It happens when your mind wakes up before your body. When your sleeping, your body puts itself into a paralysis to avoid you flailing your arms around and what not when dreaming. This is just you waking up before your body has 'turned on'

I had that once. Layed in bed, woke up and couldnt move and then suddenly i noticed this teenage mutant ninja turtle lookalike figure stood by my bedroom door. Weirdest thing ever lol

The best option might be to avoid them, despite the fixtures.
