Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 34 – The Strong

We turn our attentions to the upcoming fixture list now and assess those sides with some favourable schedules over the next four-to-five Gameweeks. The upcoming double plays a part in our thinking, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester offering reason to retain their chief assets for the run-in.

CHELSEA

frisking
Jose Mourinho’s tactical masterclass against United ensured that the Blues are now just two wins away from lifting the title – a feat they could potentially complete this Gameweek courtesy of their double-header. A crucial showdown with second-placed Arsenal is first up, followed by a trip to relegation battlers Leicester, and most managers are likely to be holding at least two of the Blues’ assets prior to Saturday’s deadline. Beyond that, the Londoners are offered three favourable fixtures in the run-in (CPL, wba, SUN) to deliver the points again.

With Mourinho clearly happy to shut up shop and grind out results, doubling up on Chelsea’s rearguard looks a worthwhile option. Branislav Ivanovic is assured for most courtesy of his threat going forward, whilst John Terry also looks likely to deliver the points and may partner the Serb in a number of side’s backlines. Thibaut Courtois is also worth considering here as a result of his more economical 5.9 price tag.

In the middle of the park, Eden Hazard’s storming form has shown no sign of abating, with the Belgian’s winner against United taking his recent tally to three goals and two assists in his previous four appearances. He, too, should be nailed on for most, though Cesc Fabregas is also in the frame for inclusion having registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The 9.3-rated Spaniard’s prospects could also be aided by his past experience in the false nine role with his national side and Barcelona, as Mourinho may head into the Gunners clash without a recognised striker and be forced into a tactical reshuffle. Should one of Didier Drogba or Loic Remy prove their fitness in time, however, they will also throw their hats into the ring, with both appealing as differential forward options for the double, providing Diego Costa remains on the sidelines.

LIVERPOOL

frisking
Dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ outfit now resume league duties as they continue their push for Champions League football next season. Fantasy managers are sure to be scrambling for their headline assets prior to Saturday’s deadline with a double Gameweek now on the cards that offers two promising away dates at West Brom and Hull, though the schedule beyond that suggests that those who choose to invest should consider retaining their picks for the remainder of the campaign, with home clashes against QPR and Crystal Palace coming up in the final four Gameweeks.

With the best defensive record of any Premier League side in 2015, having earned eight clean sheets this calendar year, it’s more than a little surprising that the most popular option in the Reds’ rearguard currently sits on an ownership of just 9.5%. We can expect to see a hike in interest around the likes of Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet going into this weekend, however; Skrtel has collected 22 bonus points, more than any defender this season, whilst his aerial threat from set pieces boosts a clear attraction. The 5.3-rated Alberto Moreno is the alternative here, with the Spaniard’s 18 attempts on goal this term bettering any of his backline team-mates.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho each offer their own merits. Henderson’s recent surge in output has seen him deliver returns in five of the last six Gameweeks and offer excellent value at 6.7, whilst Sterling has a goal and assist in the last two league outings and was moved up front against Villa in a 3-4-2-1 for the weekend cup defeat. Sterling could retain that role if Daniel Sturridge is ruled out again, though Rodgers fielded Philippe Coutinho in a false nine role against Newcastle last time out and could utilised the Brazilian – who has scored in two of his last three in all competitions – centrally again if he moves back to 4-3-3.

LEICESTER

frisking
An unlikely source of Fantasy attention for the majority of the campaign, the Foxes recent performances, coupled with their impending double, has seen a swing in interest towards their assets over the past few weeks. The Midlanders head to a goal-shy Burnley side on Saturday for what should be a relegation dogfight, followed by a home meeting with Chelsea next Wednesday evening. With three attractive home fixtures (NEW, SOU, QPR) and trip to Sunderland left to play, there’s enough reason to believe that Nigel Pearson’s men can escape the drop, and plenty of reason to consider retaining our double Gameweek picks for the remainder of the campaign.

Ten goals in the last four outings is indicative of the offensive approach Pearson has recently instilled. Leading the way for Fantasy interest has been 4.6-priced striker Jamie Vardy, whose two goals and pair of assists have been integral to his side’s recent surge. With the equally in-form David Nugent a major doubt for the trip to Turf Moor due to a calf complaint, Vardy is likely to garner even more suitors. Esteban Cambiasso, who has earned returns in each of his last three appearances, is basically unrivalled for investment by any of his midfield team-mates and  is also on a number of managers’ radars, though Marc Albrighton, at 4.2, has started the last two on the right and has decent underlying stats.

The Foxes complimented their upturn in attacking output with a clean sheet against Swansea at the weekend, and with Saturday’s opponents Burnley having managed just a single goal in their last seven outings, further returns are due. Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position prospects make him the most likely route for managers to take, though Kasper Schmeichel in net has the potential for save points, whilst both Robert Huth and Wes Morgan have offered strong goal threat of late.

