Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

I have watch young Gomez very closely during pre-season. I think he will be a lock for GW1 against Stoke. Moreno has had a few niggles during pre-season. I seriously hope the kid is given a chance.

Bertrand posted on social media he was recovering quicker than expected, he was only expected to miss 2-3 games so now it's down to 1-2 i suppose, i just took Targett out becuase of this. The PVA/Bassong/Huth/Prodl gives this for the first 3 gws:

        SUN CPL
        NOR WBA
        SWA STK

pretty nice fix there plus Kosc every week

i think any team which u consider WC at GW 4 is a bad option. Don't pick starting team based on fixtures. Midfield is strong with good differentials. Double united cover with depay and rooney, I think maybe change it up with an arsenal / city midfielder

Why? Last few seasons i have wc'ed gw 4 anyway, might aswell try and optimize first 3 weeks then 😉

If i get an Arsenal mid i'll have double them anyway, also Man U's early fixtures are really nice, rather have Depay over Yaya.

You named ADM & Ozil, but those two cooled of after a few weeks. And FPL is more than 2 weeks. Plus LVG said Depay will have to adapt to BPL - he may start the season but I think LVG will utilize him with caution.

Haz started with a bang because his play is like match made in heaven for BPL. I think of all the new faces, Payet will follow suit.

they still all exploded onto the scene for a good month or so. that's what fpl transfers are for 😉

Been through a few setup’s, but happy with this at the moment.

    Butland Ruddy
    Azpi Kos Huth O'Shea Prödl
    Haz Cazorla Yaya Ki Wanyama
    Agüero Benteke Defoe

    0.0ITB

Team was initially based around Doosra’s XV, but made a few changes to improve attackers and the midfield. However took a hit on the defence to achieve this. Agüero playing GW1 is optimistic, but I’d rather have him in from the start than having the headache getting him in later. I don’t plan to use an early WC.

    Thoughts appreciated.

Personally think he will do well given Swans heavily relied on wingers, but Ayew provide the rotation headache.

    Panti / Henneessey
Bellerin Cedric Morgan / shaw mings

What do you guys think ?

Well balanced team. Defence is missing 1/2 big hitters though. 352 I take it? Would maybe swap Payet for Hendo/Milner, Sterling for Yaya and upgrade a 4.5 DEF to Fonte.

First RMT of the season - going heavy in attack on the grounds that cleanies are highly unpredictable at the start of the season:

    Myhill (Hennesey)
    Azpil, Cedric, Holebas, Francis, Huth
    Wally, Fabregas, Milner, Ritchie, Wanayama
    Aguero, Rooney, Pelle

    Thoughts?

One of the best teams I've seen so far.

With 2 9.0 mids, it'd be easy for you to downgrade to any 8.5 that hit the ground running. Fab vs Sterling though - depends on which one you think will score the most points early on.

dream strikeforce. Only issue is your Defense - don;t think it'll instill much confidence.

I figure I can play Azpil and Cedric (might swap to a Yoshida replacement) most weeks and just rotate the other three. Early season games are tricky to predict anyway.

If Aguero doesn't look like starting week 1 it's a possible switch to Costa with Fab becoming Sterling...

No Hazard is a risk and a little light in defence. The forward line looks tasty, but I am wary of Saints players this year with European football on the cards. Maybe Benteke instead?

Yes Hazard is a risk, but he really weakened the rest of the team. Pelle's early fixtures are so nice and I want to see whether Benteke can play effectively without the Villa long balls

    Bad News for Arsenal Fans:

Olivier Giroud has signed a new deal at Arsenal, according to the Daily Mirror.

For one, Giroud is a key player in the team and in all honesty, deserves a pay raise especially for improving statistically year after year however you're looking at it the wrong way. He's getting a new contract because Arsene is indeed bringing in a new striker. Giving Giroud this contract ensures that he is aware that Wenger knows he is a vital player in the team now and in fact in the future.

Loved the hot topic on Team Balance - thank you!

It's been doing my head in - usually prefer a solid balance with flexible price ranges.

Since am planning an early WC like many others, am wondering if the flexibility needed early on will instead come from an unbalanced team:

    1) sacrificing nailed long-term starters for potential short-term players

    2) mid-range 4th/5th mid & 3rd fwd - instead of fixed 3-5-2/3-4-3.
Note: not so much for the attacking rotation (which rarely works), more for choice if for eg: a premium mid doesnt start.

We typically use a transfer on the bench player anyway when the right value one shows up (ala Boyd) - so not going with a cheap 5th mid gives you flexibility to swap one of two, instead of just one. (similar to having Roo/Costa->Aguero transfer option)

    3) Using the all-out-attack chip early before the WC (and before you end up with a 4.5mid)

Not very happy with the draft yet, but this is what it looks like for now. Any thoughts?

    Ruddy, Butland
    Azpi, Jenks, Francis, OShea/Matthews, Targett
    Wally, Fab, Ozil, Chadli, Ritchie,
    Rooney, Costa, 6M (Defoe?!)
