Spot the Differential – Gameweek 4

With many a Wildcard in play, it’s time to present you with our regular trio of left field options to tempt you off the beaten track. Our selection has value in mind, serving up a pair of Gameweek 3 scorers who look primed for back-to-back returns, plus a solid defensive option who looks to have cemented his start in a back four destined for further shut-outs.

KEVIN MIRALLAS

Whilst budget forward Steven Naismith remains Everton’s weapon of choice for Fantasy managers, Mirallas’ ownership is hovering just under 5%, and the Belgian’s underlying statistics suggest that he could be primed to emerge from his team-mate’s shadow as the Toffees roll up to West Brom this afternoon.

Despite only managing a ten minute substitute appearance in Everton’s first fixture of the season, Mirallas’ goal attempts outweigh Naismith’s at 10 to 7, placing the Belgian second in the rankings for total shots by midfielders this season, with an average of just over 19 minutes separating each of the winger’s attempts from one another. This goal threat proved effective against Chelsea last time out, with Mirallas opening his account for the season with a deft header, though with a large share of set pieces in his locker as well, it may not only be in front of goal that the 7.4 priced midfielder rewards his owners.

Today’s opponents will hold little fear for Everton, with the Baggies having conceded five goals already this campaign, including three in their last match against Swansea, and with Crystal Palace visiting Goodison Park in Gameweek 5, Roberto Martinez looks set to go out on the offensive again for at least the next couple of fixtures: Mirallas is likely to be one of the main beneficiaries.

DWIGHT GAYLE

It took less than a minute for the young striker to find the back of the net in Crystal Palace’s 3-3 draw with Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, and though that remained his only shot of the game, there’s no denying the starlet’s effectiveness when given opportunities. The Gameweek 3 goal was Gayle’s first league strike of the season in his first league start, though this was preceded by a first half hat-trick against Walsall in the Capital One Cup at the end of August.

A hamstring injury has ruled Marouane Chamakh out of Palace’s clash with Burnley this weekend, ensuring that Gayle should keep his place at the summit of Neil Warnock’s attack despite being a doubt with an ankle problem earlier this week. Another goal scoring performance from the 5.4 priced frontman today could well cement his starting spot for weeks to come, and with Leicester and Hull on the Eagles’ agenda in their next four fixtures, Gayle is certainly worth considering for managers eyeing up options in the budget forward department.

PHIL BARDSLEY

After Geoff Cameron underwent surgery earlier this week, Bardsley now looks nailed-on for Stoke at right back for the near future. The Potters have only conceded two goals over their first three fixtures, and will be looking to carry through the momentum from their shock 1-0 victory against Man City two weeks ago when they welcome Leicester to the Brittania today.

Despite being available for 0.6 less than team-mate Ryan Shawcross, Bardsley’s ownership remains at just 0.6%, making the former Sunderland man the least owned regular starter in Stoke’s backline.

Mark Hughes’ men face three home matches in their next five (LEI, NEW, SWA), whilst trips to QPR – who have only scored once so far this season – and Sunderland won’t daunt them too much either; Bardsley will be optimistic of adding to last Gameweek’s clean sheet and perhaps supplementing that with more attacking returns following his assist in Gameweek 2.

If you have any actual evidence for the claim that sterling will not start this evening, please step right up. But if you're basing it on the nonsense that is bib-theory, I'd prefer not to hear it.

Sterling is perhaps the best player at BR's disposal for the game today. He's in terrific form, he is key to liverpool's offensive creativity, and he's surely going to play tonight. If I was a Liverpool fan, I'd think it better that he be rested against Ludogorets if anything, if that's the issue.

I'll be prepared to admit defeat if for whatever reason he doesn't play tonight. But this is the premier league. There are no easy games, and you don't rest your best players if they are fit, so it remains logically sound that he should play.

    Agree or disagree?

The last time Sterling was subject to the bib theory 2 seasons ago he scored and got 3bps. I'm sticking and hoping for more of the same. Yes he will be rested at some stage, but the CL opponents are hardly Real Madrid

        De Gea

that's it guys, will do Mutch-->Zaha and bench Mata. If Ramsey does not play at least the bench is good and I just don't wanna bench Siggy:

    Currently
    Mata Ramsey Sterling Siggy (Mutch)

    -->
    Ramsey Sterling Zaha Siggy (Mata)

Sit tight and hope for the best, wishing all a nice GW, cheers

    TEAM A:
    Begovic
    Bertrand - Janmaat - Moreno
    Sterling - Fabregas - Ramsey - Zaha
    Rooney - Naismith - Costa

    McCarthy Siggy N Taylor Moore
    2.2 ITB

    TEAM B:
    Begovic
Bertrand - Janmaat - Van Aanholt
    Sterling - Fabregas - Siggy - Chadli
    Rooney - Costa - Aguero

    McCarthy Boyd - N Taylor - Moore
    0.4 ITB

B looks better, but A is safer and gives me a lot more options (Rooney > Aguero - Ramsey > Di Maria etc.) + it will only take me 4 changes to change Team A to B.

      A, but do this:

Was thinking to save the money for Aguero, but Rooney > Balo might be an option - could go Clyne without a problem, but Bertrand has got better stats + he's a differential

Falcao has scored 2 in 3 with Monaco this season. I would stick with Rooney until next week & evaluate Falcao this week as he might not get much game time. Watch Balo until he starts scoring.

I don't see why not, and if he doesn't play you'll have a good backup. But I think a half hour of costa makes for a good chance at a goal. I'm a City fan, but I'm not sure how the arsenal game will go and I think Aguero is a differential anyways. Play it safe with the in form player and the popular choice in costa. I took a hit for sterling and I don't trust Rooney still so I'm inclined to go with Sterling myself. I'd pick between Rooney and costa if I were you. All of them could do well though. I wouldn't have any regrets if I picked the wrong one of those 3. All great choices for you

Been reading some articles on Boyd and wether he's a likely starter. He was bought for his creativity and league experience, and equals the club's record fee paid for Steven Fletcher (£3m). Dyche has been full of praise for him and stated that he always wanted the player and had he known Boyd was available earlier, he would have completed the deal before deadline day.

Whilst other new signings Keane and Chalobah aren't certain to start due to a lack of training, Boyd has spent a longer time training and seems the only likely to feature against Palace. Dyche added:

“The two young lads have only just got in so obviously I'll be thinking a little bit more flexibility with them.
“But Boyd is a mature player and has been around for 10 days now so he's got a real feel about how we operate and what we do.”

Sounds like Boyd might make his debut today and seems a viable option as our fifth midfielder considering he's only 4.4 mil.

Cesc, maybe a low scoring game week and he's guaranteed a start, at home, playing well.

Guys could you explain why you have Fabregas? In my view he is very much overpriced.

    1) Subject to rotation unlike Hazard
    2) Not on penalties
    3) Have not performed well for the last few years
    4) Not a great goalscorer anyway

1 is wrong, 2 - neither are Ramsey, Silva, Eriksen ... 3) wrong - especially considering last season whilst being played all over the place 4) his assist potential is enough
