Versus – Eriksen, Cazorla and Oscar

With winter Wildcards in play, we turn our focus on three in-form midfielders in our second members article of the week. Christian Eriksen, Santi Cazorla and Oscar were all amongst the goals in Gameweek 22 and are more or less identically priced in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the former pair set you back 8.2, whilst the Chelsea man is slightly more expensive at 8.3.

With Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard looking nailed on for most Fantasy managers, the trio are vying for a spot as the third pricey midfielder in many plans right now. As more look to restructure their sides ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline in ten days’ time, we assess their recent matches and delve into the data over their last six appearances.

How nailed do you guys think Bellerin is? He looks like a steal at 4.4m, but he's not guaranteed a starting spot, especially with Chambers sniffing around and the potential arrival of Paulista.

For 4.4 he can be 4th or 5th Def though so who cares?

It matters. I'd say if he's your only punt at the back it's OK otherwise look elsewhere.

Of course it matters. If he doesn't start against Villa I might want to get Muniesa instead, same price and QPR at home, potential 6pts, compared to Bellerin's 0.

What needs to be done about this group? WC played and 1 transfer made:

    Forster - Heaton

    Lescott - Terry - Jones - Hutton - PVA

Fabregas - Di Maria - Hazard - Sanchez - Boyd

    Kane - Ings - Aguero

If it was me, I'd downgrade ADM to get Costa.

Other than that I'd save the FT.

      Lescott > Baird
      Forster > Pantilimon
Hutton > Duff (or someone chepaer), because his fixtures are bad

...and that would give you the money to do something better with the front 8, you'll always have to start one Burnley player if you plan to play with 3 defs.

Looks cool! Would be good with some additional summarising stats too, but I suppose there are plenty of other apps for that.

What sort of trends do you expect people will be able to see with this tool?

i'll definitely keep adding to it, had a request for average score for the top 10k to be graphed up top as well.

I think the main benefit is just seeing how players did before/after you traded them (especially the knee jerk trades that didnt pay off, or the early drops when you weren't patient enough). All in all though its not meant to provide much insight to the future (plenty of sites for that). This is just a way to view how every player you had did each week which can be fun to see.

haha, good point. I definitely thought about that scenario for a bit but struggled to find a clear way to visualize that and figured it was such an edge case that I wouldn't worry about it for now.

I guess a different color or something would work. Or maybe just make it flash, that would really add salt to the wound

once more since we're back and potentially have a new crowd..

assuming you do have 3 Arsenal:

    A) 3 attackers (Alexis & Caz & Giroo)
    B) 2 atackers and a defender (Alexis & Caz/Giroo & Bellerin/Kosc)

logic for B being that Arsenal might not always score a lot of goals but with those fixtures you'd bank on a handful of cleansheets to cover you

      • 9 Years

Definitely B for me here, Arsenal will be very tight. I see more value having the defender + 2 attackers then the all out attak approach. Especially if Belle nails the spot

    Select A or B

    A: Alderweireld + Hazard + Fabregas + Barnes(sub)
    B: Bertrand + Oscar + Albrighton (sub) + Costa

Alderweireld : For Southampton clean sheets when he is fit
Barnes and Boyd are gonna be subs in my first team
    Oscar : Enough playing time?

No form to speak of, is a donkey, etc.
I'd stay away Sinik. a punt too far, at least Giroud can finish his chances and plays for a team that creates more imo

    2. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

This is something I'm pondering as well. Pelle at 7.8 (when he falls) or Giroud at 8.2 when I already have Sanchez. On many counts Pelle's stats are as good as Girouds but his conversion % is not so good. Question is whether that's a statistical aberration that will rectify itself or whether Pelle is just a poor finisher.

History doesn't help much either because Pelle was prolific at Feyenoord last season but not such a heavy scorer before that.

Giroud is the safer bet. But I just have a feeling Pelle may get on a little run of goals. If I have Giroud it means Elia as my 4th midfielder for a few weeks. If I go for Pelle I can have Johnson.

I suspect I won't decide till the last moment on this one. It's about all I have left to figure out about my wildcard.

