Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 7

Our last look back at Gameweek 7 casts an eye over Newcastle’s resurgent striker, Big Sam’s in-form outfit and the contenders to Diego Costa as legitimate armband options.

The Player

After his side had failed to score in each of their first three away fixtures, Alan Pardew turned to Papiss Cisse in order to address Newcastle’s worrying lack of bite. Finally fit to start after a long-term stint on the sidelines with a broken kneecap, the Senegal striker scored twice to salvage a much-needed draw for his under-fire manager on Saturday afternoon.

In his first appearance of the campaign in Gameweek 5, Cisse climbed off the bench to also net twice in a 2-2 draw and, despite playing a mere 151 minutes, has netted all four of The Magpies’ goals in the last four rounds of fixtures. Providing he steers clear of injury, starts looks assured once again for the 5.9-priced frontman but the question is, will Cisse be able to carry on and replicate the heroics of 2011/12, when he fired 13 goals in 14 appearances, averaging 7.5 points per appearances, or will he return to the frustrating figure that mustered just 10 strikes in the subsequent two seasons?

Certainly, with Emmanuel Riviere failing to settle in at St James’ Park, Cisse looks poised to lead the line in Pardew’s 4-2-3-1 formation right now and with five decent fixtures (LEI, wba, QPR, whm, bur) in the next seven, he has the platform to continue as Pardew desperately tries to steer his troops away from the drop zone.

The Team

A convincing 2-0 win over QPR took West Ham up to seventh in the table as their new-look side continue to impress. After his team scored a mere 40 times last term, Sam Allardyce’s decision to opt for a more offensive approach and bring in Teddy Sheringham as an attacking coach is so far paying off – The Hammers have now scored 12 goals in the first seven Gameweeks, a tally bettered by only four other teams.

Fundamental to the recent turnaround has been the stunning form of Diafra Sakho. Player of the Year in the French Second Division last season after scoring 20 times for Metz, the Senegal striker has stepped up seamlessly and has now netted in each of his last five in all competitions for the Hammers. Allardyce’s switch to a midfield diamond has afforded Stewart Downing the chance to create and despite moving to a more withdrawn role against the R’s, the midfielder still served up an assist and two bonus points – climbing to seventh in the FPL midfield standings on 37 points.

The attacking approach had, until the weekend, come at a cost, though. West Ham racked up 14 shut-outs last season but had conceded in every match until keeping out the R’s on Sunday – with the aerial threat of James Tomkins earning the centre-half a second assist of the campaign, Allardyce’s side are offering us legitimate options right across the outfield classifications right now.

The Talking Point

A goal against Arsenal took Diego Costa’s tally to nine strikes in seven appearances for Chelsea last weekend. In a stunning start to life in the Premier League, the summer signing has drawn a blank just once this season – away to City – and has served up a series of consistent performances that makes him, for many, the automatic armband option in any given Gameweek.

A closer look at the bonus points distribution in those matches, however, shows that Costa – in spite of his superb record – is having his work cut out in order to benefit. Costa has found the net in clashes with Burnley, Leicester, Villa and The Gunners yet has earned a single bonus point over those four matches combined – it seems that playing in a Chelsea team where many players are favoured by the BPS is somewhat curtailing his ability to make that step up as this season’s Luis Suarez.

Whilst the Uruguayan was the standout candidate last year, the last few weeks suggest that this time around, it’s not quite so cut and dried. Sergio Aguero’s strike against Villa means he has now notched in five of his seven appearances and, crucially, despite failing to score more than once, he’s still managed to earn bonus points on every occasion he has found the net – a potentially vital factor when assessing the pair’s captaincy credentials.

There’s also Angel di Maria to consider. United’s £60m has now delivered a goal and assist in three of his last four, earning 38 points over those fixtures, with a series of Fantasy displays that harks back to Gareth Bale’s final season in the English top-flight.

Given that he now resides in over 66% of FPL sides, it’s clear that Costa will typically be the most popular armband option from one Gameweek to the next. In spite of his near-impeccable scoring record, though, the likes of Aguero or Di Maria are starting to suggest they could be worthy rivals to the Chelsea star, lending a little more weight to the armband conundrum than we perhaps previously anticipated.

    alright lads, thoughts?

1 FT, 1.9m in the bank

thinking just Moreno > Baines (leave 0.4m itb) and that's it for the week (will wait until after internationals). I just got RVP so I'm not looking to shift him yet.

    ................Begovic
    ....Clyne ᴰ Moore ᴰ Moreno
    Cesc ᴹ Sterling ᴹ ADM ᴹ Siggy
    .....Naismith ᶠ RVP ᶠ Costa

    Gilks . Marney . Hutton . Chambers

I'd be tempted to save with those. Moreno could feasibly outscorr Baines this week.

Everton play Villa at home though..I think the status of their defense has been exaggerated and is being influenced heavily by the fixtures they've had to play so far..

I really don't trust Liverpool for anything tbh and am getting sick of waiting on Moreno to give me anything more than 2 pts..

