The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Stoke City

Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

RMT and any suggestions very appreciated!

    Myhill (Hennessey)
    Azpi PvA Huth (Angella Targett)
    Hazard Walcott Mata Milner (Wanyama)
    Aguero Benteke Deeney

Not sure if I am going a little too light in defence to have a strong midfield?

I am aware of the risk of keeping Targett but the only way around this I can see is to either downgrade Walcott to Ozil or Milner to Cabaye.

Keepers and Def - not a fan, but not far off being good.
Mids and Forwards, good except you'll need to watch for Aguero. If he's not starting GW1 downgrade him to Rooney/Costa and upgrade a mid/defender.

      Could do Milner to Ritchie.

Thanks, keeps with roughly what I was thinking. Who would you change defensively on a similar budget? I always struggle picking reliable defenders!

And yes, Aguero is a wait and see but figured it was easier to have him in and change rather than try and shoe-horn him in later.

          Francis/Bassong rotate nicely at £9.0. BOU/NOR
          Cedric/Morgan at £9.5. SOU/LEI

There aren't really any rotations at £8.5 unless Ryan Bennett/Turner start for Norwich.

Thanks, I'll think I'll have another look at better rotation options for defence then and see what works, thanks for the suggestions.

I guess if I was changing Milner to Ritchie then I could upgrade PvA to Kosc and change the 4.5's to ones that rotate better...

WBA have pretty rotten fixtures, but the appeal of Hennessey would be a 4.0 starting keeper. I'd just swap Myhill for a 4.0 and save the cash, or else you might as well pick a 4.5 keeper with better fixtures.

I think the defence is a little light, with the 4.0s on the bench. I think you need an extra 0.5 just to upgrade so you can rotate Huth a bit.

    Good Evening Punters,

What do you think of this team until new transfers ruin it all ?

    Ruddy - Rudd

    Azpi - Kos - Francis - Holebas - Baker

    Haz - Milner - Sterling - Ritchie - Wallie

    Benteke - Rooney - Ighalo

*Kun in for Benteke or Rooney depending on forms by downgrading a midfield
**Chadli in for Milner if Benteke does end up at liverpool

    Thoughts ??

Nice, not sure on your keepers though.

I think the base is alright, but think you could do better.

Why the Norwich 8.5 pair when Newcastle is also possible? I know Ruddy is a good shotstopper, but Newcastle surely will improve towards a top half finish now that terrible Carver has gone. I would assume Norwich is one of a few favorites to go down, I would not want to own that goalkeeper.

You know Baker is not playing. If a playing 4.0 comes along you'll take him, but what if he doesn't? Do you keep him? Or prefer a playing 4.5 def?

Midfield is nice, but I don't really know Ritchie. I know the stories and stats, he is one of the better 6.0's around. Walters is another alternative, but is not really appealing haha. Sterling I don't really like, I find him quite expensive to be honest. But I can see the appeal, although Yaya could be golden for the first few weeks with FK, PK. His form at the end of the season was excellent.
And I would upgrade Ighalo, preferably by downgrading Sterling to Mane or an 8.5. That gives you Wilson/Deeney, and by selecting Ritchie you almost implicitly approve of Wilson, so why not 😉

-I see your point on the keepers, but I had Krul last year and didn't work out well for me. Let's see what Newcastle does this year. But he's a possibility, same as Butland.
I went for Norwich who has a good clean sheet record from previous campaigns and didn't change much in defense.

-If a playing 4.0 defender comes up i will surely pick him, otherwise I'm happy just rotating my 2 cheapies with Azpi and Kos.

-I feel Ritchie can be this season's Siggy, and Walters is on the watch list 😉
For Sterling it should be only temporary as i will downgrade him to get Aguero, Toure can definitely be interesting, even more if he plays in the whole. But i don't know if it's worth downgrading to get a 5.5 striker as i am going to play 3-5-2 until i guet Aguero. Besides from what I have seen, Ighalo plays wide in the 4-3-3 and bagged a couple of goals in friendlies, he coul well start the season.

Thanks for the constructive reply, i'll keep your tips in mind, cuz we all know our team will change again and again before deadline aha

          You're welcome!

Considering 3-5-2, much of my concerns about Sterling and Ighale are negated. I share your thoughts about getting a 5.5 striker and am aiming to get Sakho in my side myself. Your other points are legitimate as well, especially the Yaya part. Too bad aguero takes the penalty's, if he was out injured for some time Yaya would be high om my list. Now not so much, there is too much competition.

Let's hope for the best with Norwich, but I fancy them to go down to be honest. Maybe I am too biased by their terrible performances from two years ago, or maybe Hooper will bail them out, haha. Who knows. You are right about their clean sheets, I remember the problem was scoring goals that year.

Looks pretty good - Isn't Ighalo more of an impact sub, would expect Deeney and Vydra to be starting?

It all depends, if the team plays 4-3-3 then Ighalo could start on the wing.
If 4-2-2 Deeney and Vydra are more likely to play indeed.
I'm monitoring friendlies and will do in consequence. But also i am going to play 3-5-2 for a couple of weeks so i will have time to see how teams are shaping up.

