The Midweek Team News

Dusan Tadic is back for Southampton after returning to full training. Gylfi Sigurdsson is back in the frame for Swansea, Kevin Mirallas “has a chance” of making Everton’s home clash with stoke, Gabby Agbonlahor is available for Villa after the FA overturn his three-match suspension, whilst Chris Smalling could recover in time for United’s home encounter with Newcastle.

Tomas Rosicky, Yaya Sanogo and David Ospina are available for Arsenal’s home encounter with QPR. Laurent Koscielny “maybe has a chance” for Sunday’s trip to Upton Park, whilst Arsene Wenger has confirmed Aaron Ramsey may be on course to return against Southampton on New Year’s Day.

QPR’s left-back Yun Suk-Young is set to be sidelined “for a while” with the ankle injury that forced him off in last week’s home win over West Brom.

Gabby Agbonlahor is available for Villa’s trip to Swansea after the FA rescinded the three-match ban dished out for his dismissal against United last weekend. Paul Lambert also welcomes back Alan Hutton and Tom Cleverly, after both served one-match suspensions at home to the Red Devils, and is hopeful that Joe Cole will recover from a hamstring injury.

Sean Dyche has refused to rule out a return for Sam Vokes, after the forward continued his recovery from long-term injury with another 90-minute run-out for the reserves earlier in the week. Michael Duff is set to miss out once again for the Clarets.

Curtis Davies remains a doubt for Hull’s trip to Wearside due to a calf complaint. Fellow defender Alex Bruce is available after being forced off last weekend, though manager Steve Bruce has revealed Paul McShane is unlikely to feature unless he issues an apology on the back of recent off-field antics. The Tigers boss has recalled Thomas Ince and Maynor Figueroa from loan spells to deal with a lack of first-team options.

Manuel Pellegrini ruled out Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko until “the second part of January” during yesterday’s press briefing. The City boss also revealed the Vincent Kompany and Stevan Jovetic will “maybe” be back for Sunday’s match with Burnley – the latter has returned to training as he steps up his recovery from injury.

Chris Smalling has a chance of returning for United’s clash with Newcastle. Louis van Gaal revealed the rest of his injured players, including Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, won’t recover in time for Friday.

Southampton roll up to Palace without suspended skipper Jose Fonte, though both Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama are available after serving one-match bans last time out. Dusan Tadic has returned to full training after missing the 3-0 win over Everton due to injury.

Anthony Reveillere is ruled out for up to four weeks with a muscle injury for Sunderland, though Billy Jones and Emmanuele Giaccherini are back in contention.

Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that midfielder Ryan Mason can recover from the knock that forced him off before the break during last weekend’s win over Burnley.

Graham Dorrans (calf) and Boaz Myhill (illness) are expected to recover for the Baggies home clash against City, though Victor Anichebe again remains doubtful due to an ongoing groin complaint.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jefferson Montero and Leon Britton are all back in full training and available for Swansea after missing last week’s win at Hull with minor injuries.

Kevin Mirallas and James McCarthy both “have a chance” of making Everton’s home clash with Stoke, Roberto Martinez has confirmed. Leon Osman and Tony Hibbert are set to miss to miss the Toffees’ next two matches over Friday and Sunday, though Darron Gibson may yet be in contention.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of Friday morning’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

If no more pressing issues it sounds a good plan, but come the end of Boxing Day that plan might come to a halt if injuries strike your team.

Most players would love to play every game, whether they do so depends on their managers and to some degree, their current form. Applebonkers makes a good case for why he might be rested. He came off with a knock and in Chelsea can survive one game without Hazard.

Yeah i'm not fussed with way with Haz. Have a decent bench and we'll know very early if we want our bench replacements to do well or not, with him being the first game.

I have luka and last week he scored an o.g to take away my Coleman and Baines clean sheets - so I'm as frustrated as you.

But Stoke at home is not where I'd be getting rid. His form has been shocking - so I can't give you any other reason than he's too good too be that bad consistently.

"From Sunday I think everybody should be fit and available. We might have Rosicky back in the squad and Sanogo back in the squad. Bellerin, I don’t know yet, but certainly Rosicky and Sanogo will be available."

    Posted this before.

I think Chelsea will play their usual game against West Ham, get 1 or 2 goals up and kill the game, but QPR at home seems like a game Arsenal will struggle with.

Hence, imo, it is safer to captain hazard over alexis and vice a nailed-on player as he is less likely for a cameo.

That's what I'm saying, I think they will be 2 or 3 up.

