The Digest – Gameweek 28

We take a final glance back at the previous round of fixtures this evening, with Liverpool’s in-form midfielder, the Potters’ 2015 displays and the shedding of our double Gameweek assets our main points of note.

The Player

A goal and assist at home to Burnley saw Jordan Henderson net in back-to-back league encounters for the first time this season as the Reds finally broke down their visitors’ resilience to extend their unbeaten league run to 12 matches.

As the Merseysiders prepare for life without Steven Gerrard, Henderson is not just looking like a suitable replacement for the departing skipper, he is also staking a claim as a viable Fantasy option in a midfield that also contains Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. For all the plaudits heaped on the little Brazilian, he currently sits 22 points behind Henderson in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, whilst Sterling is only ten ahead (130 points to 120) despite a number of appearances up top in recent matches.

Now up to ninth amongst midfielders – and four points behind Cesc Fabregas, for example – Henderson’s midweek tally means he has now equaled last term’s four goals, whilst his total of eight assists is his highest ever top-flight haul. Throw in 18 bonus points and, with ten league matches remaining, he is just 13 points away from matching his best ever FPL season.

At a price of just 6.3 compared to the costlier Sterling (8.5) and Coutinho (7.9), Henderson continues to look a real bargain as Brendan Rodgers’ side close in on another top four finish. Already, over 60,000 FPL managers have drafted him in since the previous Gameweek – head and shoulders above any other player – and with Swansea, Newcastle, Hull and West Brom in the next six, the stage is set for Henderson to flourish further as the Reds brace themselves for their captain’s summer exit.

The Team

It’s fair to say that, so far, this calendar year has been kind to Stoke City. A win over Everton was the Potters’ third successive league victory – the first time this term they have achieved such a feat – and means they have taken 17 points since the turn of the year, a tally bettered only by Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Now sitting in eighth position, Stoke’s recent run has been all the more impressive given that Mark Hughes has been deprived of skipper Ryan Shawcross and playmaker Bojan through injury, with their strength in depth proving crucial to the Staffordshire outfit’s success.

In spite of a number of players being sidelined, Hughes’ troops have conceded just once in the last three, with Marc Wilson (4.3) grabbing his chance to impress at the back as Phillip Wollscheid joins Shawcross on the treatment table. Whilst Peter Crouch (three goals in four) and Mame Biram Diouf (two in three) have also picked up the points, Hughes’ tendency to manage the pair’s minutes deprive us of a valid option for our three-man frontlines.

In midfield, though, Victor Moses (5.2) and Jon Walters (5.4) have chipped in with two and three goals respectively since the turn of the year and offer a greater security of pitch time that may well convince some on the lookout for a budget option in the centre of the park. Having missed nine Gameweeks through injury, Moses remains off the radar in spite of some consistent displays under Hughes – the winger has now earned points in seven of his last 15 appearances since rolling up on loan.

Next up for Stoke are showdowns with West Brom, Palace, West Ham and Sunderland in the next six Gameweeks. Having already beaten the likes of City, Arsenal and Spurs this season, Hughes’ men will hold little fear over the remaining Gameweeks and whilst their appeal may be a little limited at a time where double Gameweek targets will soon play a part, it’s clear that Stoke’s main men shouldn’t be written off completely.

The Talking Point

Harry Kane aside, the double Gameweek was something of a letdown for the most sought-after players. Snapped up by over 157,00 FPL managers, Charlie Austin found the net with just one of his 15 attempts. Christian Eriksen’s new owners (205,000) were treated to an assist, whilst Danny Rose (153,000) picked up eight points at home to Swansea before warming the bench at QPR last Saturday.

Certainly, Kane’s imperious form and outstanding value will ensure he remains very much a part of our plans but many Fantasy managers will perhaps be plotting an exit route for their double Gameweek 28 purchases.

With slots in our three-man frontlines at a premium, Austin looks the most likely candidate for a speedy departure – the R’s striker has scored ten of his 15 league goals at Loftus Road but now has just four home matches remaining now. A (yet-to-be-confirmed) blank Gameweek 33 in addition to showdowns against Chelsea, Liverpool and City between Gameweeks 32-36 will surely spark an exodus, though Austin may well be handed a double in Gameweek 34 to keep him on our radars.

There’s no denying Eriksen’s threat in midfield – he has, after all, fired more attempts than any other player in the centre of the park. With returns in only three of his last ten appearances, the Dane is struggling to convert his excellent underlying stats into Fantasy points, though with Leicester, Burnley and Villa in the next four, retaining Eriksen still looks a valid short-term option. For those looking to part company, though, the likes of Jason Puncheon, Gylfi Sigurdsson, David Silva and Eden Hazard have all been in the points of late and have the fixtures to offer a quick getaway.

Rose certainly looks the most immediately dispensable. With a single clean sheet in nine, Tottenham’s resilience is far from dependable and whilst the left-back has delivered two goals and as many assists in his previous eight, relying on attacking returns looks a risky tactic.

With Chelsea and Leicester already confirmed for double Gameweek 34 and the likes of Villa, QPR, Liverpool and United or Arsenal also in with a chance of two fixtures over that period, there’s no shortage of options to plan ahead for as we look to restructure our squads for the final few fixtures.

