The Digest – Gameweek 7

Our last look back at Gameweek 7 casts an eye over Newcastle’s resurgent striker, Big Sam’s in-form outfit and the contenders to Diego Costa as legitimate armband options.

The Player

After his side had failed to score in each of their first three away fixtures, Alan Pardew turned to Papiss Cisse in order to address Newcastle’s worrying lack of bite. Finally fit to start after a long-term stint on the sidelines with a broken kneecap, the Senegal striker scored twice to salvage a much-needed draw for his under-fire manager on Saturday afternoon.

In his first appearance of the campaign in Gameweek 5, Cisse climbed off the bench to also net twice in a 2-2 draw and, despite playing a mere 151 minutes, has netted all four of The Magpies’ goals in the last four rounds of fixtures. Providing he steers clear of injury, starts looks assured once again for the 5.9-priced frontman but the question is, will Cisse be able to carry on and replicate the heroics of 2011/12, when he fired 13 goals in 14 appearances, averaging 7.5 points per appearances, or will he return to the frustrating figure that mustered just 10 strikes in the subsequent two seasons?

Certainly, with Emmanuel Riviere failing to settle in at St James’ Park, Cisse looks poised to lead the line in Pardew’s 4-2-3-1 formation right now and with five decent fixtures (LEI, wba, QPR, whm, bur) in the next seven, he has the platform to continue as Pardew desperately tries to steer his troops away from the drop zone.

The Team

A convincing 2-0 win over QPR took West Ham up to seventh in the table as their new-look side continue to impress. After his team scored a mere 40 times last term, Sam Allardyce’s decision to opt for a more offensive approach and bring in Teddy Sheringham as an attacking coach is so far paying off – The Hammers have now scored 12 goals in the first seven Gameweeks, a tally bettered by only four other teams.

Fundamental to the recent turnaround has been the stunning form of Diafra Sakho. Player of the Year in the French Second Division last season after scoring 20 times for Metz, the Senegal striker has stepped up seamlessly and has now netted in each of his last five in all competitions for the Hammers. Allardyce’s switch to a midfield diamond has afforded Stewart Downing the chance to create and despite moving to a more withdrawn role against the R’s, the midfielder still served up an assist and two bonus points – climbing to seventh in the FPL midfield standings on 37 points.

The attacking approach had, until the weekend, come at a cost, though. West Ham racked up 14 shut-outs last season but had conceded in every match until keeping out the R’s on Sunday – with the aerial threat of James Tomkins earning the centre-half a second assist of the campaign, Allardyce’s side are offering us legitimate options right across the outfield classifications right now.

The Talking Point

A goal against Arsenal took Diego Costa’s tally to nine strikes in seven appearances for Chelsea last weekend. In a stunning start to life in the Premier League, the summer signing has drawn a blank just once this season – away to City – and has served up a series of consistent performances that makes him, for many, the automatic armband option in any given Gameweek.

A closer look at the bonus points distribution in those matches, however, shows that Costa – in spite of his superb record – is having his work cut out in order to benefit. Costa has found the net in clashes with Burnley, Leicester, Villa and The Gunners yet has earned a single bonus point over those four matches combined – it seems that playing in a Chelsea team where many players are favoured by the BPS is somewhat curtailing his ability to make that step up as this season’s Luis Suarez.

Whilst the Uruguayan was the standout candidate last year, the last few weeks suggest that this time around, it’s not quite so cut and dried. Sergio Aguero’s strike against Villa means he has now notched in five of his seven appearances and, crucially, despite failing to score more than once, he’s still managed to earn bonus points on every occasion he has found the net – a potentially vital factor when assessing the pair’s captaincy credentials.

There’s also Angel di Maria to consider. United’s £60m has now delivered a goal and assist in three of his last four, earning 38 points over those fixtures, with a series of Fantasy displays that harks back to Gareth Bale’s final season in the English top-flight.

Given that he now resides in over 66% of FPL sides, it’s clear that Costa will typically be the most popular armband option from one Gameweek to the next. In spite of his near-impeccable scoring record, though, the likes of Aguero or Di Maria are starting to suggest they could be worthy rivals to the Chelsea star, lending a little more weight to the armband conundrum than we perhaps previously anticipated.

