The Technical Area – Assessing Ramsey’s Villa Performance

A change of tactics from Arsene Wenger helped Arsenal sweep aside Villa last weekend and recover from a midweek humbling at Dortmund. The Gunners boss benched Alexis Sanchez and switched from his new 4-1-4-1 formation to last year’s 4-2-3-1 system, which crucially allowed Mesut Ozil to move to the role in “the hole” behind Danny Welbeck.

Both players silenced the critics by chipping in with a goal and assist in the 3-0 victory and Ozil, who had previously been fielded on the Arsenal left, felt the switch was fundamental to his side’s success.

“We played a bit differently, in our more usual system. I think that we were a bit better, a bit more organised and in the end that led to our success.”

involvement

From a Fantasy perspective, though, one of the main points from the weekend encounter was Aaron Ramsey’s shift to the double-pivot. As the average position map from the match shows, Ramsey (number 16) was tasked with adding a little more solidity alongside Mikel Arteta (number 8) as Wenger looked to tighten up in the middle after being completely overrun by Dortmund last midweek. Ozil (number 11) and Welbeck (number 23) moved left to create space and receive the ball whenever Santi Cazorla (number 19) drifted in from the flank, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (number 15) also played fairly centrally from his starting position on the right, with the Gunners’ full-backs, Calum Chambers (number 21) and Kieran Gibbs (number 3) supplying the width from deep.

Already, over 51,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have parted company with the Welshman this week. One glance at his statistics over 78 minutes on the field, when compared to his Gameweek 1-4 averages, certainly indicates a lack of impact. In the final third of the pitch, Ramsey’s touches slumped from 41.8 to 25, as did his passes received (29.5 to 18) and successful passes (24 to 11). Ramsey’s touches in the box also dropped from a previous average of four down to two and, having now failed to score in each of his last three, the exodus is picking up pace.

When assessing Ramsey’s performance, though, it’s crucial to look at the overall picture both from a team and match perspective.

Arsenal chalked up a massive 72.5% possession at Villa Park last weekend – up on their Gameweek 1-4 average of 61.6% – though it’s somewhat telling that their team average for touches in the final third dropped significantly, down from a previous of 274.5 to 212 on Saturday.

Furthermore, their Gameweek 1-4 average for touches in the box also slipped from 28.5 to 21 against Paul Lambert’s side, whilst the Gunners fired an effort every 10.3 minutes last weekend compared to a far quicker pace of 5.8 minutes per attempt beforehand.

Essentially, then, after scoring three times in six minutes during the first period, Wenger’s side were happy to keep ball and never really needed to extend themselves as an attacking force thereafter. With a 3-0 advantage after 36 minutes, the Villa Park encounter became an exercise in possession for the visitors – it seems more likely that they attacked less in comparison to previous matches because they simply didn’t need to. Saturday was the first time this term where Arsenal went in at the break with an advantage – and a substantial one at that – and it was therefore unnecessary to bomb forward in the final third to the same extent as in previous Gameweeks.

In terms of involvement, for example, Ramsey’s minutes per touch (0.8) remained exactly the same, whilst the upturn in possession meant his minutes per pass received actually quickened from 1.1 to 0.9 before he was withdrawn with 12 minutes remaining, suggesting he was far from a peripheral figure.

Indeed, given the drop in team stats, then, Ramsey’s attacking numbers, when compared to those of his team-mates, can be looked upon in a different light. His 25 touches in the final third mirrored Welbeck’s and was just one fewer than Ozil managed over 93 minutes. He also received the same number of passes in the final third as Ozil (18), and while he was somewhat sloppy in possession in the final third, with a 73.3% accuracy down from 80% beforehand, he still produced a couple of key passes – joint-top for the Gunners along with Welbeck and Ozil. The Welshman also managed two attempts on goal – again, the equal of Ozil and a tally bettered only by Welbeck.

Certainly, Ramsey’s stats are worth monitoring – a three-match goal drought, for example, looks the main concern here as opposed to Saturday’s showing. Delving into the weekend numbers, however, suggests that, relative to his team-mates, Ramsey still offered enough to suggest he’s far from off-form. Granted, the data is indicative of the Welshman – and his fellow Gunners – playing with the handbrake on but it’s fair to say that Wenger’s side won’t be able to coast through many matches in a similar manner this season and will, far more often than not, still be reliant on Ramsey’s well-timed runs from deep to make the difference.

