Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 7 – The Strong

Ahead of the weekend’s action, we take our regular look at the forthcoming fixtures and highlight those teams with the best schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks. In-form Southampton look poised to continue their impressive start, last term’s Championship winners have reason to be cheerful, whilst fortunes on Merseyside could take a turn for the better as the fixture list smiles a little more kindly.

Liverpool

“frisking

Denied the full three points in the Anfield leg of the Merseyside derby, the Reds yet again failed to convince last weekend. If they’re to maintain a credible title challenge, Brendan Rodgers needs to rapidly address shortcomings at both ends of the pitch, but he does at least have fixtures on his side for the time being. Over the next four weeks, West Brom and Hull visit Anfield whilst trips to two of the bottom three, Newcastle and QPR, also look ripe for returns.

Faith in the Liverpool defence has scarcely been lower and few would bank on Simon Mignolet whatever the fixtures. With a complete absence of resilience, most of the backline are considered dead wood for Fantasy purposes, but for those who fancy Liverpool to tighten up, Alberto Moreno has still been impressive in attack, if not in defence, and may yet reward patience. In midfield, Raheem Sterling continues to defy his team’s form and deliver results, while Steven Gerrard’s clinical set-piece delivery ensures that he stays relevant. Daniel Sturridge is hoping for a return to the fray soon, which could boost his team and may help Mario Balotelli notch his first Premier League goal for the Reds.

Leicester

“frisking

While a 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace was a sharp comedown from their previous week’s triumph over United, the defeat surely won’t dampen the Foxes’ spirits too much. Nigel Pearson’s side have some excellent fixtures on the horizon to help lift them into a well earned position in the top half of the table, beginning with a home clash against fellow promoted side Burnley this weekend. After that, the following five Gameweeks include trips to Newcastle, Swansea and Southampton as well as home fixtures with West Brom and Sunderland. Such a schedule could boost the appeal of a defence with just one shut-out to their name and also aid Leicester’s burgeoning attack.

As the ticker turns blue, Kasper Schmeichel gets a fair chance to entice Fantasy managers, while 4.0 priced Liam Moore could become a bargain. In midfield, we’re still waiting to see which – if any – budget assets emerge but Esteban Cambiasso has a proven record as a box-to-box type and has already opened his account. Cambiasso’s compatriot Leonardo Ulloa has been subject to significant interest after his high-profile heroics against United and now has the platform to add to his five goal-tally, while Jamie Vardy will be similarly hopeful of kicking on after an incredible 21-point haul in his previous home appearance.

Stoke

“frisking

Finally giving their fans a victory at the Britannia, the Potters are starting to deliver on their promise. Over the next six Gameweeks, Mark Hughes has a good-looking set of fixtures to use to his advantage and build momentum, with home matches against Swansea, West Ham and Burnley plus visits to Sunderland, Southampton and an off-key Spurs. Such fixtures could be profitable for Fantasy managers all over the pitch.

In defence, a second clean sheet brings Asmir Begovic into contention while Marc Wilson has now played every minute of the season to quash any doubts over his security. Alternatively, Marc Muniesa was given the nod over Erik Pieters last night after scoring a brace in the Capital One Cup and has huge potential if he can hold onto that place. In midfield, Victor Moses looks to be finding himself at home after his unhappy toils at Chelsea and Liverpool last season. The Nigerian seems to have struck up a partnership with evergreen Peter Crouch – both were in the points for the second match running last night and either could prove good value over these fixtures.

Southampton

“frisking

A win over QPR that, in truth, could easily have been far more comprehensive sees the Saints make a play – for the second season running – as the best value outfit across the Fantasy games. Ronald Koeman’s side have earned themselves second place in the league and have the fixtures to help strengthen their position. A visit to their old manager at Spurs will hold little fear on current form and the following five Gameweeks include three promising home matches against Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester plus visits to Hull and Aston Villa.

