Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Silva or Yaya for the armband is my only choice now.
Will Silva realistically score 4 GW's in a row? Will Jovetic play 90 and change Silva's and Yaya's attacking output?

Silva is playing well, I realistically see Yaya only scoring from a set piece.

Yeah of course... silly question but just rare is all.

More concerned with Jovetic changing Silva's position.

Not 100% sure of Lallana, one good goal, other was luck. Sterling could have easily had a hattie.

Yeah - totally agree. Sterling over Lallana.....only risk is threat of a rest to Sterling.... but maybe that comes in FA cup game.

    Where to use my 2FT's & .4

    A) Backline (Yun)

    B) RVP (to...Kane/Benteke?)

    C) Another Option

Any suggestions, not 100% sure of Benteke and Kane has CHE then 3 decent fixtures. Bony is gone on AFCON.

Not Benteke... Villa don't create enough.
Kane is on a roll..... and seems like a real player. Great price too 🙂

I'd stick with RVP until you wildcard

I would go for Carroll if I had to pick a striker to transfer in right now. Jovetic or Ings could work out too until the January wildcard.

West Ham score more, Downing heavily involved in their attacks, on almost all set pieces, has better strikers to aim for.

While I've got you here Walsh, care to give me a hand deciding who to replace Kelly with?
Have 5.5 to spend but really just need the defensive cover as Clyne is injured and Kelly dropped.

    Guzan
    Clyne - Azpilicueta - Zabaleta
    Hazard - Sanchez - Silva - Siggy
    Costa - Benteke - Austin

    Gilks -- Marney - Dummett - xxx

Cresswell seems the no brainer for me until the January wildcard. That would be my pick for the next four. I also disagree that you only need cover given Zab a rotation risk and some tough fixtures until the wildcard where you could choose either him against Everton or Cresswell against Swans and then bench Zab against Arsenal and Chelsea and start Cresswell for those two.

I don't think at the Liberty is a crap fixture. They look horrible. It is slim pickings fixture-wise for the next four. The only team I see having better fixtures is Burnley and if you want to go Trippier I could see a rationale behind it but I don't trust Burnley to keep a clean sheet against anyone compared to West Ham who are capable of properly bossing a game against lesser opposition.

This. I'm going for Adrian, main reason is I'm wildcarding in GW23 and the Hammers' fixtures until then are amazing.

Swansea at the liberty is a good fixture, they hardly score and won't have Bony then.

Food for thought, people say Siggy's ppg will diminish when Bony goes off to ACON, but I am pretty certain he will be on pens when Bony leaves since he takes them for Iceland.

All dead ball duties for 6.8 < is fantasy gold in a top ten 10 team.

Chances are that he might not even get a pen for the time Bony's out. Look at Baines for example, and Everton have player's like Mirallas who could easily win Pen's. But they haven't.

I am worried he might be rested. He is also over performing at the minute (fpl-wise). Its not like him to keep it up with the scoring as we have seen in previous seasons. I am leaning more towards Yaya who was rested and has penalties in his locker.

      good article Nick,

what I would be interested in - when do the fixtures turn for certain teams? I haven't got down to it yet but thats what I do usually - look for an upturn in fixtures for 3-4 teams and wildcard then. For example, I'll probably get both Clyne and Bertrand in end Jan since their fixtures ease up

Yeah, so it's actually GW21 that you're playing it in, we're in GW20 atm. The info on FPL is misleading and ambiguous imo...

Should it affect your descion when to play it if you havent used your first WC

The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (1 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (7 Feb 11:30).

Yeah but is it a good tactic to play your Jan WC earlier if you still have your other WC available?

          And from your blog:

When can i play my winter wildcard?

          GW 20 From 11.30 on January 1st
          GW 21 From 11.30 on January 10th
          GW 22 From 11.30 on January 17th
          GW 23 From 11.30 on January 31st

My point is that you can't play it in GW20, and you can play it in GW24.

I think its simpler just to put down the dates and the week as shown on fpl when looking at the fixtures, else it gets confusing

You can play ot once gw 20 kicks off whhich is all that matters, of course you are picking for the following week which is gw 21

If you stick a "for" in there it becomes easier to understand: 20 for 21, 21 for 22, 22 for 23, 23 for 24.
Maybe it doesn't become easier to understand actually....

        Good question

Hadnt thought of that one. It would certainly make an early jan wildcard less risky

Fpl itself makes it sound unclear, they say after gameweek 20 starts. By Fitzys definition it actually started on the 28th

Well, I think that's how we all look at things on here. This is GW20 as far as transfers, swapping the armband around etc goes. All changes to your team for a particular GW ends once lockout kicks in - sure, that GW hasn't 'started' in regard to the actual games, but it's no longer open to changing your squad, and then once updating is finished 30 min later, you can then get in and make changes to your team for the following GW. The first GW that you can actively use your WC is GW21 and the last is GW24. Simple huh? 😉

Who's going 2 score more points ? (money isn't problem)

    A) Guzan (CRY | lei | LIV)

    B) Heaton (newc | QPR | CPL)

    C) Courtois ( spurs | NEWC | swans)

    D) Mignolet (LEI | sun | villa)

    E) De GEA (stoke | saints | qpr)

I got Hutton / Zaba / Baines / Cresswell / Kola in defense

I'm staying with Heaton myself. Best fixtures for the next month, and he's always capable of racking up save points, even if he can't get a CS.

After yaya leaves for acon im thinking about going without city cover till aguero returns

Is it too dangerous? (City fixtures aren't great too)

Not at all. I'll be losing Yaya next week and probably Zabs on the wild card.

    Heaton
    Cresswell, Azpi, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Sterling
    Costa, Austin (c), Benteke

I'll live without City cover, right? Don't know if it's worth a hit to bring Silva or YYT now, run of good fixtures have pretty much passed and I'm saving to make the Kun swap more painless.

It's been a great run with Austin but I may move him out after NYD. He won't be part of my WC and Ings has better fixtures through till the end of Jan when I plan on playing my WC.

    Does this make sense?

Rooney. One of RVP, Falcao and Mata will have a rest tomorrow. Whatever happens it should boost Rooney's chances.
