Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Sunday

Sunday’s events continue with both Merseyside teams in action as Everton host Leicester City at Goodison and Liverpool make the testing trip to the south coast to take on Southampton.

It’s four home matches without a win for Everton as they host Nigel Pearson’s Foxes – a team that have lost four on the bounce going into today’s meeting. Leighton Baines, who’d notched assists in two of his last five appearances before succumbing to injury, is back in contention after being passed fit by Roberto Martinez on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku has registered a solitary goal in the past 11 Gameweeks, but heads into this fixture with momentum, having recorded his first hat-trick for the Toffees in their midweek Europa tie. Likewise, the Belgian’s opposite number, Andrej Kramaric, arrives in fine fettle having netted in the Leicester’s past two matches in all competitions.

Gameweek 26 concludes with a clash between Champions League hopefuls Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium, as Brendan Rodgers’ unit attempt to extend their unbeaten run to 10 league matches. Daniel Sturridge has delivered a goal and two assists in three appearances since recovering from injury, whilst fit-again Raheem Sterling has notched two goals and assists in his previous six league matches. The Reds face a tough task in breaching a Saints backline that has served up a clean sheet in eight of their 13 St Mary’s matches, though, whilst Ronald Koeman will be desperate for Graziano Pelle to get amongst the goals to end an eight-match barren run.

    @Sechwa

You claim Liverpool don't represent England well but how about Arsenal who you claim should be there? They have qualified for the Champion's League 18 years in a row (I believe) and haven't come close to winning it at all.

Can't deny Man United are making it very hard work, but I feel the only way is up. They are probably the most reputable club in England (and top 3 in the world?), with a huge transfer kitty and a (supposedly) very astute manager. I think they will eventually get back to consistent title challenges.

I am very happy to be proven wrong. I'm not massively concerned over who the top four, just that they are the Premier League's strongest representatives.

On the flip-side, I'd love Southampton to get Champions League for completely different reasons. Towards the end of the post on the last page I was saying how in terms of English Champions League prospects a consistent top four of the 'best' clubs is probably desirable, however for a competitive Premier League season the opposite is probably true. Southampton fall into this latter part.

For the record, this was not an anti-Liverpool driven post. Last season I was probably cheering them on more than any other team. It seemed as if they were the only team actually trying (obviously not literally, you not what I mean here) to win the title. This season however they are a completely different prospect, and that is reflected in both their Champions League performance and their Premier League standing.

I just think it should all be based on merit. If Liverpool get Top 4 considering all the competitions they are in this year it will be impressive than getting second with Suarez.

Yes, it looked bad but Barnes clearly got to the ball first, Matic was late and got caught by Barnes in the process.

Barnes kicked the ball, and on the follow through caught Matic. It could have caused injury, but that doesn't mean it's a foul.

If someone heads the ball, and then heads the back of someones head in the process, it could cause injury, but it isn't a foul.

These things happen, and in F1 would be described as a racing incident.

I happen to agree with you. He didn't launch into a 2 footed tackle, he swung for the ball caught some of it and was unlucky to catch Matic when his foot was planted.

A couple of high-profile dives will do that to a team, I'm afraid. It's a bit self-inflicted. If you're known as a team that tries to stay on its feet you'll get more decisions go your way when you are truly fouled.

Stats show the 2nd and 4th games of new managers in charge usually produce the best results, expect Villa to score

Any thoughts on which Spurs players will be likely to play in both games during their DGW?
My thoughts were Kane and Erikson, however my mind isn't made up on Erikson due to him coming on off the bench.

I might go for Kane, Eriksen and Rose.

Agreed, however part of me thinks Rose may be rested for one of them, perhaps Vertonghen purely for the chance of starting both.

Dang. If Mane had stayed on the bench would've ended the GW on 77. Ah well... onwards and upwards.
