Captain Sensible – Gameweek 26

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Eden Hazard (26%) leads the way in a closely-contested race this week. The Belgian has managed just two assists in his last four at Stamford Bridge but will fancy his chances of returning to form – visitors Burnley have conceded at least two goals in each of their last six road trips. With that in mind, it’s perhaps surprising that only 17% have opted for Diego Costa – the Spain international has found the net in eight of his nine home appearances so far.

Sergio Aguero is just behind Hazard on 25%. The City striker ended his goal drought with a brace against Stoke last time out and is expected to recover from a minor back problem to welcome Newcastle to the Etihad. With Yaya Toure back on board and Samir Nasri and David Silva both in form, the Argentine will be looking to improve upon a surprisingly poor home record – Aguero has found the net in just three of nine outings in front of his own fans.

Despite serving up five double-figure hauls in the last eight, Harry Kane is backed by only 11% of Fantasy managers as Spurs welcome West Ham to the Lane. Sam Allardyce’s side have managed a single away clean sheet all season and will struggle to keep their hosts at bay, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look for a morale boost prior to next weekend’s Capital One Cup final against Chelsea.

With that quartet hogging most of the votes, there are a number of differential candidates for those willing to gamble with the armband. Romelu Lukaku is backed by just under 4% at home to a Leicester defence that has shipped at least two goals in eight of their last nine road trips, whilst Arsenal trio Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud have been largely overlooked ahead of a visit to Palace.

I don't have an issue with it pre pen but soon as Balotelli scores Sturridge should be happy. The fact he's not shows why he's been moved on a few times

Stats suggest that Burnley are much more likely to concede to strikers than midfielders but also concede quite a few to defenders. If you want a Chelsea captain, Costa or Ivan may well be better bets than Eden.

I'd prefer Aguero to Kane myself. Aguero has 125% more shots per 90 minutes inside the box and 50% more shots per 90 overall. Kane has been scoring a lot of goals from distance and has had a phenomenal conversion rate. Don't get me wrong, he's very talented. But he can't keep that scoring rate up.

For me, Costa is the best captain this weekend, closely followed by Aguero. Ivan is a great differential punt.

For god's sake. Crying over penalties. Balotelli is a top penalty taker. Sturridge? His pen last year vs Everton landed in Goodison park.

Hendo is a competent penalty taker and if he was next in line he should have taken it. I'm a Liverpool fan and although Balo scored and he's a quality spot kick taker he needs to show more respect.

You should be glad Henderson played the captain's role and gave it to an excellent rather than competent penalty taker. I'd have been pissed off if I were a red to see anyone but Balo have taken that.

Agreed... Mario has a better penalty record than Gerrard but he doesn't show Gerrard that disrespect... I'm a HUGE Balotelli fan but if Henderson is the designated penalty taker and captain he should be respected, just as Gerrard would've been... And if he isn't respected and has Sturridge telling him what to do, then maybe he wasn't the best pick to be the next captain... The real issue though isn't who took the penalty away from who, it's why wasn't Balotelli the designated penalty taker in the first place

Presumably the list was for the starting line-up.

I find it bizarre that Henderson even considered taking it. Balotelli has an excellent penalty record, Surely he should be first choice if he's on the pitch (ahead of Stevie G even imo). It's like they deliberately don't want to build up his confidence

How do you know what Hendo's penalty taking ability is? Its one thing scoring in training but not the same in a match. Balotelli has a proven record in game situations, which is better than Gerrards.

I don't think anyone is questioning Balo's ability to take a PK.

The problem arises when he chooses to disregard team etiquette (the pecking order, which is earned in training) for his own glory. Just looks terrible to your teammates, which is not surprising given that it is Balo.

If Balo was the designated PK taker after Gerrard, there wouldn't have been any indecision, confusion or complaining. Clearly there was a misunderstanding, hence the controversy surrounding the players.

Hendo made a big deal out of everything trying to step up and be the man and has been lately etc since having a go at costa wks back. he needs to calm down and worry about playing well instead. rodgers is at fault for not making it clear.

"I enjoy playing with Mario. He's a great guy. I get along with him, and I feel we can have a successful partnership. It's down to the manager and who he selects. But from my point of view, I feel I can play with him or any player in the team because I get along with everybody.

Balo took the ball off Henderson and put it in the net

      Liverpool won 1-0

      Job done

      Either

      a) Hendo was supposed to take it, Balo took it off him causing great confusion and then Sturridge either got annoyed because Balo took it from Hendo or that he wasn't able to take it instead.

      or

      b) Hendo, as captain, told Balo to take it which kicked Sturridge off because he wanted to take it, which has happened before.

            c)
Liverpool bought one of the best PK takers in the world but would rather Henderson take them over him.

Absolutely. I'm baffled he isn't 1st choice. Then again, neither him nor Lambert are first choice when Stevie is on the pitch and I think that's wrong.

Sturridge was clearly just letting Henderson know that he(Henderson) was supposed to take it.

He was in a right sulk to be fair. Maybe it was just because of that, but you'll understand given previous situations where he has acted like that I'm probably slow to believe that was all it was.

I still think the most selfish example was when Drogba tried to take a penalty to boost his chances of winning the golden boot when Chelsea were only 1 - 0 up on the last day of the season . Was there ever a more selfish example than that ?

Just watched the 2nd half. What a complete overreaction by people on here regarding the penalty. I was expecting to see Danny fighting for the ball when I saw some of the comments on here. If there is any confusion or disagreement about who takes penalties , then that's Rodgers fault. He should have a set order of penalty takers.
