The Digest – Gameweek 3

We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

Keep Ramsey imo. Will Zaha just be bench fodder? seems like too good an option to waste on the bench every week, particularly at 5.4. Thats my only concern with him.

Afraid he won't. Marney is my bench fodder atm.. Going with Studge/Costa/Roon and Haz instead of Fab leaves me with a good budget defence, but a fourth cheap mid who'll have to play most games unless I occasionally go for 4 atb (not likely).

    A) mata and rooney to costa and sterling(-4) would mean 3 chelsea and pool( terry, cesc and lovren sturridge) will get terry out next week to finance a move for either aguero or silva

    or

    B) mata and sturridge for costa and sterling means i still have 1 united for QPR game

What? Why would that need a WC?

      Bego has great fixtures.
You have a chelsea defender and two defenders with attacking threat.
      Your cheap defenders play.
You have the perfect midfield with a sub who plays
You have the two template big hitter strikers.

Dzeko is the obvious next transfer out, but there's no clear good move yet, so wait. If you downgrade him then Caulker and Marney could be upgraded, but this is tinkering at the edge of your squad and there is no way you need to WC. Save it for when there are injuries and blank fixtures ruining your team.

I'm just saying, you can't base someone's conversion rate after just 3 games when 2 were against promoted sides that we don't really know about yet, and one was a 6-3. How many games have you seen with 9 goals in them in the premier league..

I'm not saying Naismith = Costa, I'm saying I don't think Costa is absolutely essential and I think owners will be disappointed if they expect at least a goal a week from him.

Hazard and Fab didn't take any shots v Burnley either. The signs are good for Costa, if you watch his runs its only a matter of time before he starts becoming more and more explosive. Champions league games are sandwiched between GW4 and GW5.
It wouldn't be a big surprise if big hitters like Costa, Aguero, Alexis, Sterling etc. were rested or rotated. Otherwise they are playing 3 games in a week just after an international break.

    Another minefield to consider.

I would take out Yaya and Nasri from that list.. Silva isn't exploding yet either.

The whole Jovetic vs Dzeko thing is a very important battle for this season methinks, we have to figure out who's the better option.

And then there's still Aguero.... People will want him in soon and will have forgotten about Falcao..

Bearing in mind Bony's fixtures to GW9 and relatively lower rotation threat, is it worth taking an extra 4 point hit to bin Jovetic instead whilst also solving the Chambers headache, i.e. which is best?

    A) Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa (4 points)

    B) Chambers, Sanchez & Jovetic -> 4.2m, Sterling & Costa (8 points)

Bony: che, SOT, sun, NEW, sto, LEI

POST TRANSFER WINDOW COMMENTS FROM A RANDOM UNITED FAN:

Sad to see Welbeck go, pretty upset as I believe there's a chance he could improve significantly in the next few years akin to other late bloomers like Costa (by simply becoming a better finisher and improving his first touch a bit). I wish we did manage to loan him out instead.

Hearing varied reports on the loan fee for Falcao. If it's £12 m then I'm pretty unhappy as one season of Falcao is definitely not close to being worth the rest of Danny Welbeck's career. If it's around £6 m then I can't complain as getting in the CL again (if we manage to do it this season) would be so beneficial.

I am convinced now that Strootman will be our next purchase in Jan - as long as he gets fit in time & doesn't look severely off pace upon return. I think he & Herrera will be an awesome duo.

I really did wish Cleverley got sold. Considering we sold Kagawa for £8m (imo underpriced), selling Cleverley for a similiar amount would have been Christmas come early.

Sad to see Kagawa go, especially for less than we bought him for. I still think he's pretty class but he was never going to get a run in his fave position whilst Rooney & Mata were in the team.

Di Maria is a crazy signing (in a good sense). I have to give Woodward at least some props for moving in so swiftly BUT I think he overpaid and could have negotiated a lower fee. I'm convinced Madrid would accept a bid of between £40-50 m if we showed a "take it or leave it" attitude. I remember reading funny reports of Madrid valuing him at 90 m Euros and Woodward valuing him at 60 m, but then immediately jumping to 80 m to get the signing done - not even making Madrid meet him in the middle. But, after overpaying 1000% on Fellaini I still think this signing was a great coup.

Rojo and Blind we have overpaid for imo but they add depth to the squad to allow LVG to continue with 3-5-2 - that's the price of buying after the world cup I guess.

Very happy to have Shaw join us. We paid a hefty amount but I think he could be well worth it by the end of his career. Only 19 and is already a very good PL LB imo + easily has the potential to be the best LB in the world (although other young LB's will be ofc competing him for that, including the one from Wolfsburg). Though now we're playing with wing backs, Shaw will only do great if we start to pass much faster than we do - so that Shaw can run onto balls before crossing, rather than receiving it whilst stationary and then having to take on the opposition's right back.

My top 3 wish list for January/next summer's transfer window: Strootman, Coleman and....

an unidentified striker (RVP is very close to the end imo, I want a striker who is ideally younger than 27 and has a fair bit of CL knock out stage experience and strong scoring records in a top league for at least 2 seasons - I wouldn't want us to sign Falcao permanently as it would cost a ton and the man will be 29 next year). The closest player I can think of is Higuain?

P.S I have no idea how I ended up pouring my football guts over this comment, only intended to write 2 lines about Welbeck and Falcao.

Which is why I don't understand us signing both Blind & Rojo tbh. I would have just gone for one and then spent the rest of the cash + extra to land a top CB.

For 3 CB spots we have:

Jones, Evans, Smalling, Rojo, Blind, Blackett & if we buy a top CB in Jan that makes 7 players for 3 places (when we're only in 2 competitions).

      2. Brutus619
        • 12 Years

Now that we have 5 proper CB options (excluding Blackett), I think it's not absolutely necessary to buy another strong CB. I think Jones can and should become the leader of the defence for this season.

First and foremost, I disagree about Falcao. I think he'd be a wonderful asset beyond this season. Furthermore, if we sign him we can always loan him out or include him in some sort of deal for, say, the likes of Paul Pogba since Juventus are known admirers of the Colombian or even to Real Madrid for, say, CR7. Far-fetched theories perhaps but that's the noise I'm hearing from other folks within United forums.

Sad to see Welbeck leave, yes. I posted a photo of he and Giggs many years ago - which you no doubt have seen by now since it's doing the rounds on the social media/community boards.

That said, I imagine Chicharito could very well leave permanently as well.

Di Maria is going to be a great asset going forward and I've always hoped he'd come to the PL one day - I am all the more grateful it is with United.

Aside from that, all the other signings are pretty much on point. Herrera has been outstanding so far. The lad has great vision and flair even at such a young age. Blind will be able to cover a few positions nicely, Shaw should be a good player provided he gets time/gets fit - despite being 100% game ready IMO. Then again, I'm not LVG so WTF do I know? Rojo, on the other hand, is a major question mark. There's a big hold up given his rights and the PL is yet to sign-off on his transfer. It could be a few weeks until we see him on a team sheet.

Not particularly stoked on Cleverley holding things up. And I am disappointed to see Shinji go. We've always loaned out an obscene amount of players and I can't understand how Anderson survived the cull.

Back to my original point, I think Falcao is certainly worth hanging on to, particularly if his option to sign will only cost 35m, as reported.

Herrera has great flair? Not sure I've seen that, just seems like a get it and move it sort of player, I don't think he'll be involved in many goals. "Such a young age" is stretching it as well, the blokes 25!
