Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 14

A 2-0 win over QPR handed Swansea a sixth clean sheet of the season but Tuesday evening’s triumph came at a cost for Garry Monk’s side as ever-present Neil Taylor toppled off the Suspension Tightrope. After earning his fifth caution of the campaign, the left-back is one of four players who are set to serve a one-match ban this weekend as he sits on the sidelines for the Welsh club’s trip to West Ham.

Chelsea are once again deprived of a first-team regular due to suspension ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s trip to Newcastle. This time round Jose Mourinho needs to make do without Nemanja Matic after the midfield enforcer earned a fifth yellow in last night’s home win over Tottenham.

Andi Weimann and Wes Morgan will both miss Villa’s home clash against Leicester. The former earned his fifth yellow in midweek, while the latter received his marching orders against Liverpool. Morgan’s absence offering Liam Moore the chances of a rare start for the visitors but, up against Christian Benteke, he may well struggle to bring in the points as Nigel Pearson’s side attempt to improve upon a run of one clean sheet in ten Gameweeks.

Taking stock of the Tightrope after the midweek matches, we now have 22 players sitting just one caution away from a ban. Essentially, one more yellow card in the next five Gameweeks (until the extension kicks in on January 1) for any of them will trigger an automatic one-match suspension. From a Fantasy perspective, Chelsea playmaker Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 51% of sides) is the most high profile, though owners of the likes of Graziano Pelle, Vincent Kompany, Morgan Schneiderlin, Daryl Janmaat and Ryan Shawcross also have cause for concern.

Stoke, Southampton and Hull are most affected here – each of those sides have a trio of players teetering on the Tightrope as we head towards Gameweek 15.

As Fantasy managers are more than aware, Diego Costa is back for Chelsea after sitting out last night’s clash against Spurs. There’s no doubt his disciplinary record on the road is a worry, though – having been booked in all five away appearances, he’ll need to curb his enthusiasm for fear of facing another suspension later in the season.

Newcastle welcome back a couple of midfielders for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s side, with Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko looking set to return to first-team duties. City’s defensive worries also ease a little as Everton roll up to the Etihad. With Vincent Kompany expected to remain on the sidelines, Eliaquim Mangala is available once again, after sitting out Wednesday’s trip to Sunderland.

Finally, Gaston Ramirez and Claudio Yacob will serve the last of three-match bans this weekend as Hull welcome West Brom to the KC.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

you would like to swab old vaginas for cancer for a living? no thx

being a doctor is not as rewarding as you may think, you get to witness the epidemic of unhealthy habits in our society

footballer all the way solely bc of the impact it has on your overall well being

First reply was modded so here we go againL

Depends, if swabbing said old vaginas leads to early detection of cancer and saving someone's life it's pretty damn rewarding.

Footballers, at least the highest level ones, are permanently in the public eye, surrounded by people who only want their money, can't really go out boozing or anything like that (mostly), miss out on things like Christmas holidays because of matches and travelling (I know it sounds weird but St. Stephen's day with your kids is much nicer than St. Stephen's day playing football in the cold, not to mention not getting to fill up at Christmas dinner) usually are up at about 5 or 6 in the morning most days of the week. Great pay, if you're one of the top level lads. Not so great if you're a lower earner for a smaller team/lower division side.

valid points there, especially the one about scrutinized for every single move, or decision you make and god forbid you make a mistake. every career has its pros and cons and refraining from consuming alcohol is not necessarily a con in my opinion. i just know that exercise is the key to life and what better way to accomplish this than by playing football?

i just worked in healthcare for 10+ years and its actually quite scary what you witness on a daily basis hence the reason why i do research now and work in a lab with very little human interaction.

I agree with you about pros and cons (I actually packed in drinking mostly long ago for the sake of my football). Exercise certainly is vital so it would be great to be paid to be in top shape but there are other things as well, I shudder to think what's it like to be an 18 year old thrust into the limelight as a footballer. Exciting when things go well, terrifying if they go badly. And then of course the cut throat nature of getting a pro contract/the rejection of not making it at a big club. They're just the negatives, of course there are some great positives as well, depends on the personality more than anything I think.