In a similar situation to this time last term, few Fantasy teams are now are without at least one Southampton defender and a case can easily be made for doubling up. While Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand duel for ascendency in our choice of full-back, their attacking points make goalkeeper Fraser Forster a little unappealing at the same price-point. In midfield, it seems only a matter of time before Dusan Tadic delivers on his potential, while Sadio Mane has caught the eye and comes with plenty of pedigree from the continent. Up front, Graziano Pelle now has four goals, an assist and seven bonus points and has completely overshadowed Shane Long, who may well be set for bench-warming duties as a result of Mane’s arrival.

Also Consider

Arsenal
As the injuries pile up, the fixtures mercifully begin to soften for Arsene Wenger. After this weekend’s daunting trip to Stamford Bridge, the Gunners face just two of last season’s top eight in the subsequent nine Gameweeks – while Fantasy prospects look tantalizingly good, choosing the right assets to take advantage looks a frustratingly fraught task.

Calum Chambers would be the stand-out option in defence, but for his propensity for picking up cards that sees him perched precariously on the suspension tightrope. In midfield, confirmation of Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury has sparked an exodus but a like-for-like replacement for Arsenal’s fixtures isn’t forthcoming with Theo Walcott not quite ready to return and Alexis Sanchez’s pitch time puzzlingly unassured. Danny Welbeck, on the other hand, does appear to be firmly in Wenger’s plans and he ought to prosper from these fixtures – at a price of 7.2 in FPL, the deadline-day signing looks exceptional value ahead of this run of matches.

Everton
A last-gasp goal from Phil Jagielka saved Roberto Martinez from further blushes as he toils to replicate his stellar first season in charge. Of course, the opening fixtures haven’t helped the Toffees, and once this week’s trip to Old Trafford is dispensed with, they have a long tract of easier ground to tread, with Aston Villa, Swansea and West Ham all rolling up to Goodison Park.

The Everton backline has been uncharacteristically porous this season but that hasn’t stopped Leighton Baines’ ascent up the Fantasy standings and the forthcoming schedule should strengthen his chances of points at both ends of the pitch. Injury to Kevin Mirallas could benefit Aiden McGeady, and while Steven Naismith seems to be taking a little breather, Romelu Lukaku could be set to ramp up his form – providing his manager stops fielding him on the wing, after the big Belgian was fielded on the right of a 4-3-3 against Liverpool.

Crystal Palace
Neil Warnock’s second reign at Crystal Palace has been anything but the disaster many had initially feared and the weekend win over Leicester showed a good balance between defence and attack. With three decent fixtures to come over the next four weeks, the Eagles have a chance to get more points on the board before battening down the hatches. Scott Dann has prospered the most in defence so far while Julian Speroni has also ticked over nicely between the posts. In midfield, Wilfried Zaha has lost his manager’s faith, handing Jason Puncheon the platform to pick up the points in four of his five appearances. We’ve yet to see the impact of the imminent return of Marouane Chamakh on Warnock’s frontline, but having sung Fraizer Campbell’s praises, it looks likely that Dwight Gayle will be the one to make way after Campbell took his tally to two goals in as many matches last weekend.

      Need help stuck !
      How do I get Baines from gw8 ? 2 ft 0 itb
      Bego Mccarthy
      Bertrand Clyne Moore Moreno Hutton
      Sterling Siggy Fab Adm Boyd
      Welbeck Aguero Costa

There is not a single player I want to lose , Moreno it would have to be but then I'm still 1.5 short so I'm thinking Fab>Tadic but that doesn't seem worth it

Don't get Baines. Winter WC is the time for the big defenders. Keep it cheap at the back while the promoted teams are over-performing and invest heavily in your front 7 from the big teams.

Or: those who have the big-hitter defenders can get a head start on those who only bring them in in January.... So many cheap options firing right now (eg. Downing, Ulloa, Pelle, Chadli, Tadic, etc) which makes it affordable to get Baines or Ivanovic (or both) in.

