Captain Sensible – Gameweek 11

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero is the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll, having earned 34% of the votes cast so far. The City striker is in imperious form as he rolls up to face a QPR defence that has conceded more goals (20) than any other outfit – having scored in four of his five away appearances to date, he could wreak havoc on a backline that has been breached at least twice in eight of the opening ten Gameweeks.

Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is also highly fancied ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester. The big Italian has delivered returns (13, 9, 15 and 5 points) in each of his previous four appearances at St Mary’s, and up against a side with a single clean sheet this season, seems poised to continue his ascent up the Fantasy standings.

Angel Di Maria is the top-rated midfielder, earning 13% of the votes as Man United prepare for the visit of Palace. The Argentine has been somewhat hit-and-miss at Old Trafford this term – racking up 14 and 13 points against QPR and Everton respectively but blanking against West Ham and Chelsea – whilst team-mate Wayne Rooney, who has scored in all three home appearances this term, has persuaded just 2% to hand him the captaincy. Like QPR, Palace have also conceded at least twice in all but two of the first 10 rounds of fixtures, with Neil Warnock’s installation proving detrimental to their defensive prospects.

Arsenal’s in-form Alexis Sanchez has just 9% of backers despite moving up front in recent weeks. The Chilean took his tally to 11 goals in his last 13 appearances with a midweek strike against Anderlecht and has racked up three consecutive double-figure hauls ahead of a trip to Swansea – Garry Monk’s side have conceded just three times in front of their own fans, though, and will be hoping to derail the Sanchez bandwagon this Saturday.

Diego Costa is regarded as the man most likely as Chelsea travel to Liverpool on Sunday. The Blues’ star striker has collected 5% of the votes so far, whilst Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling sit around the 1% mark – a sign that few will be willing to roll the dice on the Anfield encounter.

West Ham pair Stewart Downing and Diafra Sakho have been largely overlooked for the visit of off-form Villa. Paul Lambert’s side have now conceded at least twice in each of the last six, and whilst Downing has managed just two assists in front of his own supporters this season, fit-again Sakho has scored in each of his three home starts against Liverpool, QPR and City and has averaged over eight points per appearance at Upton Park so far.

Is it madness to keep Sterling? I have to sell PVA and I don't want to take a hit (general aversion for the -4). So it's:

    A) PVA>Chambers
    B) PVA>Reid
    C) A or B + Sterling>Chadli (my other mids are Hazard-Tadic-Downing) -4
    D) Sterling>Chadli + PVA>Baines -4

If you've done like me and kept Sterling through his 0.5 drop then you might as well keep him until the great fixtures upcoming, when Sturridge is back as well.

I would have such a laugh if he scores 10+ points in the Chelsea game. Highly unlikely, but would make Barnesy proud.

I am taking a hit this or next week, in a good cause. The question is which scenario should I follow.

    (1) take a hit now for Siggy ➡ ADM move for a hit. Meaning that I'll probably need to skip Aguero, unless I decide to sacrifise Costa for the Argentinian.

    (2) leave it this week and do Clyne & Welbeck ➡ Yun & Aguero for a hit next week. Meaning that I lose Clyne and have no chance for having ADM in my team.

    Which scenario then..?
    Thanks!

Tough choices. I'd probably leave it tbh and reassess this weekend. FWIW that is what im doing at least, with similar options

2, I think Aguero is close to being a must-have with his form and fixtures (despite how City are playing as a whole).

SWA/sou/sun/EVE/lei/CPA/wba/BUR/SUN - up until the first of January...

this. he can score a hatrick against any opposition on his day. The same cannot be said about Sanchez, who has gotten his hauls in arsenals easiest fixtures, and was also very lucky with his goals against sunderland

    @Doosra... Evening!

Was wondering.. have you got any faith in Woy?

I'd say it's nailed on that Downing gets picked on his brilliant form in the middle... and if he even gets on the pitch, he'll be stuck out on the wing! 😀 Good ol' Woy.

    So...big choice to make = Mannone ->

It looks like Poch rates his three amigos as:
    1. Chadli
    2. Lamela
    3. Eriksen

No, but on top form, the other two are a street ahead (imo 😉 ). For FPL points, Chadli is king admittedly! 😎

Just a note bout naughton on the previous article.. walker is back in trainin in 2 weeks. So naughton gonna lose his spot soon enough. Though bout 3 games out of naughton looks a safe bet beyond that walker should walk back into the startin lineup

          Vorm (Lloris was suspended)
          Dier
          Fazio (who was sent off)
          Vertonghen
          B. Davies

Asked this, this morning, just after a few more opinions if you'd be so kind.

    A) Baines & Downing (Replacing Naylor and Sterling)
    or
    B) Sanchez & Sakho (Replacing Sterling and Pelle)

    Current team is

    Foster
    Chambers, Berty, Taylor
    ADM, Fab, Sterling, Siggy
    Pelle, Kun, Costa

    (McCarthy, Moore, Duff, Obertan)

    1. Think Tank
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

I prefer B. The issue I have with Downing is that there is no ready replacement for him if his form drops off/injured etc
Unless you keep money aside, it's a two transfer job to switch to someone else.

          9 years, 7 months ago

Pelle would be nice to hold on to this week, but then Sakho has a plum tie too. I'd also hope that Sanchez out-performs Sterling.

Tough call - go with your gut feeling.

  18. dodger49
    • 12 Years

OK, really need help here. Trying to get Sanchez in but don't want to give up ADM. The only other way would be to get rid of Siggy and Sterling but the only one I can bring in is Wanyama at 4.6 with Sanchez and that doesn't make much sense really.
I also feel like Ivan is a waste in the back, not worth the price tag anymore. Any suggestions welcome!

Current team, have 2 FT with WC available:
    Mannone Krul
    Duff - Bertrand - Ivan - Chambers - Wisdom
    ADM - Boyd - Siggy - Chadli - Sterling
    Costa - Aguero - Pelle

If this article is supposed to help us pick a captain, then why not include the stats for the defences which our 'potential' captains are playing.
No one cares about the big chances which Man U have conceded. Cut and paste QPR and Leicester in there which is actually relevant

It shows you the worst defences to identify strong vs weak. The teams not on that list obviously aren't doing too badly. Therefore, it is telling you.

I believe it said at the top of the article that QPR "has been breached at least twice in eight of the opening ten Gameweeks."

        Can't be that good

Gonna choose Pelle captain over Aguero.

Can't change my mind now, even though I swore i'd stick with the top of the Poll each week so its 'subjective'

I am now a proud owner of Baines. It feels absolutely great. Who else is late to the party?