I've got Ramsey, Tadic, and Pelle from that lot, but just did Naismith>Ulloa.

On this evenings highlight reel I can't say I'm disappointed to have 3 Saints, including Clyne 🙂

tadic is on pens we know now...amazing though cos he played so well but didn't do anything from open play...been the tale of his fpl season so far

We knew that before though. He's clearly the best pen taker on that team. Look at the highlights of his time at Twente to see some awesome penalties... as an example there's an all-touches video on youtube of him vs Feyenoord where he scores 2 pens and has another assist or two. Koeman learnt his lesson in that game 😉

Right, but the real story here is that they didn't really have a single player besides him who would earn a penalty who had that sort of trickery / pace / skillset. Now there is Mane, so he may actually get some in the Prem 😀

I owned Tadic for one whole gameweek before I switched him out for Pelle on my WC during the intl' break. After watching the game today, I think Tadic will come good very soon with Mane in the side instead of Long. I think that will really open up some more space for him to work as well as give him another outlet for assists. JWP out is just a cherry on top. I think I may keep Pelle for 2-5 week range and then figure out a way to switch him for Tadic.

Totally agree. I didn't watch the game but from what i've seen of Mane he should definitely help Tadic get more points from throughballs and pens. The last few weeks its seemed as if the only way Tadic would get points would be from crosses which is a real waste of his vision and trickery.

I'm pleased he performed well, but really disappointed that people seem to have caught onto Tadic now... as well as Clyne obviously

repost again (sorry work is driving me nuts and I need to think about something else), thinking of a ride on the Leicester train

    .....................Begovic
    .........Ivanovic - Clyne - Moreno
Sigurdsson - Cesc - Sterling - Di Maria
    .........Rooney - Naismith - Costa

    Gilks; Chambers, Marney, Hutton

want to save a FT next gameweek, so this week I'm thinking:

    Moreno + Naismith > Moore + Ulloa (-4)

frees up some nice money (1.7m) to work with in the future and dropping potential deadweight (Naismith rotational role and Moreno never looking like keeping a cleansheet, certainly not this weekend)

Dunno if I have chimed in this GW on your squad, but I think that hit is not wise. Do it next week for free, Naismith should get something in the derby.

I hope so, the doubt of his gametime is the only thing driving me.

perhaps my options are either save or Moreno out for Moore and nothing else..

Leicester have Palace, I think they're capable of a CS given that they're buzzing..

if I play Moreno, it's purely because I'm hoping he gets a goal or assist..Liverpool are not keeping a CS..

I would get Pelle instead, he's much more nailed long-term. Maybe I'm misunderstanding how a draft side works though.

I'd probably pick Moses because he's 100% sure to play

It's one where players are picked and allocated to a team. Hence, I can't get Pelle because another player has him. The three mentioned are free pick ups as no other player has them. I've just taken the plunge and gone for Mane. I will try and draft in Moses maybe at the weekend.

Its a cup for the 2nd stringers though. Its a great opportunity to give people game time and keep them fresh for when they're needed in the league.

For example, tonight Liverpool started Toure, Enrique, Lucas, and Lambert, gave gametime to Suso, and gave debuts to two youngsters in Rossiter and Williams.

This group will probably play the next round too. I quite like this competition as you get to see some faces you don't normally see otherwise, along with some of the youths (though Arsene Wenger sometimes takes the piss).

I'd much rather see the reserve team going far in the tournament than seeing them demolished by MK Dons anyways 😀

It depends how cluttered or legible people make their posts. A simple question and a lineup neatly presented is easy to follow and makes sense, but when there's loads of other shyte around it becomes messy.

              to messy for me.

              I prefer something like this:

              --------------------------------------------------
              Pick one:
              A) X > X
              B) X > X

              GK
              DEF DEF DEF
              MID MID MID MID
              FWD FWD FWD
              (GK // B1 B2 B3)

You don't need to take the hit.

