Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 30

Nemanja Matic became the seventh player to tiptoe onto the Suspension Tightrope this weekend, joining Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran ClarkPhil BardsleySebastian Larsson, Victor Wanyama and Neil Taylor on nine yellow cards – just one misstep away from a two-match suspension.

With Chelsea’s midfield linchpins unable to mistime a single challenge in their next two league ties (STO, qpr), the Blues’ ability to contest in the centre of the park – particularly against a physical Potters outfit – could be diminished. In the worst case scenario, a yellow for either player in the next two Gameweeks – before the limit is extended to 15 bookings – would rule them out of crucial encounters against Manchester United and Arsenal in Gameweek 33 and 34 respectively.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Steven Gerrard received a red card for stamping on Red Devils midfielder Ander Herrera just 38 seconds after entering the fray. The Liverpool skipper misses league matches against Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as the Reds’ FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers.

The FA have taken retrospective action and charged Martin Skrtel with violent conduct for his apparent stamp on United goalkeeper David De Gea in the 95th minute of Sunday’s encounter. The Slovakian centre-back has until 6pm this evening to appeal and, if found guilty, will join Gerrard on the sidelines for Liverpool’s match-ups with Arsenal, Newcastle and Blackburn.

Craig Dawson will serve out a one-match suspension after the FA cleared Gareth McAuley of his wrongful dismissal at the Etihad and transferred the ban over to his fellow defender, who had denied Wilfried Bony a goalscoring opportunity in the penalty area.

Mile Jedinak sits out the last of his four-match ban in the next round of fixtures, as Crystal Palace entertain Manchester City at Selhurt Park, and will return to contention for a trip to Sunderland. Meanwhile, Tom Huddlestone is unavailable for Hull City’s clash with Swansea City but could be reinstated to face Southampton in Gameweek 32.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini faces two more matches (SUN, LIV) on the sidelines before he can take to the field again. Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans remain long-term absentees after their spitting spat, whilst Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry, Lee Cattermole and Claudio Yacob are available for selection in Gameweek, 31 having completed their respective bans.

Dawson being banned when O'Shea wasn't for the same thing is an absolute joke.

Only difference is that ref admitted his mistake in this instance, how should that change the verdicts? The FA/Premier League need to sort themselves out fast, PL decision-making is becoming a farce.

Brown's red card was overturned. It had nothing to do with oshea. sunderland appealed for his Red and that was overturned. Everyone assumed the ref made a mistake because oshea made a similar challenge right before brown did

The ref did make a mistake, he made the call for O'Shea's challenge (a foul), not Brown's. It was pretty clear on the replay.

The ref just then refused to admit what he'd done and thought he could get away with just making a contentious decision rather than mistaking two players.

The fa can't assume stuff. If the ref says the booking was for browns challenge they have to belive it. No one can know for sure what was going through the refs mind

No, but they should employ refs who have integrity and come clean. And there should be a culture of accepting errors and doing our best to help prevent them (technology please) rather than hiding them away and pretending they didn't happen.

I'm sure behind closed doors, the ref admitted what he did and they didn't want the controversy and kept it hidden.

You can see on the replay, he clearly gives it for the O'Shea challenge.

The only difference is that the ref admitted his error in one case and the other one refused to do so in the other.

If you think that should determine whether a player is banned or not, then fair enough but I think most would disagree.

Only hipsters hate one day cricket. They prefer the dramatic tests that happen once a year.

50 over cricket involves the perfect balance of technique and big hitting. I don't think a top bowler like boult would be of much use in t20 stuff, which I truly hate

a ridiculous amount of people that just "prefer" test cricket because it involves "a lot of skill" yet wouldn't bother watching 20 consecutive overs. Face it, apart from an odd test every few months (and that too in 2 or 3 countries only) you will not watch a truly entertaining test game

Also, I'm referring to those who hate 50 over cricket, never said test cricket is rubbish

When Test cricket is bad is can obviously be dull, but the highs of ODI cricket will never match the highs of Test cricket. You will never have an ODI match or tournament as exciting and rewarding as a truly great Test series. The 2005 Ashes could never be replicated in one day format.

I don't believe everything should be instantly gratifying and "bang bang bang" 100 mph. It's why I prefer The Wire to all action cop shows, why I prefer say the films of Bergman to Die Hard, why I like music that requires time and attention.

Test cricket has a different excitement; it's a battle of wits and psychological strength. One lapse of concentration in a day and your wicket is gone.