Surprised to see people really considering him given the form he's shown since his last goal scoring binge which was a couple of months ago. He really is a poor finisher as backed up by his conversion rates this season and by your eyeballs when you watch him play. I wouldn't even consider him over Giroud.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

I had him as captain in his 15 point week. One tends to remember things like that.

Also a very good friend of mine is an ardent Feyenoord fan and he has a very high regard for Pelle's abilities. Apparently he's one of those strikers that tends to score in streaks. Question is whether a streak is about to begin.

Like I said, Giroud is safer, no question. But I'm considering Pelle nevertheless and the fact that very few others are actually makes it more attractive, not less.

Fair enough, I guess. Watched a fair few Southampton games since I dropped him from mine own team and he's looked like rubbish in general 🙂 I'd rather react to a binge rather then try and preempt it with him.

I've actually warmed to him overall as a player but yes his finishing is rubbish, as I said early in the season amidst the wankfest.

I don't think anyone was really arguing that point he was just getting such a seemingly high volume of chances when they played all those poor teams he was in the middle of the points. I don't see the fixtures as kindly from that perspective from here on in.

I'm not sure. Depends how valuable the 0.4 difference is to you I guess.

I'm pretty settled with having Foster-Myhill and changing again with my last wildcard around GW 34. WBA have decent fixtures until then but their last 5 are pretty rough.

Thing is I'm quite content to play two Saints and two Baggies every GW until then so I'm not sure it's worth the worry. Toss in Myhill, one Chelsea defender and two cheapies and there you have it.

honestly, a keeper could randomly keep a CS in a 'tough' fixture just as easily as they concede a sloppy goal in an easy one...

only current benefit to rotating keeps IMO is potentially already having a DGW keeper locked away..

I've had similar thoughts, but I don't feel confident benching GK's like Panti from now on. Most of the value there comes from the possibility of averaging at least 4.0ppg from saves, more upside to just playing every game and minimizing the possibility of freak sheets.

Though the argument tends to sway in favor of increasing your chances of a DGW keeper.

      1. ILOVEBAPS
        • 12 Years

Perhaps when that time comes you will have the extra .4 or .5 to get a keeper with a DGW?

Yeah I really like it in general for the post-January for the DGW situations...but I am looking at just Foster/Myhill for now and maybe get a DGW guy later on. I was looking at Foster/Krul previously. I may end up doing that still but the extra .4 seems important.

    Christian Benteke:

Underlying stats are surprising - most touches in the box in previous 4 gameweeks and a fair amount of goal attempts. Anyone considering bringing him in as a potential differential to the standard Costa/Aguero/Kane? I think I can get him in for Kane.

He will probably play this weekend, his 1st start since injury.

Jose really likes Azpi and he's still 1st choice left back. But he is also the most easily rotatable. Mourinho could also rest Ivan and play Azpi right back with Luis on the left but he has only done that once all season.

Having said all that I'd be surprised if Azpi didn't start on the 31st.

There's no doubt Azpi is the best LB Chelski have. yehh unfortunately the rotation thing means that he is no longer a FPL option 🙁

Well there I disagree with you. I think Luis is the best LB Chelsea have and I have seen them both live quite a bit. Luis was considered the best LB in La Liga last season by quite a margin.

The 'natural' solution is Azpi RB and Luis LB. Luis is left footed and a great crosser. Costa scored quite a few from Luis' crosses last season. But Jose doesn't see it that way. He trusts Ivan and wants him at RB. End of story.

I rate Azpi hugely.......Id have him left-back over luis any day. The problem is Ivanovic, he s not really a full-back but ends up being very effective. Id like to see Cahill dropped more so Ivan can play CB + the two wing backs can play where theyre best

Can't help myself from looking at Walcott. Step too far? Feel like he will play their FA Cup game and then start against Villa to continue his reign. Is this wishful thinking or does this seem logical? Makes sense he was not given a start at City...but after the two sub appearances prior to that game surely it is time?

Thing is that 18 months ago Ozil and Sanchez weren't there and Walcott was an automatic choice if fit. Now he has much more competition and with Cazorla playing so well I don't think Walcott's game time will ever really be secure.