WEST HAM

frisking
A lack of motivation has seen the Hammers’ season stall over the course of the past two months, though their remaining fixture list should afford Sam Allardyce optimism. Away days at QPR, Aston Villa and Newcastle, married with the visit of Burnley, look very encouraging for Fantasy returns.

Whether that potential will translate into invest is another matter entirely, however. The Hammers have scored more than a single goal just once in their last 11 outings and faith in their attacking assets is understandably low. Their recent injury difficulties up top certainly haven’t helped matters, with Enner Valencia and Carlton Cole now their only two fit strikers. Stewart Downing, meanwhile, will be keen to reward those 21% of managers that have remained faithful to him with some long-awaited returns. The most likely source of investment is left back Aaron Cresswell, whose set-piece duties produced a goal against Stoke in Gameweek 32,and with the two weakest attacks of the past six Gameweeks on the agenda in the final run-in (BUR, new) defensive points can also be expected, making Adrian an option between the sticks.

Also Consider…

Man City
Manuel Pellegrini’s men steadied the ship with a solid 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday after recent losses to Burnley, Palace and United had thrown their top four credentials into jeopardy. The Citizens are presented with a strong schedule to round the season off, with three home fixtures (AVL, QPR, SOU) in their final five as well as a trip to Swansea to boost their Fantasy potential.

David Silva has returned to training and has been given the all-clear after being stretchered off with a possible cheekbone injury at the weekend and, although City will continue to monitor him, he could be back in contention against Villa. Sergio Aguero remains unchallenged for our affections in attack, with the 12.5-valued forward notching three strikes in the last two Gameweek – a lack of premium alternatives up front this week also works in his favour. At the back, meanwhile, City now have four successive home clean sheets and with Vincent Kompany currently sidelined, Martin Demichelis looks the most reliable starter for those keen to invest. Aleksandar Kolarov could also come into contention if Gael Clichy remains out through injury, though.

Arsenal
With Gameweek 33’s blank now gone, Fantasy managers’ love-affair with the Gunners’ main men can resume. The double Gameweek 37 is sure to be a factor when planning our transfers over the coming weeks, though acquiring our chosen assets sooner rather than later looks a wise strategy, with promising clashes against Hull and Swansea on the horizon beyond this weekend’s showdown with Chelsea. The Gunners’ rearguard will be keen to pick up where they left off with shutouts in three of their previous six outings, and David Ospina and Laurent Koscielny are likely to find their way into a host of sides in the coming weeks. Going forward, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez – whose brace booked the north Londoners a place in the FA Cup final last weekend – are primed to reap the rewards of the kind schedule, whilst Aaron Ramsey’s pair of goals and assists in his last four league appearances suggest that the Welshman is also worth considering. With Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla also in the mix, finding the right balance to fit at least two of those three in before Gameweek 37 will be a principal concern for many.

Newcastle
Having lost six on the trot, it’s understandable that there’s little interest in the Magpies’ assets right now. That run of form has ensured that John Carver’s outfit are not yet assured of safety, though trips to Leicester and QPR could go a long way to deciding the relegation race, as will a trio of promising home fixtures (SWA, WBA, WHM). Daryl Janmaat bagged his eighth assist of the season in last Sunday’s loss to Tottenham and the marauding right-back still looks a tempting prospect despite his side’s miserable form. Further forward, 4.7-valued Jack Colback scored his fourth of the season against Spurs, and could appeal as a budget pick for those needing to free up cash for the big-hitting double Gameweek stars.

Southampton
Despite tasting defeat twice in the last three Gameweeks, the Saints are still in the race for Champions League football. A decent schedule sees Ronald Koeman’s men face a trio of strugglers in their next four (sun, lei, AVL), that could bring in points at both ends of the pitch. Owners of Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are likely to hold on even in face of the impending doubles for other sides, whilst Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle will remain on our radars as differential prospects.

Alright DZ, thought I'd get a cheeky RMWCT in here, any input appreciated. Thanks lads.

    Draft #1: The Dullard.

    Kavis - Pants
    JT - Skrtel - Smalling/Jones - Morgan - PvA
    Hazmat - Fabregas - Henderson - Sterling - Cambiasso
    Aguero - Vardinho - Giroud

    (5.0m ITB) Thoughts?
    Gw35 - Save
    Gw36 - Sterling + Vardinho --> Sanchez + Cisse
    Gw37 - Fabregas --> Ramsey

Looks good. Maybe Schmeichel in goal instead of Cambiasso for that last Leicester spot. Don't mind going without Giroud in the draft either and picking a better forward puntyish option. Can't think it wise to plan for Cisse in either, mate. They are such crap and all on the beach I think that may be a punt too far.