As I said above, Test cricket CAN be very dull, but at its best it far surpasses ODI.

It has a very high ceiling for potential (a bit like Theo Walcott or Kolarov in FPL terms).

Agree completely. Nothing hipster about preferring test matches.

Personally, I would only watch 1 day cricket for the day out. I've got nothing against 50 or 20 over matches and the deciding overs can be exciting but it's the equivalent of comparing Checkers and Chess.

In a test match you make small concessions, give away the odd run and take the time to set the batsman up. It's a fair fight between batsman and bowler. In limited overs cricket the bowler's primary job is damage limitation, it's a showcase in batting.

One day cricket provides a balance that the other 2 formats do not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive cricket fan, but you have to attract a wider audience to survive. Like it or not, most test grounds are empty and all Championship grounds struggle to get a few thousand in.

One-day cricket provides the best balance between entertainment for those who aren't die-hards and top quality cricket.

Cricket is struggling to attract enough young players as it is in the UK, if we had a system like Aussie grade cricket where you play innings cricket over 2 weekends, it would die out.

Unless you have truly perfect pitch you will end up having a truly pathetic teat math cm no balance when most teams are scoring 500-600 for 6 in most parts of the world.

I can understand those from England preferring the test format but in most countries it's slowly becoming unbearable

        There's another reason...

Most Sunday sides wouldn't last much more than 50 overs anyway. The average player doesn't have the concentration or ability to stand at the crease for 2 days and score 150. The standard of batting in all the teams I've ever played for has been pretty poor. Personally, if I scored 10 runs I'd ecstatic. Anyone batting after 7 is usually just trying to get off strike.

Nobody said odi cricket involves more quality or skill. We're just talking about the sport as a whole. You have to be practical in this era. The standard of test cricket outside England "as a sport", is on the decline. More and more players want to play one day cricket where their is an increasing amount of money involved

Ye, I agree with you there. I was just replying to:

"It's also the format most amateur players play every week and that's for a good reason."

I think the reason most amateur players play limited overs is because it's more practical (requires less time) and ability level (who can actually keep their wicket for 2 days?).

There is definitely a shift towards 'snack size' forms of a lot of sports, which seems to engage more people and make more money.

I consider it a result of societies increasing attention deficit and lack of appreciation for subtlety. Regardless of what I prefer, I understand that's the way things are going. It's a shame but I can see test cricket all but disappearing.

My original point was simply that I prefer test matches for a good reason, not because I want to be alternative or a 'hipster'

I don't hate one day cricket but I prefer test matches.

For me it's like comparing 11-a-side football with 5-a-side. One is fast paced, lots of intense action and guaranteed shots/scoring whilst the other is slower, more tactical and allows for ebbs and flows.

Probably worth remembering at this point in the conversation that football changed the rules around 1990....Football was really suffering before the introduction of the back pass rule with teams spending large portions of the game, at times, passing across the back four and back to the keeper...Test match cricket and county cricket need to learn the lesson.

I'd rather have Aguero this week than Benteke, even if I could get Benteke in magically without spending an FT.

How is it? Do you think Benteke will get more than 2 points at OT? There's always the possibility but I just can't see it.

There is every possibility. Especially if we're mauling them. If you recall he did so earlier in the season in a tight match. But even if that's a gamble he's on penos and has QPR at home, FFS.

Still not convinced myself, sorry. They had practically 1 shot on goal that game and he scored. Fair enough they have QPR where I imagine he'll get something but Aguero has Palace, not to mention it'd cost him 2 FTs to get Benteke in and out.

By the RMTS I am seeing, most have the following spots locked up

    4.5 4.5
    Chelsea Southampton 4.5 4.5 4.5
    Silva Hazard
    Kane

That is ~58.5m spent on those ten players, leaving ~46.5m or more to spend on only five spots. I am not sure how money is an issue for anyone at this point, so the argument that Sanchez or Aguero is not worth the price just doesn't add up.

I have shipped one and am contemplating shipping the second so if you don't think they will score well, that is one thing, but what stellar options are their prices prohibiting people from getting? Isn't the story of this season the failure of the vast majority of the 9.0m+ players, especially with the price algorithms stopping a Kane, Siggy, Downing, or Austin becoming too expensive?

    PVA, Rose, Naughton (ADW,Bellerin)

    D: Keep Sanchez

Don't like - yes silva i would choose over mane but southampton have some decent fixtures - Aguero > Tekkers could backfire badly
