Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 29

With only a handful of sides involved in Premier League and FA Cup action since our last update, there’s been little movement among those players toeing the line on the Suspension Tightrope. It’s as you were at the summit, with Neil Taylor, Phil Bardsley, Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Sebastian Larsson teetering just one booking away from a two-match suspension.

By virtue of Gabriel Agbonlahor’s caution in Aston Villa’s Fa Cup win over rivals West Brom, the Villains are now the most represented club in the eight-yellows-or-above bracket – a cause for concern for manager Tim Sherwood, who’s already contending with a raft of injuries and suspensions.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo picked up his fourth caution in seven starts against Newcastle, moving up to the eight-yellow mark. The Red Devils can ill afford to lose another member of their rearguard in the wake of Jonny Evans’ suspension, so the Argentine will have to stay out of trouble for four Gameweeks before the slate is wiped clean on 14 April.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Jack Grealish misses Villa’s Gameweek 29 encounter against Sunderland after he picked up two quick yellows as a late substitute against West Brom. Meanwhile, Baggies midfielder Claudio Yacob committed two bookable offences in the same match but was handed a two-game suspension due to it being his second red card of the season – the 27-year-old was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Angel Di Maria earned a red card at a particularly inopportune moment, just before Manchester United embark on an unforgiving fun of fixtures (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che) that could define their fight for a Champions League berth. The Argentine winger will sit out United’s home tie against Tottenham on Saturday following the ignominy of being booked for simulation and aggressive behaviour towards referee Michael Oliver in the space of 20 seconds.

Jonny Evans began his six-match ban after being charged with spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse. United’s FA Cup exit against Arsenal on Monday means Evans will now be unavailable until the Gameweek 34 encounter with Everton. For his part in the incident, Cisse received a seven-match ban, with the additional penalty a product of receiving red for elbowing Everton’s Seamus Coleman in December. The Toon frontman will be back in contention for West Brom’s visit to St James’ Park in Gameweek 36.

Joey Barton serves the last of a three-match ban as QPR roll up to Palace this Saturday, whilst Alan Hutton sits out the second of a two-match suspension as Villa make their way to Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole start the first of their two-match suspensions after topping off the Tightrope and Palace’s Mile Jedinak sits out the second of a four-match ban for violent conduct. Sunderland winger Adam Johnson remains suspended by the club pending the outcome of police investigations relating to off-field matters.

Amongst those returning players, Glenn Murray, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano are all back in contention for Gameweek 29, having served their time. Matic twisted his knee celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup triumph but recovered in time to face Paris Saint-German in the Champions League last 16 this evening.

    Morning all,

Currently 30 mins in to a 3 hour coach journey 🙁

do share with us andy... im debating whether to play a southampton defender away to chelsea or bring someone in for Hutton/Keane.. leaning towards the latter with a WBA defender being the likely target.. already have foster though and worried the 2 villa losses woulda hurt em

I'm looking at wollscheid to Ivanovic this week.

Even if I make that transfer I'll have to play Rose against United or Clyne against Chelsea.

Currently going with Rose because I'm going to be at old Trafford.

I'd only make your transfer if it's a decent long term pick. No point getting in someone just so you don't have to play a Southampton defender if you're then just going to bench them every week. Southampton have decent fixtures from next week. Can't have perfect ones every week unfortunately 🙂

I don't understand what people are referring to when they say Chelsea cheating in yesterday's game. Being too defensive is not cheating. Being too physical isn't cheating either its part of the game and they get YCs for it so they pay the price. I saw no dives. Ibra's red was not their fault. Costa's being a hotheaded thug is not part of their game plan it is just his nature and it is Mourinho's fault if he can't control him because it has cost him before and will continue to do so. But it is not cheating. Costa not being sent off when he should have been is the referee's fault.

Cheating is when you try to trick the officials in some way and I didn't see that yesterday. You can hate Chelsea's style all you want but you can't say it is cheating. Barca for all their attractive style do more cheating by diving, influencing officials, play acting etc. Too much hate on here.

Costa pushed someone right over when the ref wasn't looking. Hardly the refs fault.

The surrounding of the ref is so frustrating but Chelsea aren't the only ones doing it

Costa didn't know the ref wasn't looking. For all he knows any one of the officials could have seen him and sent him off. He doesn't plan it he is just stupid. The surrounding of the ref is practiced by everyone and in more excessive ways. I didn't see much of it from Chelsea yesterday.

The push was a gentle push away and the PSG player exaggerated it.

The Oscar incident was dangerous and he could have been badly hurt. Ibra was late. Shouldn't have been red though, Ibra tried to pull out and it wasn't malicious.

