Scout Report – Dame N’Doye

With his side having failed to score in 11 of their last 15 Premier League matches, Hull boss Steve Bruce was desperate to add some firepower in the January transfer window. Just minutes before the transfer deadline, the Tigers were able to secure the signing of Lokomotiv Moscow striker Dame N’Doye for a reported fee of £3m.

The 29-year-old Senegal international arrives at the KC on a two-and-a-half-year deal and his new manager is clearly delighted with the last-minute acquisition:

“He will undoubtedly strengthen our squad and add a significant goal threat. You don’t see much of the Russian league but I’ve seen Senegal play a few times. He’s been a member of their team for the last couple of years and for years I’ve taken notice of that Senegal team. I think a lot of managers have taken notice of the African teams. Out of all the players who have been imported, the African players have made a huge success of it. Physically, they have all the attributes to play in the Premier League. I’m delighted to have completed the signing of Dame and I’m looking forward to seeing him in action for us.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Thies, Senegal, N’Doye began his career in his homeland for Jeanne d’Arc in 2003, where he played for three seasons before signing for Qatari side Al-Sadd. A year later he moved to Portuguese team Academica de Coimbra, where he made 25 appearances, scoring four goals.

In the 2007/08 season, N’Doye plied his trade for Greek side Panathinaikos, netting three times in 23 appearances. The striker was then on the move again, scoring seven goals in 15 matches for OFI Crete before signing with Danish side FC Copenhagen in January 2009. The powerful forward enjoyed his most prolific spell in Denmark, scoring 82 goals in 150 appearances in all competitions. During the 2010/11 season, N’Doye scored twice in the Champions League group stage to help Copenhagen become the first Danish side to qualify for the last 16, where they were subsequently knocked out by Chelsea.

In the summer of 2012, N’Doye joined Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow, where he settled quickly, scoring seven goals in the 2012/13 season. During his time is Russia, he scored 27 goals in 68 appearances.

N’Doye made his debut for Senegal in a friendly against Gabon in November 2010 and has clocked up 34 caps for his country, scoring nine goals. He featured in all three of Senegal’s matches in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, but failed to find the back of the net.

THE PROSPECTS

Having scoured the transfer market for a striker, Bruce will no doubt be relieved to have brought N’Doye to the club. Club record signing Abel Hernandez has found it hard to adjust to English football and after scoring three times in his first five appearances, has failed to net since Gameweek 8. Fellow forward Nikica Jelavic has found the net six times, though like Hernandez, has struggled in recent months and scored just twice since Gameweek 7.

Given that Hull have only notched 21 times – the second-worst record in the top flight – it’s clear that Bruce needs to quickly address his side’s toils in the final third. The addition of N’Doye, who is known for his aerial ability, should allow Bruce to roll out a two-man frontline on a more regular basis, either in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2, with injuries all too often blighting his plans – the Hull manager has only been able to start Jelavic and Hernandez up front together on seven occasions.

Handed a sub appearance at the Etihad last Saturday, N’Doye could be in line to start tomorrow’s crucial home clash against Villa as Bruce looks to build on that morale-boosting draw at City. Indeed, that showdown with Paul Lambert’s side sparks the start of a superb run over the upcoming five (AVL, QPR, sto, SUN, lei), which could well define Hull’s season.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, N’Doye could become an interesting prospect if he can hit the ground running and take advantage of that schedule. Certainly, there are plenty of strong options in the budget forward bracket, with Harry Kane becoming a “must have” in most people’s 15-man squads and Jermain Defoe also staking a claim, but with Danny Ings’ fixtures taking a turn for the worse and Charlie Austin injured, N’Doye may be an outside bet as a cut-price alternative in our short-term plans.

I'd rate them like this according to appeal, Pelle being the worst pick here, followed by Silva and then Caz if he's benched in the end or is in doubt still with fatigue.

