Captain Sensible – Gameweek 23

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader of this week’s poll as Arsenal prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Selected by 50%, the Chilean has produced returns in eight of his nine home starts this season and served up four double-figure hauls (13, 16, 10, 19) at the Emirates already – Villa have conceded in five of their last six road trips and look up against it here. This was, of course, prior to Arsene Wenger’s admission that the Chilean is a hamstring doubt for the weekend and will be assessed, forcing many to reconsider their selection.

Angel Di Maria (8%) and Wayne Rooney (4%) find a place in the top four for United’s home match with Leicester. Neither player has much form to shout about – the Argentine has just two assists in his last eight league appearances, whilst Rooney has blanked in five of his last six. The latter has, however, been consistent in front of his own fans and earned points in six of his eight Old Trafford appearances.

It’s fair to say that the vast majority – if not all – of Diego Costa’s votes were prior to news over the last day or two. Charged by the FA over his stamping incident with Emre Can, he has subsequently contested the decision and it won’t be until tomorrow before we know the outcome, with a ban still looking likely. Prior to all that, he was the Chelsea player of choice as the league leaders face champions City at the Bridge – over 5% opted for the Spain international, who is in the middle of a purple patch after racking up five goals and a pair of assists in the last five. Just 2% are favouring Eden Hazard after back-to-back blanks, though 3% reckon Sergio Aguero is worthy of our consideration against a defence that’s conceded just once in their last eight at Stamford Bridge.

Palace’s Dwight Gayle is also in contention. Selected by 3%, the budget striker has 24 points in two appearances under Alan Pardew and hosts an Everton side with a single clean sheet in the last 12 outings. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is backed by a similar number ahead of a tricky trip to West Brom – having scored in five of his last six on the road, though, the youngster looks the likeliest to breach the Baggies backline. Olivier Giroud has also been backed by 3% after scoring four times in his last five – if Sanchez is indeed ruled out, his output looks key for the Gunners.

Lets vote lads. How many games do we think Alexos will miss:
    A: 0
    B: 1-2
    C: 3-4
    D: 5 and more.

I vote for C, only because the next gw's r really close

Most probably will be a or b, I'm just always concerned from all the stats of players who have been out quite a bit longer at Arsenal than the rest of their career clubs due to injury.

      3 or 4 games, seriously!?

Wenger called it an 'uncertainty' and a 'concern' which will be 'decided on Saturday'. He 'might' be out. With such a close call, there's nothing to suggest he'll miss more than one game, if that.

    B. Costa + Tomkins(doubtful) > Giroud + Kosc (-4)

Another Mourinho masterclass at the weekend, or will the loss of Costa and potentially Fabregas prove too much of a blow to Chelsea's chances of extending their lead?

Without Costa & Fab, I expect Mou to focus on defense & depend on counters. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 0-0 or a 1-0 Chelsea win.

His Porto team was the worst I can remember for gamesmanship, time wasting and diving. And now he comes over to England trying to make himself part of the establishment saying 'we don't like diving in this country' while all the time encouraging his own players to dive.

His complaints about the ball boys in the loss against Newcastle is my favourite though, compared to the way Chelsea 'performed' at Anfield last season the Newcastle ball boys were going in fast forward.

Now he is appealing the most blatant stamp you could see.. He's actually going so far that it might have the opposite to desired effect on refs as everyone will stop taking him seriously.

People buying Elia. I'm not sure I understand. He has an awful goalscoring record, and he's not even nailed on is he? Can someone please explain?

I'm not buying him. But he had a good last GW and people chasing points

He scored a brace last gw and majority of people aren't on FFS. Fair enough..?

Can someone refresh my memory on Azpilicueta?

Was he injured against Swansea or was Luis preferred?

FFS has both Wally and Alexis starting. I miss the old days when they were more brave with predictions.

You want them to be brave for the sake of it instead of saying who they actually think will start?

Actually say who they think will start. I think chances of Alexis starting are below 10%

So it's Giroud instead of Pelle for most.

Southampton's fixtures as good as Arsenal's, and want both Cazorla and Sanchez over Giroud.

    Big punt to go Pelle?

Pretty minor issue with the costa & sanchez nonsense but:

    Cameron -> A) PVA
    B) Baird (already have wisdom)
    C) other ?

Team looks much more balanced without Costa but if Sturridge comes back with a bang I'm in trouble.

    Foster
    Clyne-Koscielny-Jones (Pva,Baird)
    Hazard-Sanchez-Sterling-Adm (Moses)
    Kane-Aguero-Giroud

This is where I'm at with my WC. I know most here won't agree with me opting for Oscar over Haz but I'm ok with it.

    Foster, Krul
    Terry, Koscielny, Fonte, Wollscheid, Pva
    Sanchez, Oscar, Eriksen, Puncheon, Boyd
    Aguero, Giroud, Falcao

Do people prefer Moses or Puncheon? Stokes fixtures probably edge it especially with a nice gw 27 fixture?

Think most people are going puncheon based on form, but moses + fixtures could be good differential
