Captain Sensible – Gameweek 18

Our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez heads this week’s Captain Poll as Arsenal prepare to host a QPR side without a point on their travels. The Chilean has mustered just one goal and three assists since the return of Olivier Giroud but has still been backed for the armband by over 24% of the voters. Giroud, on the other hand, has netted four times in those six appearances, with his presence up front forcing a tactical re-think which has nudged Sanchez onto the flank. So far, though, less than 9% are convinced by his form.

Chelsea duo Eden Hazard (17%) and Diego Costa (12%) are also in contention for the home clash with West Ham. Hazard has scored in each of his last five appearances at the Bridge, but with no press conference from Jose Mourinho so far, we’re still in the dark over his ankle problem in time for Friday’s encounter. Costa’s home comforts cannot be ignored – he’s blanked in just one of seven matches in front of his own fans. For all their form, Sam Allardyce’s side have yet to earn a clean sheet on their travels and face a tough task to address that record.

Robin van Persie is your United weapon of choice for the visit of Newcastle. The Dutchman has delivered three double-figure hauls in his last five and faces a backline that’s without a shut-out since Gameweek 12, though his withdrawal on the hour mark against Villa last weekend is somewhat concerning.

After getting amongst the goals last weekend, City pair David Silva and Yaya Toure (both 4%) could be relative differentials. The champions roll up to West Brom still devoid of any fit strikers and a false nine system seems set to continue against Alan Irvine’s strugglers. Wilfried Bony is backed by 5% for Swansea’s home match with Villa. Benched for last week’s trip to Hull, the Ivorian is expected to lead the line once again – five goals and an assist in his last six at the Liberty sums up his form in front of the Swans’ faithful.

    My team for this week:

    Panti (Heaton)
    Azpi/Clyne/Naylor (Hutton, Wisdom)
    Sanchez (VC)/Hazard/Siggy/Downing (Ameobi)
    Bony (C)/Costa/Rooney

    2FT 0.1 M in the bank. Go with Zab/Giroud for Naylor/Rooney or save two transfers?
    Then I'd like Silva/Austin replacing Siggy/Bony. Merry Xmas to all!!

        Could be one of those days for the toon, had a similar strength team against Spurs in the cup and we all know what happened there...4-0 RVP brace and assist is my predictions.

          Falcao is the new Van Persie he will be playing furthest forward and Van Gael says it is the job of the team to feed him 🙂

            i don't think there will be much between them, at the end of the day he's not going to be playing RVP as anything other than a striker so I'm sure he'll do just fine. He definitely won't be sacrificing an opportunity to score because the manager has told everyone to feed Falcao, RVP is goals.

    2 FT's with nothing in the bank. Currently on:

    Forster (4.0)

    Clyne, Naylor, Chambers (Wisdom & Yun)

    Haz, Yaya, Siggy, Alexis (Marney)

    Roon, Austin, Costa

    - Thinking Rooney > Giroud & Forster > Courtois. Sound ok?

    Team as below , no transfer made & 3.9m to play with
    Bony & Oscar are going next week to Tekkers and silva/sterling

    Foster

    Zab , Ivan , Chambers

    Hazard , Sanchez , Eriksen , Oscar

    Austin , Bony , Carroll

    Mannone ,Boyd , wisdom, caulker

    So this week

    A - Boyd > sterling , (and have strong bench of Carroll )

    Think i got a good team, just a minor issue in defense, since i need one more defender. Thinking about downgrading either Rooney og Oscar to found a better defensive option.

    Current team:

    | Foster |
    | Jagielka | Yun | Zabaleta |
    | Oscar | Sigurdsson | Hazard | Sánchez |
    | Austin | Rooney | Costa |

    Subs:
    | Krul | Wisdom | Marney | Dummett |

    2FT & 0,5M in bank

    Any good suggestions, if i should go buy what said here i think the following is the template move

    Rooney -> Giroud
    Yun -> Debuchy

    But for me it looks abit short term option, so i am thinking about a another solution with just one transfer and use the two transfers next gameweek.

    Yun -> Coates

    Any good input would be appreciated

      Do the single yun trade. Coates, o'shea, vergini, Hutton, vlaar, Gibbs all cheap candidates.

        Vergini/O'Shea are safer

          For 1-2 games only. Villa have a better schedule beyond next two gw.

          Cant afford Vergini 0,1 short, O`Shea is a risk regarding the yellow card situation. But if i just use one transfer this week i can sort it out next week.

      No. Could go either way. As they are both good attackers you have more to lose (trade plus fewer points) than gain (more points).

      He made some comment about giving him a rest 'at some point', but then laughed it off when questioned after the Arsenal game.

    Is Bony a risk of not starting after his no show last week?