That said, Eghammers shouldn't really be looking to get Baines in if he has bertrand, clyne, and moreno in already, all of whom i expect to get good returns in the next few gw's.

If you want to find money to do so though I would start with ADM or Aguero though.

If Everton were getting cleanies he would be a shoe in but what with Europa commitments to the side Im not so sure about them. One more week to see.

Tadic would be my replacement too and I think he's the real deal. He could well match Fab himself over the coming weeks.

Tadic and Baines are slightly better and that's including gw7 where they have much tougher fixtures so from gw8 it's quite a bit better for T&B

                    Well, hello DZ.

I've been mulling over Downing or Mane all day as my Aguero enabler.

I've decided to go with Siggy instead. I almost forgot I don't own him 😳

It's the ownership issue that has swung it for me. A big haul versus. Newcastle would see me straight out of the top 10k. (41% ownership overall and 60% started him last GW in the top 10k)

Sometimes safe and boring is the right thing to do. .... Agree? Thanks 🙂

Ignoring ownership, I think its a good move. Siggy is a great player and has good fixtures.

Looking at ownership, you could give yourself a big boost by picking Downing (QPR, Burnley) as well, so that would have been a good decision too. Mane might be awesome starting GW8 too.

I don't think you can lose with any of those 3 options.

Cheers, I've seen you big up Downing and I think it could work.. But as you say, you have to look at ownership and not owning Siggy could be awful this week as Newc look pants.
It's an awfully conservative move but I think it's the right one to consolodate my good start.
                        Thanks.

Yeah its the conservative move for sure. You want to keep that ranking too so I can understand. Its easy for me to big up other players though as I already own Siggy though, as well as Downing as of this week. Fwiw i'll be benching Siggy in gw8 at Stoke though, and I'd imagine a few others would too... gotta think a few gw's ahead 🙂

Still no Costa?! Not the week to bring him in I reckon...wait for more news regarding his fitness and a start.

I prefer Aguero, and Tadic looks like your best bet.

Even if he does score a few you'd think his price tag would put people off, and very few Costa owners are gonna jump ship for him as Costa is a machine

it is not very hard to accommodate both with ramsey/rooney out and the budget options like pelle, downing, welbz, chadli etc

Yeah fair enough. I have 6.8 itb incase anything drastic happens but I don't foresee myself going for him with all the cheaper and currently-higher-scoring options in attack like pelle and welbeck

Could go either way. Costa may not by that logic.

I have Ulloa and Downing which covers both, which I would recommend 😀 Sakho isn't a bad choice though.

Rooney exit plan, which would you go for? I have Clyne, so A would be double Southampton. Thanks

                      A - Aguero + Bertrand (-4)

Shame. Already up one this week, I don't see any way he go up two more until next week if he plays well again and Siggy not moving fast enough to go twice this week.

Sunday/Monday the earliest you can realistically hope for imo.

pool next three is too good to ignore so the trade off was lose baines or welbeck to fund KUN

Moreno has looked dangerous enough to compare favourably to baines

Has BEGOVIC replaced FORSTER as the 5.0 goalkeeper of choice?

                      Some facts about Stoke:
                      - 2nd fewest big chances conceded in the league (2nd to West Ham)
                      - 2nd in the league in goals conceded (only 1 more goal than Southampton)
                      - 2nd in the league in errors (1 more than Southampton)
                      - Last season they were 4th in the league at home defensively (both in goals conceded and CS's)
                      - Begovic has only had to make 8 saves so far, fewer than any starting goalkeeper

Southampton obviously have a great record themselves, but consider this:
                      - Forster costs 0.1 more than Begovic now.
                      - Forster is unlikely to get save points, and you can get his CS points for around the same price with Bertrand or Clyne, who also offer attacking returns.
                      - Having Forster limits you to only 2 of Pelle, Tadic, Clyne, Bertrand, Mane, Fonte, and Alderweireld, all of whom are great picks. Having Begovic instead enables you to have 3 of these (and there are no selection dilemma's unless you really want Moses, Crouch, and Wilson!).
                      - Shawcross is 5.6 but doesn't score much so the benefit of him over Begovic is minimal, and no other Stoke defender is 100% nailed on, with Huth looming and Muniessa impressing recently.
                      - Begovic and Forster have almost identical fixture difficulties week-by-week for most of the season, so having one or the other doesn't ruin your GK rotation if you have a particular 4.0 or 4.5 that you like.

