The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 12

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours.

Defence

Chelsea’s upturn in fixtures earns Thibaut Courtois a climb to the top of the keeper standings. At 6.0, the Belgian is a relatively cheap option when compared to most of Jose Mourinho’s defensive options and a kind set of fixtures (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL, sto) in the next six should arrest a run of four matches without a clean sheet. At 7.2, Branislav Ivanovic remains our Blues defender of choice – we expect the Serbian’s raids down the right to come to fruition over that schedule.

West Ham pair Adrian and Aaron Cresswell have some kind upcoming fixtures (eve, NEW, wba, SWA, sun) to prosper. At 5.4, the latter may be the dearest Hammers defensive option around but he’s justified that in recent outings, earning 22 points in the last four Gameweeks.

Having kept out the Hammers last time out, Villa duo Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar are on the up ahead of showdowns with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next five. Vlaar is, however, nursing a knock picked up on international duty and any possible period of absence will dent our confidence here.

Southampton slip in our estimations as Ronald Koeman’s men brace themselves for matches against City, United, Arsenal and Everton in the next six, suggesting Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand will find it hard to replicate the resilience which has seen them concede just five times in 11 matches.

Elsewhere at the back, Leighton Baines stays at the defenders summit in spite of his current hamstring complaint. Given that Everton have refused to rule him out of this weekend’s clash with West Ham, there’s every chance of a speedy return to action for a player who has now earned attacking returns in seven of the last nine.

Burnley’s Kieran Trippier remains in consideration after finally earning attacking points last time around. The right-back served up a 12-point haul against Hull and, now down to 4.8, has Stoke, Villa, Newcastle and QPR in the next four. If you’re scraping around the budget bracket for a first-choice defender, the 3.9-priced Yun Suk-Young has started the last four for QPR and hosts Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in the next six, whilst Paul Dummett (4.1) has been key to the resilience which has seen Newcastle concede just once in the last four.

Midfield

Alexis Sanchez’ move up front for Arsenal ensures the in-form Chilean holds steady at the summit – the Gunners face three dodgy defence (MUN, wba, sto) in the next four.

Eden Hazard is our premium Chelsea midfielder – the decision is made easier by the fact that Cesc Fabregas is battling a hamstring injury and is also just one booking from suspension. The 10.0-priced Hazard has served up double figures in each of his last two at the Bridge ahead of the Blues’ above-mentioned run, whilst Oscar, at 8.4 and with 4% ownership, looks a decent cheaper differential, with three goals in the last six.

Stewart Downing remains our mid-price midfielder of choice, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson climbs as Swansea’s fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 13 and Nacer Chadli continues to thrive for out-of-sorts Tottenham. The Belgian’s sixth goal of the season against Stoke took him into second spot in the FPL midfield standings and with Hull, Everton, Palace and Burnley in the upcoming six, it’s perhaps a little surprising only 16% have snapped him up.

Ross Barkley has started three of the last four for Everton since returning from injury and has the fixtures to play his way into consideration. The Toffees entertain West Ham, Hull and QPR and also travel to Spurs in the next five and at 6.7, Barkley’s 4% ownership suggests he could be a decent mid-price differential if he can avoid Roberto Martinez’ rotation policy.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Raheem Sterling faces Palace, Stoke, Leicester and Sunderland in the next four, though with reports suggesting Daniel Sturridge has suffered another injury setback in training, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can rediscover his early-season form.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic is the main faller. The playmaker’s underlying stats remain strong but, having blanked in seven of the opening 11 Gameweeks, his consistency is clearly an issue and with the schedule stiffening, he may struggle to stay in the reckoning.

Forwards

Up front, Sergio Aguero holds firm after firing seven goals in the last four for City, with the Argentine’s armband credentials affording him the edge over any frontline option right now.

Finally free from injury and rested for Spain’s recent internationals, Diego Costa looks poised to take advantage of Chelsea’s upcoming schedule. Having scored in seven of his nine league appearances, the summer signing is on a par with Aguero for consistency but sits just one yellow card away from a single-match ban after earning a fourth booking of the season at Anfield last time around.