Yeah I was looking at the fixtures, and it's either Tekkers off the bat for me or Cisse. Don't really fancy anyone else tbh, as Vardy is by no means a kepeer IMO. If I take out Cambiasso, I could replace him with Rambo, and replace Tekkers for Giroud, Schmeichel in for Davis?

        You don't rate Leicester attack?

I do think they will get their fair share but I still don't think Cambiasso is a good bet for attacking points. He's been lucky for FPL points so far and he's playing too withdrawn and reliant on set pieces for me, Zasa. Vardy, though, I think should stay for sure.

Could do this then, only problem with taking Giroud out is that Ramsey in midfield is a tad awkward. Either way I'd have to stash an Arsenal player.

            Schmiechel - Panti
            JT - Moreno - Morgan - PvA - 4.3m
Hazard- Fabregas - Sterling - Hendo - Ramsey
            Aguero - Tekkers - Vardy

            35 - Save
            36 - Vardy + Sterling ---> Giroud + 4.3m milf
            37 - Gas ---> Dirty Sanchez

            That tidy?

😯 You should still do it! I had to because of doubts over Silva and Toby, I was in a less than ideal position mate. If you can get at least 6 good DGWers w/o no problems, and WC-ing Gw35 is still a good way to go IMO.

Soton have too many away games, their form has been dire defensively away from home as of late and wouldn't be comfortable reliant on on a double up for the rets of the season. Would rather diversify. I could get Stones, something to think about. Thanks Eden.

His goals /minute ratio is insane, Newcastle will need his goal scoring prowess for the kin run in the final three games (WVA, qpr, WHM), probably best not to plan too much with him though.

Dangerous to even suggest it, but is anyone considering ditching HAZARD for DGW37 To raise funds for Sanchez? Sanchez has the quality to do damage to Man U that week. Otherwise would be dropping someone for Rambo, which is perhaps the more reasonable thing to do. Already have Özil. Might just have to do without Sanchez, then . . .

I've thought about it. Not much to lose that late on. I think I will be quite happy enough to go in with Giroud, Ramsey, and Ozil though so I will likely just hang with cool bro Eden until the bitter end.

They'll be my 3, I would say. Ivan and Vardy to McShane & Giroud in two weeks time, then probably Sterling to Rambo. Just hope he (Rambo) will start both games...!

GW 33 vs Swansea, they started 3 ATB (Huth, Morgan, Wasi), but De Laet was subbed in for Wasi at HT, changed to a 442. Schlupp dropping back.

GW 32 vs WBA, same thing, only reverse. De Laet started in the 442, Wasi subbed in at HT, changed to 343.

GW 31 vs Hammers they played 4231 all game, Wasi benched.

Gw 30 vs Spurs, they started ina 541, Wasi benched (De Laet, Morgan, Huth, Upson, Schlupp), Wasi was subbed in at HT again, this time for Upson, and they played 541.

Thanks man. I currently have Clyne and Alder. Both I will plan to lose value on. My plan was to replace Clyne with an Arsenal defender in a few weeks. Or would you think it's better if I just don't have him in my squad all together.

Kinda worried about the no Kane effect. Could really either propel me up into the standings or make me crash and burn.

Any thoughts on Coutinho vs Hendo?? Thanks man!

          • 10 Years

You may as well just get an Arsenal defender now and play Schlupp over him this week 🙂

No Kane is a risky move, but it seems quite a few people are benching or selling him this week so if you crash and burn you won't be the only one 😉

I personally have Coutinho so I'm a bit biased, but I'd say him. He's a lot more exciting to watch and I just feel like Hendo's points have got to dry up sometime.

            • 11 Years

Which Arsenal defender though? I was all set on Bellerin until Debuchy came back. Yeah that sounds tempting tbh.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people getting rid of Kane which works in my favour I guess. But the treat of him is so real.

Ahh do you think he is worth the extra 1.1m? Coutinho really lights up the game but his final touch and finishing is smth to work on. If Lucas is back then getting Henderson would be interesting as he would be on set-pieces.

              • 10 Years
              9 years, 2 months ago

Not sure tbh. Monreal seems to have that LB spot secure but I guess the threat of Gibbs is always there... Maybe Kosc? Too much uncertainty over their RB position to invest from a FPL perspective I feel.

I think he is worth the extra 1.1m yeah. There isn't too much between them but Coutinho is a great DGW differential who could really propel you up the rankings. I think he's more explosive than Hendo too.