Do you agree or disagree? Who do you think is the better choice?

Bego the best for one obvious reason

Southamptons defenders are much better value than their keeper
Stokes defenders are not better value than their keeper

Better to play Shawcross or Lovren GW7. I'm going to have to sit one on the bench as my first sub.

Stoke often win 1-0, they dont score much, so their defenders could get bonus
example: last week, 3 defenders got bonus
Soton will score more goals (2-0, 2-1, 3-0) do their def hardly get bonus if they dont score/assist

                              Stoke defenders BPS: 15
                              Southampton defender BPS: 14

                              Not much in it.

Also, Begovic has 1bps, Forster has 0. I predict Begovic will get more BPS than Forster this season due to Stoke scoring less which increases his probability of being amongst the higher bps earners, just like yesterday.

there's no 4.5M Soton def like Wilson
                        Wilson + Forster best combo

Wilson doesn't score like Clyne and Bertrand do though. For that extra outlay you could have the CS and assists/goals and the added bps for them.

exactly, southampton defenders much better, and what happens to Wilson if Huth comes back

Wilson 4.5? Also you mention all these stats for Bego but the person hes behind on most of them is Forster. And last but not least, Stokes fixtures get very bad soon. Southamptons take a dip too but not as bad as stokes

                          1. The fact that Begovic is only behind Forster makes them very interchangeable. Their stats are almost identical, give or take 1 goal.

                          2. Look at the season ticker. You couldn't be more wrong about the fixtures as they are basically identical.

                          3. Wilson isn't nailed on, because Huth is looming very large.

Also, nowhere did I say Begovic is a better keeper than Forster (because I don't think he is, but that's arguable).

What I am saying is that Begovic is a better choice in FPL, for all the reasons mentioned by myself and summed up nicely by Triggerlips.

I never said you thought he was a better keeper.and all of your poibts point towards Forster being the better FPL prospect bar the 0.1 difference. The only real factor is if you dont want to double up with clyne

Bego is better imo. Although Stoke as a team is not as defensive as Pulis' days, but their defensive unit is still solid - games against City and NEW recently are just enough evidences. Plus Bego has a history of stopping PKs, so that's an added bonus.

FPL-wise, Soton defenders offers more value - very attacking/goal threat, CS + Bonus potential. So better to go with Bego + Clyne/Berty imo.

Hey there ILF, had a decent GW with 47 points. Was expecting a high-scoring GW with more goals from the derbies and fixtures like CHE-AVL & SOt-QPR, but was not meant to be. Green arrow, nonetheless so I'm happy.

Wish that info was hidden but it isn't. FPL flaw for sure. Best way to hide it is making a last minute decision. Have done that in the last few GWs in the past in close ML's.

thx Torres at least you can see where i am coming from. In a close mini league at the end of the season who eants theirrival to know who they have bought in? especially in a money league

No point worrying about it now. It's been like that for years and won't be changing anytime soon. Really wish GW transfers were at least hidden. Team value & ITB would also help.

Should be hidden for the current GW imo Triggerlips. One way is to do two at once as often as possible. Means saving a transfer often, but at least it leaves it more guesswork than knowledge.

Things are moving away from the template team somewhat though, especially now that Ramsey and Rooney are out. There's a lot of choice in every position now... Welbeck, Pelle, Ulloa, Aguero upfront, with Downing, Chadli, Tadic, ADM, etc shaking up the pecking order in the middle which used to be Sterling-Fab-Ramsey-Siggy.