Below them, Charlie Austin and Diafra Sakho look the pick of the budget strikers right now. The former’s four goals in the last three – including back-to-back strikes against Chelsea and City underline his capabilities, whilst Sakho has netted in all but one of his league starts for the Hammers and, like Austin, looks an absolute steal in the sub 6.0 category.

Olivier Giroud’s imminent return for Arsenal knocks Danny Welbeck down in our estimations, whilst Graziano Pelle – another forward who is one booking shy of a ban – also takes a tumble in light of Southampton’s post-Gameweek 12 schedule.

Further down, Tottenham’s Harry Kane offers an option in the sub-5.0 bracket – handed his first start in the previous Gameweek, his current form suggests the youngster could be a real bargain if he remains ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in the pecking order. We’d tentatively reserved a place for Daniel Sturridge ahead of Liverpool’s fine fixtures but, as mentioned above, the striker could be sidelined yet again after apparently suffering a thigh injury in training.

      I don't know. Seems harsh to sit here and point fingers from our couches. How long should a thigh strain really keep a professional athlete out for anyway? He's already been resting for quite a while...and rehabbing daily. I think it would be harsh to blame the medical staff.

    B) Sanchez and Chadli in

      B. Didn't pay much attention to Chadli before, but seems like he's in for a good season. You can expect more goals from him, and may benefit with Kane's presence up front.

    Could this GW be the biggest troll ever? All these flagged players could play, come off the bench to score, etc. Will be a few twists and turns to come in this one I feel. Will be interesting to see the comment section here on matchday 😆

      I think the worst possible thing to do would be taking out these 50/50 guys for hits as I'm sure many will do. Starting the GW at 0 instead of -4 seems like a big advantage.

    Please help!

    I've snoozed and lost out on my window of opportunity to dump ADM+Hendo for Alexis+Downing! Gah!

    1 FT, 1.0 itb

    Forster (Heaton)
    Baines, Bertrand, Clyne (Wisdom, Huff)
    ADM, Siggy, Jedinak, Oscar (Hendo)
    Sakho, Costa, Kun

    Should i:

    A.) Just wait on ADM (ars, HUL, STO) and save the FTs and funds for cleaning out Bertrand and Clyne next GW
    B.) ADM+Bert>Alexis+Neil Taylor (mci, CRY, QPR) -4 (then play Baines, Clyne, Duff this gw)
    C.) ADM+Clyne>Alexis+Cresswell -4

    I feel like there's a lot at stake! All guesses and reasons why you lean that way are appreciated!

      I would prefer B. Have a soft corner for Clyne, and he's got a better BP chance. Anyway Baines is set to miss this week so you will have Wisdom coming off the bench. The deciding factor is ADM -> Sanchez.

    Would you do Fab+Pelle>>Sanchez+Austin (-4) this week? Have Costa.
    Alternative, would be to save FT and do, Mane+Pelle>>Walcott+Austin, for free. Thoughts?
    Consider price changes. Fab and Pelle may fall soon.
    Cheers.

          Team looks fine for this GW mate:
          Forster
          Baines, Clyne, Moore
          ADM, Mane, Fab, Downing
          Pelle, Kun(c), Costa (vc)

          Boyd/Chambers, Chambers/Boyd, Hutton

          IF and it's a big IF, as I see it at this stage, 2 of ADM, Fab, Baines are out ... you have two good subs and 3 that will play if 3 are out. I wouldn't take a hit. Play them and if they withdraw have faith on your bench and move next week...

    Draft league side for this week..

    Adrian

    Mangala/Bertrand/Kaboul

    Tadic/Barkley/Walcott/Moses

    RVP/Lukaku/Austin

    Bench: Trippier/Lallana/Adebayor/Giroud/Mane

    A) Do I have the right side out?
    B) Who would be the best captaincy pick
    C) Which of these lot needs to go? I have 1 transfer. Thinking Adebayor to a defender or mid for this week.