But you like taking hits even though you don't need to its something you enjoy.

            hahaha 😆

            .....................Begovic
            .........Ivanovic - Clyne - Moreno
Sigurdsson - Cesc - Sterling - Di Maria
            .........Rooney - Naismith - Costa

            Gilks; Chambers, Marney, Hutton

want to save a FT next gameweek, so this week I was thinking:

            Moreno + Naismith > Moore + Ulloa (-4)

now I'm thinking maybe just Moreno out for Moore and giving Naismith at least one more game since it's a derby and could easily be high scoring (just doubts over his game time, at least in the future)

Just a heads up to any Moreno owners who didn't watch tonights game... Jose Enrique got his first start and was absolutely top class. He won every single defensive duel and had some lovely intricate interplay with Lallana including in the buildup to Liverpool's 2nd goal. He got glowing praise from Brendan Rodgers post-match despite not being prompted about him. My clear MOTM along with Lallana fwiw.

If anyone has any other questions about Liverpool players I'm happy to help 🙂

JE was vintage today. You're right about that. He should be playing in UCL and Moreno getting rests in that for his experience, I reckon. Moreno has not done anything worthy of being dropped and needs Prem games to improve. That's what I'd do, anyway. 🙂

Yeah I can't imagine us playing with Moreno against Gareth Bale when we have a defensive workhorse as an alternative. He pretty much never gets beat 1v1, and even when he's in a footrace against someone faster than him he knows how to position his body in the path of his opponent to win the race. Quality.

He looked near his best today. People forget that he had virtually no preseason due to an unlucky injury, so his first 3-4 games were always going to be a bit slow and one-paced from him. He's slowly getting back to his best, and today we saw lots of glimpses of what made him make the team of the year last season.

With Allen out for a few more weeks, Coutinho nursing an injury, Lucas playing 120 minutes and cramping up, and Can out for another 5 weeks, I'd say its pretty much nailed on that he'll start.

It could change if Coutinho is fit though, as Brendan might look to use his counterattack on Everton again like in January, and for that Coutinho's throughballs are perfect.

He will, but you'll need to pay attention to pressers and the like.

I'd imagine Enrique will play in the big games for his solidity whilst Moreno plays against the weaker sides. Tonights game proved that Enrique is in form and a quality option and will be in Brendan's thoughts every time he makes selections in any case.

Is it worth taking hit this week to upgrade defence for the future? Likely to need all FT's in the next few weeks so was thinking doing this now

    Chester, Ferdinand to Chambers, PVA

Chambers is likely to rise once Arsenals fixtures improve and then won't be able to afford, looking to play PVA next 2 and bench Chambers, my other defenders are Lovren, Clyne, Hutton, but the aim is to sort my defence outgoing forwards but is it worth it?

Honestly, I don't usually think it is a good idea to hit for defense, but in this case I think it definitely is. You're right with the international break coming up and all these other league games coming in hot and heavy you will be well happy to see those two in your team instead of dead weight.

I wouldn't take a hit for a defender, normally. If it's for a 5th defender you're not going to play then save the points. If you can do Chester to Chambers for free then go for it.

Someone here last week took a hit for a defender and then benched him! Madness!
If I am planning to take a hit it's usually someone I'd consider captaining that week. Be a scrooge when it comes to spending points, so that if you need to cover injuries later, you haven't lost so much ground.

I can't see it. If / when they get so much as two injuries to their starting xi the drop off is incredible. They don't have the squad for it I don't think. Unless they endure a full season without losing any of their important players, which seems unlikely to me.

Thats what happened last year, however I think its slightly different this year, apart from if Pelle were to get injured. He's the focal point up top and is so difficult for CB's to deal with.

They've got alternatives on the wings in Mane, Long, Tadic, Isgrove; in midfield: JWP, Davis, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Cork; and defense is much deeper now that they've bought Gardos and Toby. Last season they failed because Yoshida and especially Hoiveld were their replacements, but now they have better backup there. Forster is also miles better than Boruc too.

I laughed in preseason when people had them down to get relegated. I predicted them to finish 7th or 8th, with Everton potentially making way due to the EL stretching them too far. Certainly looks that way right now....

