Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Welbeck at the Double

Danny Welbeck scores twice as England sweep aside Slovenia. Roy Hodgson’s is optimistic on Phil Jagielka’s leg problem. Everton deliver some positive news on Leighton Baines’ hamstring. Mario Balotelli picks up a groin injury in training for Italy, whilst Mathieu Debuchy edges towards his Arsenal comeback.

Welbeck Bags a Brace

Handed a role up front alongside Wayne Rooney, the Arsenal striker cast aside his indifferent league form to score twice in a 3-1 win over Slovenia. Rooney’s spot-kick duties helped him get amongst the goals, whilst Raheem Sterling earned an assist for Roy Hodgson’s side.

The Scout Says: With Olivier Giroud returning to training for the Gunners, Welbeck will need to carry that form into the Gameweek 12 clash against former club United to stave off the challenge from the Frenchman. He has now scored 10 goals in 17 starts in all competitions this season – sadly for Arsenal and his Fantasy owners, only two of Welbeck’s goals have arrived in the Premier League from nine starts. Given that Arsene Wenger has recently rolled out a 4-4-2, Giroud’s physical presence certainly offers an alternative alongside the free-scoring Sanchez, and with the Gunners boss previously hailing Welbeck’s versatility, a possible shift out wide in the future would force his 16% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners to think twice over retaining his services. The Gameweek 12 clash with United looks vital for Welbeck’s FPL ownership.

Balotelli Out of Italy Squad

The Liverpool striker has been ruled out of international duties after picking up groin and hamstring problems during training with Italy. The Italian FA confirmed Balotelli’s omission was more a precautionary measure, suggesting the issue isn’t overly concerning ahead of the Reds’ trip to Palace next weekend.

The Scout Says: These concerns surrounding Balotelli’s fitness are more than countered by the potential return of Daniel Sturridge. The England striker has stepped up his recovery and could be set to strengthen his manager’s options for the Selhurst Park encounter in Gameweek 12. Sturridge and Balotelli have only played once together – in Liverpool’s most impressive performance of the season back in Gameweek 3 away to Spurs – before injury curtailed the former’s season. Given that Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have both started just one league match apiece this term – even in Sturridge’s absence – it may well be that if Balotelli is out, Rodgers will continue with a lone striker system until the Italian is fit and available. Such a scenario could continue to frustrate Raheem Sterling owners, then – the youngster seems best suited to the role in “the hole” behind a front two but has had little opportunity to display his talents in a central role thus far.

Baines Concerns Lessen

Fears over a possible period of absence for the Everton left-back look to have eased after scans revealed the hamstring problem sustained during England training isn’t as bad as first reported. Indeed, the Toffees offered some encouraging news via a statement on their official website:

“He returned to Finch Farm for an assessment which has since showed that he has sustained a ‘grade one’ hamstring injury – the least significant on the scale of such injuries. Baines will continue to be monitored by Everton’s medical team and, although he remains a doubt for next Saturday, he has not yet been ruled out of the game against Sam Allardyce’s Hammers.”

The Scout Says: Positive news for Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike, then, and given Baines’ injury history, we’ll be expecting a quick return to action. The left-back has only missed 12 league matches over the previous five seasons, though the addition of European matches is clearly extending him this term – Baines is one of only four outfield players to have started all four of Everton’s Europa League matches thus far. As we discussed yesterday, Baines is the second most popular defender in FPL after serving up a goal or assist in seven of the last nine, and such a level of consistency will surely persuade his owners to hold if the worst-case scenario turns out to be a return in Gameweek 13.

Hodgson Hopeful on Jagielka

The England manager confirmed that Everton’s centre-half was forced off with a dead leg towards the end of last night’s win but is optimistic Jagielka will be available to face Scotland on Tuesday.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind that both John Stones and Antolin Alcaraz are injured for the Toffees, a stint on the sidelines for Jagielka would leave Sylvain Distin as the only experienced centre-half available. Jagielka has played every minute of the season so far and has already netted twice – despite being overshadowed by Baines, he currently sits on 48 points in the FPL game, level with Branislav Ivanovic. With Hodgson’s words allaying concerns, though, a quick return to action means Jagielka may yet appear on some radars ahead of clashes with West Ham, Spurs, Hull and QPR in the next five.