                • 11 Years
                9 years, 2 months ago

I agree with you that Coutinho is more explosive than Henderson no doubt about that, and he is a sure starter for both the games. Looks like you just might have swung me to getting Coutinho ahead of Hendo.

Was looking at Kosc but wanted to monitor his minutes. If only Debuchy wasn't back then it would make life a lot easier.

Thanks man for all your help!

if you do have sclupp in your squad i would play him as the extra def and bench gir for the DGW
again I would play phillips over alexis this week
Maureen normally has a clever/defensive strategy ready for arsenal -it normally works and will nullify these attackers who you rightfully have for the rest of the run in

I don't see Lei keeping a CS in both games but so do Sou I guess. Based on Alexis form I might be inclined to play him instead. Or should I play Phillips and not Giroud?

I already have 2 Arsenal and plan to add one more defender to replace Clyne or Davis during the run in. Not keen on stacking up on Sunderland options though.

personally i'd have cout +hendo-i worry for sterling too much going on in the young man's brain to concentrate on football
      hendo-steady,starts,pens and free kicks
cout-class and false forward potential and goal scoring form

      1. HammersXI

Ah yes that sounds tempting. But with the option of playing OOP if Sturridge is not fit is way too tempting for me. Plus his ownership is way too high.

I guess what you brought forth makes complete sense. But if Gerrard plays that limits Henderson's potential. And I'm not too sure about the Lucas injury update.

So based on that would you choose Henderson or Coutinho?

ok if its a straight fight
6.7+7.8 is quite a difference and might come in handy

Assuming Silva and Remy get the green light this week, which fillers do you prefer here in my WC?

    A) Schmeichel & Remy
    B) Courtois & Kane

    xxx, Myhill
    Terry, Skrtel, Morgan, PVA, McShane
    Hazard, Sterling, Hendo, Silva, Sanchez
    Aguero, xxx, Vardy

Swaying towards B with Kane benched.
If doing A then I'd look to squeeze 0.4m in the bank for Remy -> Tekkers next week

I could always get one in later when removing Ivan, but i think there will be better choices. Clyne seems no longer guaranteed a place anyway.
When u look at it form the managers point of view, why keep playing a player who is leaving? It might be better to give some experience to someone else

True that unless Champions League is still up for grabs then. There prob will be better options later, esp with the city game last day of the season.

I removed Clyne (and Aldierwield) agree with their fixtures not being that great now and you have to wonder about their motivation going forward, they've had a good season but it's time to cut lose, last week's block was the final straw.

I've replaced them with double Liverpool at the back, risky I know but with Skrtel in the team they've kept a lot of recent away clean sheets and WBA and Hull are not exactly plundering the goals.

Solid post, I agree Saint's defensive form away really leaves much to be desired as of late.
Have gotten rid of Toby on WC already. Larsson looks a great shout for the DGW, certainly the most consistent attacker from the Sunderland outfit thus far.

It's a little complicated, but my WC is currently looking like:

        Mignolet, Myhill
        Terry, xxx, Morgan, PVA, McShane
        Hazard, Silva, Sterling, Sanchez, xxx
        Aguero, Remy, Vardy

Hmmm, not sure about McShane. Problem with double pool mid is who to bench this week?

I wanted to be a little different but am now edging back towards keeping Kane instead of getting Vardy. Kane on the bench this week then.

Sanchez would be the obs choice for the bench. Skrtel Cambiasso might be better for structure going forward alright. You could use another decent defender going forward

Benching Sanchez at home in an often high scoring derby feels risky.

You favour 2 x LIV defenders or attackers for the DGW? With QPR next week also, I'm thinking 2 attackers may be the way to go.

Cant see any Chelsea game being too high scoring. Theyre gonna close out shop.

Id prefer two attackers. Not many other mids out there who Id fancy too much.

Morning boys, took my hits yesterday, -8 in the end, figured Alderweireld and Dawson won't play at the weekend so I would have had 10 players so replaced a 0 score with a potential 4 (due to Skrtel) and then took a luxury hit to add Henderson for Puncheon, with it being a double week the hit feels like a -2 instead of 4 due to playing twice.

I guess when you look at it like that, it doesn't seem a bad idea.

I still may go risky and go Sterling(c)... still undecided.

Both could do well. Especially if Sterling plays up front and my opponent is stuck with an injured Sturridge.

Ok, i was trying to say - choose who you think will score the most. I don't think you have to captain hazard. When chelsea played psg away, I think they had 2 shots and scored once. The whole tactic was set pieces and park the bus

With such an impressive rank, could you elaborate on your decision to include Remy? He's been in and out of my WC team. If LEI were first up I'd be more confident, but Mou will surely park the bus at Arsenal and go for a smash and grab. Real potential against LEI next up but could Costa be back by then?