Asked this earlier but as there is a new crowd so going to post it again

I have Baines and trying to find a way to get Aguero in. This what I've come up with -

    1) I can go with a mid of ADM, Sterling, Fab, Siggy/Chadli, Boyd and an attack of Costa, Aguero, Sakho/Naismith (£5.6m fwd)

The 3rd striker can be picked based on form and fixtures from the cheaper pool of players but means a transfer every 3-4 weeks.

    2) I could drop one of the premium mids and go with a stable 3-4-3

    3) I could just drop the idea of getting Aguero and go with Costa, Pelle, Welbeck front line

      Hey Sunny..
For me Welbeck is a premium striker disguised as a midpriced striker.. especially for the next few games.
Bit controversial but i feel the likes of Sakho/Berahino/Vardy etc offer a lot more explosiveness than the 5.5 and below mids so could be a good idea rotating em alongside Costa and Welbeck. This would allow you to upgrade Boyd to another premium mid/let you get both Siggy and Chadli.
      Are you on WC btw?

        Hi Valar 🙂

I'm not on wildcard but have to pick one of these options next week so thought I should start planning early with nothing else to do.

If I go with Costa, Welbeck and £5.5 fwd I'll be left with at most £9.5m which won't help me get a 4th premium mid. Wouldn't it be better if I go with 3 and retain Chadli and Siggy along with Pellbeck?

      Gaucho,
I have both Baines and Kun in my team. I have basically the exact team you've described with the exception of ADM (and have a Chelsea defender). Would love to figure a way to get Welbeck into my team but no one I feel can really drop at the moment.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. So your current front line is Costa Pelle Welbeck and you're considering to get Aguero as well right?

If that's the case, I would drop either one of Pelle or Welbeck to make way for Aguero. Get the funds from downgrading Fab imo.

My current front line is Costa, Falcao, Naismith. But I can turn in to any of the above 3 options by next game week.

        You're suggesting option 2 right?

I think the WAC , CAW AWC frontline is the most desirable for the next 6 or so.

Would drop any of the premiums behind to achieve that.

      Could also be wrong though.

    Begovic (McCarthy)
Clyne - Taylor - Bertrand (Janmaat, Moore)
Sterling - Fabregas - Siggy - Di Maria (Zaha)
    Aguero - Ulloa - Costa

    0.1 ITB

Any idea on what to do with 2 FT's?

Thinking Janmaat & Zaha > PVA & Boyd to free up funds.
Then I could do Ulloa > Welbeck the week after.

Is keeping Falcao and Silva over Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero

    A) Suicidal?
    B) A risky strategy?

    Kindly RMWCT:-

    Lloris Krul
    Baines Clyne Chambers Moore Duff
    Fabregas ADM Siggy Sterling Boyd
    Costa Welbeck Pelle

Was really keen on the like of Sanchez, Tadic & Aguero.
But who would you drop to fit them in??

      9 years, 8 months ago

I have 9/15 so I have to quite like it. I think Sanchez isn't really an option at the moment. Aguero is class and you would have a decision who to take out.

Be something like Fab, Sterling, Pelle to Aguero, Tadic, Chadli. Not sure it's worth it at the moment. Depends if you want differencials at this point

Almost identical to my team, and here I am looking for a reason to rip mine up and use my widlcard!

      Foster/Myhill
      Ivanovic/Clyne/Chambers/Caulker/Duff
      Fabregas/ADM/Siggy/Sterling/Mutch
      Costa/Welbeck/Pelle

I don't see Sterling as being undroppable at the moment, and he's one i'm definitely looking at shifting out, maybe for hazard.
I'm also putting cash monies aside to get Rooney back in for Pelle. Or Falcao. Aguero is too expensive i think.

I want differential. I want to time my wildcard well so that i can move away from enough of the template front 7, that everyone has, at just the right time.

0.6m between them, and thats hurting like hell this season.

I'll keep caulker until he's had his chance at set pieces against Pool this weekend.
Already got Welbeck in for this week.
Need to downgrade Ivanovic too to get in rooney again.

