Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope doubled in size after an incident-packed Gameweek 11 brought a host of players closer to an automatic one-match ban. Whilst last week’s seven incumbents managed to steer clear of the referee’s wrath and remain on four yellows, they were joined by a further seven players, with Diego Costa the most notable new entry, after the Chelsea striker kept up his remarkable record of being booked in every away appearance in the league so far.

Having missed back-to-back road trips to Palace and Man United over Gameweeks 8-9, Costa’s caution during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool added to cards accrued at Burnley, Everton and Man City, and given his ability to rack up the yellows on his travels, a ban looks imminent.

Joining Costa on four bookings after their weekend indiscretions are Andreas Weimann, Liam Moore, Richard Dunne, Morgan Schneiderlin and Swansea defensive duo Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams, compounding Garry Monk’s worries at the back, with the likes of Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez both missing the 2-1 win over Arsenal through injury.

Costa’s caution means that the two most popular players in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game are in danger of toppling off the Tightrope. The 56%-owned Chelsea striker joins team-mate Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 53% of teams), whilst Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is another asset with big ownership sailing close to the wind.

In terms of newly banned players, Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton is set to face a two-match suspension after earning his second dismissal of the season last weekend. The right-back was sent packing during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Stoke after bringing down Victor Moses as the last man, with the Potters winger bearing down on goal. Naughton misses a trip to Hull and home clash with Everton and returns just in time for a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea, but with Kyle Walker set to return to first-team training next week, Naughton’s pitch time now looks at major risk.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s decision to appeal Naughton’s ban was rejected by the FA yesterday, after an independent regulatory commission ruled he was guilty of denying Moses a goalscoring opportunity.

Naughton is one of three players suspended for Gameweek 12 duties. QPR defender Rio Ferdinand serves the last of a three-match ban away to Newcastle for his recent Twitter comments, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke skips the second of a three-match suspension for violent conduct and misses upcoming clashes with Southampton and Burnley.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers continued his recent ill-disciplined form, and earned a sixth yellow card in just eight Premier League starts for the north London outfit, earning his owners zero points in Sunday’s away loss to Swansea.

Finally, as many as five players return from one-match suspensions in time for Gameweek 12. Both Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and West Brom’s Craig Gardner toppled off the tightrope in Gameweek 10 and, having sat out the previous round of fixtures, are back in contention for matches against Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

Chris Smalling is available for United’s trip to Arsenal, Palace midfielder and spot-kick taker Mile Jedinak is in the frame as Neil Warnock’s side host Liverpool, whilst Jonjo Shelvey returns for Swansea’s testing trip to the Etihad.

I was at Rangers vs Stuttgard in 2003 and when Rangers went 2-1 up the noise was INCREDIBLE. The stadium was literally shaking. That's the best atmosphere I have ever experienced...

I posted this during normal hours and it got some good feedback so Im posting again fro my DZ friends

Out of curiosity I just had a look at the top 10 teams. Obviously, it's early days yet and this top 10 will hardly be the same come May but it made for some interesting stuff all the same. 9/10 had Pelle. With his good run now over it will be interesting to see which way they go next. A good few had Tadic. That explosive week must have shot them up the ranks. Another one to watch what they do.

But on the whole what struck me most is how ordinary their teams look. Plenty of Lukakus, Begovics thrown in. The world no.1 has about 5/6 players I wouldnt want in my team 😆 Pretty similar to all the template teams on FFS.

To state the obvious though, these guys have done so well and a lot must be said for good captaincy choices and benching.

Guess what to take from this is

      A) Everyone makes mistakes. Don't put yourself down too much
      B) Your season is not over. Aim high. These guys are beatable 😉

It's often the way. A lot of people ditched Krul and newcastle defenders when they were leaking goals for fun. Others couldnt do that and got lucky with a string of good results. Colocini is knocking about a few of the top teams as well. The best teams dont always get the most points but over time it will right itself out.

I'd say this is a bit dismissive. Krul at 4.5 was probably worth patience. Every time Newcastle go on a bad run they are dismissed as relegation fodder, but they always seem to bounce back.

Sorry for the late reply man. Of course there are those that held on to Krul for those reasons. Im more stating it regarding those who wanted to get rid but couldnt ended up being better off than those who were in a better position and could afford to get rid. Maybe not the best comparison to make but sod it. Lol

Yup. On the same lines, had a look at one of my mini league leaders, some 145th overall. And he has none of Aguero, Costa and Baines, got a Soton defender just 2 weeks back. What he did do right was have Pelle from the go, persisted with Sanchez from gw4 and some mental captain choices.

It's about timing. They probably got players before their good runs, rather than after. Sure we all have Sanchez now but we didn't all have him 4,3 or even 2 weeks ago.

Tough one mate, but in your case, I wouldn't fancy the double up long term on Hammers.
Fab should get the axe if he's injured for sure, but then again Pelle has a very nice fixtures to a Vlaarless Villa.

It's a risky hit, w/ a very high ceiling. Take the hit mate I reckon if you'll be priced out

The question is, which is priority? To get the Everton double up (I have Coleman) or to replace Pelle with Costa? Each move for -4 by the way

          Here is my current team!