Your defense is fine though, don't even list that as an option right now IMO. Your two immediate concerns should be Pelle and Silva, that's it tbh (caz too if he's benched come line-up obviously), the former seriously limiting your potential for the third slot. Albeit, he does have fixtures to his name and has decent odds of scoring, he may be worth playing if you fancy the pure fixtures only. (he's still in the AdM realm of providing hope with great fixtures, but ultimately disappointing with poor showings).

Silva is the other concern, Pell opting for a 442 immediately hinder his influence on the game, so when Bony and YYT are back he'' be a real concern IMHO. So this little guy is major worry long term, so I would definitely keep and FT in the works to get rid of him soon. Pell may play 4231 nonetheless this week with Silva in the hole, so he's still a good option for this match.

I like B as I rate Defoe highly and his chances of scoring this GW. But if you're more of a fixture type of guy and be more at ease with 2 FT's in your pocket, you'll obviously be better off saving for sure, as you'll then have a better panorama of Silva's role with Bony and YYT in the squad, plus then Graziano will also have an ultimatum to his name and his appeal will be clear. You'll know what to do with both Silva and Pelle come Gw26 deadline, and it may not be Defoe who you fancy.

i stupidly got Silva in last week(for Adm) without even realising a 4-4-2 was a possibility.. wanna give him a decent run to pay me back though.
Pelle i'm sick of though.. Dont really like Sunderland's attack and their GW 27 fixture but he looks my only replacement sub 8. unless i free up cash for Giroud next week.
        Thanks though

Yeah Valar, I did that same thing sadly 🙁 Let's hope he proves us wrong as #10 though eh?

Giroud may be a decent option, if Arsenal do some damage here I could see why you'd fancy Giroud.. Albeit triple Arsenal attack isn't ideal tbh. If you're not 100% set of Defoe then save mate, I just rate his chances of scoring very highly and he's bang in-form.

Ok, something I've been wondering for a long time, I'm finally going to ask, hopefully there are some knowledgable folk out there.

If a player is taken out after getting a shot off at goal, a free kick or penalty is never given. Why?

Take Falcao's 1-1 miss against West Ham (not a great example but it'll do) he hit is shot wide, then trips over the keeper. If he was going around the keeper it would have been a penalty and probably a red card, but for some reason it's not if the player gets a shot away. Not only is it never given, but neither the players nor fans appeal. Everyone just seems to accept its not a penalty.

What is the rule (or interpretation of a rule) that I'm missing?

The penalty is usually given cause the defender/goalkeeper ended up stopping a goal scoring chance with the bad tackle.. if the shot is taken already then there's no need to give a foul

Perhaps the key is the intended movement of the players. The keeper has a right to move to a spot, if you will, and if the forward (in this case Falcao) is moving to same spot and they collide, it's basically a 50-50 honest play, especially once the ball is gone. If Falcao still had it on his feet and the keeper ran into him without touching the ball first, then it would be a foul/PK.

Yeah, but that would be inconsistent with a ruling if Falcao had tried to go around the keeper. Same situation, red card and penalty.

I was saying if the ball was still at his feet, so to speak...or basically still something he was dribbling, playing with....however you want to say it. Once the shot goes off, or the ball goes away from his general manipulation in any situation to where it's not "playable" anymore, then collisions are different than when player is still playing ball.

And, the keeper has a right to go after the ball when the play is coming to him. Contact happens in the sport, and usually you can tell when it is a foul or not. Basically, if Falcao still had general possession of the ball, then the keeper must play ball first if he is going to wipe him out or hamper him in any way with no foul or booking.

Thanks enlightener. Not sure how that translates to a situation where a player is taken out after hitting a long (or longer ball) though? You could say it's not at his feet etc, but I feel like a foul would always be given if it wasn't a shot.

If it's not a shot and Falcao doesn't kick it out of his reasonable area of play and the keeper takes him out, then yes, it is a pk. The whole thing I'm trying to explain is that it makes a huge difference if the ball is still in the immediate area and under a specific player's control. As long as ball is gone, two players who went for it where it used to be can typically get away with a lot of contact. Does that clarify it? I'm struggling a bit to put it into perfect words. 🙂

And, perhaps the same amount of contact outside of the box is more likely to be called a foul by the ref. To award a penalty takes a bit extra. It's a much bigger game changer than a free kick at the midfield line.

