Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

With 10 days before the next PL game I don't expect so, they can get the rest in the FA cup game.

So i was all set for Toure to Cazorla, people hanging onto him now that have him already seeming as though he'll play against Sunderland?

He tweeted that he was in fact rested for the Burnley game so almost a 100% start if that is true. And I would keep him for this week as his match up easily beats Cazorla but defiantly sell before next set of games if you don't sell this week

Baines in midfield or LB this weekend?

Really hoping he's in midfield, when he plays LB without Mirallas it is just as good but Mirallas has fully recovered it seems

Most worrying is that he seems to have given up all corners/free-kicks to anyone who fancies taking them.

He's not really attacked much at all recently sadly.

I've kept him mostly because of pens and other issues tbh.

Didn't get forward much more at CM than he did at LB.

Same, I was gonna get rid for Skrtel but he got his 5th yellow.

I think he did, I watched the first half and he was in and around the box for most of the attacks

I guess, but he never really got the ball in those areas.

Eto'o cutting inside from the left took all his space away.

Yeah I guess, but it's certainly better than him being a LB stuck on the half way line watching Mirallas hog the ball

    Foster (Given)
    Cahill - Zabaleta - Dummet (Jagielka, O'Shea)
    YYT (C) - Hazard - Milner - Siggy (Barkley)
Austin (VC) - Costa - Lukaku

    2 FT and 0.0 ITB

What transfer should i make in order to not waste the FT? Thanks 🙂

Many captaining Sanchez? With Giroud and Welbeck out think hes one of the best options.. Keep switching between him and Benteke..

Lots of peeps still selling Yaya but he'd be 1st or 2nd in captain's poll if he wasn't yellow flagged for being rested v Burnley.

Highly unlikely, WC now is knee jerk if you're struggling. Top 10k means - No need!

Looking to bring in Sterling for either Downing or Siggy.

Downing selling price is 6.3 and his current price is 6.4
Siggy selling price is 6.4 and his CP is 6.8

I will probably end up buying back whoemever I sell for Sterling once I need to make room for Aguero's return. Given all that, should I replace Downing with Sterling given the pricing?

Downing money wise is the best option. Could easily outscore Siggy though.

No. Sell the player you think will score fewest points.
