The Weekend Team News

Here we go again, then. Less than 48 hours after Gameweek 18 got underway, the next round of fixtures is already thrust upon us – with only a handful of official news updates yesterday, though, we are mainly left to assess the lay of the land after Friday’s fixtures.

Phil Jagielka (hamstring) and Tim Howard (calf) are both likely to miss Everton’s trip to Newcastle after the pair was forced off with injuries in the home loss to Stoke. Kevin Mirallas and John Stones will be assessed after the duo sustained knocks in Friday’s 1-0 defeat. Mo Besic is hoping to shrug off an illness in time, though Steven Naismith is set to serve a one-match ban after topping off the Suspension Tightrope.

Olivier Giroud serves the first of a three-match ban as Arsenal head to West Ham this afternoon after his Boxing Day dismissal at home to QPR. Laurent Koscielny “has a chance” of making the match, though Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain “has an ever smaller chance” after missing Friday’s match with a groin problem.

Marouane Fellaini is ruled out of Man United’s trip to Spurs with a broken rib, whilst Adnan Januzaj is set miss out through illness. United are awaiting scans on the pelvic problem that forced Angel Di Maria out of Friday’s win over Newcastle. Judging by Ashley Young’s Instagram account, it seems Luke Shaw is back in the squad for the trip to White Hart Lane.

Gabby Agbonlahor will miss Aston Villa’s home encounter with Sunderland due to suspension. The forward earned his fifth yellow of the season away to Swansea and will serve a one-match ban.

Mark Hughes will check on Bojan (back) and Phil Bardsley (calf) ahead of the derby visit of West Brom, whilst Ryan Shawcross is expected to start despite picking up a head knock at Everton.

Fraizer Campbell is a doubt as managerless Palace travel to London neighbours QPR just 24 hours after the dismissal of Neil Warnock. The forward limped off just after the break in Friday’s home loss to Southampton.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is also unavailable after earning his fifth caution of the campaign in Gameweek 18, whilst Andy King has been ruled out with the knock that forced him off against Spurs.

Brad Jones is likely to miss Liverpool’s home clash with Swansea after being forced off with a thigh injury in the first-half of Friday’s win at Burnley. Simon Mignolet is set to return to the starting XI after being dropped due to poor form in recent weeks.

Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany could return for City’s home clash with Burnley, according to reports. The former has stepped up his recovery from another hamstring problem and was an unused sub in Friday’s win at West Brom.

Andrew Robertson is a doubt for Hull due to a hamstring problem. James Chester misses the visit of Leicester through suspension, whilst Jake Livermore returns after serving a similar one-match ban.

Carl Jenkinson is unavailable to face parent club Arsenal at Upton Park later today, whilst Sam Allardyce still has doubts over James Tomkins’ ongoing hamstring problem.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this morning’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

i dont think silvas point returns are sustainable, he had 1 chance created and 2 shots last game, wont get goal + assist from that again

Hes just not a natural finisher. Burnley are pretty tight. Expect City to win it quite comfortably, but i still dont buy the Silva hype. Feel like his owners have been paid extremely well for their troubles so far. But 3 goals, 1 assist and 6 bps in 2 games tells me im wrong, if u want to.

Yeah fair point but Burnley have been pretty woeful away and even with Jovetic back, I can see Silva remaining up front and profitable. Not saying Austin is a bad armband choice mind...

I couldn't decide so went with the bookies. Austin 55/1 for a hat-trick, Silva 16/1, so I'm going with Silva. Might not make much sense but better than a coin-flip I guess!

        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

yes good point, I looked at that for a brace same outcome, plus assists from silva is more likely
It's unusual for bookies to have a midfielder with higher chances of scoring over a striker
        Silva it is

Not long, good luck all. One quick question, really want to play Lampard over Kane? Madness?

    Adrian (McCarthy)
    Ivanovic, Caulker, Sakho (Chambers, Duff)
    Silva, Yaya, Hazard, Sanchez (Lampard)
    Costa, Austin, Kane

    2 FT used.

3 very good fixtures and should play 90 minutes in every game.

If he bombs its easy to get rid with the wildcard

Bench one of Azpli, Caulker, Hutton, Downing?

I think Azpli might be benched in real life so tempted to bench him, but it sounds quite risky too.

My point is , considering the threat of rotation, especially defenders this GW, it may be a bad choice to sacrifice a starter for a player who has only played 90 mins in the last 3 league games.

there's no reason to suggest Zabaleta doesn't play this week and many people have been holding Baines for far too long and are fed up..he's not even on all set pieces, Mirallas kills his forward potential (not that he did much when Mirallas was out anyways) and Everton are incredibly poor and have been looking likely to concede regularly..

all that vs City at home to Burnley? I know who I'd bet on..

Agree with most of your logic. I have Baines and I intend getting Zab. The difference is, I need 3 defenders to play. Taking Baines out this GW does not make too much sense/ Berty will be going and Baines will get me a few points.
Zab is still a gamble, I would have had him nailed on for Boxing Day, having been rested the game before.
Yes - I too am fed up with Baines

it's an unfortunate downside of FPL, that at a certain point your decisions, despite your best intentions, might not be grounded 100% in logic..obviously gut comes into play, but this frustrated mindset of "maybe it'll be this week" can only go on for so long..

that being said, watch it be this week ha

No transfer yet, fingers crossed that the FPL does not crash at 11:00am today. I want to see the Spurs line-up before delving into the market. By that time, we may also have some other news about who has and has not travelled etc.

Right, I've talked myself out of Hazard to Silva for a 2-week punt. Now, should I talk myself out of Hazard to Yaya (-4) for a 2-week punt? Yaya has four yellows, but I'd be going without any City attackers if I don't...

Crazy to take the punt or to go without City attackers? I look at Hazard's away form and I look at City's next two home fixtures and I don't feel totally crazy.

Worst case scenario = Yaya gets a yellow... Hazard is on pens and has been unlucky to score on the road on many occasions, I'd keep him and find another way to get Silva in. Its too late to get Yaya IMO.

I know you're right re: Yaya, but I'm not feeling the Silva love. Yet I'll be watching from behind the sofa without a City player! 😕