      Interesting post.

As long as you are playing the ball, (and actually get there) the amount of contact you can make on a player is up to the discretion of the ref. There is no fixed rules for this. Football is kinda outdated and a bit stubborn when it comes to changing or defining new rules. You will hardly ever see a ref call a foul based on the follow through of a defending player. This may be due to the ref keeping track of play (by looking at where the ball is after the incident)

      Hope that makes sense.

That's a great explanation, thanks Ruberx. FWIW, I don't think it should be a penalty, I just didn't know why it wasn't. Any thoughts as to why the ref allows much more contact if a shot is taken?

Just reread your answer Ruberx, you say "as long as you're playing the ball", in this instance the keeper didn't play the ball, he missed it completely and took out Falcao. Or did I misunderstand you?

Now I'm even more confused! 🙂

        1. The Enlightener
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

That's where ref discretion really comes into play. If it's something vicious looking and he really wallops him, then maybe a foul is called. But, as Ruberx was saying, contact happens, and as long as it's honest play it is usually ok. And, once the ball is shot, it is no longer under Falcao's "control." He has relinquished said control. And, this is huge...he is moving towards the keeper as well, so who's to say he shouldn't be called for a foul? You see how that kind of evens it up?

I dvr the game so I will have to look at the play again.

If he didn't play the ball and made contact, then yes it should definitely be a PK regardless if it was before or after. Problem is you will hardly ever see them given if it occurs after the player (in this case, Falcao) gives up the ball. Again, the inconsistency between refs prevails.

For the most part, goalkeepers get away with everything inside the box. They are also very protected against any contact from corners/set pieces and such.

Almost like a punter in (American) Football, where they are treated royalty and any contact is deemed a foul.

I certainly don't agree with it, and you can argue there should be set rules on this kind of stuff, but I'm afraid we are years away from that happening.

I first noticed it a couple of years ago, Tevez was 1 on 1 with the keeper had a shot and then was taken out. The ball hit the post and returned to the goal mouth where Tevez would have had an easy tap in but the defender got back and cleared it. I thought it was weird how no one appealed, not even the crowd. Ever since, I keep seeing it happen and no foul is awarded.

They sold Shaw lambert Lallana chambers Lovren and they don't have jrod.

6 key players aren't there and he replaced them with newcomers.

Shaw and Lallana were the only two real losses and Koeman had nothing to do with the Bertrand signing. Meanwhile he's after shite like Elia and Djuricic or whatever the feck his name is whilst selling Cork. Nutter.

It's about how they've done it. And while everyone is wanking over Koeman and "The Southampton way" it's actually Poch who's doing it that way rather than Koeman.

I don't know. They both have done pretty well, and it's hard for me to really argue one way or the other. If I had to say who has done a better job this season, however, I'd lean towards Koeman. But, maybe I'm a bit biased because way back in the 90s I studied abroad in Spain, and he was just such a great player who I really took a liking to.

Maybe some new aspects this time: http://spielverlagerung.com/2014/11/24/the-bulwark-of-the-saints/ 😉

But don't understand the elia transfer either... He must know something we don't.

Mane was a great move I think, great player if you looked at him in Salzburg. My personal prediction is that premier league will be impacted with fast pressing counter attacking FB like some teams perform in bundesliga. If saints go that way, he'd be perfect.

Loosing the head of scouting was the biggest loss till now I think. We'll see if they can replace him, they will try I guess.

I've planned terribly over the last month and have dropped some 11k spots because of it (now 17k). What move would you make here? I'm open to a hit but would rather not.

    Cahill, PvA, Wisdom (Aldy, Wasi)

Sterling's decision making in final third needs to improve. But he is still only 19, give the kids a break. Still plenty of time to develop. Both of them are playing at an exceptionally high level given their ages.