It's certainly a good move long term so if you want to do it this week I won't oppose it. Just think it's not so pressing that you can't save the ft for a bit more flexibility in future GWs. If you're going to do anything, do that - rest of that team is spot on.

How's my team for the coming weeks fellas?
No FT | 1.5 ITB | WC intact

    Bego
    Baines | Clyne | Duff
    Sterling | AdM | Hazard | Siggy
    Costa | Pelle | Welbz

Fodder: Gilks | Caulker | PvA | Marney

Looking to get Ivan, Chambers & Guzan in these next weeks. No Aguero route for me as of today, would rather tidy up my defense & be set 'til Jan.

Shame if you have to drop Tadic to do it though. His stats and fixtures are both good. Pieters can be benched until you can do it without a hit as I'm guessing you'd only be benching Duff anyway. Unless it's necessary to fund Ulloa to Welbeck.

      pre-season article on Leicester:

Riyad Mahrez (19 apps, 3 goals, 5 assists) snapped up in the January transfer window, the Algerian winger was looking like a squad filler until an injury to Lloyd Dyer afforded him the chance to nail down a regular role. Predominantly left-footed, Mahrez is versatile enough to be fielded on either flank but his slight frame suggests he could be bullied by full-backs in the Premier League –toughening up will be required over the summer but he has that certain “je ne sais quoi” that could see him become very popular with Fantasy managers if he can cement a starting berth.

Nice, would upgrade Ulloa --> Welbz. Downgrade Falcao. Get some Arsenal attack on there, & even Baines in for a cheap defender. This is of course if you don't plan getting Aguero.

If you fancy Aguero in the long term. Falcao > Aguero would be my move & I'd downgrade one of your mids to a Chadli or equivalent to fund it.

Chambers is also a good shout for your defense.

So I've been thinking about Hazard's goal at the weekend.

It really does strike me as absurd that he dosn't get an assist for the penalty just because he also ook the penalty.

If there was ever a well earned penalty assist it was his run.

If anyone else took the penalty he would have got the 3 points for the assist

Isn't this just a weird and stupid rule?

    1. Dr Dream
      • 11 Years

Odd yeah...It should be the same pts to share for each and every pen. I don't know why the taker has to lose the assist just because he takes it.

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

If he hadn't been fouled and had scored, he wouldn't have got an assist. Makes no sense giving him more points for effectively an easier task (scoring a penalty).

You can't assist yourself in open play so why would this change for a pen. He's made the goal and scored it in the same way if he beat 7 players and lashed in the top corner he wouldn't have assisted himself

      1. Coffee-Geek

I guess my point is it should be consistent. Either give an assist for penalty fouls or don't, but why change it.

After all if he misses the penalty he gets minus points.

He deserves credit for creating the penalty and credit for scoring.

Or no assist for any penalties and no minus points if he misses

        Any takers?

Player A gets pushed over in the box.

                Penalty given.

                Player B scores the penalty.

What about a player(A) kicking the ball past a defending player and running round him and scoring, no assist for that. But if said player(A) kicks the ball past a defending player and player(B) takes it off his toes and scores, an assist is awarded. Is it not a similar thing?

            Maybe.

I just don't think scoring a penalty is the same scoring in free play since you are penalised if you miss.

You are not penalised if you miss in open play.

You are more likely to have misses from open play as there are far more chances. So you couldn't have minus points for that. Players are probably penalised, or certainly used to be, with minus bps which impacts on bonus. Missing penalties should have a negative as it is a massive chance to score.

I get what your saying about the player winning the penalty and taking it but think it's fine as it is. It then gets a lot more complicated, players winning free kicks etc. next it will be, someone scores from a corner, does the person who won the corner get an assist?

Vaz Te & Wellbeck > Zamora & Aguero or...

Vaz Te & Chester > Pelle & Azpilcueta?

Got the exact money to do both.

The latter will surely accumulate the most combined points but that combo means me leaving a good 'un on the bench every week (Chadli/ADM/Siggy/Fab/Sterling/\Wellbeck/Costa or Pelle).

What would a sensible manager do?

Worth it in what way? If you need the funds, probably. But very unlikely that as a standalone transfer is going to be of benefit.

Sorry, worded my post badly. I meant is it worth shifting Pieters at the same time as Ulloa? I was thinking about funds, as Pieters seems to be dropping, and I expect that Ulloa will too once transfers start picking up again.

Someone in my work league is doing okay with this back line, and got 70 points last week.

      Hart
      Ivan, Baines, Kompany
      Fab, Sterling, ADM(c), Siggy
      Ulloa, Vardy, Naismith

      Ridiculous front 3 though.

im considering going heavy with Ivan and Baines but only for 1 maybe 2 weeks... that front line will just suffer badly.

It's my plan Wakey, but yet to pull the trigger on Mangala/Kompany. Still undecided if it's better to get Aguero or go with a power back 3 with a cheap 3rd striker who I can rotate based on fuxtures and form.

      Current team:

      Forster (Elliot)

Ivan / Baines / Clyne (Duff, Wisdom)

ADM / Sterling / Fab / Chadli (Cork)

      Welbeck / Costa / Ulloa
