The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 7

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours.

There’s minimal movement at the back this time around. Having elevated budget options such as Vito Mannone and Tom Heaton last week, it’s pretty much “as you are” where keepers are concerned, though Adrian, Simon Mignolet, Wojciech Szczesny and Tim Howard are bubbling under near the basement. All four have decent fixtures to follow – Arsenal and Everton, in particular, from Gameweek 8 onwards – but none of the quartet has convinced at the back.

With the likes of Calum Chambers offering a cheap route into the Gunners backline, few will be prepared to shell out the extra budget on Szczesny, though it’s worth noting that Chambers is just one booking away from a single match ban, having been yellow carded in all four of his league starts to date.

Branislav Ivanovic, Ryan Bertrand and Leighton Baines remain our top three defenders – the Saints man justified his lofty placing with a strike in last week’s win over QPR and has the fixtures (tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI, avl) to remain there for the next few matches.

Swansea’s Neil Taylor remains in our short-term thinking – Garry Monk’s side have conceded just once in three home fixtures and welcome Newcastle and Leicester to the Liberty in the next three. We’re also monitoring Tottenham skipper Younes Kaboul further down. Granted, four matches without a shut-out is hardly enticing but the north London side approach a kind run of fixtures from Gameweek 9 onwards which could boost their points potential.

Sunderland duo Vito Mannone and Patrick van Aanholt may be looking for a third straight clean sheet at home to Stoke this weekend but the Black Cats’ schedule takes a definite turn for the worse from next week onwards, as highlighted by our newly-updated fixture rankings. The Italian’s tendency to deliver saves points should still come in handy, though – he sits a mere two points off the top of the FPL keeper standings despite keeping out opponents on just two occasions.

In midfield, though, there are a number of mid-price options shaking up the rankings as Fantasy managers look for alternatives to the stricken Aaron Ramsey. Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli fired his fourth goal of the season in the weekend north London derby and has cemented his position as the man most likely in Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking midfield three.

The likes of Stewart Downing (QPR, bur, sto, AVL in the next five), Jason Puncheon (hul, wba, SUN in the next four) and Victor Moses (sun, SWA, WHM, BUR in the next six) all have the fixtures to maintain their recent rise to form – all three remain very budget-friendly and come in under 6.0 if you’re looking to release funds to strengthen elsewhere.

Dusan Tadic retains second spot amidst a handful of the big-hitters – his dead-ball duties keeps him ahead of team-mate Sadio Mane in our thinking, though we’re keeping an eye on the latter’s displays after he impressed on his debut against QPR.

David Silva’s pair of assists for City at Hull has earned him more than 53,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners this week as those holding Ramsey assess their options. With Villa, West Ham, QPR and Swansea in the next six, his creativity looks key for the champions as Manuel Pellegrini’s side look to rack up the goals and get their title tilt back on track.

As evidenced by his display against Galatasaray last night, Alexis Sanchez will deliver when given the pitch time. It’s four goals in his last five appearances in all competitions for the Chilean now – he limped off against the Turkish side but is expected to be back in contention for the weekend trip to Stamford Bridge. Given the Gunners’ schedule, we really need one of their midfielders to step up – the imminent return of Theo Walcott can’t come quick enough for Wenger and Fantasy managers alike.

Up front, the form and upcoming fixtures of Danny Welbeck and Graziano Pelle are difficult to ignore. While Diego Costa now sits in an incredible 64% of FPL sides, both offer exceptional value in the mid-price bracket, though Sergio Aguero remains our heavy-hitter of choice for those looking for a premium-priced partner for Chelsea’s goal machine.

Edin Dzeko’s brace against Hull showed it’d be wrong to write him off. At 8.4, he’s substantially cheaper than Aguero (now up to 12.2) but Stevan Jovetic’s return to fitness once again highlights the uncertainty hanging over the Bosnian’s minutes. Goals in each of his last two keep Robin van Persie in our thinking as a result of Wayne Rooney’s suspension, though at 12.4, few are willing to shell out on the Dutchman. Mario Balotelli and Emmanuel Adebayor’s dire form ensures both suffer a drop, with the potential return of Daniel Sturridge set to shake up our rankings next time around.

That's tricky... Wilson for CS potential, as Sunderland have been toothless in attack at times, but Bertrand has the attacking potential. Probably Wilson.

Dean Marney, Dave Jones & Matt Taylor all still out, but more annoyingly, when he finally would have been given a chance to start Nathaniel Chalobah got a knock to the windpipe of all places & WON'T feature....

