Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        9 years, 5 months ago

        hey there Reedy.

But then A looks very tempting to me, becasue the quality/prospect of players I'm getting.. B is sensible though.

If I'm determined to get Haz, which one to lose, JT, Cesc or Costa?

        1. Reedy
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

Ah of course, all three Chelsea slots used. Chelsea's fixtures are middling so you could lose Terry but they'll still keep cleanies because they're Chelsea. I'd keep Cesc if you have him too. I know I'm pretty anti-Costa but I have to (again) recommend him for the chop.

    1. Somalion

      The fraction odds?

So 1/2 essentially returns the same as 1.5 in decimal. The fractions are referring to the profit on the bet placed, not including returning your initial stake. At least, that's my understanding.

    2. ralfb
      • 9 Years

According to wiki : In gambling, odds represent the ratio between the amounts staked by parties to a wager or bet.[3] Thus, odds of 6 to 1 mean the first party (normally a bookmaker) is staking six times the amount that the second party is. Thus, gambling odds of '6 to 1' mean that there are six possible outcomes in which the event will not take place to every one where it will. In other words, the probability that X will not happen is six times the probability that it will.

Sure dude. They are just fractions. Because the denominator varies they aren't always easy to compare at a glance. If you a divide the first number by the second you will get a uniform number less than one that allows you to compare simply.

Betting odds are not always an expression of likelihood though, as betting patterns dictate what odds are laid as well as the pure statistical analysis

      Adrian: WBA, swa, HULL
      Guzan: CRY, lei, LIV

Adrian's fixtures are all good (even Swansea away as they won't have Bony then and typically don't score a lot), Guzan's are decent but only see 1 CS there for them

    Hutton - Demichelis - Clichy
    Hazard - Sanchez - Eriksen - Silva
    Austin - Costa - Bony
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Hamer - Bruce - Bertrand - Marney
    -----------------------------------------------------

    Which one should I do?

    A) Eriksen ➡ Sterling/Lallana
    B) Eriksen ➡ Mata/ADM
    C) Save FT

Sakho, more nailed on at the moment with Skrtel suspended, Lovren injured and Kolo about to leave for ACON

    Simple question: Lallana or Sterling?

Nothing simple about it. Sterling probably the best punt but both risky given rotation

Pob's gotta phone Pardew to tell him to stay at The Mags. Unbeaten against him and hard to replace those guaranteed 6 points a season!

Ref had it in report. He couldn't have said he didn't see it. He was stuck in the middle of it. He cant be band once it's in the refs report b

With yaya fit, is it wise to off on transferring in silva so for one more week if not done already? Reckon he is due a rest or at least a 60th min sub especially with such an easy fixture.

Jovetic back too. Yaya may be the better option of the two this week.

Yeah I'd hold off now, Yaya looks primed and ready for a haul.

    forster - guzan
    chambers- hutton - n. taylor - azpi - dummett
    silva - fab - siggy - downing - sanchez
    austin - costa - giroud

    2 FT, 0.3 itb

Want to get in Sterling. Any thoughts on which midfielder to drop and who to replace Giroud with?

Maybe Giroud -> Kane and Siggy -> Stelring and play 3/5/2 and bench Kane.

But if he's predicted to play I could keep him one more week to save a FT
