Moving Target

Moving Target – Kieran Trippier

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

    Kurzawa apparently heading to Roma

Could this put a ? over Fabinho leaving? Monaco to lose both full backs in one summer?

Monaco could just lose all of their players this summer, and they'd hardly care. The team financially is in really bad shape.
Falcao, Moutinho and Abdennour are on their way out as well.

Bournemouth have had a bid accepted for Ipswich left-back Tyrone Mings, according to Sky sources.

Mings is in Bournemouth discussing personal terms, and a move could be completed in the next 24 hours. We also understand this would be a Bournemouth club record fee.

He is a beast of a player. Lots of power and pace but a bit naive with his defending at times (although he is only young so this should improve).

Will be sad to see him go but we can't turn down that sort of money. We are also getting young winger Ryan Fraser on loan as part of the deal. Pitman also close to signing but that looks like a separate deal.

If he is £4.5M then I'll be interested. Should certainly get some attacking returns from open play in that side. He used to stay back most of the time at corners (as we already had Berra, Chambers and Smith all going up for them) but the times he did go up he looked very dangerous.

Liverpool are close to reaching a £12.5million agreement to sign Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that the Reds had seen a £10m flatly rejected by Saints, who want at least £15m for the highly-sought-after right-back.

It is believed the Merseyside club are in discussions over a structured deal that would take the fee up towards the £15m-mark based on certain conditions that would eventually be met by the player.

My mum is originally Irish but my dad is a far right (or left, I know nothing about politics) racist but with a great name. My dad is David Lovibond. He used to write for the Guardian and the Spectator and edits/creates speeches and various documents for a city law firm. He was the chap who instrumented much of the success with UKIP and BNP. Lovely chap.
Our family had its 800th anniversary last year. Supposedly the oldest traceable family outside of royalty.

He's the kind of man that lays traps in every answer. He is always desperate for me to be ill or down trodden. He once told me he was desperate for a grandchild and asked if I was planning. I said yes and he said wel there's no way I could afford it and to put it off.
My mum on the other hand fostered children with us as a broken family, including children with Down Syndrome. She also worked as a psychologist in Wormwood Scrubs for 10 years and completed a degree at 50 years old whilst raiding 3 children plus a foster child in a council house. She was also born with Polio and had most of her family and friends die off very young. Hero is not even the word. Welling up as I write this.

Please insult all you like, he is not in my heart, although it is still big enough to still see him. He swore me and my sisters to secrecy last year over his multiple relationships, suggesting that my siblings were unaware of the unfaithfulness. It was only at a drunken family dinner (he not involved) that we discovered that each one knew. He had us meet each woman and asked us to decide which one to choose. One well of but not so attractive, the other vice versa.

For all the middle-table teams like Southampton, Swansea, Everton, Stoke and Palace, people generally want a share of their defence, and CS potential being their only priority, I guess we just try to pick the nailed-on cheapest defender from each team.

If I had to guess, it would be Soares from Southampton at £5.0m, Naughton from Swansea at £4.5m, Stones from Everton at £5.5m, Pieters/Wollscheid from Stoke at £5.0m and Kelly from Palace at £4.5m (is Souare not really bad?)

.... So is there anybody else from these teams who you would choose purely based on their merit, assuming the players I chose are the cheapest ways in indeed?
All the rest of Everton (Baines, Coleman, Jagielka) and Bertrand have really a lot of attacking potential, but could be even worth £1-1.5m more than the base price of that team's defence.

would touch Stoke, not a Pulis team anymore

      nor Everton with those fixtures

nor Saints with Europa and 3 away games in the first 5

Swansea is possible depending on prices

West Ham is possible with those first 4 home games

Brom can keep CS regardless of fixtures

      Sunderland, Leicester appeal

West Brom officials are flying to Turkey as they bid to win the race for Demba Ba.

They are also willing to pay him upwards of £60,000-a-week to make him best-paid player ever.

Great news for The Baggies if it happens. Would be a great FPL prospect too I reckon.

Transfers that won't happen this summer.

    Ramos to United
    Vidal to Arsenal/United
    Otamendi to United
    Nainggolan to BPL
    Abdennour to Newcastle
    De Bruyne to City

I would say Otamendi and Abdennour are only slight possibilities, the latter just because Monaco is trying to sell all their players since last season.

The problem with Abdennour is not so much that he wouldn't be sold, but the club: Newcastle? Last I checked, it was AC Milan, Juventus and even Barcelona interested in him. He gets CL football at Monaco, and there's interest from bigger clubs, so I don't quite understand why he would join Newcastle. No offence.

True, in that sense Abdennour to _Newcastle_ makes less sense. Abdennour is oyunger too, on the other hand Payet is starting for France atm, which he might not do long if he moved to West Ham. And Abdennour's transfer out of Monaco is a question of time, whereas Payet actually wants to prolong his contract at Marseille.

One thing Martinez is very good at is attracting players. Lukaku, even if it hasn't worked out brilliantly so far, and Deulofeu are big coups that I'm not sure Moyes would have managed.

But Remy is a very risky proposition, not only he failed that medical at Pool, but was randomly injured most of the times even with such limited game time at Chelsea.

I do a nice home made tomato chutney but that's more to go with the sheekh kebabs I usually do.

Cous cous is simple but effective if it's well flavoured - mint, lemon, chilli... that kind of thing.

Otherwise I'm relatively plain in my salad tastes - it's a diversion from the main event.

I often find starters the best bit of a meal. Would often cheerfully choose 4/5 starters and forego a main if I wasn't so acutely concerned about what strangers might think of me.

Yeah, you always can find a handful of players who do well, usually this kind, who won the promotion with the team they played with in PL too. And then there's a ton of others who don't. Nothing in Gestede's history suggests he has the skills to do it in top level.

So someone like Ings or Austin.... they just should never get signed bu a Prem team? Only ever get to play in the Prem by coming up with a promoted team?

The agent of Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin insists Tottenham have not bid for his client and will not sell Hugo Lloris for any price.
Lloris has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, who are expected to lose David de Gea, leading to speculation that Spurs could target Perin, 22, as a replacement for the France No.1

Perin's agent Mateo Roggi, however, insists the north Londoners will not consider allowing Lloris to leave White Hart Lane this summer and have made no approach for his client.

"I have a brilliant relationship with Tottenham, especially Franco Baldini," Roggi told TMW. "But I can tell you that I have not received any bids for Mattia.

"Tottenham are aiming for the Champions League next year, so they have decided not to sell the two stars in the squad, Harry Kane and Lloris, regardless of price."

Spurs, meanwhile, are close to agreeing a fee with Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld, according to the Daily Telegraph, with the defender hoping to complete a transfer after returning from his honeymoon in Bali.