          • 12 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Not a knock on Sterling at all. I think they'll both be brilliant. The decision making/final product is the main reason I think Ibe will be the better player eventually. They're both lightning quick and surprisingly strong, but every time I've seen Ibe his shooting technique especially is far better than Sterling's.

But both are very young as you say, so should improve in leaps and bounds.

why is Herrera not getting a game? Really think LVG is the emperors new clothes. So uninterested in their players fantasy wise at the moment. Cant wait to shift ADM and think he is a great player just being wasted by a fool of a manager

Genuinely confused by it. Both Falcao and RVP have been poor but surely one of them up top with Rooney/Mata behind is better. LVG bottling the decision to drop one?

RvP, Falcao and Mata are the Holy Trinity of useless. The money paid to the three of them is laughable and what's worse they're pushing Rooney's massive wages into midfield. Carrick is still our only quality holding CM option while our best options at RB, CB and CAM can't get a game. It's a bloody shambles.

Questionable tactics all year from LVG. I'm running out of reasons why he would do such things.
I think he is looking for an ideal #10, a playmaker and hasn't be able to figure it out.
Its a bit late to try and transform Rooney/ADM into a #10 this late into their respective careers. Nothing irritates me more than managers sticking players out of their natural position.

I remember I got moved from centerback to defensive mid in college and eventhough I was just 10-20 yards higher up the pitch, I felt completely lost and took me over a year to adapt to the movements. Complete nightmare.

Understand the transformation point but surely right now Rooney can play that position? At least better than the center/Defensive mid position he is in now!

Mata? Perfect number 10. He has no balls to drop one of RVP or Falcao. He has all the players there he needs, just seem to insist on shoe horning them into an un workable formation

Yea I agree, Mata should be there solely because he is comfortable there.

A managers job is to get the most out of your players. I'm not sure if he is doing that by constantly changing things around. Sure, Rooney and ADM can play there, but they don't look nearly as comfortable. Those little things make a huge difference at that level.

Mata is one of our worst players. I'd rather see Valencia in midfield than him.

              Not saying he is better/worse.
I'm talking strictly about the #10 role which no one at ManU seems to be able to hold on to right now.

Much improved over the last few weeks -- Stones and McCarthy returning + Besic getting more run has done wonders, although it's come at the expense of our attack -- but they're still having too many brain farts to say they're "fixed." I wouldn't expect them to keep Chelsea out at the Bridge. I'd (c) an Arsenal attacker but I don't think Haz is a bad option at all.

Kind of stumped for what to do this week:

    DDG / Hamer
Sakho / Wasilewski / Hutton / Trippier / Van Aanholt
Sanchez / Hazard / Di Maria / Sterling / Carlos Sanchez
    Austin / Kane / Aguero

Thinking Austin and Sterling out, not sure who to bring in though. Exactly 1 in the bank.

Ha. I was going to post something about this the other day. About how I haven't hit the 80-point mark this season. So not used to that! Been a weird year all around.

My highest GW score was 78 (twice). My highest rank is what it is now. 165,480. Yeah. That's how I roll! 🙂

In my defense, my captains haven't done very well all season. Even though I am picking top notch players like Hazard and Aguero to wear the armband. That's been a huge reason why I've not cracked 100K. And, my huge penchant for taking hits.

Captain choices have been my Achilles heel this season too! I can't shake my ML rival off even though his team doesn't look great on paper, every week he seems to nail his captain....and I don't!

Seriously have only had three GWs where my captain has scored double regular points. And the were closer to 10 than 20. Usually, it's 5 points or less. I'm usually much better at picking them than that. And, if you check my history via my team link, you'll see just how much damage transfers have done me. So many minus points. Sometimes, like with the -12, the hits actually benefited me and I got more points than I would have without the hits. Many more times, however, not the case. Just can't help myself. Arghhh.

Last couple of seasons, I have looked at teams near the top and seen how few hits they take, so I made a conscious decision this year to hold back and only transfer when absolutely necessary, I have only taken 4 hits so far, and trust me, for me that is incredible 🙂
