Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Sunday

Sunday’s events continue with both Merseyside teams in action as Everton host Leicester City at Goodison and Liverpool make the testing trip to the south coast to take on Southampton.

It’s four home matches without a win for Everton as they host Nigel Pearson’s Foxes – a team that have lost four on the bounce going into today’s meeting. Leighton Baines, who’d notched assists in two of his last five appearances before succumbing to injury, is back in contention after being passed fit by Roberto Martinez on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku has registered a solitary goal in the past 11 Gameweeks, but heads into this fixture with momentum, having recorded his first hat-trick for the Toffees in their midweek Europa tie. Likewise, the Belgian’s opposite number, Andrej Kramaric, arrives in fine fettle having netted in the Leicester’s past two matches in all competitions.

Gameweek 26 concludes with a clash between Champions League hopefuls Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium, as Brendan Rodgers’ unit attempt to extend their unbeaten run to 10 league matches. Daniel Sturridge has delivered a goal and two assists in three appearances since recovering from injury, whilst fit-again Raheem Sterling has notched two goals and assists in his previous six league matches. The Reds face a tough task in breaching a Saints backline that has served up a clean sheet in eight of their 13 St Mary’s matches, though, whilst Ronald Koeman will be desperate for Graziano Pelle to get amongst the goals to end an eight-match barren run.

yes. what is more intriguing is how could Elia possibly have benched today both Mane and Tadic. I'd play mane ahead of Elia any day.

If Liverpool get Champions League I will be very disappointed. They didn't represent England well this year and will do similar next year without big changes. As a fan of a Championship club, so somewhat of a neutral, I want the four best English teams in the top four.

Well I guess it should be whoever finishes in the top four after 38 games! But I'm not sure Southampton or Liverpool will give many of Europe's best a good game? I would have to say Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Man United (although not at the moment, more with anticipated signings/tactical improvements from LVG).

Admittedly I'm picking them as my best of the rest, and it relies heavily on them improving. I'd have thought with their resources they can't fail to improve. See below though on how I'm not sure there is a 'real' good 4th place contender atm.

Don't get me wrong, there aren't many better ways of deciding the four best than having them all play 38 games over a 10 month period. However, there are always anomalies and I feel that England is beginning to lack a consistently 'good' fourth placed team, which weakens the English attempts on the Champions League.

I'm not sure how the best domestic English clubs perform has all that much to do with the English side. Obviously it is an influence, but in the end how many English players do the top 4 or so actually play week-in week-out.

England's fourth placed team is probably better than Germany's (on average), but Bayern (and Dortmund on occasion) are so much better than ours it weights it in their favour. And in the end, I'm concerned over English prospects, not German. Irregardless of how the top four of other nations perform, I'd like a strong English top four.

If it wasn't for Chelsea there wouldn't even be 4 CL places for the PL.

The club they all seem to hate has been keeping the PL coefficient up almost single handedly.

Incidentally, Liverpool are ranked the 40th best club in Europe, just between Anderlecht and AZ Alkmaar. Which sums up their level really.

With the upcoming changes to UEFA coefficients that might change in the next few seasons anyway. At the end of the day, you want your four (or however many) strongest teams competing in the Champions League.

Disclaimer: Obviously this is in regards to getting more English winners of the Champions League. In terms of competition within the Premier League you probably want the opposite! The more rotation in and out of the top four, the more competitive the league probably becomes.

        Cleansheets lately:

sun, avl, WHM, eve, sou (if it holds)>

        That's not 'very easy fixtures'

All of those teams have been pretty impotent in front of goal lately. Maybe not very easy but I wouldn't say they were too difficult either.

City, Utd, Arsenal in the next five, and Chelsea still to play. I wouldn't bother with their defence.

Pick defence based on fixtures unless they're managed by Mourinho.

Thinking of taking a hit to get Di Maria in for Hazard so that I can get a full team for next gw. Worth? Intending to get Hazard back in for free 2 gws later.

You got to hold and give and do it at the right time, you can be slow or fast but you must get to the line