Schneiderlin Worry for Saints

The Southampton midfielder has been ruled out of France’s friendly against Sweden on Tuesday evening after undergoing scans on his right adductor. Schneiderlin, who was afforded 10 minutes as a late sub during Friday’s draw with Albania, will now return to St Mary’s for further assessment ahead of the weekend trip to Villa.

The Scout Says: Schneiderlin has played every minute of the season so far for Ronald Koeman’s side so a potential absence would be a bitter blow for the Saints. Whilst a total of three goals and an assist has persuaded 17% of FPL managers to snap up his services, the Frenchman’s industrious displays in front of the back-four have also played a major part in delivering seven clean sheets in the opening 11 Gameweeks. With the Saints set to face City, Arsenal, United and Everton in four of the five fixtures directly after their Villa Park visit, an absence for Schneiderlin would place further questions over his side’s ability to retain their resilience over that testing schedule.

Diouf Fires Senegal Into Finals

Stoke striker Mame Biram Diouf headed Senegal into January’s African Cup of Nations by grabbing the match-winner in a 1-0 victory over Algeria yesterday. Southampton’s Sadio Mane and West Ham midfielder enforcer Cheikhou Kouyate also started and, along with Papiss Cisse and Diafra Sakho, are amongst those who’ll be missing from domestic duties in a couple of months’ time.

The Scout Says: The tournament takes place from January 17 until February 8, or Gameweeks 22-24 to you and I. Depending on their nation’s progress, the likes of Sakho, Kouyate and Mane could potentially miss Gameweek 25, when West Ham and Southampton go head-to-head on February 10. Certainly, Sakho’s absence would likely have the biggest impact from a Fantasy perspective, though the tournament also comes at a time where the fixture list stiffens for West Ham – Sam Allardyce’s side face Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal between Gameweek 23 and 29, suggesting many will be keen to part company during that spell..

Debuchy Nears Gunners Comeback

The Arsenal right-back has confirmed he could be back in action next month as he steps up his recovery from an ankle injury. Speaking to the club’s official website, Debuchy went on to say:

“My injury is now better. I work hard every day with the physio and I want to be back on the pitch in December. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Scout Says: A return to action would immediately place question marks over Calum Chambers’ pitch time at right-back, bearing in mind Debuchy started the first four Gameweeks before succumbing to injury. Now down to 5.2 in FPL, the Frenchman seems likely to reclaim his starting berth on the right, then, though the continued absence of Laurent Koscielny could allow the versatile Chambers to partner Per Mertesacker in the centre of the back-four until the injuries finally clear. As we saw in Gameweeks 3 and 4, though, the 17%-owned Chambers may face a tough task to retain his role once Wenger has a full quota of defenders to choose from, though it remains to be seen just how quickly Koscielny can recover from an ongoing Achilles complaint that has now kept him on the sidelines for the last four Gameweeks.

Thinking of doing a boring Moore to Saylor/Yun transfer seeing as Moore seems to have been dropped. Cesc and Baines being doubts means I will need a full playing squad although I believe both will play.

Saylor was great back in the day if he could just stay fit. I know QPR have some good home fixtures on the horizon but it is still QPR and I'm just not convinced with Yun.

What do you think the back four will be when everyone is fit? My mates who are Newcastle fans think that Dummet is the one to be dropped once Santon is back not Saylor.

As B K says, we now have Sir Ryan Taylor to contend with, also.

                  I suspect:

                  Janmaat, Taylor, Coloccini, Dummett

                  ------Ryan Taylor ----?

Good point Doos. If Raylor can nail down a place he could be gold again. Had him a couple of years ago and he was almost 'never bench' territory, scoring wonder goals against anyone!

McCartney, Jarvis, Ravel, Matty Taylor, Diame, Maiga, Rat, Joe Cole, Nolan, Jaaskelainen, Alou Diarra and Jack Collison.

