Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 17 – Sunday

Martin Skrtel rescues a late point as Liverpool and Arsenal share the Anfield spoils. Olivier Giroud nets once again for the Gunners, whist Adam Johnson breaks Newcastle hearts by lashing home an injury-time winner in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

Giroud and Cazorla Form Continues

The duo rolled up to Anfield on the back of a brace apiece in last week’s 4-1 win over Newcastle and maintained their strong recent showings in a four-goal thriller. Giroud’s goal means he has now scored four times in six appearances since returning from injury, whilst an assist from Cazorla took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists in his last five. Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck were fielded on the flanks once again to accommodate the Frenchman up front and whilst the Chilean’s owners will have reservations in light of a single strike in six, next weekend’s home clash with QPR should afford him another chance to impress.

At the back, the Gunners continue to look porous in the absence of Laurent Koscielny. Mathieu Debuchy’s first goal of the season suggests that, at a price of 5.2, he could be one to consider if his compatriot returns quickly to help raise their resilience.

Liverpool Midfielders in the Points

For many Fantasy managers, yesterday was an opportunity for Raheem Sterling to stake a claim for a return to our 15-man squads. Handed the central role up front as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in a 3-4-3 formation, Sterling failed to replicate his midweek brace at Bournemouth and was instead overshadowed by Philippe Coutinho’s first-half strike, whilst Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana earned an assist apiece as the Reds salvaged a late point.

The fixtures are now very much in Liverpool’s favour – a trip to Burnley is followed by back-to-back home clashes with Swansea and Leicester before they make their way to Sunderland and Villa. Having fired 27 shots in yesterday’s 2-2 (and 19 in last week’s loss at United), Liverpool have certainly upped their attacking intentions since the new system was introduced and their main men may well force themselves into our plans if they can take advantage of such a schedule.

Skrtel to the Rescue for Reds

The big centre-half header home a late, late leveler to earn the home side a deserved share of the spoils. Liverpool went into yesterday’s match with three clean sheets in the previous four in front of their own fans and whilst they failed to keep the Gunners at bay, Skrtel’s equaliser continued his excellent recent record at Anfield – he’s racked up 34 points in the last five matches on Merseyside. Yesterday’s strike was his first of the season – a far cry from last term’s seven-goal heroics, though the Slovakian has upped his frequency of attempts considerably this term, averaging an effort every 130 minutes compared to 226 minutes in 2013/14.

Defiant Pantilimon Keeps Magpies at Bay

The Black Cats stopper took his tally to 44 points in just eight first-team outings yesterday – an average of 5.5 points per appearance. Aside from their 4-1 home mauling at the hands of City in Gameweek 14, Sunderland have conceded just three goals in their other seven matches with the big Romanian between the sticks. Pantilimon’s seven saves, allied with a couple of bonus points, earned him a second double-figure haul over that period and he remains a real bargain at just 4.5 ahead of back-to-back showdowns with Hull and Villa.

Johnson Leaves it Late

The Wearsiders’ wide man is slowly rediscovering his form after a barren first few months. Johnson managed just a single goal over the opening 15 rounds of fixtures but, after providing the assist for Jordi Gomez’ strike last week, he stepped up once again to fire a 90th-minute winner to seal the points. Whilst his last-gasp strike grabbed the headlines, it remains to be seen whether Johnson, or indeed any of Gus Poyet’s side, can stake a claim for our consideration – given that Sunderland have scored just four goals in the last seven Gameweeks, the safer bet would be on their backline.

I don't really understand why so many are getting rid of Sigurdsson. Fair call he's had a few blanks but at 6.9 he's great value for his output.

With upcoming fixtures against Villa, Liverpool and QPR I don't really understand it. At least not until the Jan.WC.

I've had him since the beginning of the season, and I'm not ditching him under any circumstances. He always blanks a 2-3 games and then delivers a big haul, something that needs getting used to. At 6.0, he was absolutely gold. People who were looking for a quick points reap have been disappointed and looking to dump him, IMHO.

