The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

As the disciplinary wagon rolls back into town, there’s no prize for guessing the headline-maker this week. Looking beyond United’s captain, though, there’s also been some notable additions to this week’s tightrope.

As you’ll probably have read many times since Saturday, this was Wayne Rooney’s first dismissal for Man United in over five years. Those stats are fooling nobody, though, as he’s long been susceptible to the red mist and even the best attempts at media spin would be struggling to quash memories of a similar swipe at Jordon Mutch only 10 months ago that went relatively unpunished. In short, it was coming – and will see United play without their captain for the next three league matches (EVE, wba, CHE), before he returns to the fold for the small matter of the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad.

Joining Rooney on the ban list this weekend is Swansea right-back Angel Rangel who, after picking up his first caution for throwing the ball away on the hour mark of a goalless draw at Sunderland, was given his marching orders for a fairly innocuous block on winger Will Buckley just 20 minutes later. With the sanction for two bookings just a single match, Rangel will be missing for the visit of Newcastle before returning for the trip to the Britannia.

While Jonjo Shelvey safely negotiated said Sunderland draw to remain on four yellows, he was joined by two Arsenal players after Saturday evening’s north London derby with Tottenham. First to incur the referee’s wrath and step out to the oohs of the crowd was Jack Wilshere – busy and belligerent in the early exchanges, and victim of a foul by Spurs debutant Ryan Mason a few minutes earlier, Wilshere was soon in the book for a retaliatory lunge and will be ready to start his balancing task.

The triumvirate was then completed late in the match as perhaps the least surprising card of the weekend (if you discount Alex Song’s three-minute wait earlier in the day) was delivered to Calum Chambers – this one for a foul on Aaron Lennon. Chambers has now delivered five bookings already in his fledgling Arsenal career despite only having started seven matches in all competitions – with four of those cards corresponding to his four Premier League starts, the wait for his fifth and the resulting one-match ban may not be a long one.

Finally, tidying up the naughty lists from last week, both Tyler Blackett and Mehdi Abeid have served their one-match sentences and will be available for selection as the Uniteds of Manchester and Newcastle face up to their next matches at home to Everton and away to Swansea respectively.

I've got 7.4 mil for a midfielder. Make your pick:

    A) Chadli
    B) Mane
    C) Downi
    D) Other (team linked)

not really. he reminds me so much of torres just without his speed, suits the dormund counter attack but not bayern and the way they play he likes running in behind which bayern build up is way to slow these days barca/arsenal like.

This is almost identical to mine and I am currently frantically wildcarding, so I should be saying "good to go", but I'm not convinced by Leicester's defence. Foster might be better?

The only difference I currently have is Bertrand instead of pieters (bit more money, though). I can see Southampton going on a run of boring clean sheets, but pieters is a good steady pick if you need the money...

Great points. Totally agree regarding keepers. At the start of the season I chose to pick two guaranteed starters for 9.5 (Begovic and Krul) to avoid having to make GK transfers until January. Same probably applies to the lowest budget defender, as he should be the least priority. I must admit I was thinking about selling wisdom a couple of weeks ago though!

    Wilcard week conundrum:

Rolled the dice on a wildcard to pick up Aguero and DiMaria after dropping Rooney and Ramsey. Decided to get some mid-priced midfielders to support picking up Baines, which meant I had to sell the big boys (Siggy, Sterling, Fab) which got me to top in many leagues... so here's the new one RMNT:

    Schmeichel
    Naylor, PVA, Baines
    ADM, Silva, Dyer, Puncheon
    Pelle (V), Aguero (C), Costa

    Bench: Chadli, Clyne, Chambers, Hamer

    1. Collar On or Kolarov

Also, my team value was at 103 last night and took a hit down to 102.3 and .1 ITB - which wasn't horrible since ADM, Costa and Baines are all on the rise.

I am doing almost exactly the same! Will post my updated team soon (pretty much the same as yours). Cashing in on profits from the likes of siggy, Dier and ulloa while offloading Ramsey. Feels good to "drop" in team value when transferring out players who have made you money as that's actually the only moment your profit makes any difference. Fabregas is a clever move; he will plateau now his been shifted back.

Got to say, though, I am currently still hanging on to Sterling. His stats and fixtures just look too promising. You are a brave player for dropping him.

Sterling, Fab and Siggy have started to have too many off weeks to keep their price up that high and many will start jumping off the bandwagon if there are more 2pt gameweeks IMO, which will lead to price drop. Buy low sell high.

ADM has tougher fixtures than Sterling, but Champions League could impact individual performance.

Clyne and Chadli are benched for the week because I could see a draw in that fixture.