    What a transformation.

Sold pelle and bagged the profit. Bertrand next to go with profit made and chambers when debuchy comes back. Southampton's fixtures make these look like such obvious moves to those paying attention that i'm sure the transfers made by gameweek 13 will be the ones that set the winners apart from the casuals, but i can just see southampton proving us all wrong and keeping it up through to xmas...

Chambers is going to be difficult to replace with anyone near as good at that price. Debuchy, for example, has only fallen 0.3 which is ridiculous.

I don't actually have Chambers down to play for me until December 6th, so im also considering ditching. If he's not playing at all in December than he's no value at any price. Maybe Debuchy only dropped 0.3 as he was red flagged (does that still apply?).

I know; chambers was a great budget option while it lasted. Tactic now (when debuchy comes in) is to choose a budget defender with great fixtures until the end of january, then reassess with the wildcard then (using all of your lovely profit)

I'm not sure with the injuries to Baines and Hutton. I have 2 FTs so I was happy to go with Bertrand to Colo, to play Forster, Colo, Baines, Hutton. That could be too many doubts to feel comfortable with!

I might lose points, but it was the only way i could afford sanchez. Would have ended up wasting a transfer last week and taking a hit next week. If pelle out scores austin (my replacement) by more than four this week, i permit you to laugh at me...

I have Baines, Bertrand/Colo, and Hutton playing at the mo. With Naylor and Chambers benched. If Hutton is unlikely to make it i may to Chambers to Colo instead, for a bit more depth.

In the interest of fairness for the HWC final do you think both NZ and us Gauchos could submit our starting 11 to you, as we feel it's unfair if we have to submit our team to Billy with NZ being in the final. If Billy agrees of course.

    My turn to request some advice 🙂 😀 😆 😀 🙂

Doing Tadic>Siggy(gw13) and Chambers>Caulker(gw15) allows me 1.3m itb to spend in GW14. What to do (1FT)?

    Begovic Krul
    Baines Clyne Caulker Naylor Wisdom
    Sanchez Sterling Siggy Oscar Downing
    Aguero Pelle Austin

    - I could do Chambers>Yun(gw14) instead, to have 2.1m to spend in GW15 instead, as an alternative.
    - Clyne>Azpi, though I like my defensive rotation and not keen on dropping Clyne.
    - Perhaps Sterling>ADM/Hazard
    - Pelle>9.3 (eg. Lukaku), or 10.1 (with Chambers>Yun instead), which might be able to get me Rooney (currently 10.2)
    - Chambers>4.5 (eg. Robertson), Clyne>Coleman

    Any other bright ideas?

Cheers. Could be a "downgrade" if Sterling and Sturridge find each other though, since Liverpool have better fixtures (ie. against teams with worse defences)

Did you watch the Spurs-Liverpool game? Liverpool were rampant and Sturridge and Balotelli should probably have filled their boots. Could be the catalyst the team needs.

Sturridge's return "unlocks" a large chunk of Coutinho's skill (ie. his throughballs and vision), which is lost when he doesn't have a forward running deep. Remember the impact Coutinho-Sturridge had last time they were both introduced to a team that was playing really poorly 😉

Yeah, certainly a good option that I'll have to consider. Though I'd prefer to find that extra 0.3 for Terry if I went for a Chelsea defender. I like goalscoring defenders.

        1. davies
          • 9 Years

He doesn't score often enough to warrant the 0.3 more, imo. When Chelsea keep a CS - Azpi is usually on the BAPS.

Terry was near the top of the headed attempts from set pieces stats last season for defenders, and is 3rd now (behind Tomkins and Tomkins), so there's clearly a lot of potential there. All it takes is one good corner>header and Terry repays that 0.3 investment

I'd prefer to get Yun over Caulker if you are going to get a QPR def. Caulker is too pricey IMO. See how Liverpool play with Sturridge back before you sell Sterling he may be my Tadic replacement. Rooney is not a bad shout if you can get that .1 somewhere if not I'd fancy Bony with his fixtures.

