Scout Scribbles – Drogba Drags Chelsea Through

Didier Drogba nets once again as Chelsea squeeze past Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup. Mario Balotelli emerges from the bench to help Liverpool get the better of Swansea, whilst a much-changed West Brom stumble out at Bournemouth.

DROGBA ON TARGET AGAIN FOR BLUES

Didier Drogba scored for the third successive match as Chelsea overcame League Two side Shrewsbury Town 2-1 to progress to the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup. Jose Mourinho chose an attacking midfield trio of Andre Schurrle, Oscar and Mohamed Salah, with Eden Hazard afforded one minute as a substitute and Cesc Fabregas handed the night off.

Post-match, Mourinho made it clear that he was disappointed by what he saw and the performances of some of his fringe players, suggesting that his team selection for the visit of QPR was straightforward…

“If players that played 90 minutes two days ago were fantastic, I expect people that have not been playing a lot to raise their level and create problems for me. I love problems of choice, but it’s easy to choose my team for Saturday.”

Significantly, Mourinho also offered an update on the likely availability of Diego Costa and Ramires…

“Normally Ramires and Diego Costa are back. Normally we will have only Remy as an injured player and Azpilicueta suspended.”

The Scout Says: Drogba has now played all but 16 minutes of Chelsea’s last three fixtures, scoring in each of them, but his pitch time against QPR on Saturday is sure to depend on the fitness of Diego Costa. Mourinho’s quote post-match, along with Drogba’s minutes, would suggest that the Spain international is set to return to the starting XI on Saturday. Once again, however, Costa’s remaining owners are likely to be made to wait until the teamsheet arrives: Mourinho seems unlikely to offer confirmation of Costa’s availability. Meanwhile, the fact that Fabregas was left out of the side last night means that the 9.7-priced midfielder avoided a booking which would have resulted in a single-match ban. Nonetheless, as we revealed yesterday, the Premier League’s top assist supplier is still perched precariously on the suspension tightrope – Fabregas will surely start against the R’s, with Gary Cahill and Oscar also likely to retain berths despite playing 90 minutes last night.

BALOTELLI INSPIRES REDS TO VICTORY

Brendan Rodgers made nine changes from Liverpool’s weekend stalemate with Hull for last night’s cup clash with Swansea. Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini were handed starts but ultimately failed to impress, with Mario Balotelli climbing off the bench to score and fellow summer signing Dejan Lovren netting late on to send the home side through 2-1.

The Scout Says: He may still have plenty to prove, but Balotelli’s strike will surely hand the forward a confidence boost ahead of Liverpool’s weekend encounter with Newcastle. With Daniel Sturridge set to make his comeback imminently, however, the Italian’s time in the first XI could be set to come to a halt if he fails to kick on from last night’s match-winning cameo performance. Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard were both given the night off last night and will be fully fresh for the trip to the North East, with the former in search for his first goal since Gameweek 5.

SWANS UNDONE BY DUBIOUS DECISION

There were five changes to Swansea’s team from the weekend, with Gylfi Sigurdsson not in the squad after being withdrawn early against Leicester with a groin niggle. With Wilfried Bony handed nine minutes from the bench, it was left to fellow striker Marvin Emnes to notch the Swans’ only goal. Centre-back Federico Fernandez was harshly sent off late on in the game, though Garry Monk has confirmed that he is confident that the decision will be overturned.

The Scout Says: Whilst Monk may be confident, there is still a chance that Fernandez could face a three-match ban after his dismissal last night, starting with this weekend’s trip to Everton. With Jordi Amat still out with a knee injury, Kyle Bartley should come in at centre back. Available in the Fantasy Premier League game for just 3.9, the former Arsenal man could be set for a tough time with fixtures against Arsenal and Man  City proceeding the Toffees encounter. Meanwhile, Sigurdsson’s owners will be confident that the midfielder will now be fit to line up in the starting XI on Saturday after being rested last night, with Monk clearly keen to avoid risking his star man ahead of their aforementioned tough schedule.

IRVINE MAKES WHOLESALE CHANGES IN BAGGIES DEFEAT

Alan Irvine made 10 changes to the side that faced Crystal Palace at the weekend, with only Craig Dawson keeping place his place in the 2-1 Capital One Cup loss to Bournemouth. With the Baggies struggling against the Championship side, Saido Berahino was handed 17 minutes as a substitute, but could do nothing to stop his side slipping to defeat and leaving the competition.

The Scout Says: Irvine’s decision to rest Berahino for last night’s cup clash will come as good news for his growing band of owners. The young forward faces Leicester and Newcastle in his next two, with both defences having only kept one clean sheet in their last seven league fixtures. Berahino then, at just 5.9, will be confident of further returns as he looks to add to his tally of five strikes in his previous four. Victor Anichebe was afforded the full 90 minutes against Bournemouth and, despite grabbing a goal and an assist in the Baggies’ fightback against Palace on Saturday, the striker now looks likely to start on the bench again against Newcastle.

MANE TO BE ASSESSED AHEAD OF CUP TIE

Ronald Koeman has revealed that Saido Mane is an injury doubt for Southampton’s cup encounter with Stoke this evening due to an ankle problem.

The Scout Says: With goals in each of his last two displays, Mane is starting to look like a legitimate alternative to Dusan Tadic in the Saints’ midfield. The winger was placed third in our ICT rankings for Gameweek 9, with four chances created and three attempts at goal indicative of his attacking threat in the win over the Potters. A rest for the 22-year-old this evening would certainly be beneficial for his owners, with the midfielder then more likely to be fit in time for the Saints trip to Hull on Saturday.

