up front almost. And it's the same with Costa for me, he only scored because Chelsea is a powerful team especially in the middle and they played the two weakest teams in the league, along with QPR. I guess we could all agree that since Aston Villa isn't what everyone thought and Hull is solid as well although rated very low in pre-season. So Costa needs to show more in order to be amongst the top three scorers in the premier league and make my team, since I'm guessing you could possibly only get three expensive strikers in a FPL team and you are hoping they will be the top three all season. I don't want the fourth 😀

Just look at it from a fixtures point-of-view.

                      Leaky Liverpool (H)
                      Sunderland (A)
                      West Brom (H)

                      Versus:

                      Stoke (H)
                      Arsenal (A)
                      Chelsea (H)

                    De Gea

                    Clyne Debuchy Caulker (wisdom, bruce)

Mata Hazard Ramsey Sterling (El Hamidi)

                    Costa Jovetic Bojan

+1.9 in bank. Do I take a 4 point hit to upgrade El Hamidi to Siggy or do I wait and use the money in the bank to try to upgrade to Aguero later.
