Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 7 – The Weak

Yesterday, we highlighted the main beneficiaries of the schedule over the next four to six Gameweeks, with a look at those teams set for promising runs of fixtures. Today we look at the flipside of the coin, as we see that United’s kind opening stretch is about to come to an end, Chelsea face a tough test to maintain their unbeaten record, while Aston Villa still have plenty to do to weather their stormy ride.

Man United

“frisking

United were well on the road to bouncing back from their Leicester humiliation, leading West Ham last weekend, when Wayne Rooney lashed out at Stewart Downing and earned himself a three-match ban. Louis van Gaal will be hoping his team can continue their progress without their captain, but in terms of fixtures, the next six Gameweeks look tough – the Red Devils face four of last season’s top five in Everton, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Beset by injuries, the Reds’ defence has been anything but solid and the upcoming fixtures will surely be the last straw for any remaining owners of David De Gea or Marcos Rojo. In contrast, the Reds’ impressive midfield cast has been a profitable source of Fantasy points. Although these fixtures present managers with a dilemma over Angel Di Maria, with Ander Herrera injured and Juan Mata far from guaranteed regular pitch time, the Argentine remains the man most likely in the middle of the park. Up top, Robin van Persie scored his second goal in as many matches last week, and whilst his owners may be minded to keep hold, new investment may be hasty, whilst Radamel Falcao’s relatively minimal impact has failed to convince he’s worthy of the hefty outlay for now.

QPR

“frisking

In spite of a relatively kind opening schedule, the R’s are stuck in the relegation zone already and Harry Redknapp has his work cut out to avoid seeing his team sink further into the mire. Over the next six Gameweeks Liverpool and Man City roll up to Loftus Road to test the Rangers, while a trip to Stamford Bridge is hardly appealing. Such fixtures lower the Fantasy stock of this team even further and investment at this point looks exceedingly unlikely.

The Hoops’ defence hasn’t really measured up to even the modest expectations, with just one shut-out and 13 goals conceded. Steven Caulker’s threat in the box has already come to fruition but looks unlikely to compensate for the goals we can expect to be conceded over this schedule, and while Rob Green has seen off the threat of Alex McCarthy, it’s fairly academic for Fantasy purposes. The set-piece delivery of veteran Niko Krancjar has caught the eye of some in recent weeks, but with these fixtures, he doesn’t look like a wise purchase. Similarly, Charlie Austin notched his second goal of the season and will be hoping to reprise his promotion-winning form, but with so many in-form budget strikers to choose from, the schedule is a persuasive deterrent.

Aston Villa

“frisking

After a fabulous opening to the season, Paul Lambert’s Lazarus-esque team have hit a wall of fixtures, losing 3-0 to both Arsenal and Chelsea. Next up, they face Man City and then Everton before the schedule once again eases up. Anyone who has retained Brad Guzan or Alan Hutton through the aforementioned matches will no doubt keep them pinned to the back of their substitutes bench but fresh investment in the defence that kept three clean sheets in their first four will surely have to wait until Gameweek 9. News of Christian Benteke’s return to action will be music to Lambert’s ears and affords Fantasy managers a nice settling-in period to assess his form before investing.

Be Wary Of…

Hull
Steve Bruce’s side did well to come back at Man City after going two goals down, with a display that demonstrates the confidence and attacking impetus instilled this season. Hull will need that for two of their next three fixtures, though, as after the home comforts of hosting Crystal Palace, they face back-to-back trips to both Arsenal and Liverpool.

The fixtures after that are a bit mixed for the Tigers until around Gameweek 15 when they embark on a very nice run. Until then, it’s a little hard to recommend the likes of Allan McGregor or Curtis Davies – certainly James Chester has become persona non grata after missing out through Bruce’s formation tinkering. In midfield, Mo Diame’s two goals have caught the eye but he will struggle to keep that pace against the upcoming opposition, while Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez may also toil, and are again victims of the current proliferation of budget talent.

Chelsea
Unbeaten in all competitions this season, Jose Mourinho’s side seem to be cruising to glory and their prime Fantasy assets are hot property. But, as they showed against Man City, even their wings can be clipped against tough opposition as Mourinho reins in his team’s attacking instincts to edge ahead in tight matches.

With that in mind, a schedule that includes Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool in the next six Gameweeks could curtail the Blues’ Fantasy potential, although home fixtures against QPR and West Brom amidst that run may compensate. In addition, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the defence could be the main beneficiaries of Mourinho’s tactics, enhancing the appeal of Branislav Ivanovic and bringing the so far under-performing Gary Cahill, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta into contention. Cesc Fabregas, on the other hand, presents a dilemma for his legion of owners, and although Diego Costa is unlikely in the extreme to leave any teams, he might find himself bereft of armbands, offering hope of differential captains to shake up the rankings.