I don't mind it, but if I was ranked really highly overall or fighting for a high place in a ML then I would be annoyed by it since people shouldn't be able to see what moves you make. It makes it easier for them to adopt blocking tactics for example.

Triggerlips, if you want a solution you could probably shuffle your first XI in the "Pick team" to change the ITB value prior to making your transfer.

For example, bench a high value player like Costa in favour of Boyd or someone else to make your ITB really inflated and confusing for anyone trying to predict your transfer.

Is there any reason why that wouldn't work?

Its not ideal but at least its fair since u can also view n guess ur opponent's transfers. Also add an extra incentive to make late transfers vs earning value by making early transfers. Especially in h2h league this "flaw" really make a difference

Did Rooney -> Welbeck earlier today after long deliberation. In doing so, I opted to forego aguero and the necessary hit.

I suppose it just comes down to value for money.

I see the preface "when fit" added to almost all arguments in favour of aguero. The issue is that aguero is NEVER fully fit, nor can an owner be assured of his playing time in the same way that one could trust in someone like Suarez. At 12.1 million, that's far too much ambiguity, and too much risk.

In Welbeck I believe I have acquired a solid striker playing for a creative team with little current competition for his place, and strong upcoming fixtures. There's no doubting that his propensity to explode is lower than that of aguero, but for a price of almost 5 million less, he seems good value.

I'm not proposing that aguero won't necessarily score well, nor that he is never worth it in fpl. But the cumulative total of someone like Welbeck + 5 million worth of upgrades across the team, when I still have a number of viable captaincy options, seems justified.

That's my personal reasoning, though I understand the counterpoints. Agree or disagree?

Excellent post and I agree with you. I have been looking at bringing in Welbeck all night and will probably do so next week for GW7. I currently have Balotelli and am getting itchy to get rid of him. With the extra money I think I will upgrade a defender to Baines. Cheers

Weleck is a very good choice, he will be very popular with people doing international week wildcards, so price should be on the rise

So you think Welbeck is better valued, nothing wrong with that. But there's a reason why Kun is almost 5mil more. He's #1 striker at City, but Welbeck is not (I know he's priced as a back up at Unietd, but still). Giroud will be back, and when Wally is fit, here's another guy fighting for the top spot.

Plus I'd feel more comfortable captaining Kun, with his PK duties, and clinical touches. Welbeck is too fancy upfront for my liking, especially in 1-1 situation. Overall I agree with you, Welbeck is a quality FPL pick atm but I think your transfer is 1 week early and Kun is definitely worth the hit.

I think most weeks Costa would be the outstanding captaincy pick, so that argument isn't as valid. I think Welbeck is a better 2nd or 3rd striker option atm than Aguero is as a 1st or 2nd option. That 5m difference is massive when you consider what else you can get for it.

Fair points, certainly. I do however agree with rick in that (as it stands), I would captain Costa over aguero almost every week anyway, so the captaincy potential of aguero is not really a consideration.

As for the status of the strikers in their respective teams, it's an interesting one. While aguero is most definitely city's #1 striker, I would argue that that contributes to him being more likely to be "rested", and therefore miss games, than somebody like welbeck, who to his manager would seem slightly more expendable. Giroud will not be back for sometime yet, and Wenger will be very careful with Walcott, so I don't see either of those as particular issues, at least in the short term.

Good choice. I might look to steal some of Welbecks probable price rise and good fixtures if Ulloa doesn't perform well against Burnley and his price stalls abit. I have plenty itb to play with though so Lukaku might become a good option too.

Absolutely delighted by Chambers finally rising. Good that Rooney fell too, thats bound to catch alot of people out.

Which Dawson is that btw? I would guess its the shyte overrated one at Hull?

                            Haha, nailed it.

Hull's defense has totally gone to shreds since he arrived. Its so obvious he is the problem

Haha yeah probably. I don't think he's a good pick anyways due to fixtures after gw7 though.

Up yours Rooney. Wanted to make sure aguero didn't get injured before trade. Finished work late.....
