Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

The Curious Case of Steven Davis:

He has been performing brilliantly in Pre-Season, taking free kicks, and maybe be preferred to start over J.Rod. At 5m he can become the next Aaron Ramsey...Definitely one to keep an eye out for...

I had him for a spell last season until he stopped being a regular starter. Very good player but I think he'll be eased out as JRod recovers fitness.

And downgrade whichever one of Ki / Richie you don't upgrade to a 4.5m - otherwise it's just money on the bench, and you'll need the cash liquid (i.e. in your starting 11) so that you can jump on band wagons easily.

          I prefer Stekelenburg/Ruddy for the perfect 38/38 h/a rotation.

Doosra's pick of Fabianski/Schmeichel is also 38/38 and has equally good prospects.

Fabianski/Ruddy and Stekelenburg/Schmeichel are both 34/38 if you want to mix it up.

          Pantilimon/Butland is 28/38.

I think they are the best 9.5 pairs.

bad advice, rotation sucks. mignolet (or other) every week is better. even panti got more clean sheets away last season and you wanna rotate him?

I gave no advice. He asked "who do you prefer" and I told him.

There have been near enough 3 home clean sheets to every 2 away clean sheets season after season in the PL. Last season 35% home, 29% overall, 24% away. You can always find a team that does better away than home over a short period. But in the long haul those are the numbers.

Adam or Walters for Ritchie perhaps? Both proven pl players with same price.

I've been toying with this for a while and have come to the conclusion that my Aguero plan involves ditching Silva for a 6.5 - 7.5 priced mid and upgrading Rooney. Ugh

No problem. Please throw an eye over mine too, a bit up!

I think the team is quite solid (bar Clasie IMO), but I would much rather do Courtois > Cech than double up. One fluke corner...

I'm also a fan of a heavier defense, but that probably means sacrificing Hazard which I know goes against the grain.

I think Chelsea, once again will be the best defense in the premier, that's why I doubled up chelsea defense with Azpi and Curtois.

    G'day Lads ..

Thinking of taking a different approach .. let me know if this is a good idea.

I have gone a FWD line of Costa/Wilson/Deeney

Loaded up on my Mid - Hazard/Milner/Silva/Payet/Wanyama

    Defence Ivanovic/Cedric/Clyne/S.Taylor(4.0)

    GK Fabianski/Butland.

Let me know what you lads think, Cheers.

I wouldn't call that a loaded midfield with Wanyama in there, if you have 2 weak strikers then it's important to have a decent rotator in midfield. Good strong defence though.

Ugh, as a disgusted Liverpool fan (Sakho is easily our best defender, IMO), there is definite evidence mounting against him being clear first choice. I think they will be battling it out until the very last minute before the season kicks off (which might be a good thing, but I worry about both players' confidence levels if this keeps up)

This is so much the point. Leicester were way ahead in the Championship. They matched that relative to Burnley and QPR in the PL but even so until the last quarter of the season they struggled badly.

Howe is an inexperienced manager wedded to an idealistic style of football that will see his team take some hammerings in the PL until he adapts. But the idealistic ones tend to be slow to get the point. Give me Neil at Norwich any day - pragmatic and with a squad full of PL experience.

"More like 20" is an exaggeration. More like 45 would probably be more accurate. They will score goals and they will concede plenty too.

If you are looking at Stoke don't forget MVG at 5.5.

He's a modern CM, does both jobs.

Mourinho: “He covers a fantastic area of the field defensively and after that he has this instinct where he wants to go into finishing areas, he wants to score goals. He’s very good in the air.”

That's the nail on the head question I think.

Hazard is only value over Fabregas if you plan to use Hazard as a captain option. Costa is only value over the likes of Benteke and Kane if you plan to use him as a captain option too. Therefore having Hazard and Costa makes little sense. One or other.

I would get Milner instead of Chadli and Yoshida is dead. Soton will sign 1-2 CBs

Don't like doubling on man U, and I can't support not having Hazard

    Schmeichel (Fab)

Man Utd can't win the League because they lack a match winner like Suarez/Robben/Sanchez, etc. Agree or Disgree?

Players like Shwein. wont produce magic like what Messi did against Bayern. Chelsea have Hazard, Arsenal Sanchez/Ramsey, City have Silva/Aguero, United.....

Anyone know if LEns will be on any set pieces for Sunderland. I like him as an option or is there better for 6.5?

I actually think that unless you have a magical team value of 108m from the start of the season that it is mathematically impossible to get greater than a 7/10 using Doosra's rating system.

Not sure why people are getting offended when they get a 6.5 or a 7 our of 10.

        I was happy with a 5, honestly.

I think i lost 2 points for still having Frank Lampard and Tim Cahill in my team though.

Liverpool's seven strikers does put me off a bit but Benteke is the stand out option until Sturridge is back....

Thing is, they're chalk & cheese: big lump vs little nippy guy. And Liverpool are set up to service the nippy ones like Suarez rather than the big lumps like Carroll.

We need to see something pre-season, but right now I can envisage a pattern of Tekkers have 60 mins of frustration, and Ings coming off the bench and scoring.

that might happen with Ings coming in late and scoring but imagine Benteke averaging a couple goals a game 🙂

That's like imagining winning $10m on the lottery. Ain't going to happen. If he averages 0.5 goals per game Liverpool fans will be delighted.