West Brom
As Alan Irvine gradually gets to grips with the Baggies’ hot seat, his team are now unbeaten in three games in all competitions and will take great heart from thumping Burnley on Sunday. Unfortunately, the fixture list looks set to disrupt their momentum, with showdowns against Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea over the next six Gameweeks.

The excellent value of Andre Wisdom (ineligible to face Liverpool this weekend) looks set to be tested, while Craig Dawson will be relying on goal threat to prop up his points. Graham Dorrans found his feet very abruptly with a huge 16-point haul last weekend but will struggle to repeat it in the near term, while Saido Berahino’s brace has similarly caused some ears to prick up – given the schedule, anyone considering investment may be better off waiting until the storm has passed.

I think or rather hope that Liverpool drop Balo for the weekend and start Lambert. I reckon it would work out for them.

He is slow but his brain is fast. He dropped deep for Saints with JRod in behind. I think it would work with Sterling.

Captain Shortlist and Why: Any help appreciated

      A. Costa - Good Form, against Arsenal who have a injury crisis

      B. Sterling - Inconsistent form, against WBA, played badly last night

      C. Ulloa - A Differential, against Burnley, pretty good form however I don't like relying in cheap players as (C)

      D. Sigurdsson - Good form, but not as good as earlier in the season, against a weak Pardew Newcastle side

if Silva then i can calmly wait until the end of the international break and get him in for free for Eriksen as money would be no problem. tempted to do it this week for a hit and be done with it though 🙂

Costa, Sterling, ADM, Welbeck could all be captained in the right fixture so i wouldn't worry there. Always have COsta to fall back on.

Tough one i would say Fabregas even though his fixtures are worse, he keeps performing and Silva is a sick note.

Cheers mate.. was wondering if i'd backed myself into a corner with 3-5-2.. one more point on Silva vs Fabs. Silva gives me an extra captain option for easier fixtures if i get him in. Fabs will always have Costa ahead of him for captaincy in my team. is Silva really that captainable is the question

I wouldn't feel comfortable captaining him, its a toss of the coin really. Sometimes i think we can try and be too clever though, why not pick Fabregas he is consistently performing where as Silva was good GW1 and now GW6 jack all in between.

Hey Sunny! would you do Eriksen to Fabs for a hit this week or wait(and prob be priced out/make an early transfer) for next week.. will probably lead to me being benched again though 🙂

        1. Sunny 😎

I don't like Silva as an FPL prospect as he always leads to more hits in the future and he is not really a captain option as he gets most of his points through assists.

A hit to get Fabs for Erik could pay off but what are the options you have if you hold on to Eriksen and Fab rises?

Our team has gone hit crazy this week so nothing to worry about 😀

if Eriksen drops and Fabs rises i'l still manage it.. that means i'll prob have to do it early next week though.
Think i'l take one for the team and not take a hit.. team pretty good looking this week so wont ruin our chances with a hit 🙂

    Mannone - Krul

    Rafael - Moreno - Moore

    ADM - Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy

    Costa - Pelle - Dzeko

Bench: Krul - Bertrand - Boyd - Hutton

1 FT 2.0M in the bank.

    A) Keep the FT, and do Rafael + Dzeko -> Baines + Welbeck next week.
    B) Do Rafael -> Baines this week, and Dzeko -> Welbeck next week

Hey everyone could really do with some assistance. I have 0.4 in the bank and 2Ft.

For this week am looking at going 4-4-2

    Forster (McCarthy)

Lovren - Trippier - Clyne - Shawcross (Wisdom)

Fabregas - Siggurdsson - Sterling - Di Maria (Boyd)

    Falcao - Costa (Naismith)

Thoughts on Fabregas + Naismith for Welbeck + Pelle which would free up cash to upgrade Lovren to Baines after Everton have played Utd?

Or is Falcao worth holding on to. Very sceptical about 4-4-2 because too much risk on the defence 🙁

      1) You cannot do a MID + FWD to FWD + FWD
      2) Get rid of Naismith. Maybe bring in Ulloa, or Diafra Sakho if you don't have the cash for Ulloa.
      3) Play whoever you brought in instead of Trippier or Clyne (both not going to keep a clean sheet imo, analyse attacking returns and pick the one who is more dangerous)

That maybe true. It depends on the structure of your team really. I have a frontline of Costa, Aguero and Pelle but I can still afford to have Ivanovic and Baines. There is some serious value in midfield which needs to be exploited.

people here love Baines , but his scores are restricted to taking penalties .. Everton can't keep a CS to save their life .. They have Thursday Europe League to worry about , Baines' back-up Oviedo is just making a comeback from a horror injury , so Baines will continue to play Europ League Matches for now

Oviedo isn't too far away once you include the international break. So long as they don't get too many injuries squad rotation should keep most of the team fresh for the league games.