Cazorla has not looked great so far, but the latter 2 both have been OK. I would try and shift Cazorla and either Jedinak or Puncheon.

I have exactly enough for Tadic -> Sanchez, and I am convinced Sterling will do really well this GW.

This means I have to, right?

It's down to you but I would never shift Tadic whilst he is in this form. I think Sterling is a better player to shift whilst Liverpool are struggling.

Thanks for these answers, guys. I am really unsure, but pretty set on getting in Sanchez, as my forwards (Pelle, Augero and Welbeck) can't really be moved this week. Nor can Hazard, and with Sigurdsson there is really not all that to get with what I have in the bank.

So yeah, it boils down to

        Sterling -> Sanchez
        Tadic -> Sanchez

I get why Sterling is unpopular right now but I can't help feeling there is a risk of over complicating things. Over 9 weeks, he has scored 5+ points on five occasions, twice with double figures (and one of those without Sturridge). Whatever Liverpool's form and Sturridge's injuries, he is delivering decent returns.

Newcastle - Liverpool are historically games where Liverpool score a lot. And Newcastle are, after all, quite shit. Plus Sterling is at the center of things.

Am I the only one who thinks Baines (or any defender) just isn't worth 7m+ at this stage of the season?

Yes he will get a huge number of points for that price but so will a whole host of ~5m defenders. The value is only great when you compare Baines to midfielders/attackers, which is the wrong way of looking at it.

Would much rather spend that 2m extra on my attack or midfield. Particularly given how suspect Everton have looked defensively this season.

Aguero is 12.6 and has 58 points.

Baines is probably better value at 7.2m than most 5m defenders are at their price. Personally, I can't afford him without downgrading an attacker though, so I'm going without.

Good luck finding the host of defenders who score similarly to him. A player who scored double figures in 3 out of 9 games played so far and is £7m sounds pretty good to me + he doesn't take up valuable midfield or striker spots.

    (apologies for long post)
Not really happy with my team this week. Think I made a mistake in using one of my 2 FTs on Baines. Team looks like this:

    Forster
    Baines, Bertrand, C.Dawson
    Cesc, ADM, Sterling, Siggy
    Aguero, Welbeck, Pelle

    1 FT, 1.2 itb.
Thinking of either saving the second or Sterling > Haz.

If I do the transfer: In terms of points, I think the move would pay off and I'd score better this week.

If I save: Going forward though, I'd want to get Costa in and that would mean an extra transfer needed. If I save the second then next week, Welbz > Sakho, then I can easily get Costa in for WBA.

That said, that's quite far away so maybe it's better to just get Hazard and worry about Costa in 3-4 GWs time.

I don't think there's a need to get Sterling out or Hazard in. Save your FT and reassess next week.

I think you might need to worry about Costa this GW

      You could go nuclear

That's why I'm concerned about using my FT for Baines. Had exact cash for Welb > Costa and obviously Pelle > Costa. Rushed it a little bit because of price changes. Can still get Costa in for Pelle and Sterling > Mane but that'd be a 4 pointer. Worth it? Seems a bit crazy to lose any of those strikers with those fixtures/form.

The problem is the captaincy this week. If you want Costa, you have a few options but none of them ideal:

          1. A hit like the one you suggested
          2. Aguero > Costa
          3. Wildcard

WC already used, 2 is out of the question imo as I'd just need a hit to get him back in.

It's either 1 or hide behind the sofa this week. Which is better though? I think most would say A.

            A: Sterling + Pelle, Aguero (c)
            B: Mane + Costa (c), -4 pts

Basically the same team. Was going to do the Haz for Sterling move myself (also got Baines in earlier this week) but decided to save for now. Costa could be calling next week.

Yeah probably. I'm in that boat with Lamela. Gave him last chance against Newcastle, and nothing. My problem is that there's noone else in his price bracket I'm interested in (don't want any Spurs for now). He may get a reprieve, as to do the moves I want to, I have to sell Sterling which I'm not sure of.

For the NEXT FEW fixtures , Berahino or Welbeck ?

i have both and one has to go for costa

Berahino has better fixtures, but it is WBA. He is also good for team value as he seems to be continuously rising in price

Welbeck has harder fixtures (bar burnley) but plays for a better team and with the addition of ramsey + theo they might improve as well. Also looks "better" to have an arsenal attacker than a WBA attacker

please some thoughts as i cant decide

    1. Ludo

Welbeck is the better bet on an individual comparison, but the price difference swings it for Berahino, IMO.

In the same position. I think I will get rid of Beranho out of the two but I may wait till after the international break to see how things play out - i.e. if Costa is really going to play, if the international break messes him up again and, crucially, if Welbeck's recent lack of form is down to needing a week's rest.

Really can't buy into welbeck love, and I still own him, but it was more for the things you said above in that better team and returning players may give him enough chances to actually score from his shots. Also bera has relied on pens a couple of times to get points and they won't get penalty every game

      Personally I wouldn't.

Sterling has a good fixture, has been rested and bar Chelsea has good fixtures after. Plus good underlying stats and Sturridge is back soon.

Siggy to Downing I would consider though given the upcoming fixtures. But for me I'm sticking with Siggy as he is just too good value and wouldn't want to waste cash to buy him back in 3 GW's time

I don't think that is worth taking a hit. Liverpool fixtures are good and I think sterling will come through. He's been pretty steady in a fairly poor liverpool team. I think liverpool will improve and sterling will pick up.

I also think siggys value is too good to not have in your team. Imo he will out score downing long term.