Apologies if this has been posted already but:

"Swansea City hope Siggy, Britton and Montero will return for Villa game"

"Gylfi had a niggle going into the Spurs game.

"Leon and Jeff had little niggles at the start of the week and it is one of those situations where if I pushed them, they could have played.

    I have a plan.

    1) This week:
    Fabregas > Cazorla
    Sigurdsson > Eriksen (no hits)

    2) Place a £5 bet on Austin to score v Arsenal. That way I'm happy if he scores.

    3) Next week:
    Baines > Zabaleta
    Sakho > Austin (-4)

Fab>Cazorla is a bit of a waste. Save it so you don't need a hit next week, and change Fab in Jan WC

Yeah with a defence like that, you have bigger things to worry about that Fabregas. Bolster it either this week or next, could do with some Man City

Back to top 700 after a bad spell gw 12-14. Feel like the decisions made this week will be very crucial. Need some advice on the two free transfers.

Depends on how much you have in the bank.

I'm going Sakho --> Giroud and Baines --> Hutton, but if you can afford, you could downgrade Bertrand instead and keep Baines vs Stoke.

Pretty mixed reviews but I think C is the better option. I'm just not sure if it is worth the -4 with Spurs facing Leicester. Maybe Dzeko > Giroud this week and Eriksen > Silva next week

    Sakho to Austin??

If so, play Austin over Downing considering I'm playing Azpilicueta?

Sakho to Austin seems good. Just remember Austin is basically a home comforts striker.

Disagree. I think he has a good chance of scoring at Arsenal. 2 games away since early Nov is a small sample.

Fair point. He'll get a couple of chances though, I'd think? Thinking long term, he's offering great value and fixtures too.

I love Austin. One of those players you just love having in your team. He is unreal value. His record so far is brilliant. I think his long term value will be great, if not one of the best ppg to value records in the game this season!

Austin scored away to Chelsea and Southampton only in 8 away games so far this season.

Saying that, Chelsea and Southampton have the best defenses so far this season.

Tough call, but I'd start him considering the form he's in.

Up to 30k at the moment. Highest I've ever been. Making some good decisions recently. Was thinking of doing RVP to Falcao and Sakho to Giroud. Have two free transfers and exact funds.

Looking to ship Sakho due to two hard upcoming fixtures and Afcon.
As a united supporter, I watch them every week and Falcao will more than likely being playing 90 minutes for the foreseeable future barring injury.

    Thoughts?

I'm up to 7,168. Would have been even higher had I captained Austin instead of RVP.

Not so sure about the Falcao front. He could be crocked after a game. Then again, so could RVP.

I currently have Austin RVP Costa up front. Am looking to get in Kane maybe, but wondering which of them to ship.

Ya mate, I would of been delighted had I Captained Austin, but had it on RVP aswell. Was looking at Kane but his fixtures look rough soon enough. He has scored I believe 14 in 23 appearances this season which is just unreal for such a young age.

Same worries about Falcao maybe getting injured, but he is very lively these days and it seems RVP is always the casuality for Wilson because "he offers more pace" according to LVG, which he does.

My current front line is RVP, Austin, Sakho.

Could turn into Falcao, Austin and Giroud

I would say that's a great forward line.

I'm going to see how Costa performs today and if he doesn't score I'll probably change to Giroud and have a Giroud Austin RVP front line, and then see how RVP performs next weekend.

Thats a great foward line you would have! Just if I wait to see how RVP plays i'll have to keep Sakho, and thus will effectively lose a transfer.

Falcao is a beast when on form. Interested to see how many they will put past the Magpies next weekend.

Good enough for the most part. He was on the left side of a back 5 for around 65 minutes but then due to substitutions he got switched to the right side of the pitch and became ineffective.

      Think about it:

Burnley away to Spurs vs. QPR at home to West Brom.

      No brainer.

Time of year where you have to play the percentages and captaining a rotation risk is a poor percentage play.