          Krul (Foster)
          Coleman; Dummet; Clyne (Wisdom, Wilson)
Fabregas, Di Maria; Sanchez; Tadić (Albrighton)
          Aguero; Sakho; Pelle

I just realised that there is another option C) as well. If I make the change from Fabregas to Chadli now, then I will be able to afford Pelle to Costa for free next week. But that would mean keeping Tadic and Clyne for the City game. Worth it?

      Baines - Dummet - Lovren
      Sanchez - Hazard - Siggy - Downing
      Costa - Aguero (C) - Austin

Pending a PVA -> Lovren transfer.
What better options are there? Liverpool have 4 nice fixtures coming up even though they're crap at the back. Please tell me there's a better option.

Well yes I do. But I can't see beyond having Sakho/ Austin in there. You don't get better value than cheap forwards in this game.

Actually I don't like Walcott.... yet

Personally, I would be willing to lose Forster for a GK with good fix til jan, to raise the cash. And take a -4

It isn't 100% necessary, but it has been several weeks of Sanchez goals now, and ManU's defence isn't great

He is not worth going 3x premium striker as he is behind aguero and Costa in the pecking order. Will trash the rest of my team. If something happens to one of Costa and aguero and he starts looking sharp I will consider it

Is Albrighton -> Isgrove really the best move for my lot this week? Seems such a waste!

To bank the extra 0.1m. Nothing worth having for 4.3m, and I can't see a transfer worth making elsewhere so better to save the 0.1m than lose the free transfer?

Probably a free transfer and 0.1m - I'll likely never start my 5th mid.

There's also the problem of who do I downgrade to afford a starting 5th mid?

Decent team. Not sure Courtois is worth the money. He might get clean sheets but other much cheaper GKs get a lot more save points when they don't. That's why I think GK is the place to go cheap.

Since it's absolutely dead on here and the pages aren't moving since God knows when, I would like to (shamefully) repost the possible solutions to the problem(s) in my team

      It's either:

      A) Saving FT and keeping Fabregas and Pelle. This would allow me to get rid of Pelle and Tadic for 2 FT's next week

      B) Taking a hit and getting Costa and Chadli in for Fabregas and Pelle this week. However, I need to make the changes soon as I'll be priced out after this week if I opt for this option. If I am priced out, I would have to get Downing instead of Chadli next week in order to accomodate Costa. However, I have Sakho already and not too keen on doubling up.

      C) Fabregas to Chadli for free this week. If I make the change from Fabregas to Chadli now, then I will be able to afford Pelle to Costa for free next week. But that would mean keeping Tadic and Clyne for the City game.

      Which option do you prefer?

Thanks a lot for your time 😉

          Fabianski
          Clyne/Baines/Ivanovic
          Fabregas/Tadic/Siggy/Alexis
          Kun/Pelle/Sakho

          Foster/Boyd/Hutton/Moore

            Hmm so 0.4 itb.

I know Costa is very tempting but remember that he and Cesc are on 4 yellows. I'd prioritize getting Hazard IF Cesc is really injured, since losing Pelle this week is very hard to take. Remember that his explosion is imminent, and how did he fare in UCL and against QPR when Costa is not playing? I rest my case.

So A is the best here. Plus when/if Cecs gets the suspension, Hazard is definite shoe in, and imagine if Costa gets a yellow too. So I repeat, A's the best for you if Cesc gets through the int break unscathed.

Pelle is not explosion imminent IMO. Horrid shooting for past weeks.

What was it like 1 SoT in last 3 GWs?

Im on the same boat, usually would choose B but learning to not take hits this year so A is good unless Fab is really injured.

Statistically, Southampton are among the best 3 attacks and Villa among the worst 3 defenses at the moment. And that is with Vlaar. 😉

Fair enough. I do hope Im wrong because Im holding the same move like you TFF.

Costa getting a yellow card this week wouls be the icing on the cake.

I personally think with the fixtures swing both team will drpp out of the top 3 attack and worst defense respectively. Soton has been up against easy opposition and Villa vicw versa

Why not make the same move next week for free when Austin has the better fixtures?

Cue a classic 'Stay ahead of the pack' 😀

Because Pellè has had it, for a bit, and I don't know whether Long will be on or off the pitch, so Tadic has too. Berahino likewise. Hazard has not yet exploded, so must be a priority.

Indeed, I wish to stay ahead of the pack. If I can.

I know they have to go sometime soon. But surely not for a hit when they are playing Aston Villa? They fair poorly in your 'hole in the wall' table too 😉

1.) Their own stats are now disappointing
2.) True, of course. But have you checked just how many Saints players can score?

                      1) Shots on target aren't my kettle of fish. I prefer Shots inside box and chances created, you know 😉

                      2) Pelle's goal involvement ratio is pretty high. And does it matter if they are going to score 3 or 4 anyways? Surely Pelle is going to be involved

A, then react accordingly to whoever from Cesc, Costa and Pelle get booked.