No wonder you got a cracking team there. Only concern would be Pelle tearing it up. Also long term could look at a replacement for Naylor as Swansea fixtures are going to get tough now.

      Thinking of saving my trade?

      Forster. Elliott
      Clyne. PvA. Wisdom. Moore. Duff
      ADM. Fabregas. Sterling. Siggy. Marney
      Costa. Aguero. Pelle

      0.2 in bank

Would love baines but would require a hit.

This. I was concerned, and still don't expect many clean sheets. But he's convinced me that he doesn't need them anymore.

The rest of the Everton defence is a no go though. Except - possibly - Seamus.

They will, just in time for the easy run & with the rest of the defense fit.
Imagine if Baines hadn't missed that penalty. That right there justifies how he scored without cleanies.
If he can carry the Everton offensive threat, like he's done, those cleanies are just an added bonus.

Concerned , yes - but banking on some improvement in defence with good run and huge upside in attack.

Yes but, over his next five, I think Baines will average a return every match, either an assist, goal or cleanie. It's a cliche but he really is a left-winger in some matches - as an example, do a compare with someone like Eriksen for Spurs - his creativity in terms of chances created is stronger, he's the same set-piece threat and, unlike Eirksen, he's on spot-kicks.

      5. Mr. Perfectionist
        • 11 Years

Not that concerned. He looks to be in good attacking form and with good fixtures coming up I can see Everton shoring up in defence.

Baines has averaged - averaged - 164 points the last 4 years - 2 of those seasons he was over 170 points. Everton have kept 13, 11, 9, and 9 CS the last 4 years, which isn't particularly impressive. Obviously as a Baines owner you hope he keeps clean sheets but it's not like Everton have to keep clean sheets for Baines to score well. Sunday was a good example - had he made his penalty, he would have been on 10 points and probably picked up BPs - despite conceding 2 goals.

I meant Baines has been involved in that many clean sheets - Everton have kept a few more but Baines was injured. The point is the same - Baines doesn't need first class defensive work to score fantasy points.

You'd have to sacrifice Ivan and one of your midfield heavy hitters to fund that. Balance of your team would suffer too much I reckon. What about Ulloa to Welbeck instead?

Thanks. Goalkeepers are my main concern at the moment, but with only 0.2itb there's not much I can do about it without losing either Baines or one of my front 7.

I am going to wait until after the international games and see if anything pressing comes up. If nothing comes up, though, then I can' t see a way to resolve the gk issue without hurting my front 7.

Who is more essential for the upcoming weeks:

          ADM or 1 of Ivan/Baines

Depends on what your replacements are. Look at it as a combo of ADM + X or Baines + Y and then compare

            But not Ivan for sure

Think you will be better equipped to decide after MUs next game.

Have ADM , but would not rush out to buy now at the price ?

Who should I try to squeeze into my team?

          A) Baines
          B) Welbeck

            Depends on what you have.

            B if only 1

Thinking of ways to upgrade either Ulloa or Pieters.

          Current team:

          Bego Hamer
          Ivan Clyne PVA Duff Moore
          Sterling Fabregas Downing Siggy Albrighton
          Costa Kun Pelle

If i want to get Baines, this would be the plan:

          This week: Save FT
Next week: Pelle PVA Begovic => Welbeck Baines Guzan (-4) => 0.1 itb

Solid plan? I'm a bit worried about the price rises tbh

Yep. Welbs has already risen once this week I think so hopefully will only rise once more before end of IB. Keep an eye on it and if he and baines have lots of transfers in, could do Pelle to Welbeck before next deadline. Both have good fixture next so shouldn't be too vital

Ok, I have to decide if this is a sound move or not?

          Pelle, Fabregas & Rafael > Sakho/Berahinho, Hazard & Baines for -4?

None of the three that I'm talking about transferring out have done anything wrong but having to look for a realistic move from the template teams, is it worth the risk?

No. Your front 8 is okay, but your defence is too heavy and you have a non player there in Taylor. I'd sort him out first along with Rafael. Why ditch Pellé with his upcoming fixture.