They are CERTAINLY better off than last year, and will have JRod back in at some point even as well, but a top 6 finish I think may be too ambitious. But hey, it could happen. I also disagree with your point about Pelle tremendously - I think he will be very easily shut out when they play better opponents with better defenses. I can see him really struggling in the games against bigger sides.

Oh yeah forgot about Rodriguez. Damn that is a really strong lineup if they don't get too many injuries!

The great thing about Pelle isn't that he'll get shut down, its that he occupies BOTH Cb's really well, regardless of whether he scores or not, and that creates a lot of space for Tadic and others around him. It worked perfectly against Liverpool for example when Skrtel was more interested in following Pelle away from the ball instead of covering the space behind Lovren on Clyne's goal.

Mane will play on the right wing I'd imagine. I'm guessing Tadic will be on the left with Pelle going through the middle up front.

Fabregas can still get assists from a CM position but he might be a bit expensive if all you'll get is assists with his upcoming fixtures.

He does get a lot of assists though 😉 But in both games against city and Swansea, he played deeper and then was forced to changed when that wasn't working and Chelsea were better for it.

Seriously thinking of ditching Siggurdson over tadic on my WC......I know he scored tonight but surprised to see Siggurdson had only had 8 touches in the box all season. Tadic had 20 in comparison. Can't have both as pretty difficult to ditch ADM, Fab, Sterling.

Is it worth it to have Forster and a SOT defender or just go Clyne and save spots for Tadic and Pelle if I need both?

Saints attack not good enough for a double up imo.

Doubling on their defense right now I think is fine. On their attack, however, I don't. It's not exactly as though they are putting up 3+ goals regularly. They were recently shut out to West Brom and barely got one past a 10 men Swansea side for like half the game.

Look at their individual stats individually. All of them are great picks regardless of "coverage"

Yeah, 8 goals in the last 3 league matches isn't great. Only 2 away to Arsenal in the cup as well. Underwhelming 😉

Fair point. 🙂 I'd still rather double up on their defense than attack

Arsenal's back four today was shambolic. Newcastle are arguably the worst defense in the league right now who they put four past, and the Hammer game was great - no argument here. They couldn't put more than one past ten men for 50 minutes against Swansea last weekend. They have QPR at home this weekend as we all know, but it just seems like it will be a transfer waiting to happen in the near-future to get rid of one of the two.

I have Clyne-Tadic-Pelle and I'm very happy. Would also like Forster if I could but I'm happy with Begovic. Such good attacking return on offer with Saints

I am so dreading seeing the Palace team sheet for tomorrow's game and seeing Zaha in there. Will all but guarantee he will be on the bench this weekend with Leicester rolling in. Ugh.

I haven't looked forward to a Palace game this year more than the one this weekend. It's going to be such an open shootout. Can see a 4-3 game, can't wait for it! Too bad you guys are going to get 0 points out of it, sorry in advance 😀

I already made my transfers and I am going to stick with Zaha for two more GWs for better or for worse. I will play Boyd over him for the weekend if he starts tomorrow, and honestly not too arsed about it. Think Boyd may get something at WBA.

as raw as steak tartare, according to an ESPN writer 😆

the likes of Pod, Rosicky and Diaby failed to take this opportunity to shine or at least prove to be adequate cover. Nevertheless, I'm excited by the porspect of Bellerin and Hayden, our positive notes.

Scoutify copies your team into a text version to post as a RMT. But it's not downloadable anymore.

The gadget is the FPL Analyser. http://fplanalyzer.com/ It allows you to see fixtures in your tem for future gameweeks. It also has a RMT function.

Mane was taken down for the pen. Can't recall if there was an assist on the Clyne assist - or who laid it off to him.

Don't understand all of this maneuvering for Tadic. He's another Luka Modric who makes the pass before the assist. If you want to take a chance on random luck, get the cheaper Schneiderlin and ride his price rises to increase your team value.

Check his shots & key passes per game...
His underlying stats rival or exceed many more expensive mids in the game.
With his upcoming fixtures, 7.5mil is an absolute steal.
