Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Liverpool

A dire Gameweek 29 limps to its conclusion this evening as Swansea and Liverpool go head-to-head at the Liberty. Brendan Rodgers returns to his former club having guided the Reds to a 12-match unbeaten run since moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation and the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge have the chance to get amongst the points against a defence with a single shut-out in six in front of their own fans.

At the back, the visitors have been a consistent source of clean sheets in recent matches. The Merseysiders have kept out their opponents in six of the last eight Gameweeks and have Martin Skrtel available after the Slovakian recovered from a head knock that forced him off on a stretcher against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup stalemate last time out. Mamadou Sakho also returns as one of three centre-backs as Dejan Lovren drops to the bench. Rodgers has made further changes in the wing-back roles, with Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic dropping to the bench: Alberto Moreno is recalled on the left while Raheem Sterling looks to be deployed on the right.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 28. Prior to that defeat, Garry Monk’s men had registered back-to-back victories and earned three points in their previous match at the Liberty, courtesy of a 2-1 win over United.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the goals last time out and has the upcoming fixtures to earn himself a place in our five-man midfields again, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung has notched three times in the last five and, at 5.1 in FPL, is staking a claim as a cheap budget option.

The teamsheet finds Monk forced into one change as Jordi Amat comes in for Federico Fernández who misses out for family reasons. Up front, Bafetimbi Gomis is available to lead the line after recovering from his collapse at White Hart Lane in the previous Gameweek.

Any thoughts on whether to lose one of Bellerin / Zouma? Do we expect them to return to the fold?

[Bellerin | Zouma | Wolly | Naughton | Dawson ], and 0.7 & 2FT in the bank. Eyeing up Alderweireld.

Zouma might lose his spot now that Matic is back. He might also go back into the CB role and push Cahill to the bench.

Im gonna ditch Zouma soon to free up a 3rd chelsea spot. WIll consider the same for Bellerin but dont think he's as much at risk

Aldy will be a good buy. Saints defence has been great and Yoshida was scoring plenty.

Zouma if you had to, Bellerin still has time whilst Zouma's play time is still unknown and IMO still less likely to play than Bell

    Current team is

    Pants, Krul
    Ivan, Clyne, McAuley, PVA, Haidara
    Hazard, Ozil, Silva, Eriksen, Moses
    Kun, Kane, Austin
    1 FT, 1.0 itb

I'd been saving my WC until now, but wondering whether to deploy it prematurely. If I don't, I'll take a hit to bring in Costa and Benteke. If I did I'd buy players like Rooney, Ramsey, Mane and Alderwireld. WC or not?

Not for me ... just work the FTs for the next few GWs and then use it to tidy up an amazing DGW.

Costa and Benteke in for Kun and Austin? Maybe just bring in one of them for free?

I don't think that team screams for a WC - everyone had a bad week.

The only problem is I'm 0.1 short of Austin to tekkers. Perhaps I'm too scared by this past week, probably just an aberration.

So frustrating when that happens! Any other week your team could've had a blinder. I agree with the others on this thread - keep the faith. I think saving is a better idea than a hit; but obviously go with your gut.

Yes indeed. I tend to be a big risk taker and make frequent hits. I'll consider saving this week. Thanks for the response!

Two players who make me shudder when mentioned, Benteke and Lukaku. Have always let me down.

Yoy have a good tem there, i would be tempted to save this week! use the wc in the double in 34

I know he has plum fixture this week but to raise funds maybe look at downgrading Moses? With the other 4 mids you have he will never get a start in your team

It seems the majority of my struggles post Jan WC have been largely down to bad captaincy picks, Clichy, and a thin and miscalculated backline lacking appropriate Saints/West Brom defense. It also seems I may have one/two too many punts, and perhaps it's time to consider cutting my losses with Pool attack and go more template considering they'll likely have to go prior to Gw33 and currently have 6 blankers on my team.

tl:dr So, I have my WC intact and am trying to build up my ideal XI for Gw33, this is what my team looks like at the moment.

      Panti - Krul
      Cliche - Toby - Zumba - Belerina - PVAdhesive
      Sanchez - Hazmat - Coutinho - Mane - Bentaleb
      Aguero - Studge - Kane

Any better ideas? Open to hits as well to fix my team as I'm open to ideas and am desperate to better my rank somehow (2 FT's, 1.3m ITB, WC, 75k rank):
      a) Clichy + Zumba --> Ivan and 3.9m defender (exact funds)
      b) Zumba + Sanchez --> Ivan + Silva
      c) Sanchez + Coutinho + Clichy --> Silva + Erik + Ivan (-4)
      d) PvA/Clichy ---> Schlupp
      e) Anything else?

It'll give you a more template look, but also helps prepare for GW 33 & 34 and gives you 3 plum fixtures for this GW too. Eriksen should do "things" this week against Leicester and Silva could well put up double figures against West Brom if Pellegrini sorts out his formation.

Good points, yes straying too much from the template has cause me some problems a bit, and aye both of them has great fixtures. Both I will want in my team sooner or later come Gw33 as well. Great food for though TE, thanks a lot for the insight 😀

I like A even though it gives you 3.9 defender.

Clichy and Zouma both have their negatives

        You would end up with

Ivan Toby Bellerin most weeks with PVA there if needed. Thats fine with me

I was fiddling around with those moves considering Gru's form, and aye Alexis still played well. That's also a very risk free move considering Studge isn't highly owned at all and is currently taking up a lot of funds. Will think on this Rub, thanks gringo 😀

No. defensive double up are best avoided (worse than mid/for attacking double up). One Matic penalty and you lose 8 points.

Also Costa is great for 3-4-3 for GW33. And DGW34 captaincy.

Considered Terry > Ivan but too sideways for extra £1 m.

Dont think he is explosive enough to consider as captain. Rarely gets bonus pts too.
You have Terry because you expect them to keep clean sheets, you'll have Ivan-Terry because you expect them to keep clean sheets. Dont think double-up/triple-up is bad idea, one good GW followed by one bad GW. Instead of betting on 3 different sides to keep clean sheets, I would be on 2 sides. Just my thoughts. High risk/High rewards etc etc...

Which is what you end up with - mid priced mids to afford that defence.

Basically cheapo D can outscore expensive ones by having CS = 6 points. Cheapo mids are not usually the focal point of the attack to get as many chances to score and assist (Kane being the exception).

With that defense, you can still afford good attack and my TV is low, so someone can get better players too:
              Hazard, Ozil, Coutinho
              Kun, Kane

Try this. total up Terry Ivy Cly Berty Skrty totals for last 10 games.

Compare that total with Hazard Ozil Coutinho and say cheap Mane and Henderson last 10 games.

I bet mids score much higher.

Thats another way of looking at it 🙂 But problem with this is we knew Chelsea, Southampton's defense is good but we didnt knew Mane and Henderson are going to get pts at this rate.

If we take last 10 games. SOU had 5/10 CHE 4/10 Clean sheets.

So less than 2 CS points on average per game for these exceptional defenders. Then you hope for remote attacking returns to even make 4 points return per defender per game. Add in higher yellow card chance as they have to tackle more...

Amat slid tackle to clear the ball and hit off Henderson's leg/knee, over Fabianski's head. Strange part is that Sturridge was awarded with an assist, go figure.