I'm sorry you had such a lousy experience, some folks are much better suited to the research environment (I am the exact opposite, my first degree was a scientific research one and it really is not for me at all).

big commitment there. thought about going to med school but couldnt get past the 4 years of med plus another 3 min to specialize and possible 1-2 more of residency. Neurologist would have prob been the path i wouldve taken also, or possibly anesthesiology or radiology looked very tempting as well. good luck in your future endeavors

When I read residency I twigged you must be in the US. 😀 Very very tough over there is what I see, I really don't blame you for not going into it. There is so much other nonsense attached to the US system, extra research, USMLE exams as well as your normal exams etc.

Ireland has it's own problems, especially in the hospitals but it is trying to get them under control. Will be quite tempted to head to New Zealand after my intern year, much better conditions.

              Cheers 😀

What if Everton get a pen? Or Baines assists?

The whole reason why Baines is over £7m is because he's the one defender in FPL who isn't dependent on cleanies to get his points and can still get baps even when his team loses.

Absolutely no point having Baines if you're going to bench him for what looks like a tough match up. That's just foolishness as far as I'm concerned.

Not sure what to do, switch Rooney to Costa or get rid of one of Duff or Naylor for Azpi. Got the cash for either, but how do we think Che will do against New ?

I just brought Roonster in for Costa and got burned on that one. Waiting to hear more about Rooney, if he's in doubt then I'll transfer back to Costa. Do both if you can. If not, I'd say wait on Roonster.. if he is playing, then maybe go the DEF route.

Think longer term than just this week.

Azpi likely to get more clean sheets than Naylor or Duff. Obviously, he will, so if that's the move you think is best then do it.

Shame you took out Costa for Pig but you got Rooney for a reason, so having made your bed......

I did the old Costa - Rooney switch, got carried away with the International hullabaloo & the low scoring/price ratio of Costa. Think I might stick with the Pig for now. Which New will turn up against them this weekend?

I could get both of them for -4 but my hits don't seem to be coming off at the mo'. Did a -4 last week to bring Yaya & Jed for Tadic & ADM 🙁 . Still there's always time for that to work out before the Africa Cup.

For the first few GW, I went for Fabregas and Costa. Want to gain increase in TV and also consistent points. Oscar wasn't really nailed on early (first 5 gameweeks), or maybe due to injury, i'm not sure. Since the last 3 GW, I took a hit and changed to oscar and hazard[from fabregas and di maria].

Part of reason because I need to free up cash to get azpiculeta [which i didn't manage to get before GW14 since forgot got midweek game =( ] and also I realised ever since GW6 (the start of when oscar nailed on as a starter), Oscar had outscored fabregas 52 to 45. In the same span, Hazard scored 54.

Fabregas still remains a threat though, with corners and set pieces, as opposed to oscar. But I feel oscar will provide more goal threat in open play. But considering that I can get chelsea defender+oscar in place of fabregas+clyne, I opt for the former.

Its a move that keeps prodding me. But having Costa kind of equalises not having Hazard.

Fabs will still be productive. The only overwhelming advantage I see for Haz is pens but I think Fabs more likely to get assists with Costa in the lineup.

Tempted by something similar. I drafted Clyne from the beginning and not really wanting to drop, but those SOU fixtures for the next 10 are mostly bad. Unless we think he is going to get a ton more goals/assists, I think it's the right way to go. I'd like to get in Azpi, and will have to decide between him and Costa (since I got Fab/Haz).

Bony home to Spurs next week looks every bit as salivating as Costa home to Hull. Perhaps I won't be making that transfer after all.

No fixture for Bony makes me salivate and I'm an owner.

Not looking to drop him but I've got about 7 players in my team with a better fixture than Spurs that week.

Spurs are a circus at the back. Siggy and Bony will have a field day.

Agree, I had Luis in my team until like the day before the season began. Surprised he doesn't get more time, but Azpi is bossing it up.

    The case for Costa.
He has played less than two matches the last month.
Surely he will be fully rested and ready to show his highest level.

A clear VC candidate this GW.

VC's shouldnt be injury prone imo.