Yeah, 0.8 is a lot to spill, but I think it could be worth it for the extra offensive potential. It will be decided on whether or not I can see better use for that 0.8 elsewhere I reckon.

Balotelli is going to be released by Sturridge coming back in the team. He really thrives when he has a quick and mobile striker playing just ahead of him doing the runs that open space for him. Can't wait to see that pairing again

I'd be keen to do Tadic>Downing if I were you. He's too good value at 5.7 to pass up... on set-pieces, good fixtures, playing in the hole most games, behind Sakho and Valencia, with Carroll coming on late for him to ping crosses at.

Oscar, Hazard, Downing all better prospects at the moment. Even Sterling (equally out of form) or Walcott (does the same in 15 minutes what ADM does in 70 - 90)..

pretty much this. until that United attack starts to look more fluid I'm not touching him. Hull and Stoke are going to set up to kick lumps out of him and counterattack the shyte out of that game with 10 men behind the ball, not gonna be easy...

Actually looking forward to that one. Haven't been paying particularly close attention to either of those teams, so curious to take a closer view of Diame, Robertson, Lamela, Eriksen, and Chadli in particular. Maybe Kane starts too which would be very interesting indeed. If he does well I might be tempted to do Pelle>Kane and open up the checkbook some serious upgrades elsewhere (Coleman and ADM for example)

    Begovic Krul

    Baines Clyne Caulker Wisdom Moore

Sanchez Di maria Hazard Downing Marney

    Aguero Pelle Berahino

    2FT 0.5 ITB

This week I think I'll risk going without Costa. I may just do berahino > Austin.

However next week I think I'll do Begovic, Clyne, Hazard > Fabianski Reid Siggy

This would then give me the option to do Pelle > Costa the following week if Costa is still fit and not suspended.

How does that sound? Is Austin a better mid term option than Berahino?

      I like members stats tables,

Narrow down target players with good potential (high shots on target or chances created)...or just someone with lots of goals/points (Sanchez).

Then consider price, and the rest of your team.

Rate My team is good too, but not always accurate with the latest trends, changing player roles, formation changes.

    First post 😀

    Thinking of doing:
    Bertrand -> Yun
    Tadic - Wallcot

Should I do it this week for a hit, or next week for free?
What do you think, wil Wally start against United? If he does, he will surely do some damage.

      better wait.
he would have to do serious damage to justify a hit.

      Welcome! 😀

Next week for sure, always be a week late on the bandwagon rather than a week early.
Who knows how good Walcott will perform, could be weeks before he scores.

Better to wait (but I'm pretty conservative in my FPL)

      welcome to this amazing website...

Better to wait for Wally expect many 25 mins play time for the next 2-3 weeks..

I would wait a week on the Bertrand move and several weeks on Theo. IMO he needs to play 2-3 games before I would pick him up.

After joining River Plate as a seven-year-old Barcelona reportedly offered Lamela and his family £100,000 a year, as well as a house and employment for his parents, to move to Barcelona, in a similar deal to the one that saw Lionel Messi move to Spain as a youngster. In 2004, a Trans World Sport film crew travelled to Argentina to interview a 12-year-old Lamela who was already making headlines after scoring 120 goals for River Plate's youth side the previous season. In the video, Lamela declares his wish to follow in the footsteps of Diego Maradona and win a World Cup for Argentina

Probably should have moved to Barcelona...

He is the midfield version of Bendtner. Big head, big arse.

There's probably dozens of players like that in Barcelona's youth academy. Who's to say he wouldn't have gotten lost in the crowd and fizzled out like Bojan did?

At least he's still earning top-dollar at a pretty big PL club, which is better than 99.9% of football youth prospects

I just mean from a development perspective, at age 7 getting into the Barcelona set up could have been really big for him as he clearly has natural talent.

      Probably, yes.

But that doesn't sound too bad, either.

Of course not but the development system of River Plate vs that of Barcelona are worlds apart.

You've missed out the bit where he fulfilled his lifelong ambition to play behind Ricardo Fuller and Kenwynne Jones on a cold Tuesday night in December at the Britannia.