..less yards out and 1v1 and even then.. I think he could get you an assist or two depending on if Studge is in the mood but Coutinho looks the hot commodity right now..he's Liverpool's creativity right now..I wouldn't mind having Sterling but I'd be scared to captain with other options looming when captaining any Liverpool player could be deemed a punt given they're away to a hot/cold Swansea and they just looked relatively mediocre vs Blackburn..you're effectively banking on an immediate 180 AND Sterling to lace up his shooting boots

Yep, probably too much of an asking from him (goal-scoring wise), since he's got Coutinho besides him who really looks good atm. Damn, I think I made the wrong decision when I opted for him instead of Cout in DGW28, just because i think I'm sorta leading the pack 🙁

Nway, agree with you that Silva and Haz are good captain picks this week, could be well over Raheem.

Looking towards the potential double GW34 it seems I/ some of us have one really important decision to make.

Terry and Hazard plus Costa or Ivan?

Had my mind set on Costa but with Ivan you can still Have Aguero Giroud Kane.

Guess it comes down, for me, to

Kane and Ivan plus some cash
    vs
    Costa Hadria and no cash

    Ivan seems the way right?

exactly the same conundrum. Must the hot topic right until DGW34.

Leaning towards Ivan atm since Ivan + JT + SOT + 2 good cheapos look doable, but then not owning Costa on a plum DGW could be suicidal.

Ivan for me. Chelsea unlikely to go on a rampage at this stage of the season.

Standard 1-0/2-0 Mourinho wins from here on out. Considering Costa hates the baps...i'd save 3 million and spend elsewhere.

😆 it's one thing getting Austin in place for Defoe, Ings etc. But another to get rid of the likes of Giroud/Kane for Austin. Either option will outscore Austin until the end of the season.

Without a WC, it's foolish to make that swap.

Now just have to figure out a viable plan to get rid of Panti/Giroud/Sanchez/Cazorla/PVA by GW33 to have a strong 11 then! Thankfully not too much value tied up there.

Hmm, just had some time. Had a quick look and I could get the following for free. Enough punts that week considering most without WC will really be struggling to put out a strong 11.

                        Speroni
                        Ivan Naughton Clyne
                        Siggy Hazard Eriksen Silva
                        Lukaku Aguero Kane

I'd be pretty happy with that. bound to change though.

see absolutely no reason why not. The battle for CL spots will be tight. Giroud will start both - Wenger trusts him in the league. Arsenal will be out of the CL by then too.

Are those in Caps are certain DGWers? If yes, then it's a tremendous team! Only minor issue is you're benching Alder (TOT), which is okayish indeed.

Not too sure about Siggy nowadays, even though I have him in my username 😆

What's the look of the team if you go Costa way?

Why siggy? You already own him? Remember he still got ars & MCI to play. I'd rather own Hendo at that price - yep I said it.

Costa is such a pain here - I wish he doesn't exist in FPL 😆

Think the advantage for you is actually GW 33.

I will be limping a team through that week whereas you can plan to be strong for that week.

As seen in chat today, even non WC holders can get a good 8/9 DGW players in 34 with some planning

No no, i mean over the next few weeks your sole aim can be putting out good teams and effectively ignoring the 34 double. We non wc holders will be struggling to get 11 out in 33.

You can just make plans all the way to 33. Then wc 34 and bring in who you like

Hmm... that's one way to play it. I'm also thinking this way - since most people can get a good 8/9 DGW players with some planning (lke you said), the WC can be used to clear all desired DGWers, especially when teams like SUN and LIv still have some tricky fixtures ahead. But hey, maybe that's too bold, and a waste for a WC that lasts for only 4 GWs.

Not too bad. That DGW def could be Lovern, or Moreno, or even Bellerin.

Losing Giroud is another factor to consider - could be disastrous as I rate his potential as the same with Costa.

Well, thats something different. Since I like attacking defenders, will be getting him. Lets see when...

Ivan loves DGW - but I agree it's still early.

so Nabil, if planning to make just one transfer this week...which would you prefer? Thinking getting Silva and Ivan in...current mids are Sanchez/Caz/Hazard/Eriksen. Appreciate your opinion as always.

        A)
        GW29: Bertrand > Ivan
        GW30: Caz eriksen > siggy silva (-4)

        B)
        GW29: Caz > Silva
        GW30: Eriksen Bertrand > siggy Ivan (-4)

        C)
        GW29: Bertrand > Ivan free
GW30: Caz > Siggy for free, forget about Silva

I like B. Wouldn't rush to sell Erik though, will wait and see for him.

I don't think you need to take a hit to get a good team prior to DGW34 WC.. I might be wrong.

Yea, don't think I need to take a hit, but it's a matter of timing with Ivanovic especially - don't want to miss his inevitable big score.

Just wonder who is more impt to get in

I'm bringing him in to double up with Terry, this week looks like a typical 1 or 2 nil which i'll take.

Also soton's fullbacks overlap a lot which may leave space in behind for ivan and azpi

I have 4.6 itb in which I was going to upgrade Austin to Costa. Would I be better off selling Haidara for Ivan?

Defence this week is Clyne, Bertrand, PVA, Naughton, Haidara.

I have no other issues so I could even potentially save, thoughts?