    Schmeichel - Butland
    Ivanovic - Cedric - Morgan - Francis - Bassong
    Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Mane - Anya
    Rooney - Sakho - Wilson

Still undecided between Wilson and Deeney (and Bojan if nailed).

Surely Benteke and Azpi now that Chrissy joined liverpool and will have Firmino and Coutinho setting him up as well as Clyne giving him those lovely crosses. While for Lukaku... I don't know what to tell ya mate! He will have to deal with Cleverley and Gareth Barry unfortunately !

Panti overpriced, did well last season but Sunderland I think will let in shed loads. Same with bacuna and villa. Shaw is unproven at united. Ozil is hit and miss. Benteke may not settle at Liverpool. Palace have rubbish fixtures. You won't wanna play sakho in the opening away game.

A fair explanation! If I may counter it will my reasons! Pantili will get bp for saves, bacuna will be an early tranafer but is playing Bournemouth and is playing right wing in pre season matches, shaw was originally darmain but he may not start so it's shaw till then, you may have a point with oZil but he is playing 'in the hole' which is his favoured position while Sanchez is out, benteke comment is hilarious, we could say that about half of the players in the league, bolasie is on the bench after the 1st game I have depth and I was considering targett to start first match with Sakho on bench

They are the 3 I have switched today

I had Dawson, cabaye and darmain but Dawson and darmain will be brought in when fixtures are better and positions are more concrete. As for cabaye, he is sharing set pieces with puncheon so bolasie is a better shout IMO!

I like it! One of the better teams with Haz in it!

Looks quite a bit like my team, or the team I am trying to make.

Especially like that it is quite balanced. Can I ask what you are planning to do with Bacuna? I like him, but people here do not fancy a 5.0 villa defender. His attacking output is excellent though, and if Ade joins he could have a nice target to find with his crosses. His free kicks are also excellent. The rotation with your other defenders is what worries me though, when is he going to play?

I doubt you need Myhyll, even though he is a good pick and I think you could use the budget to upgrade your defence. I would love to know what you do with your team if you wouldn't have Haz, do you have any idea?

Playing eleven is really good, bench not so much so i'm gonna give it 7.5/10. With a few changes you could easily score 8/10 or higher imo.

Cheers mate, I will look into the myhill thing! I defo want 1 west brim defender when fixtures clear up a bit, Dawson is the best shout! I watche him all of last season (baggies fan) and he was a threat a right back, very unlucky not to get more goals and assists! If I didn't have hazard, I'd want Costa to top up my Chelsea quota! Probably instead of sakho and have payet or sterling if I could afford it! Or Costa for benteke and bring in milner or sterling! I'd have to play around with prices!

Haven't worked on the rotation yet but...

    Panti, 4.0
    Koscielny, Azpi, 4.5 rotation, 4.0
    Hazard, Cazorla, Henderson, Ki, 4.5
    Rooney, Aguero, Deeney

3 of the best captain options in there

Like it! Ki and the 4.0 are compromises, but otherwise its very good.

      lots of firepower
maybe wilson over deeney, easier games perhaps?
dont like non-playing 4.0's, even for a GK
prefer the plan of bringing aguero in GW4 tbh

yeah there have been some compromises.
Sunderland fixtures very good and tend to get more clean sheets away from home (never been a fan of rotation)
On the plus side there a lot of penalty takers in that team

if agueros ruled out week 1, then i'll be nowhere near this team

To be honest, I don't know how much better Benteke is than Ings... and Ings works a lot harder, and would seem to suit the system better...

I'm really not convinced on Benteke as a player.

I think ings is better in a direct style of play as he has pace and can run in behind defences. Benteke can make chances all on his own as he has shown at villa.

Not bad mate. Personally I would downgrade Ibe to a 4.5, and consider downgrading Courtois to a 5m goalkeeper, and using the cash to upgrade Shelvey or Agbonlahor. 7/10 at the moment in my book mate.

Could I get a mark out of 10 for this lot?

    Pantilimon (Hennessey)
Koscielny - Azpilicueta - Cedric (Huth - Francis)
Hazard - Walcott - Mané - Milner (Wanyama)
    Aguero - Sakho - Deeney

    Thanks!

Chadli had slightly better PPG last season but Henderson is a guaranteed starter and a set piece taker. Would go for Henderson.

    Any thoughts guys?

    Courtois (Schmeichel)

    Bellerin / Francis / Apzi (Morgan, O'Shea)

    Schneiderlin / Milner / Walcott (C) / Sterling / Fab

    Rooney / JRod (Sahko)

1.5 in the bank so can do some tinkering in a couple of weeks to get Aguero if needed. Or now Benteke is at Liverpool could bring him in for JRod? Would then want to swap Milner though.
I did originally have Haz, but switched to Fab to upgrade GK and free up some funds.

If you're marking it in terms of a simple binary "yes I like that player" and "no I don't like that player" I suppose.

I'd say there's more to it than that though.

    Thoughts on this:

    Rooney - Sakho - Benteke