Morning folks, on the early commute once again, could do with afew more opinions on what to with my team this week:

    A: Kosc + Punch ---> £4.5m + Silva (-4 hit)
B: Save FT. Go without Silva vs Burnley away and Do the above for free next GW

-Was thinking of dropping Eriksen for Silva but I think he is worth keeping

Why not Silvs instead of Aguero this week as captain? Silva in much better form and Kun suffering from playing with a second striker

It's a good shout but I'll never choose silva ahead of Aguero when I have both in my team. Always feel there's more potential for Aguero to score higher. Whether it's right or wrong I don't know, just a psychological thing maybe.

      1. Crystal
        • 10 Years

I'm suffering from the same but think it's based on previous form and not current form, plus everyone is captaining him

Even in current form I still don't have confidence in silva as a captain choice.

That's because Aguero's a striker. They are always more likely to score than the mids.

Yep and you could apply the same rule to Haz over Costa and Sanchez over Giroud

For captain I would almost always go

            Aguero > silva
            Sanchez > Giroud
Hazard > Costa (this is a tough one though)

          2. Miro
            • 13 Years

You could, Costa has 7 more goals than Haz, and if Giroud wasn't injured half the season he would have more than Sanchez too. One thing is scoring goals, other FPL points though.

      Agree with Andy

It's the potential of an explosion of points with Aguero that puts me off (C) Silva over Kun.

Playing both IVANOVIC & TERRY.....but really want to punt on ROSE whom i have on bench(espicially for his attacking returns and maybe because i think it will be a 0-0 as it was the previous time).
So what should i do?.. 🙁

I'm assuming most of us want to finish as high as possible but that's not the same thing as caring bout rank.

Winning mini leagues much more important to me it's just that obviously the higher my OR the better my chance of winning them. Unless I'm in with a realistic chance of winning the whole (not happened yet 🙂 ) then I don't care whether I finish 1000th or 100,000th as long as I top my mini leagues.

My point is do you try to protect your rank if it's decent or take risk to finish high as possible fully aware that you could easily lose ground to, for example, Aguero captainers this week. Personally I find the latter a much more exciting way to play the game but each to their own.

Love going against crowd, exciting! If I can find a player who is capable to outscore a popular/templatish player, I'll go for it... If it works, 😎 otherwise 😀

I'm with you on this one (with regards to taking risks). I'm a gambler, and i'm winning my mini league, so should be able to sit on a template and hold out til the end, whilst probably climbing a few hundred rank positions.

It's much more fun to gamble to try and get clear of my mini league rival. Might even jump a few thousand rank positions while you're at it (i guess that part of my answer shows i care a bit about rank after all)

      1. Rhinos
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Yep and I don't mind if my rivals catch a bit coz
        a) makes the mini leagues bit more exciting
        b) do sometimes worry if I keep walking away with it whether they'll keep playing

    3. HVT

Not really taking risks all season has me with a decent rank,
Rank is important to me, generally speaking
Good rank=winning minis so doing the sensible things when you need to is important.
For anyone that's been in the top10k for a while will tell you by playing it safe most weeks you will maintain your rank, getting players in early and (c) them say Aguero/Silva can work both ways that's where I gamble.
On the opposite hand I ignored Wallcott and went Silva these subtle moves are the ones that can change your rank.
You don't have to go gun-ho, inch by inch works best for me.

      1. Rhinos
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

My point is not to care what the top 10k are doing and just do what you think could work. For example I'm captaining Ivan coz Saints have been woeful up front and Chelsea defenders seem to score more often than most strikers.
Were I a rank slave I'd cap kun

I'm going Aguero(c) at the moment because I think he will score the most points this week in my team, I like your Ivan choice Rhino.
I wouldn't say I follow the crowd, I try to be the trend setter if at all possible, but unfortunately around the top 10k orso you find most are there end up thinking the same and fielding close on the same team.

Agree, kept it pretty steady this year, about 6 points hits. Sat round 880 OR. No need to go for massive punts unless chasing a mini league leader

As you know it's all about mini leagues for me.

First year I won comfortably with a rank of 15k~ and this year I'm struggling to stay ahead at 7k~. I know which I'd prefer.

As for protecting rank I just try to pick who I think will score well regardless of rivals. I'll only start going different if I really need to to catch someone up in a mini league.

For as long as I'm leading I won't purposely go for differentials to increase rank unless I was in with a chance of winning the entire thing.

Maybe it's not always who will score most points actually but the safest option.

As an example this week I think it will be close between Aguero and Sanchez. I'll 100% go Aguero as he's the safe option as those chasing me will go for him.

If I was chasing or wanted to increase rank I'd probably go Sanchez as it's likely he will be captained by less.

That's where me and you differ then coz my philosophy is go hard or go home 🙂
Has to be said though this year been easy for me to be maverick due to big mini league lead, we're it close I'd possibly reign it in a bit although probably not 😉