    Assuming Baines is ruled out this week, is the below madness or playing the fixtures well?

    GW12: Baines -> Ivanovic
    GW13: Chadli & Pelle -> Boyd & Rooney/Falcao

    Ivanovic has great fixtures and is probably the 2nd most offensive defender after Baines, and if Baines is out this week he has tot and che in 2 of his next 3.

    Boyd and Rooney/Falcao have plum home fixtures in GW13-14, unlike Pelle and Chadli.

          Yes, Ivanovic doesn't seems to have run out of steam a bit and I think Azpi might prove the better bet. I'm not sure that there are many quality 5.4 mids however.

            Yeah, there aren't unfortunately. A shame I can't stretch to Downing at 6m.

            SWA have a decent couple of fixtures in GW13-14 but the likes of Dyer, Routledge and Montero are just out of reach also.

        True. I'd probably bring him back after the mcy game though, and with the slow moving transfer markets this season would likely only lose 0.1-0.2m in value over the 4 weeks (which is bearable)

          Transfers will start going a bit wierd I think. People won't be transferring their favourite players in, they be looking for replacements of injuries/bans so baines probably won't go up.

    How far ahead to you guys look at fixtures when making transfers?

    I seem to look fairly short term for the bigger hitters/attacking players (max 4-5 weeks) whereas for cheapie rotation defenders I look much longer term (up to the next WC in some cases)

      That sounds about right. Defence, I do it on a small term basis too. 5 defenders means it's easy if things go wrong.

      So I'm going to get rid of clyne and bertrand, hopefully for caulker and terry. Terry for the long term and caulker for his nice fixtures and he will play every minute

      Same. Saw some ask here about which is the better option until jan, season keeper etc but the fact is its more likely that we would have sold the player by then especially attackers.

      I tried to minimize defensive changes (only 2 this season)
      So would be spending most of my time playing my resource upfront where the big points lie

    Sturridge getting injured again is bad news for him and liverpool. I don't like players getting injured but it sure does help me, I was worried about sterling getting back in the points with him back.

        yeah alexis is on another planet...wenger is easing theo back in, and with him an injury is always round the corner unfortunately...he has had more injuries than diaby since 2006! diaby 40, theo 42! 😯

          I have missed out on Sancez's hauls. Planned to get him next week but feels like points chasing. Still think Sanchez is needed?

          Would get

          Downing Fab ADM Sanchez Boyd
          Aguero/Costa/Austin

          plus 1.3m left

            looks really nice...who are you getting rid off in midfield for that? alexis will continue to score goals and make assists imo, not at all point chasing 🙂

            fab/adm can easily go for hazard/oscar etc. if need be...

              Haz to Sanchez
              Pelle to Austin

              I know odd to get rid of Haz but he so frustrating to own and happy to stick with CH in Costa and Fab. 1.3m means a better defence later too.

      I'm giving Sterling one more chance against Palace. Liverpool are clueless up front at the moment, and Sterling doesn't have it in him to carry a team like Sturridge/ Suarez have done.

    A) gw12: adm->hazard gw13: pelle->austin and use cash to upgrade clyne to azpi/ivan after gw13

    B) gw12: adm->oscar gw13: clyne-> reid and pelle->rooney -4

    Played my WC at the end of the last GW, been transferring like crazy since!

    Finally settled on this..thoughts?

    Krul
    Baines - Dummett - Clyne
    Sanchez - Chadli - Sigurdsson - Sterling
    Aguero (c) - Costa - Ayoze

    Guzan - Wanyama - Chambers - Wisdom

      get rid of either Krul or Dummet, and get SWA, WHU, QPR cover in
      Clyne --> Azpi for example
      Sterling not the best bet considering Sturridge is out again.
      Not sure about Wanyama going forward.

      Wanyama -> Boyd

      Clyne -> Azpi

      Don't like the Newcastle double up at the back either.

      Also, Sterling isn't the best option considering Sturridge is out (again). Maybe Austin instead of Ayoze?