    Team looks like.

    Begovic, Hamer,
*Moreno, Clyne, van Aanholt, *Coloccini, Hutton,
di Maria, Sterling, Tadic, Sigurdsson, *Davis,
    Aguero, Costa, Diouf.

After a dismal week, I took an early hit to do Fabregas ➡ Tadic, and Rooney ➡ Aguero. Had to do the first transfer because I was 0.1 short of Diouf ➡ Ulloa.

Now, now. Even after the -4, team still has many issues. With Diouf out, must go 4-4-2, which will lead to Coloccini vs Sigurdsson. Not the ideal scenario.

So, should I just WC? Or maybe wait this week?

Some feedback will be really appreciated in such a sticky situation.

A sane person wouldn't captain those guys though. Burnley kept 3 clean sheets prior to their recent capitulation and Big Sam has been talking up the need for the Hammers to tighten up at the back.

Yeah, and yet Leic put 5 past ManU.

If Burnley still have injuries to their midf I can see Leic mauling them. This is a game they surely will target to win.

WH, well why would they change their attacking system? Sam is under pressure to play attacking football. Up against QPR, that are basically relegated already.

This is a strange old game.

Which ManU player will clean up the points though? RVP? Falcao? ADM? Mata? whoever else? Its impossible to tell, at least with City you know Aguero will be amongst the points.

Call it bias, but as a Gunner, not comfortable (c)ing Costa this week AT ALL.

And yes, early trades. Couldn't afford to lose any more on Rooney, and needed to do the other transfer to free money. That's it. Also had an idea of playing the WC this week itself in case of an emergency.

My Captain Shortlist and Why: Any help appreciated

    Good morning/afternoon/night etc

How much is wc worth for?

Already on -4 atm and looks like I definetely need/want Welbeck for gw8 so what do you think

    a) take that -4 this week and also hit for gw8

    b) face the facts and wc now to get rid of deadwood like DDG, Caulker, Ulloa (not dead wood, but for Welbeck long term) + Rooney & Ramsey

Bad thing about a) is no Baines until gw9 and bad thing for b) is Ulloa has much better fixture this week than Welbeck 🙁

I hate that I didn't wc couple of weeks ago, lost so many points + value too (and nerves).

Wonder who'll take right sided corners...might be him since our main man's out.

Same 🙂 Might even captain him.

Really regretting my transfers. Did Rooney & Moreno to Falcao & Morgan. Think I should have gone for Welbeck (have Costa & Pelle). Not sure what I was thinking. At least Welbz has Chelsea this week. Think I will cut my losses and do Falcao > Welz over the int break and reinvest thereafter

The fixtures are not being kind to me in the LAWR head to head league. I have the joint best points total (rank) but I have only won two games and lost 3. The other team with the same points has won all 5!

    Thoughts?

    DDG/Gilks
    Cahill/Chester/Duff/Clyne/Dummet
    ADM/Siggy/Sterling/Downing/Duff
    Costa/Pelle/Aguero

    On -4 hit.

Any idea on what I should do next week? I'm contemplating the idea of using my WC during the International break, I feel that I need to fix my Defence/Midfielders. Chester and DDG must go

Crazy how 1 CL game against a mediocre Turkish team, who has a depleted and much different roster than the one that qualified for CL last season, can convince everyone that Welbeck is now the hottest flavor of the day. The ultimate knee jerk pick IMO. Chelsea is going to shut Arsenal down and Welbeck will get a 2.

If your picking him up this week and bench him, then what's the point? There's much better options out there for this week.

Because maybe it's not worth the transfer down the road?

Possibly this. Wait and see from GW8 onwards. COULD return good points

Anyone "could" return good points when the fixture is favorable but my point is that nobody was even mentioning or considering him before today's game against a horrible Galatasary side. It's the classic setup. Big game....tons of people pick him up....and then the big goose egg let down. We've seen it a thousand times before.

Nearly everyone on here has been thinking of getting Welbeck in from GW8 for weeks...

This is true. No doubt the Rooney suspension came at an inconvenient time though. One GW too early.

I've seen comments on people considering getting him in for a hit, the question is, If Welbeck blanked today against Galatasary would people still be considering him?