As long as they are leading, he won't come on imo.

He is a great player but without him it's not as if they will struggle for goals.

He's played 90 in every single game of the season so far but Reveillere is out for a few weeks. I wanted to go O'Shea save the 0.1 but he's on 4 yellows and even though he has good disciplinary records in other seasons it's not really worth the risk.

I'd rather take the one GW risk of a YC than a long-term rotation risk personally.

Billy Jones is back and apparently going to start on Boxing Day.

You think Coates will start and this puts Vergini in danger? Seems to me that Jones will play LB so that means:

            Vergini, O'Shea, Brown, Jones.

Something to consider I suppose but he just seems nailed based on this season's appearances. You may be right though.

            1. CABAYE4
              • 12 Years
              9 years, 5 months ago

I'm not sure, I think any combination of Brown, Jones, Coates and Vergini could play, O'Shea being the only one nailed on.

I'd say a lot depends on whether he wants O'Shea to return to CB, in which case your one above would be the case.

Jones Coates/Vergini Brown O'Shea is also a possibility though.

Thinking about it, Poyet has said Brown needs rest over Xmas so maybe Coates will be his sub, can't see him playing Vergini-Coates as CB so O'Shea would have to play CB in that case.

To all the Sanchez being rested doom merchants, surely the argument applies to every Arsenal player?

    1. Punty
      • 10 Years

Of course, but Sanchez has dropped alot more in form (in-game, not assists/goals) and looked much more tired than say Giroud, Cazorla etc

The assists and goals have dried up as Cazorla hogs the ball.

Yeah, but I'm most concerned about him not pressing as intensive, missing easy passes, loosing ball then "dribbling", looked lost against Liverpool

Is there an article which summaries all the injury news for the upcoming gameweek so I don't have to ask in the comments section?

    b) Correct starting 11?
    c) Correct captain choice?

    Hart (Elliot)
    Bertrand,Chambers,Taylor (Wisdom, Dummett)
    Hazard(vc), Siggy, Sanchez, Yaya(c) (Downing)
    Costa, Bony, Kane

So a bit of a fire sale on Siggy again?

He scored last time this happened.

thoughts on falcao as an alternative to van p? considering the fact he played 90 last week and it is likely VanP will be rested?

If I were to bring in one MU striker it would be falcao, safer options out there I guess

Choose one: Kolo Toure or Sakho for liv def?

    No cash for Skrtel.

Chambers likely to be rested I hear... Sell him or moore?

Whichever is the more pressing. Also depends on the funds you'll need to bring in a defender. Selling Chambers will raise more money.

Probably doing the moore move, chamberd should play against qpr and the would sell him for double city or a villa defender...

        Forster (mccarthy)
        Zab azpi naylor chambers (moore)
        Yaya alexis hazard (downing boyd)
        Bony austin costa
        1ft, 1.0.

What options looks best lads? Playing around with ways to use my 2FTs

    A) Upgrade Gilks (Other GK is Fabianski)
    B) Downgrade Baines
    C) Replace one of Clyne/Bertrand - Probaby Bertie
    D) Upgrade Siggy (Have 8.8 to spend)
    E) Siggy + Baines to Di Maria + Zabaleta
    F) Replace Rooney (12.8 to spend)

So many options. I'm lost with what to do...help would be very much appreciated!!!

All the Sanchez rested talk would revolve around Arsenal having some fit players? Half their team is injured do they even have the scope to rest him?

    1. Punty
      • 10 Years

From the Wenger press con it seemed important that Rosicky was fit for playing again, Giroud, Welbeck, Podolski, Cazorla, Ox etc

We can probably rest 1 or 2 players.

I'd personally rest Ox and Giroud, from how I think they've looked.

Poldi to get a glory moment before he leaves, would be a straight swap. Leaving Cazorla and Welbeck behind Giroud? Easily done.

Armband set on Alexis at the moment, but all this talk of him being rested is worrying me.

Might be time for a punt... In the form of Oscar!

    Thoughts?

Far riskier. Nothing stops Jose from throwing out the same lineup used for Stoke against WHU.

        Really?

I'd say Oscar is absolutely nailed to play now.

Especially if Hazard is out. Hmm!

          'Especially IF Hazard is out'.

It's all up in the air regarding Oscar and Hazard IMO.

Not sure tbh, if Brendan was a bit smarter it would be easier to predict.. Lovren is injured atm so nailed on for now.. imo from the most important to the worst defender so far this season: Sakho, Toure, Skrtel/Lovren