        Really confused about Pelle/Welbeck.
Welbeck plays for a better team, has the likes of Ozil and co behind him and has just scored a hat-trick in the Champions League but doesn't have a good scoring record.
Pelle scored 55 in 66 with Feyennord the previous 2 seasons and is in good form too.

I know, I just don't the difference between Welbeck and Ulloa is going to be great enough to justify the other moves. I think you'd be better served using any spare cash from downgrades elsewhere to upgrade Falcao (Aguero?).

Ulloa I would expect to score quite well in upcoming weeks, and a Welbeck blank this weekend is my prediction. For me Welbeck hasn't done enough in FPL to justify losing the likes of Ivan to shoehorn him in, last night doesn't change that.

Then your punt needs to score a goal more than Welbeck, imo, since you are already planning a transfer. Choose wisely?

Yeah, don't want to be stuck with a Welbeck 2 pointer plus a chance to get injured during the break. Guess I'll work something out.

I have Welbeck Aguero Costa, fwiw. Three undisputed CL frontmen at that price is something I did not think I could afford until late January.

I have Ulloa and would rather have him this week, and perhaps even in GW8 as well when he plays Newcastle. Totally worth it short-term at the very least. Both are good picks though, with Welbeck probably the safer choice long-term.

One week punts rarely work as intended. The international break might throw injuries or even new bandwagons into the mix. Just get Welbz imo.

Just on and reading Pepin's discussion about TV on the last article -- not sure I agree that things are that unaffordable. I Wild Carded before last weekend after a horrible start and had only about 101 in TV. Was still able to afford

        Heaton Gilks
        Baines Clyne Chambers Moore Wisdom
        ADM Sterling Tadic Siggy Marney
        Aguero Costa Welbeck

with a few spare pennies left over. Cesc might have been the only elite and expensive player I missed, but what is striking is how many inexpensive options are still at the top of the points tables into October.

If you had another 1m in TV your GK situation wouldn't be as bad as it is.

Doosra put it best when he called Burnley's defense a mirage.

Fair enough. Burnley are suffering from their injuries atm though so its not looking good back there.

In any case, the point about TV still stands. If you had more money your GK standards would be higher 🙂

The extra 0.5 outlay to get Begovic, Fabianski, or Forster is well worth it imo. You can't go 13 GW's with a keeper not keeping CS's.

Great looking team, TM. I guess what I meant is 'without compromising somewhere', i.e. you have 2 mid-priced midfielders and I would want Cesc in there. May not necessarily translate into points, mind you, but still on paper.

39 in 4 seasons with RM sounds impressive, but thats only 10 per season, playing with Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema... La Liga stats usually drop in the PL too, not least with Soldado and Ozil for example.

I don't expect him to turn the league on fire personally, certainly not to the extent that he'd be worth 10m in FPL

Sort of. I think that, like Lamela against QPR, Di Maria benefited from being given too much time and space by the opposition. Unlike Lamela though, I think that he's good enough to make things happen on his own - he's simply a much better player, and will get plenty of assists this season.

            • 9 Years

Yes, when you compare him to Lamela he's obviously better. But the point was that he was a red herring in FPL terms, meaning that he is overrated relative to his 10.0 price tag.

        6. Kerz
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

Sure, the QPR and Leicester performances would have inflated his stats. But, he's a world-class player with so much experience. He has good key pass, through ball, and even crossing stats to accompany his dribbling and probing stats. He'll be involved in all of United's attacks and with Falcao and RvP in front of him, and with not much defensive responsibility, I can see him replicating his stats at Madrid.

He's not essential by any means but he's a great option, imo.

So my question for you fine folk is this. Would you rather have Aguero or Welbeck and 5 mil change?

On a wildcard and 5 mil difference would allow me to upgrade Bertrand, Naylor and Hutton (bench) to Ivanovic, Baines and Chambers (bench)

I think Aguero is the best striker in the league but he burnt me many times last season. If he was a Suarez type machine who plays 90 mins week in week out it would be a no brainer. As it is I willl probably have to transfer him out in 5 to 6 weeks.

I dont actually rate Welbeck but with that midfield behind him and for a top four club he will surely get goals and i think he is great value.

So basically would you rather have

        Clyne Naylor Bertrand Hutton Wisdom
        Costa Aguero Pelle

        Or

        Clyne Baines Ivanovic Chambers Wisdom
        Costa Pelle Welbeck

        Thoughts?

        ADM

Those home games tempt me to keep him beyond GW8 but I'm also

        a) Struggling to find a window to drop him as DDG out, Chambers in are priorities from GW9

        b) no idea who to get as he seems a decent Walcott place holder. Maybe Sanchez if I can afford him