Walcott-Ozil-Sanchez might eventually turn out to be the preferred arrangement behind Giroud but that's a way away I think and even then there will be rotation, Oxlade and Cazorla will also get games.

By GW 24 when I plan to get him will be 4 weeks since his Everton sub appearance. Surely long enough to fully recover and regain fitness from a 4 week injury.... As long as something else doesn't break down

He doesn't have the best history of getting and staying fit in the first place though. He'll have to show it for me from here on. And he might. But considering the injury and his past injuries I reckon he'll be a hugely frustrating player to own while Bony will be the reliable workhorse with big haul potential.

Especially if Chelsea beat City in 10 days' time. Pellegrini's response will be to be very attacking, meaning a 4-4-2 in most games with Bony and Aguero most like. And whereas Bony can handle a lot of games, Aguero will probably be protected, especially around the 2 Barcelona CL fixtures.

There is a nagging feeling though that he is trolling us all during our WC's and that for the next few weeks he will do nought but get YC's and maybe a goal here and there, once again not justifying his £11m+ fee.

In that case I'd obviously switch to Wisdom(who I mentioned) or Lescott. Azpi will play for you lot, most games anyway. And Bellerin is a worthwhile punt right now. You're going well OTT here, unsurprisingly.

Problem is Wisdom offers nothing going forward. If not Baird I'm tempted to go with Lescott. 😡

RW is a problem. Not contributing enough in attack.
Even Terry has more goals in 5 months in League than Willian in last 2 seasons.

Yep, Willian is a great team player but doesn't contribute enough going forward. Cuadrado will change that.

I think it is an indictment against Salah that nobody's seen enough of him. Surely he hasn't earned minutes from what Mou has seen from him in training since he bought him.

He has played a few games but never impresses. Lightning quick but doesn't appear to have the football intelligence to fit in at Chelsea. He is still young though.

              Salah didn't take his chances.
It will be Salah and Schurrle will be our 2nd LW or will be used as sub mostly.

How's this for a WC team guys? Leaves £0.2m ITB.

    Begovic, Hamer

    Clichy, Chambers, Rose, Hutton, Baird

    Sanchez, Oscar, Silva, Tadic, Boyd

    Aguero, Costa, Kane

I really want to be able to afford Tadic as my 4th mid without disrupting my front line or downgrading Clichy.

    1. Aaron Ramessi - Straya

downgrade silva maybe and upgrade chambers to terry/ivan?

do you have your original wc up your sleeve? if not i don't think bego is great to hold onto for the rest of the season...

consider wisdom/wollschied over hutton maybe? 🙂

Thanks for feedback mate. Well actually if I downgrade Tadic to Elia I can then almost swap Baird for Cahill.

I don't want to lose Silva as one of my big hitters especially as Aguero is back.

No more WC left for me, who would you suggest over Bego?

Yeah I'll have a think about Wisdom/Wollschied, but don't want to double up on WBA defence really (already have Baird).

but WBA defence looks great value, and you can always bench them...chambers is far from nailed on, i would avoid him and get a Chelsea defender in by upgrading him...pantilimon and foster look good bets as single keepers or you can have a rotation going eg. panti and foster, panti and krul, panti and guzan, panti and heaton...in short you should get pantilimon 🙂

Very much like the idea of Panti who I hadn't considered before - thanks!

            How about this back line:

            Panti, Hamer

            Azpi, Clichy, PVA, Baird, Hutton

hmm pva is a good pick, and sunderland have great home fixtures so good rotation possible there...tbf to you on hutton he has good fixtures after the next two, didn't see that before...would really like it if you could squeeze out the cash for terry...im a big fan of clichy with his fixtures and baps potential. looks good 🙂

Cheers mate! I'm actually looking at Cahill because he's underperformed attacking wise compared to previous seasons, which makes me think he may grab a goal/assist or two over the rest of the season.

Sanchez v Villa at home. If the other 2 score they're bonus differential points coming in, too risky for captaincies imo.

For sure and you have BIG balls if you captain either of them.

I just feel Bojan and Defoe should be with Baines for now in the NBNC category (although I do captain Baines sometimes....).

same here. Haven't got him in the begining and thought he would stop at some point but he keeps on going.
